before the gunman was taken down in that hail of gun fire. this in the middle of the sanctuary. a camera was rolling the entire time. livestream video captures the moment a gunman wearing a dark hoodie emerges from a back pew firing inside this texas church during sunday morning service. the gunshots sparking panic in the pews. worshippers seen ducking for cover. one man covering his wife with his own body. six seconds into the shooting two members of the church security team returned fire hitting the gunman dropping him to the ground. the 911 calls came shortly before 11:00 a.m. >> active threat, 1900 south las vegas trail. >> reporter: inside the church, at least five other parishioners pulled out handguns and carefully approached the fallen gunman. one man kicks away his gun and picks it up. >> it's a sad thing he to come

in hurt people and sad thing we had to hurt him. >> we're going to need help. >> reporter: two churchgoers and the gunman were killed. >> the citizens inside that church undoubtedly saved 242 other parishioners. >> reporter: one woman said her mother saw the suspect and noticed something was wrong. >> the shooter was sitting next to my mother. she knew from growing up in the church that she didn't recognize this gentleman. >> reporter: outside, law enforcement secured the area as parishioners visibly shaken consoled one another. >> we lost two great men today but it could have been a lot worse. >> today evil walked boldly among us but let me remind you, good people raised up and stopped it. >> reporter: the alleged hero released a statement on facebook. evil does exist in this world and i and other members aren't going to allow evil to succeed. leaders here praising the actions of church members as

heroic for stopping the attack. >> could have been a lot worse. marcus moore for us this morning, thank you. another religious community is searching for answers after a terrifying attack. five people stabbed at a rabbi's home during a hanukkah party with a large machete. new york's governor calling it an act of domestic terrorism. the suspect now in custody. stephanie ramos has more from monsey, new york. and stephanie, this is just the latest in a series of attacks in the new york area. >> reporter: it is, whit. the governor says there have been 13 anti-semitic attacks in new york this month. here in monsey, families were celebrating hanukkah when they say a man barged into the home behind me and started attacking them and they say this all could have been so much worse had they not fought back forcing him to run off. overnight, police releasing this surveillance video showing the arrest of 38-year-old grafton thomas. the man accused of attacking five people during hanukkah celebrations this weekend. police say the suspect was covered in blood.

>> report of multiple people stabbed. >> reporter: the governor of new york is calling this an act of domestic terrorism. it was around 10:00 p.m. saturday families gathered at the home of a new york state rabbi for the seventh night of hanukkah when a man burst in holding a machete. >> i need a crew for stabbing victims. >> reporter: those inside describing a scene of terror. >> i ran into the other room because i tried to save my life. i saw him running down this way. >> just swinging his sword, knife, i don't know what it was, back and forth, hitting people. >> reporter: one of the five stabbed in critical condition with a skull fracture. >> why did you do it? >> reporter: the suspect ran from the home and headed toward the nearby synagogue. this surveillance video was posted which shows the suspect leaving the scene. >> i saw him going in and followed him to make sure he doesn't go in the synagogue. >> reporter: appearing in a white plastic jumpsuit the

suspect is now charged with five counts of attempted murder. overnight, thomas' family saying, grafton thomas has a long history of mental illness and hospitalizations. he has no history of violent acts and no convictions for any crime. he has no known history of anti-semitism. new york governor andrew cuomo condemning the attack which he says is part of a pattern, this the 13th incident in new york state in the past month. >> we have increased security in this state. i think it's time to step up the law enforcement. >> reporter: and earlier this month, three people were killed after a shooting at this kosher grocery store in new jersey. the fbi says they're working to gain access to all of thomas' online accounts, his devices to figure out a motive. thomas is due back in court this friday. his bond set at $5 million. t.j. >> thank you so much. we want to turn now to some nasty weather and affecting millions. tornadoes in the south. ice in the northeast. blizzards in the plains. want to turn to our ginger zee

who's outside with the latest. ginger, a lot of people hoping for a white christmas, but it's going to be a mess of a new year's. we don't want that. t.j., we got this light rain here. this morning, 100,000 customers without power in ohio alone. thanks to the winds up to 70 miles an hour just west of cleveland. anywhere from nebraska up through maine. trudging through a foot and a half of snow, gusts over 60 miles per hour. a blizzard taking over the northern plains this holiday weekend. in humboldt, south dakota, abandoned cars littering interstate 90. people in mitchell trying to push their vehicles back onto the road. in north dakota, emergency crews and plows out in full force. blanketed in a foot of snow this fargo neighborhood buried. in iowa, ice covering the roads. this car spinning out crashing into several vehicles before coming to a stop. and in mississippi, seven

reported tornadoes. this large shed destroyed. part of the roof blown off. insulation scattered into the trees. several semis damaged in the storms. this tractor-trailer flipped. another flattened. here in times square, we'll dry out by tomorrow night but it's going be windy behind that storm. making pictures like this in minnesota, you see that bus sliding, that was from freezing rain and that's what we're concerned about along that warm front especially just north of new york city, up to albany, western massachusetts, some of the hills into the mountains there, from vermont to new hampshire will end up with snow and then snow showers are going to be place. winds could be gusting up to 30 miles per hour. the ice on the roads is going to make for rough travel especially going into new year's night.

whit. >> people not looking forward to that. thank you so much. new details on the u.s. military strikes in iraq and syria targeting a militia blamed for the attack that killed an american contractor friday. our james longman has the very latest for us this morning. james, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. these were what the u.s. defense department called precision defensive strike, f-15 strike eagles hit five sites in western iraq and eastern syria. the target, an iranian-backed militia. a december nighted terror group. iraqi security services say 25 of its fighters were killed and more than 50 injured. all this is in response to friday's attack on an iraqi base where 30 rockets were fired, killing a u.s. contractor. the u.s. has long accused iran of cultivating and supporting u.s. designated terror groups across the middle east. secretaries of defense and state mike pompeo and mark esper flew to president trump's home to brief him and pompeo said these latest strikes show the u.s.

will not tolerate actions that put american lives at risk and the state department has not ruled out any further action. amy. >> all right, james longman, we appreciate the latest on that. the president as you mentioned is in mar-a-lago firing off angry tweets as the impeachment standoff shows no signs of letting up. rachel scott has more now from florida this morning. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: amy, good morning. president trump will be heading into an election year still locked in this battle over impeachment. lawmakers are continuing to argue over the ground rules of a senate trial but no real signs of progress and the uncertainty over this trial has aggravated the president. he has repeatedly lashed out at house speaker nancy pelosi for withholding the articles of impeachment. pelosi says she will not take the next step until the senate reveals the structure for a trial and all of this boils down to witnesses. democrats want top aides to testify. republicans are making no guarantees and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he cannot move forward without those articles of impeachment in hand and lawmakers won't be back until after the start of the new

year. amy. >> rachel, one of the witnesses democrats want to call is the president's acting chief of staff mick mulvaney. there are new reports this morning shedding some light about his role in delaying that security aid to ukraine. >> reporter: that's right, amy. a "new york times" report is revealing just how involved mulvaney was in executing the president's demands to freeze that military aid to ukraine. inquiring about the funds weeks before the president's now-infamous phone call with the leader of ukraine that triggered the impeachment investigation. "the new york times" also reports that top aides tried to convince the president back in august to release the funds but that was something that was not done until september after congress had already started its investigation. amy. >> much more to come. rachel scott, thanks so much. t.j. we turn now to that outpouring of support for congressman john lewis. the civil rights pioneer and longtime georgia congressman announced he's being treated for stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

the 79-year-old said in a statement, i have been this some kind of fight for freedom, equality, basic human rights for nearly my entire life. i have never faced a fight quite like the one i have now. he adds that doctors tell him he has a fighting chance. he says this was caught during a routine doctor visit. he's also vowing to keep fighting for his constituents and he has no plans to step down from congress. he is asking for your prayers, however. among the well-wishers, former president barack obama along with bernice king, who tweeted a picture of lewis marching beside her father in 1966 and she writes, i am praying for him and encouraged by the knowledge that he is a legendary fighter. fight on, sir. >> true icon. people on both sides of the aisle definitely praying for him this morning. >> he is a titan of the civil rights movement. >> no question. >> we wish him the best. we do want to turn now to new details on that plane crash in louisiana that left five people dead including a sports reporter. investigators racing to determine what caused the plane

husband sharing his heartbreak explaining that the pair was supposed to drive to the peach bowl together but at the last minute he couldn't get off work. he had to be sedated in the hospital after hearing the news telling abc, my world fell apart. the crash killed five on board including gretchen vincent and her teenage son walker. one person survived, critically injured. >> oh, my gosh, there is a survivor. so i was like, what? so we got closer and they pulled a guy out of the burning flame. >> reporter: flight data shows the plane had a steep downward turn and getting no response from the pilot. the plane barely clearing an apartment building before striking power lines and crashing into the post office parking lot below. >> the wreckage is in pretty tough shape between impact damage and fire damage, so there's not a lot to work with. >> reporter: there's a month-long investigation ahead.

on that health scare for zac efron. the actor is thanking concerned fans confirming he got sick while filming his new adventure show in new guinea. abc's will reeve is here with the story and good morning to you. this is scary stuff. >> reporter: it was, and zac efron was in papua new guinea. that's just north of australia about as remote as it gets when he contracted a bacterial infection that reportedly could have been deadly. he did make it through. he's back home recovering but that show he was filming, the title is a bit on the nose given what almost happened. this morning, it's life imitating art. while filming a show called "killing zac efron" in papua new guinea, zac efron was nearly killed by a sudden illness. he was airlifted to australia for treatment of a bacterial infection, possibly typhoid. transmitted to patients by contaminated food or water. before the infection hit ephron was seen in this photo with a tour guide in papua new guinea. the star confirming his ordeal

on social media posting that he did get sick but bounced back quick thanking his well-wishers, many of whom fell in love with efron when he was a teen heartthrob in "high school musical." ♪ we're breaking free soaring flying ♪ >> reporter: before taking on more dramatic roles like his critically acclaimed portrayal of serial killer ted bundy earlier this year. ♪ lonely days are gone, i'ma going home, my baby wrote me a letter ♪ >> reporter: in addition to "killing zac efron," a show for the soon to debut streaming service, quibi, a reality series, where he ventures into a remote jungle he stars in his own youtube series called "off the grid" where he shows off his wild side. after his battle with the illness likely caught in the jungle, efron's australian doctors reportedly gave him the greenlight to fly home to the u.s. for the holidays. efron writing in his post that

>> reporter: t.j. good morning. but other cities in australia including canberra, the capital, canceling theirs. this morning, the tenth australian firefighter lose his life as they continue to battle to try to rescue those people who are trapped. this morning, thousands of tourists trapped behind a curtain of fire slung across parts of eastern australia. the evacuation of a popular tourist area east of melbourne sunday was considered one of the largest evacuations in australian history. >> it's time that you left. there's not enough trucks to go around. so don't count on a fire truck protecting your particular house. you need to get out of there. >> reporter: but then, authorities warned the fire had moved. it had become too late to leave. ordering residents and tourists to shelter in place. massive clouds of smoke quickly approaching homes and buildings near australia's biggest cities as conditions nationwide worsened. >> extreme fire dangers.

the strong winds that were forecast and the very hot temperatures have all come as we thought. >> reporter: more than 2,000 firefighters battling the flames on the ground, and in the air. over 100 fires still active. many of them uncontained. the fires upgraded to severe over the weekend as temperatures reached into the triple digits. the searing flames placing australia's wildlife under serious threat. federal environmental minister susan ley spoke to australia's abcam radio program about the potential loss to the koala population, an already threatened species. >> it may well be up to 30% of the population in the region because up to 30% of their habitat has been destroyed. we'll know more when the fires are calmed down and a proper assessment can be made. >> reporter: firefighters and residents helping out animals impacted by the heat. >> a very thirsty boy. >> reporter: one cyclist

we're back with the investigation into that deadly tourist helicopter crash in hawaii. the vacation nightmare sparking new safety concerns about these sightseeing tours. abc's will carr is live in kauai with much more. will, good morning. >> reporter: and whit, there's no doubt about it. this is paradise. people come from all over the world to take in this gorgeous island. that's exactly what two families were doing when something went tragically wrong. this morning, a federal investigation team is on the ground searching for answers after a fatal helicopter crash that killed all seven on board on the coast of hawaii. according to authorities the sightseeing helicopter with six passengers and the pilot was flying just over a mile inland

near kauai's na pali coast when it struck a cliff wall and plummeted killing the pilot, a family of four from switzerland and amy gannon and her 13-year-old daughter joceyln. on a family vacation from wisconsin. her grieving husband sharing the last picture with abc news he took with his wife and daughter before the crash. along with a note he wrote remembering his daughter, you are the sweetest person in the world. i know you were scared. i wish i was there with you. i hope you were holding mommy's hand. it's just not right what happened to you. i will never forget your courage, toughness, concern for others. you were so amazing and i wish i could have had more time with you. the tourism company safari helicopters says it's fully cooperating with the ntsb and the faa. it says the chopper's pilot paul matero had 12 years of flying experience. >> you could tell he really loved it because the knowledge he had about that island. >> reporter: hawaii is known for breathtaking views featured in movies like "jurassic park" and "the pirates of the caribbean."

countless tourists flock to hawaii to see the vistas in person, but this latest crash has people questioning the safety of helicopter tours. representative ed case tweeting, tour helicopter and small aircraft operations are not safe and innocent lives are paying the price. according to the ntsb, there have been 18 civilian helicopter crashes in hawaii since 2015 and according to u.s. helicopter safety team, fatalities from u.s. helicopter deaths jumped 20% from 2017 to 2018. >> these tourist helicopters may or may not be held to the highest maintenance standards. they may or may not have the best pilots. do they have a good reputation? do the helicopters look new and well taken care of? these are some things that they can do to take care of themselves and hopefully prevent these kind of mishaps. >> reporter: while the investigation continues, the ntsb now has four investigators here on the scene. guys. >> all right, thank you so much. and coming up here, take a

the middle of that church service, and parishioners who intervened are being called heroes. livestream video captures the moment a gunman wearing a dark hoodie emerges from a back pew drawing his gun and firing inside this texas church during sunday morning service. six seconds into the shooting two members of the church security team returned fire hitting the gunman dropping him to the ground. the 911 calls came shortly before 11:00 a.m. >> active threat, 1900 south las vegas trail. >> reporter: inside the church at least five other parishioners pulled out handguns and carefully approached the fallen gunman. one man kicks away his gun and picks it up. >> we are going to need help with patient care. >> reporter: two churchgoers and the gunman were killed. >> the citizens who were inside that church, undoubtedly saved 242 other parishioners. >> reporter: one woman said her mother, a longtime member of the church, saw the suspect and noticed something was wrong. >> the shooter was sitting next to my mother.

healthy eating after the holidays. the new book, "breaking up with sugar" takes a look at how you can fix your relationship with sweets. i think we all need help with that. i know i do. adrienne sat down with the author of this book. >> especially approaching this time of year a lot of us try to give up the desserts, right, as we try to get more fit. the woman you're about to meet says she can help you do just that, and she found life is sweeter without sugar. >> reporter: for three decades, addictions and eating disorder therapist molly carmel said she had a toxic relationship with food. >> my first diet at the age of 7. >> reporter: she tried and failed at weight loss having gastric bypass surgery. at her heaviest, she was 325 pounds. >> the thing i never looked at mostly because i didn't want to, was my relationship with sugar. it numbed me. it made me feel good. it nurtured me and the breakup was necessary. >> reporter: her new book, "breaking up with sugar" reveals a plan to eliminate that sweet five-letter word. >> i had less cravings. i was releasing weight. you know, emotionally my mood was better. i was more hopeful and the same exact thing was happening with

the people that i was treating. you release shame. you release old stories. it's really important that we examine some beliefs that we hold about food and make a decision if they're really true. >> oh, there was one that i loved which is if i don't eat sugar, then i'm boring because i'm not going to have any fun. >> what if you gave it up? maybe you would even be more fun. >> reporter: the goal is to live life every day sugar-free. carmel recommends starting with a two-month commitment. for some people there's a fear in forever as you write. >> yes, forever is a really long time but, you know, we make so many new year's resolutions and by january 14th we failed again and that does something to a spirit. in my clinic i find around that two-month mark is where people start to see the real results like and actually they don't want to go back. >> you don't have a diet. in fact, you say divorce your diet. >> oh, my. america's obsession with compulsive dieting may be as bad as our problems with sugar.

>> reporter: she calls her approach a relationship rebuild plan, resetting the way we think about food. can we have fruit? >> of course. fruit is made from nature. when you give up all the other sugars you will be so surprised how sweet an apple is. it's really true. >> not as sweet as birthday cake. >> but maybe not a bad idea to look at your relationship with birthday cake if you're saying you can't give it up. >> speak to me as somebody who's on the other side of that 325 pounds. are you happy with the woman you are today? >> you know, i look at these pictures of myself when i was this chunky little 7-year-old girl, and i want to take her in a hug and i want to say, it's going to be better than you ever imagined. i promise. >> now, there are a few other things to keep in mind like on this plan you can't have any gluten flour so no bread. >> more rolls? >> no pasta. yeah, i know. here's what you can do. molly suggests the fifth ingredient rule. so, if sugar is the fifth ingredient or less on your food

personalwise, you need to move on. and it's hard and you need to plan it and you have to just have a happy life. >> you can take ownership of having a happy life. it was really inspiring to read your words. >> thank you. >> how you embrace your age. you're 71 years old. >> yes, i am. >> and looking fabulous and you know it. >> and feel great. yes. >> i love that. there are things you open up about in the book, though, things aren't always great and you are very honest about that in this book, a troubled relationship, becoming a single mother with three kids. how did you find your strength during those tough times? what got you through it and not just got you through it but elevated you to where you are now? >> well, there were a lot of struggles and elon said, if you are writing a book, you have to write about your struggles because of course, they went through them all with me. >> kids keep you honest. >> they do and they find that people, of course, my instagram is fabulous, you know. i'm perfect and all that and at

the moment i'm feeling really great but you go through many stages in your life and if you are having a hard time, you need to make a change. >> i love that. just be willing to make a change to say this isn't working. >> and it's scary. >> very scary. >> and you might be economically challenged which is what i went through a lot. >> what was the scariest change you made? >> the scariest change is you're going to have confidence and then you have to build it up but you don't want to complain because then nobody wants you around so you just have to keep on focusing on doing the work that you love to do and making sure your children are healthy and making sure you're eating well so you have a lot of energy. >> you mentioned your children, of course, we all know elon but your other children, one a plan philanthropic chef, and the other a filmmaker. >> yes. >> what did you do to raise such successful people in your live, these amazing children you have? what tips do you give as a parent? >> i brought them up like my parents brought me up, to be completely independent. always helping them.

they did good for people. i'm as a dietitian, of course, i was looking after people all the time. helping them with their eating habits and my children are doing good things. i mean tosca with passion flicks, romance movies where the woman is strong and the woman is the lead and she gets the same pay as the men. >> ah, well, that's fantastic. >> i know. >> something to be proud of as a mother. there is a photo you tweeted that caught our attention of elon back in 1995 fixing a car. you're looking at that picture right there. did you know back then that he had it in him to be what he is today? >> i always thought, well, he is a genius and can you always apply it to something practical but from the beginning every project he took on, it was to improve life on earth and so when you have to fix your car you have to fix it. >> i love that. you got to be able to make a change if you need to. >> do it yourself. >> along with raising these children you juggled, you mentioned as a nutritionist two

careers and a model and become a cover girl at the age of 69. >> it's about time. >> what do you say to women who feel like at a certain age, they're just not valuable anymore? >> well, then you have to find out why. why do you not feel valuable? is somebody making you feel less valuable? i mean, men don't have that problem. >> no. >> but women do, and we need to support each other, and also men need to support us so we feel good about ourselves. >> this book will absolutely be a game changer for a lot of women who might be struggling with that. thank you so much. please welcome kelly leveque. great to be with you again. >> thanks for having me back. so excited to be here. everyone wants to do a quick fix but consistently eating healthy will help you. it will always yield the best results, so instead of being restrictive with my clients, i'm looking for them to add to their plate instead. >> you say this is so not about diet but lifestyle. when is it going to stick? how will you make it stick. >> what i did, i'm changing the relationship by adding to their plate instead so instead of depriving i ask them to add four things to their plate. this is a structured lifestyle. it's their checklist of what they need on their plate at every meal. >> it smells delicious. your first technique is the domestic goddess? >> it is, but every single archetype follows the fab four. it's protein, fat, fiber and greens.

fab four regulates hunger hormones and balances your blood sugar. this goes into the fab four in detail but through my archetypes so domestic goddess, girl on the go, so your domestic goddess sometimes means more cookies than veggies. we just got through the holidays. >> we're all there. >> i did make a hummus, but i also made two different cookies. the ratio. >> this archetype focuses on fiber and greens. majority of americans get less than 15 grams of fiber and the daily recommended value is 25 grams so this is an example of those homemade from scratch meals for the domestic goddess. sunflower seed hummus with veggies. if you can't get your kids to eat them we have cheesy kale chips. it's knew knew nutritional yeast. >> my 4-year-old calls them doritos. we've convinced him -- >> good luck with that. >> i love that so much. >> i'm supposed to take us to the girl on the go. >> so no one lives in a vacuum. we have to be able to eat out at

company dinners or find something in an airport. that sometimes means buying a protein bar. in this i go through how to pick a protein bar. you need to have the majority of the barb protein. otherwise it's a carb and sugar bar, right? so what we need to do first is compare the net carbohydrates to the protein. so if we look at our nutrition fact here, you take the total carbohydrates and subtract the fiber out, and compare that to the protein. >> here it's 14 minus 6. >> 12, right? >> no, 8. 14 minus 6 is 8. >> tv people are great at math. >> more protein than net carbohydrates. that's your first check. next make sure you understand the ingredients. right? it should be things like almond butter, cashews, collagen and third thing you want to look for is minimal amount of sugar. less than five grams. the architect goes through it. >> the next plan here, plant based diets are all the rage but it's important to pack in the protein as well. you have hey plan for that.
