men before being gunned down by parishioners. ines de la cuetara joins us with the latest on the investigation. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea and kenneth. investigators are still trying to figure out the motive behind that horrific attack with the violence unfolding just as parishioners had begun receiving communion. this morning, a texas community reeling from a day of worship turned deadly. parishioners visibly shaking, hugging each other for comfort. two people are dead and three are injured after a gunman opened fire inside the west freeway church of christ. the chaos that ensues all caught on camera with the church live streaming its sunday service. there's the gunman sitting in the back of the room wearing a large coat. watch as he pulls out a gun and aims it at a man nearby opening fire before the man can defend himself. the shots sparking panic. parishioners seen ducking for cover, one man even covering his

wife with his own body. >> we are gonna need help with a patient here. >> reporter: several members of the congregation almost immediately returning fire and striking the gunman. authorities say it was all over within six seconds. >> the citizens who were inside that church undoubtedly saved 242 other parishioners. >> reporter: the gunman ultimately dying at the scene taken out by two of the volunteers on the parish security force. >> it was a sad thing he had to come into the congregation and hurt people and it was a sad thing we had to hurt him. >> reporter: the lieutenant governor of texas praised the swift response and said it would be studied by law enforcement and churches and anyone else wanting to train their own security. kenneth and andrea. >> ines, thank you for that report. we turn now to the other attack on a religious gathering. the stabbing of five people at a rabbi's house in new york during a hanukkah party. >> new york's governor is calling this an act of domestic terrorism, but this morning the suspect's family is sharing what

they believe is behind the violent assault. at a rabbi's home north of new york city, dozens celebrated the final night of hanukkah despite the house being a scene of horror less than 24 hours earlier. >> report of multiple people stabbed. >> reporter: police say grton thomas barged into a hanukkah celebration at the rabbi's home saturday night and started slashing people with a large machete. >> he took out his knife and started hitting people back and forth. he didn't say anything. first went into the dining room and went to the kitchen and hit a few people there then he came back to the dining room. >> reporter: five stabbed during the terrifying rampage. witnesses say the weapon was the size of a broomstick. >> just swinging, sword, knife, i don't know what it was. back and forth hitting people. >> reporter: the community public affairs council posted the surveillance video which they say shows the suspect leaving the scene in a car. the man chasing after him wrote down the license plate which police say was critical to the case. the nypd later arrested thomas in manhattan and say he was covered in blood and smelled

like bleach. >> why did you do it? >> reporter: thomas said nothing while leaving court after pleading not guilty. a man who says he's the suspect's friend said thomas has, quote, mental issues and has changed over the years. overnight the suspect's family released a statement saying he is not a member of a hate group but has a history of mental illness and hospitalizations and has no history of like violent acts and convictions for any crime. new york governor andrew cuomo says this attack is the 13th anti-semitic incident in new york state since december. >> i consider this an act of domestic terrorism. let's call it what it is. >> reporter: now new york mayor bill de blasio is asking for more nypd resources to protect jewish communities for the second time in recent weeks following a deadly shooting rampage at a northern new jersey kosher market which left six people dead. >> it's not coming from a single source. as we said earlier there is no specific and credible threat against new york city but it has been consistent and, therefore, we have to take extraordinary measures.

>> the suspect is being held on $5 million bail. of the five victims one is in critical condition. meanwhile police on the west coast and l.a. are also increasing patrols near synagogues in response to the stabbings. overseas a new round of u.s. air strikes targeted militants in iraq and syria who are backed by iran. secretary of state mike pompeo and defense secretary mark esper traveled to florida to brief president trump about the air strikes which followed a rocket attack that killed a u.s. contractor. pompeo says the u.s. will not tolerate actions that threaten americans. well wishes are pouring in for congressman and civil rights icon john lewis after he announced he is battling stage four pancreatic cancer. the 79-year-old says plans to undergo treatment and plans to return to washington. lewis led the 1965 bloody sunday march in selma, alabama, where he was beaten by police. he released a statement saying he's been in some kind of fight for nearly his entire life but never faced a fight like cancer.

former president obama tweeted if there is one thing i love about john lewis it's his incomparable will to fight. i know he's got a lot more of that left in him. praying for you, my friend. a deadly plane crash sparked a fire and panic in a washington, d.c. suburb. the pilot died when the single engine plane slammed into a home in lanham, maryland. but no one on the ground was hurt. one neighbor says he saw the crash. >> the plane came from behind the house and hit the carport and blew the car to the other side of the street. >> the owners of that house were out of town for the holidays. the plane was heading from college park, maryland, to new york. turning to the weather, americans from the midwest to new england are under winter storm alerts this morning. here's the radar right now. snow has been falling from kansas through the dakotas and into canada but from the great lakes to southern new england, this morning it's rain. it comes after days of treacherous driving in other parts of the country. a skidding car nearly took out this tow truck driver in

anchorage, alaska. meanwhile in northern texas, an out-of-control 18-wheeler crashed on the side of the highway. look at that. sending a state trooper running for his life. kcbd shared this video. one driver remains in the hospital. just incredible. in minnesota this school bus was sliding sideways down a street near minneapolis. the coach of the hockey team on board the bus called the driver a hero for keeping everyone safe. let's take a closer look at your monday forecast. good morning. we're tracking more snow and strong winds across the upper midwest as this storm takes its time lifting northward. the heaviest snow across portions of minnesota as well as wisconsin where one to two feet is expected by the time we head into tomorrow morning. we've got another storm into the northeast bringing ice as that colder air remains trapped at

making their return to church. the carters attended services at their church in georgia for the first time since early last month. that was when the 95-year-old carter underwent brain surgery after a series of falls at home. >> now to a new warning about the flu. the illness is now widespread in nearly every state. according to the cdc at least 4.6 million people have gotten the flu since september. most patients are being affected with a strain typically seen later in the season which tends to affect children and young adults. the cdc also says the flu has already caused more than 2,000 deaths this season possibly including a 9-year-old girl from kansas. her family says the previously healthy girl died from flu complications. if you haven't gotten a flu shot just yet, medical experts say it's not too late. >> good reminder. actor zac efron is speaking out about a terrifying brush with death while filming overseas. the 32-year-old star is now back home in the u.s. after reportedly contracting a life-threatening infection.

this morning, it's life imitating art. while filming a show called "killing zac efron" in papua new guinea, reports say zac efron was nearly killed by a sudden illness. ephron was reportedly airlifted to australia for treatment after a bacterial infection possibly typhoid transmitted to patients by contaminated food or water. before the infection hit, ephron was seen in this photo with a tour guide in papua new guinea after his battle caught possibly in the jungle. his doctors reportedly gave him the green light to fly home to the u.s. for the holidays. he will star and executive produce in the new adventure series called "killing zac efron" writing he was very thankful for everyone who has reached out adding i did get sick in papua new guinea but bounced back quick. i'm home for the holidays with my friends and family. thanks for all your love and concern. see you in 2020. glad he's doing well.

boy's mother has issued a new plea. >> reporter: the desperate search intensifies for a 14-year-old from ohio missing for more than a week. police say harley dilly was last seen in this surveillance image december 20th just blocks from his home on his way to school but he never made it. >> harley, if you're listening to this, just come home. >> reporter: dozens of agencies including the fbi are now investigating. the search expanding nationwide but in harley's home clinton the community helping cover more than 150 acres of farm fields, woods and shoreline. >> we want to get out there and talk to as many people as possible, get his name out there and come together as a community and let's try to find him. >> reporter: with no sign of her son her mother heather dilly sharing a desperate plea on facebook writing, i'm begging for a miracle. >> all right. hopefully we can get him. >> reporter: friends and family not giving up hope yet and neither are police.

>> harley's alive and i'm going to believe that until i hear otherwise. >> reporter: police have been tight-lipped about any tips they've received in this investigation. they say a search of his house turned up no clues and hundreds are gathering for a candlelight vigil trying to keep him in the community's thoughts. trevor ault, abc news, new york. new details about the deadly plane crash in louisiana on saturday. five people on board were killed when the plane went down in lafayette, barely avoiding an apartment building and hitting some power lines before crashing near a post office. three people on the ground were injured. the debris field stretches more than a quarter mile posing an extra challenge for investigators. the plane was carrying people to atlanta to watch the lsu football game. among those killed were the pilot, a mother and her teenage son and carley mccord, a reporter who covered louisiana sports. her father-in-law is a coach for lsu. he was seen on the field wiping away tears before saturday's game. meanwhile, new video of a scare on board this plane carrying the university of kansas basketball team. fire was seen shooting out of the engine. the plane returned to san jose

right now in orinda, a solo car spinout on westbound 24 before fish ranch road. the car is facing the wrong way in the center divide. a live look at 101. nice and clear this morning. 880 at the coliseum, clear ride there as well this morning. liz and kumasi? >> thank you. we are following breaking news. right now police are investigating a crash that left a pedestrian dead. >> this all happened on the northbound side of 101 in san jose. all lanes are back open at this house. abc7 news reporter julian glover is live there with what we know. good morning. >> good morning to you liz and kumasi. all of the northbound lanes of u.s. 101 are open this morning. that's big news as we expect volume to pick up as the morning rush gets on here. chp was out here for several hours overnight investigating what has been confirmed as a fatal accident. we want to show you some video. they had several lanes of u.s.

101 in the northbound direction closed for a number of hours overnight as they looked into the crash that happened right here, this was 11:30 last night. police tell me the driver did stop, but it's unclear if the driver was cited or will be facing charges. you will also notice in the video, this happened steps away from bay 101 casino. chp telling me at this time they're not sure where the pedestrian might have been going, if alcohol may have been a factor. this is very close to bay 101 casino. good news as the morning rush picks back up, all those northbound lanes are reopened. we're still waiting to learn the identity of that pedestrian who was hit and killed overnight. reporting live in san jose, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you. the time is 4:30. if you you're just joining us, good morning. we'll get you a
