>> thanks. in the south bay two cats are safe this morning after firefighters rescued them from a house fire. >> it started around 9:00 last night. you can see the smoke coming from the home. firefighters got the flames under control in about 30 minutes or so and medics helped one person who had smoke inhalation issues. no word on how much damage the fire caused. new details this morning about a san jose family victimized twice this month. this morning they'r getting the boost they need. an anonymous couple is giving the gomez family $20,000. they have been searching for a place to live ever since a fire destroyed their home. soon after that someone stole what was left of their belongings. the family says they are overwhelmed by the generous donation. this morning the family house that was famous for being decked out in novato won abc's "the great christmas light fight." they were hit by a holiday thief. this is according to the marin independent journal. the family says ever since they appeared on the show the house has gotten even more popular for

visitors, as you can imagine. last week they noticed two iphones were missing from the kitchen where the father takes pictures as santa claus with guests. they installed security cameras. the house is open every night through monday. happening today at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline for people impacted by california wildfires. >> if you want to file a claim against pg&e the deadlie is for those impacted by fires that occurred before january 29th and that includes the devastating campfire in butte county and the north bay firestorm. people can submit a claim in person at select pg&e service centers or online. missing the deadline means victims risk getting no compensation from the utility company. it was established as part of pg&e's bankruptcy process. we still have a ways to go until midnight. several countries have already rang in the 2020 new decade. here are the fireworks from auckland, new zealand, where the

clock struck midnight at 3:00 a.m. our time. sydney, australia, rang in the new year with this iconic fireworks display over sydney harbor bridge. ♪ all right. that is a big party. i want to go to sydney next year. now i know where to go. okay, the issue here, though, a big controversy over this display. there had been calls for the fireworks to be canceled because of the wildfires burning in much of the state where sydney is located. more than 900 homes destroyed as record temperatures and strong winds create dangerous conditions. the mayor of sydney said canceling the celebration would have little practical benefit for affected communities. she's encouraging people to donate to the red cross. keep it right here on abc 7 as we count down to the new year. dick clark's new year's rocking

eve with ryan seacrest with performances by paula abdul, sheryl crow, usher as well just to name a few. the broadcast begins here at 8:00 p.m. liz? thanks, jobina. this time of year a lot of talk about new laws going into effect starting tomorrow. in fact that's one of the most popular posts on our website. >> many of the hundreds of new california laws affect you and your family. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen has a look at what 2020 has in store for your kids and their schools. >> reporter: there are new laws that boost education spending, fix up classrooms and further define charter schools. many of the new laws focus on the physical and mental health of children. older kids will be snoozing for joy. a new law to be fazed in the next three years means california high schools will not be allowed to start earlier than 8:30 a.m., and middle schools will start no earlier than 8:00 a.m. advocates for the new law say later start times will help combat sleep deprivation and improve student achievement.

world schools will be exempt from that law. another law requires all employees dealing with food preparation be trained and certified in food allergy safety. according to the cdc food allergies affect an estimated 8% of children in the united states or 1 in 13 kids. the bill was introduced following the death of a 13-year-old orinda girl who had a severe reaction to peanuts at a summer camp. another lunch room law will strengthen lunch shaming bans. the new law will require that all children get the same meal even if their family isn't up to date on meal fees. now with all the ongoing concern about the safety of youth football that has led to a major dip in participation, a new law limits full contact to two practices per week this law was actually a victory for football advocates lobbying against an outright ban on youth tackle football. now we have a complete list of all of california's new laws for 2020. you can check it out on our website, abc7news.com. we hope you have a very happy

new year. for abc 7 i'm kate larson, back to you. >> thanks, kate. a few high clouds spilling over this dome. we'll call it sunny. a few high clouds from time to time. temperatures are cold this morning. they're much colder than we were dropping off into the 40s. we'll see some upper 30s before the sun comes up after 7:15. and then we'll begin a recovery but check out the upper elevation winds, now ty're even stronger out of the northeast, mt. diablo gusts of 51 miles an hour. 25-mile-an-hour wind gusts from mt. hood to mt. tam. calmer and cooler. a huge swell making its way down to the northern and central california coast. these have doubled overnight. so from 1:00 this afternoon through tomorrow our beach hazard statement. a lot of people will be at the coast. i've seen the exits for the

here are 7 things to know this morning. number one, president trump is blaming iran for an attack on a u.s. embassy in iran. dozens of people broke in this morning after air strikes by the u.s. last week killed 25 people. number two, san ramon police are looking for a brazen crew of house burglars that hit six homes on saturday night. in all of the cases police say the crews smashed a window connected to a door and were looking for jewelry and cash. number three, thousands of people will ring in the new year tonight here in san francisco. final preparations are under way. officers will be deployed throughout the city especially along the embarcadero and the mission. number four, it's officially 2020 in sydney, australia. check out these fireworks. they went off despite calls for the celebration to be canceled because of the wildfires burning in the country. number five, use caution if you're heading to the coast today and tomorrow. the waves will really get strong and dangerous.

number six, check out the golden gate bridge looking rather empty this morning. people stay home and enjoy this day off for the holiday. beach blanket babylon will hold its final performances tonight after a 45-year run, the longest running musical review in the world with more than 17,000 shows. it is amazing. and starting today you can expect extra officers on the roads for the new year's holiday. chp's maximum enforcement period begins at 6:00 tonight and ends at midnight on january 1st. officers will be looking out for people driving drunk or high. just last week during its christmas enforcement the highway patrol says ten people were killed and 271 people were arrested on suspicion of dui. mothers against drunk driving is also getting the word out to make sure you get a safe ride home. they are throwing their support behind an anti-dui technology. a current state bill would expand the use of devices known

as ignition interlocks here in california. the tech requires a driver to blow into an onboard breathalyzer in order to start the car. one madd member believes the interlocks are the most direct way to attack the problem. >> it protects all californians regardless of race, religion, or gender. ignition interlock devices work. when installed they work 100% of the time. they are a game changer in the fight to stop the revolving door of repeat dui offenders. >> the bill would require even first-time dui offenders to install the device to be able to drive again. different airlines have different policies regarding passengers traveling with pets. after an experience at oakland international airport one man thinks airlines should notify passengers ahead of time if an animal will be onboard. last week a passenger was on a flight from oakland to seattle.

while the plane was still at the gate another passenger had an asthma attack as she sat next to someone with a dog. >> as i was boarding i noticed a woman was breathing uneasily. i was concerned for this woman. >> the flight was delayed while the woman was evaluated by medics. she did return to the plane. alaska sent us a statement saying, quote, if a passenger is allergic to pets our policy is to move the pet and its owner to the back of the aircraft which is what happened in this case. and the end of an era in oakland. >> yes, the raiders cleaned out their lockers at the team's headquarters in alameda and fans, of course, showed up to say good-bye. >> i wanted to say my last good-bye for their time in oakland. >> bittersweet but i'll still be a fan. >> and the question is why. >> it was just the vibe. the raiders lost to the broncos in the final game of the season. it's not clear how long the headquarters will stay in

reduced service. it happened yesterday. same thing today. bart brt h.a.r.t. has 22 trains. no ace 1 or ace 7 because of new year's eve. kumasi and liz? all right. colorado towns are on edge after multiple reports of drones with six-foot wing spans in night skies. so look at this video. you can barely make them out. these tiny specks of flickering light. last week local sheriffs started hearing from residents about up to 30 drones crisscrossing the night sky. the first sightings were in northeastern colorado and in nebraska and now officials in three more counties are getting calls from residents who are just baffled by this. the man who shot the footage says he just wants to know what's going on. >> it's a little frightening. i'm more worried about what they're doing and why they won't tell us than them actually flying around. >> drones that fly at night require faa approval, so the agency behind the flight can warn other pilots. the air force says the drones are not theirs.

experts say they likely belong to a private company that's mapping power grids or pipelines. >> okay, so not aliens. >> unfortunately, no aliens. >> the story can't keep going. >> it's done. the hero parishioner who stopped the gunman in a texas church. >> kenneth mouton has those details. >> reporter: the man hailed as a hero for taking down the gunman at west freeway church of christ speaking out. >> only took less than six seconds, but at the same time that's a long six seconds. >> reporter: a shooting inside the church near ft. worth, texas, leaving two dead. this video from the church's live stream capturing the incident. it shows the gunman drawing his weapon during sunday morning service. for six seconds chaos before jack wilson returns fire striking down the shooter. >> i don't feel like i'm a hero.

no, at the surface it's not. upper elevation winds and that's where the gusty winds will stay. we have cold temperatures due to the clear sky and the light winds at the surface. numbers dropping into the upper 30s, mountain view and fremont, elsewhere in the 40s. later on today we've got some high clouds. but upper 50s and low 60s. thanks, lisa. some scary moments for people in new york, part of a newly installed wind turbine came crashing to the ground causing a chain reaction in the bronx. >> look at this video. it smashed through an electronic billboard which broke apart. that fell onto the street and onto the cars below. you can see that massive pole lying across this mangled car. the turbine was installed earlier this month but hadn't been activated yet. despite all of this, nobody was hurt. >> wow, a crazy video. a surprise proposal witnessed by the actor playing aladdin. it's super cute. take a look. >> for the last four years you've changed my life.

hey, julian. >> reporter: hey, good morning. it's about that time to say good-bye to 2019, say hello to 2020 and a new decade, and we expect thousands of people to come and do exactly that here in downtown right next to the embarcadero, and it will be packing this area and there will be a lot of fire, police officials in hand as well when that happens. the barricades are already here. we saw the porta potties being set up so the final touches are being put in place this morning. the fireworks display will be fired off at the stroke of midnight tonight and will feature a variety of displays from big bangs that will light up the sky to others that will feel like they're directly on top of you. and whether you are coming down to the waterfront or celebrating one of the hundreds of parties happening in sf or across the bay, security will be top of mind. sfpd telling us it's all hands on deck for their officers, so they're prepared for just about anything. >> people are being called back into work and we are going to be patrolling the city on bike, on foot and vehicles.

sierra, post malone and billy porter. the fun begins here at 8:00 p.m. all right. police in the east bay are on the lookout for a brazen crew of house burglars. the rash of rip-offs happened saturday night. >> homes along centennial way and asterbell drive shows three burglars inside of one home. police say the crooks hit six houses in one night. they say this crew is experienced, likely looking for homes that were dark, they appeared to be unoccupied and once they got inside they looked for jewelry and cash. >> in all the cases they either smashed the rear slider or they smashed the window that's connected to a door. >> that's scary because i always thought around this area it was always very safe. i had no idea that it's happening here now. >> police say alarm systems, surveillance cameras and even a big dog are deterrents for thieves. leaving your lights on when you're not home is also a good idea.

president trump is blaming iran for a breach of the u.s. embassy compound in baghdad. he's now calling on iraq to protect the embassy. dozens of people broke in this morning. the iraqi shiite set a reception area on fire leading tear gas and sounds of air fire. last week 25 firefighters were killed and 50 more injured. according to the associated press a man on a loudspeaker told the mob not to enter saying, quote, the message was delivered. at least three people appeared to have difficulty breathing because of the tear gas. we are staying on top of this story and will bring you updates as it comes in. jobina, thank you. a dog that was shot in the yard of his owner's house is back home this morning and on the mend. damian young shared this video of rambo just after he returned home. young says a man on a bicycle shot rambo in the neck when he was barking at their fence sunday night.

worship. this particular church had trained for an active shooter. abc news reporter marcus moore will be live in texas with the latest on "good morning america" at 7:00 a.m. right after abc 7 mornings. the man accused in the hanukkah party attack in new york may be linked to a previous unsolved stabbing of a rabbi. law enforcement sources tell abc news investigators are trying to figure out if grafton thomas is somehow connected to the crime in the same area last month. this morning he is facing hate crime charges, accused of wounding five people. investigators say thomas had handwritten journals containing anti-semitic references. his family says he has a history of mental illness. and this morning our ongoing commitment to help build a better bay area takes us to a cleanup effort in concord. >> it's an issue when it comes to tackling homelessness. abc 7 was out as crews cleaned up the park and ride. neighbors have been complaining about the mess for a while now saying there's a homeless encampment, garbage and illegal

some transit fares around the bay area are going up starting tomorrow. there will be a 5.4% inflation based fare increase on b.a.r.t. and those happen every other year. short trips like those within san francisco or from downtown berkeley to 19th street in oakland will go up 10 cents each way. longer trips will increase by 40 cents and still that 50 cent surcharge if you're using a paper ticket. on the peninsula samtrans is making changes while one adult oneway fare will stay at others will increase to $4.50. no charge when you use your clipper card or mobile app. the transit agency will stop selling bulk metal tokens but you can still use them until the end of the year so use them today if you have them. we put together a list to give you a full look at the upcoming changes in the new year from pricing to scheduling.
