with goods worth thousands of dollars all in one night. take a look. they were caught on camera. meet the holiday guests nobody invited. these three burglars caught on security camera saturday inside a san ramon home while residents were away. this wasn't their only stop. police say the crooks hit six houses in one night. >> we've never had six in one night. >> reporter: police say this burglary crew was experienced, likely looking for homes that were dark and appeared to be unoccupied. once inside they searched for two th >> specifically jewelry and cash. >> reporter: how they broke in was always the same. >> in all of the cases, they either smashed the rear slider wow,ey smashed a window that'sa >> yeah. >> whoa. >> reporter: we showed the security video to neighbor andrew yu. >> around here we haven't seen any break-ins recently -- well,

ever. >> reporter: police say a witness saw the suspects leaving one house in a dark-colored mercedes with paper plates. >> we were away for christmas, but i had my lamps on. so, yeah, kind of shocking. >> reporter: homeowner dora deangelis is making sure she's not the next burglary victim. >> i think lights do help a lot. if i'm away for more than a few days, i do check my cameras when i'm away just to see any suspicious activities, cars driving by. >> reporter: while police search for clues, they tell homeowners that alarm systems, surveillance cameras, even a big dog are deterrents for thieves and leaving lights on when you're not home, not a bad idea either. live in san ramon tonight, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> thank you, cornell. new at 11:00 in the south bay, two cats were rescued during a house fire in san jose. we see one of them there. the fire started around 9:00 p.m. on live oak way. you can see the smoke billowing out of the home there. firefighters had the flames under control in about 30

minutes. there's no word on whether anyone was hurt. but you can see the extensive damage from that fire. californians will ring in the new year with hundreds of new laws that go on the books, many of which will affect you and your family. >> kate larsen has a look at what 2020 has in store for your kids and their schools. >> reporter: there are new laws on the books that boost education spending, fix up classrooms and further define charter schools. but many of the new laws also focus on the physical and mental health of children, older kids will be snoozing for joy. a new law to be phased in over the next three years means california high schools will not be allowed to start earlier than 8:30 a.m. and middle schools will start no earlier than 8:00 a.m. advocates for the new law say later start times will help combat sleep deprivation and improve student achievement. another law requiring that all employees dealing with food preparation be trained and certified in food allergy safety. according to the cdc, food

allergies affect an estimated 8% of children in the united states or one in 13 kids. the bill was introduced following the death of a 13-year-old arin da girl who had a severe reaction to peanuts at a summer camp. another lunch room law will strengthen lunch shaming bans. the new law will require all children get the same meal even if their family isn't up to date on meal fees. with all the concern about the safety of youth football that has led to a major dip in participation, a new law now limits full contact to two practices per week. this law was actually a victory for football advocates who were lobbying against an outright ban on youth tackle football. now, we have a complete list of all of california's new laws for 2020. you can check it out on our website, abc7news.com. we hope you have a very happy new year. for abc7, i'm kate larsen. back to you. >> thanks, kate. let's go ahead and take a live look from the abc7 roof camera. will we have clear skies for tomorrow night's fireworks?

abc7 news weather anchor spencer christian has the answer for us tonight. spencer. >> here's a look at live doppler 7. clear skies right now and calm conditions. i'm going to give you a little look at our forecast animation starting 6:00 tomorrow morning. so going through the day on new year's eve, we'll see the passage of a few thin high clouds. 8:00 in the morning, a few high clouds around. 12 noon, a few high clouds as well. even into the mid afternoon. but check out the evening hours. after 6:00 p.m., skies become clearer and even into the late night hours as midnight approaches and of course the fireworks display. looks like mainly clear skies and good viewing. i'll give you a look at what the first two days of the new year will hold for us in just a few minutes. now, if you want to stay home, stay with abc7. dick clark's new year's rockin' eve with ryan seacrest begins at 8:00 p.m. traffic is back to normal tonight on 80 in vallejo. the freeway was shut down in both directions just before 5:00 p.m. at the magazine street overpass. sky7 captured the huge backup

this created. look at it. traffic in the eastbound direction stretched across the carquinez bridge. all lanes opened around 6:00 p.m. we did see police talking to a man standing on the overpass. it is still not clear tonight if a car did undeed go over a cliff at gray whale cove in san mateo county. crews looked for signs of that vehicle. someone reported seeing a sedan speeding over the edge. that was about 11:00 this morning. cal fire says car parts were found in the water, but it's not sure if they are connected to this particular incident. developing news. moments of sheer panic and fear were captured in the video of a church service yesterday near fort worth, texas. it took an armed church member six seconds to take down the gunman. we're now hearing from that parishioner and learning about the lives lost. >> oh, lord my god. >> reporter: a vigil for the lives lost in the texas church shooting. ♪ then sings my soul >> a sunday service interrupted

by gunshots when a shooter opened fire. [ sound of gunfir ] >> reporter: before at least six armed parishioners fought back. churchgoer jack wilson firing a single shot, killing the gunman before he could harm anyone else. >> i don't feel like i'm a hero. i was doing what i needed to do to protect the people of the congregation. >> reporter: the gunman identified as keith thomas kin anin seen here from a prior arrest. two parishioners were killed in the attack. wallace's grandson was in the snch sanctuary at the time. >> the gunman stood up and turned around to him. so it was probably like three feet away from my papa. it was kind of like heartbreaking, but sometimes you got to be strong about it and just keep on going. >> reporter: the state's attorney general calling this church a model, praising a new state law that affirms the right of licensed handgun holders to carry a weapon in a place of worship. >> we can't prevent every crazy

person from pulling a gun, but we can be prepared like this church was. >> reporter: now a community mourning. >> i lost two great men, friends, men that i consider putting above myself, who did the same for me. >> reporter: investigators including the fbi are still working to determine a motive for the gunman but say he had been to the church several times before and was arrested in 2016 for unlawful possession of a weapon in new jersey. his sister says she believes her brother went on a suicide mission. abc news, los angeles. new developments meantime tonight in the attack at a hanukkah celebration. investigators say the suspect had handwritten journals containing anti-semitic references. grafton thomas now faces hate crime charges. he's accused of wounding five people with a machete on saturday in new york. the man who escaped says he returned and hit the attacker with a table. thomas' family says he has a history of mental illness.

new developments with a dog that was shot while playing in the yard of his menlo park owner's house. >> damian young shared this video with abc7 news of rambo returning home tonight. damian says a man on a bicycle shot the dog in the neck last night and then rode off. he feared for the worst. the bullet also grazed the pit bull's heart and lungs. >> just i don't know. just going back inside to call 911, i was crying the whole time. >> did you think your dog may not make it? >> oh, that was -- that was going through my mind the entire time. >> damian's dad saw the gunman described as being dressed in all black and wearing a hooded sweatshirt. the suspect remains on the loose tonight. they survived a fire, flood, and even a robbery. now one san jose family's luck may change with a generous post-christmas surprise. finding solutions. cruising concord, help build a better bay area by taking care of a major eyesore.

not all of us chose to be homeless. >> this effort a local blog posted a story on the lot and commuters' fears about using it. now, we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. better bay area group on facebook. new developments. a family in san jose victimized twice this month is getting a boost that they really need. an anonymous couple from los gatos has given the family $20,000. the family has been searching for a place to live ever since a fire destroyed their home. then someone stole what was left of their belongings. mercury news reports the donors came forward after reading about the family's plight in the newspaper. tomorrow will be the last day sadly for a longtime palo alto deli. village cheese house has been at the town & country village since 1959. it's known for fresh-baked bread and its house bread. our partners at the mercury news report the owners are closing to

see occasional high clouds passing by through new year's eve and into new year's day. the new year will get off to a dry start and there's a slight chance of rain this weekend. before we get to that, let's take a look at this. beach hazard statement in effect from 1:00 p.m. tomorrow to 9:00 p.m. wednesday. wave heights are growing. the surf is rough and there's a risk of dangerous rip currents or sneaker waves so bear that in mind if you plan to be along any of the bay area's beaches. here's our forecast animation. starting at midnight tonight through the day tomorrow, every once in a while, a few thin high clouds passing through. around midday, some more thin high clouds passing by. in the afternoon as well. by early evening, we'll see the clouds moving out of here. skies will be mainly clear. going into the late night hours as midnight approaches and the launching, i guess you call that, of looks like good viewing conditions. overnight tonight, look for low

temperatures dropping into 30s in our inland valleys. highs tomorrow will range from upper 50s to about 60 degrees in most locations. a little bit milder santa rosa, cloverdale, ukiah will see 62, 63 degrees in those locations. and here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. the new year as i mentioned will get off to a dry start on wednesday, but it will be pretty mild even with increasing clouds. we'll see high temperatures in the low to mid-60s around the bay and inland on wednesday and thursday. on friday, brighter skies. slightly cooler. increasing clouds over the weekend. and a slight chance of the new year's first rainfall in the north bay. but not enough of a chance yet to put a ranking on it. just a slight chance. >> just put it in the back of our mind. >> exactly. >> thanks, spencer. lussy hail chats about co-hosting dick clark's new year's

abc7 got a close-up look at the preparations for san francisco's big new year's celebration. crews putting the finishing touches today at pier 50. the pyrotechnics show should last about 16 minutes and is driven by a computer. there are some new wrinkles this year that should send fireworks shooting close to 2,000 feet in the air. >> we're also using some equipment that we haven't used on this display before. so we've got much more angles that we can play with and we can get a little bit more intricate with the way we display each segment of the show. >> the whole show is triggered by what's called a deadman's switch. it keeps the fireworks going. if something goes wrong, all they have to do is release the button and the whole show stops. we hope that doesn't happen. >> don't get distracted. you have to stay focused. concentrate. >> i'm right here. >> i wouldn't trust him with it. >> i don't want our show to
