vib victima vigil. liz pina was there. >> reporter: with candles that shined almost as bright as their personalities. friends and family remembered the they killed on christmas eve night. when they never returned their mother's call, she traced them to this crash. in the vehicle were also two other teens who survived, samantha arceo, a junior, and jared reynoso, who is in a coma. >> he's not doing good. he's not breathing on his own. but i know god works his miracles and he's in the room with him right now and he's holding him and he's going to wake up. >> reporter: according to chp,

the teenagers' vehicle veered out of control and hit a utility pole and a tree on foothill road in pleasanton. according to urista's mom, the teens went out at 10:00 p.m. to visit a friend on christmas night. they never returned home. what was the last thing you said to javier? >> we were on snapchat and he would send pictures of him smiling. >> these smiles are how the community wants to remember them. they were always pranking others, making it hard for people to tell them apart. even in this photo, their family fell for it one last time. mark is the one on the right and michael on the left. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. dublin high school will have grief counselors on january 7th when the students return to classes. the wo victims who survived the crash remain in the hospital. we have gofundme accounts for some of the victims on our website. in the news room, abc 7 news. police in novato are looking

for witnesses or surveillance video to help them find aman m who attacked a woman. it happened saturday night when the woman got out of her car on olive at 3rd street. the man grabbed the victim and put an object to her back, possibly a knife, and demanded money. the attacker is described as being 5'9" to six feet tall weighing 200 to 240 pounds. the woman got away when another car drove by and she screamed, starting the suspect. police say they're increasing patrols in the area. >> thanks, jobina. in the east bay, smash and grab suspects didn't get far with their stolen loot in concord. police posted these photos on social media after they were caught stealing from the jcpenney's at sun valley mall. you can see some of the items recovered in the car. the thieves led them on pursuit and police used spike strips to stop the car on highway 4. john lewis is starting his

and green line. check out their website for additions. in orinda, westbound 24 before fish ranch road, we are still following a crash there. it's not clear the extent of the injuries, it looks like someone may have hit a tree and went off the roadway there. emergency crews are still out and on the way to the scene. ntsb is investigating the helicopter crash that killed seven people in hawaii. >> the pilot and six tourists were visiting a remote part of the nepali coast on a tour featured in movies like jury ras si "jurassic park." those killed include a 14-year-old boy and the 69-year-old boy. the crash is raising questions about oversight of helicopter tours. >> tourist helicopters may or may not be held to the highest maintenance standards. they may or may not have the best pilots. do they have a good reputation?

b.a.r.t. has 29 trains running with no delays. ace 1 and 3 are on time. we're following developing news. right now police are investigating a crash that left a pedestrian dead. >> this all happened on the northbound side of 101 at brokaw road in san jose. all lanes are back open. julian glover is live there with what we know. good morning. >> good morning to you liz and kumasi. all of the northbound lanes of u.s. 101 are open this morning. there was a fatal accident involving a pedestrian here. chp had the northbound lanes closed for several hours overnight as they were investigating. here's some of the video that we shot. all of this unfolding near brokaw road around 11:30 last night. chp doesn't know why this pedestrian was crossing the northbound lanes of 101. but we know the driver did stop after hitting the pedestrian. it's unclear if that driver has been cited. notice in the video all this

more than visible. this place of refuge and worship has increased security since last year's shooting at a synagogue in pittsburgh, so has this congregation on california street. david is security director and a member of this congregation. he declined to say how security has been increased, but with the violence targeting jewish communities, sadly this house of worship had no choice. >> the anti-semitism angers me. it has to stop. and not only was it an attack against jews, it was an attack over one of the high holidays. >> reporter: rabbis across the bay area say their hope for the new year is peace. developing news, police in palo alto are investigating an act of vandalism targeting the oldest african-american church. someone sprayed angry messages on the restroom doors and in the breezeway of the

church. police say the vandalism happened sometime saturday morning. officers believe the suspect is a white man between the ages of 35 and 45 years old with blond hair. the church is the oldest african-american christian-based church between san mateo and san jose. and that follows yesterday's deadly church service in texas. this morning we're learning more about the gunman who opened fire killing two people and wounding three more. it happened at the west freeway church of christ outside of ft. worth. the shooting was captured on the live stream of the service. armed church-goers fatally shot the man after his short spray of gunfire. police are calling in the fbi to determine what the motive was. >> the fbi dedicated resources to aid in this investigation. those are investigative resources, technical resources. we're working hard to find motive to get to the bottom of what happened. >> police have not yet released the identity of the suspect or the two victims. b.a.r.t.'s early morning sweeps appear to be working when it comes to stopping fare evaders. abc7 news contributor
