i app a-flying. what happened to one woman who was allergic to her seatmate. >> why would somebody shoot a pet that's not bothering you? it's shocking. >> it happened to this dog in menlo park. a beloved dog. his owner hoping he will recover. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. police are searching for the person who shots the dog as it played in its yard and rode off on a bike. >> anser hassan has more on the dog's condition tonight. >> when that shot was let off, i rushed out here. it was my first instinct. and all i heard was rumble cry. >> reporter: damian young has been raising his pit bull rambo since he was a pup. he gets emotional thinking about last night. he was the one who had to call 911 after rambo was shot in the neck. >> going back inside to call 911, i was crying the whole time. >> did you think your dog may not make it? >> that was going through my mind the entire time.

>> young says his dad took rambo out sunday night to play in the yard. a young man dressed in all black and riding a hoodie was riding a bike down the block. rambo saw the bike and ran towards the fence barking. that's when he was shot. >> the bullet was shot grazing his shoulder and heart and lung. it is so lucky for rambo. >> rambo is currently being treated at sage in palo alto. doctors say he will survive. collin, who has been living in the neighborhood for the past 25 years saying there is no reason for anyone to open fire at a dog playing in a residential neighborhood, even in self-dfrs. >> it's unbelievable. why would someone shoot a pet, a dog that's not bothering you? why would someone do that? >> young and his family are happy rambo survived the shooting. they have big plans when he comes home. >> he played it off so smooth. he has such a gold heart. >> menlo park say their investigation is ongoing. anser hassan, abc7 news. robbers use a stun gun to

help them steal electronics from a store in the peninsula. san bruno police released surveillance image of the two robbers. police say the men used a stun gun on a security guard as they ran out of the store with stolen computers and into a stolen car. the security guard was not seriously hurt. it happened last night at the best buy on el camino real. the men got away in a silver or gray cadillac or nissan. sky 7 was over gray whale cove where there is a search for a car that reportedly went over the cliff. someone saw a vehicle speeding over the edge around 11:00 this morning. cal fire says car parts were found in the water, but it's not clear if they're connected to this incident. organizers from mothers against drunk driving made an impassioned plea to state lawmakers today. they're supporting a bill by state senator jerry hill to expand the use of an anti-drunk driving technology in california, devices known as ignition interlocks require the driver to blow into an on-board breathalyzer in order to start

the car. maad member mary lost her son and beliefs the interlocks are the most direct way to deal with this problem. >> not only does sb-545 save lives, it allows the offenders to be able to work, to drive their children to school, to drive to and from treatment. they just cannot drive impaired. >> the bill would require even first-time dui offenders to install the device in order to retain their driving privileges. its backers say it's working to lower the cost for lower income drivers. you can expect extra officers on the road starting tomorrow for the new year's holiday. the chp's maximum enforcement period begins at 6:01 on new year's eve and ends at midnight on january 1. officers will be on the lookout for people drunk driving or high. just last week during their christmas enforcement, the highway patrol says ten people were killed and 271 people arrested on suspicion of dui.

today caltrans started cleaning up the trash at a park n ride in concord. residents have been complaining about the mess for a long time. laura anthony has a look at this effort to help build a better bay area. laura? >> well, hi there. a park n ride is meant to get people out of their cars and into commuting with others. but in this case here in concord, this park n ride had become so problematic that people were actually afraid to park their cars here. neighbors say it's been a long time coming. a major cleanup of a park n ride in concord that has been overrun by a homeless encampment, garbage and illegal dumping. do you park your car here? >> yeah. >> do you feel safe? >> no. >> the park n ride is on property owned by caltrans. so it was caltrans crews that moved in in force to do the cleanup.

the effort came only after local blog, claycourt.com posted a story on the lot and commuters' fears about using it. >> this should have been done a lot sooner. >> the sales manager of the car dealership next door says he is synthet sympathetic to the homeless, even giving them food and hot water, but the issues in the lot have become an issue for employees and customers. >> needles, bottles, blankets, food. it's not safe for anybody. i mean, my employees, there are nights that they leave at 11:00 at night, 12:00 at night. >> i understand where they're coming from, but they don't understand where we're coming from. >> antuan says he has lived at the parking lot for six months. so where do you go? >> wherever we can. there are not too many places we can go. >> reporter: do you have a new year's wish? >> get a job and get off the streets. >> reporter: now caltrans told us late this afternoon that the campers here are not officially being evicted, that today's

breaking news in vallejo. sky 7 went over eastbound interstate 80 just a few minutes ago. the freeway is shut down at the magazine street overpass, and you can see the resulting backup. that's caused traffic to back up all the way across the carquinez bridge, in fact. just look at this. there is a person standing on the magazine street overpass surrounded by police. we're not sure what he or she wants. traffic is moving in the westbound direction, but not at the usual speed as drivers slow down to see what's happening. whether it's a service animal or emotional support animal, it's rare these days to be on a flight that doesn't have a pet. but what happens when someone has a pet allergy? it happened on a recent flight

from oakland to seattle. and tonight we're asking what you think. should passengers be alerted when someone is flying with an animal? we have a poll open right now at abc7news.com/vote. you can see the options on your screen. we're going keep the poll over as melanie woodrow tells us more. >> if you traveled by air over the holidays, you may have noticed some furry passengers getting on planes. this past thursday at oakland international airport, erskine patton was a passenger on alaska airlines flight 335 to seattle. >> as i was boarding, i noticed that a woman. >> that passenger seated near a dog was having an asthma attack. airplane ops called for help. >> engine 27, needed for an asthma attack. patient on board alaska flight gate 14, terminal 1. >> i was just concerned for this woman. >> patton tweeted at alaska air, why are dogs allowed on board when allergy risk is possible? we don't know the status of this

poor woman and many passengers will miss their connections. alaska air tweeting back. unfortunately, we simply cannot guarantee that animals will not be on board as many are service animals. alaska airlines writes if a passenger is allergic to pets, our policy is to move the pet and its owner to the back of the aircraft, which is what happened in this case. the woman was evaluated by medics and returned to the plane and her original seat. alaska airlines says the delay was caused by a small unrelated maintenance issue. >> but also annoyed with the delay. >> a spokesperson with oakland international airport says policies regarding traveling with pets vary depending on the individual airline. melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> okay. so let's look at the results from abc7news.com/vote. you can see on the bottom of your screen, should passengers be notified if an animal is going to be on the flight? right now 92% of people say yes, where 8% are saying no.

melanie tweeted an online poll. so far 64% of those say they would want to know ahead of time. >> interesting. two bay area hospitals make a national top 20 list, and we'll see new food labels designed to give us the full picture. 7 on your side's michael finney is here with those stories tonight. michael? >> eating better is going to be just a little bit easier to pull off now. new fda rules require nutritional labels to be a bit more specific. from now on, many packaged goods will have to say not just how many calories per servings and how many serving per package, but how many calories in the entire package. that's important because many times you take a quick glance and do not get the full picture. for instance, take this little bag of macaroons. a quick glance shows you the calorie count is 170, but there are two serves in this. so 340 calories in the bag.

that will now be much more clear. bigger companies have to tell you this january. a little bit smaller food packaging companies will have to tell you the next january 1st. time is running out for people impacted by california wildfires to file a claim against pg&e. the deadline is tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. it covers victims impacted by fires that occurred before january 29th. now that includes the camp fire in butte county and the north bay firestorm. people can submit a claim online or in person at pg&e service centers in napa and santa rosa. those who miss the deadline risk getting no compensation from the utility company. u.s. news and world report's latest best hospital ratings lists two bay area hospitals in its top 20 list. ucsf medical center in san francisco and stanford medical care stanford hospital in palo alto. this is the 30th year the

publication has released its hospital rankings. u.s. news says it researches 25 adult medical specialties, procedures, and conditions. it also says it evaluated nearly every community hospital in the nation. top two. congratulations. >> that's big news. thanks, michael, very much. the new year will bring some monstrous waves to the bay area's coastline. waves in excess of 35 feet are expected to break near mavericks and san mateo county wednesday evening. sky 7 gave us a preview when it flew past pillar point earlier today. surfers are excited. many are flying in to try to catch some waves. the national weather service is warning, though, of dangerous sneaker waves that could pull unsuspecting people out into the open ocean. >> that's intense. all right. let's take a look as we start this week and end this year at the forecast. >> and look at the sky behind us. >> gorgeous. >> how about that? the year is winding down on a nice mainly clear note. it looks like we could have good viewing conditions tomorrow night for the fireworks display.

surf that's develop right now and the growing wave heights. a beach statement in effect from 1:00 p.m. tomorrow to 9:00 p.m. wednesday. there is a risk of dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves. so bear in mind if you expect to be down along the coastline. and wave heights could exceed 20 feet at some point. so we'll keep watch on that. here is our forecast animation from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow night. notice during the overnight hours tomorrow night going into tomorrow morning, we might see a few high clouds moving through 8:00 or so tomorrow morning. 2:00 in the afternoon, another little wave of thin high clouds will swing through. it's going to be a bright day. evening hours tomorrow night, as we approach midnight, and we anticipate the fireworks. we'll see another wave of high clouds moving through. but again, it looks like it's going to be a wave of thin high clouds. so it shouldn't really interfere much with our view of the fireworks at midnight tomorrow night. overnight tonight, look for a few high passing clouds, and we'll see overnight lows mainly in the upper 30s to 40 in the
