stop a thief who took his laptop and is in critical condition. >> this time of crime is all too common. people in a coffee shop when thieves come in and just take them. >> this time with dire consequences. it happened in oakland hills. we're this live. >> i just got bad news from oakland police. they confirmed the man you described the victim in this laptop case did pass away this afternoon. at the hospital. from injuries. witnesses describe him as being younger in his 20s or 30s. police are not identifying him. he was working on his laptop at a seat near a window. one possibly two suspects came in and stole his laptop. >> a quiet new years eve. took a tragic turn.

>> when a suspect approach took the laptop. the victim chased the suspects. right around the corner here. >> police will not confirm what happened next. but witnesses say the man approached the get away car and may have grabbed a door handle. the car accelerated. slamming his head into a parked car. >> i see just the body lying under on the street. >> she runs the flrist and was dopely disturbed. >> he was bleeding from the head. and his face was purple. blue. and somebody tried to do the first aid. the cpr to help. >> oakland fire department personnel witnessed the crime and immediately rendered first aid. the suspect or suspects got away. police are analyzing video from many of the surveillance cameras

mounted throughout the business district. and if not yet released a vehicle description. >> there's a lot of car burglaries. and the sports store was burglarized. i hear people are i'm becoming scared to come here. >> standing out here on the streets for the last few hours i can't tell you hold up people have come up and described crimes and burglaries. break ins to cars. laptop theft. and a robbery over here at the safe way store. so people say a lot is happening here. worried about they want a bigger stronger police presence here. and i just told you the victim who had his laptop stolen did succumb to injuries. >> awful. >> more on the brazen theft at the sporting goods. that happened last friday.

down the street. man rushed in and grabbed ski jackets worth $5,000. crime is over the top in the area. >> the crime and what's going on in the city and community has to stop. there's not a day that goes by that we don't hear of car break ins. of purse snatches. theft in the store. when will it be our turn as taxpayers to say let's get protection over here. >> there are security cameras on the street and got a good description of the car and license plate. the suspect doesn't match the description of the suspect in the laptop theft. >> one day after we reported on alaska airlines and a passenger with a reaction to a dog on a flight. another resident reached out with similar story. we heard from alaska about the policy regarding moving passengers in the cabben. we have the story only.

maybe henry high clouds. increasing the presence. you can see we have mainly clear skies in the forecast animation shows later in the evening by 10:00 or so. even more high clouds becoming more prominent over the north bay. and clouds offshore. 11:00 the high clouds move further south. even at midnight most of the bay area apart from the north bay. will be under clear skies. viewing conditions should be quite nice. all across the bay area. temperatures will be generally in the upper 40s. cool but probably worth it. >> nice. there are certainly lots of food traditions. >> ham. >> could be greens or grapes or prime rib. a look at bay area menus designed to bring luck and happy new year. >> decoding food labels.

current temperature readings around the bay area. low 60s redwood city. still mild in most locations. 47 gilroy. skies are mainly blue. north from the golden gate. 55 in fair field. livermore 54. 57 concord. here's a view of the after glow of sunset west from the east bay hills. and these are forecast features. a few high clouds in the bay area sky. a dry mild start. expected tomorrow to 2020. and there's a slight chance of rain over the weekend. mainly a north bay event. if it materializes. we have a beach hazard statement in effect. for bay area beaches wave heights elevated expected to continue getting higher. danger of dangerous rip current and sneaker waves. these are expected to get higher the surf will get rougher.

by after this beach hazard statement expires tomorrow morning it will be replaced by advisory. i effect until thursday morning. starting at 7:00 p.m. the high clouds will be passing through. we'll get a period of clearing in the midevening hours. later in the evening we approach midnight and the expectation of fire works. we'll see high clouds passing through. shouldn't obscure the view. at midnight this is the picture we expect to see. high clouds over much of the bay area. thin high clouds. we should have nice viewing conditions. before the low clouds move in during the over night hours. over night lows will be mainly in the low to mid-40s. tomorrow high temperatures will generally be around just above 60 degrees near the coast and bay. here's the 7-day forecast. we'll have a couple of bright and fairly mild days on thursday and friday. it gets cooler over the weekend.

nasty winter storm made travel dangerous in the midwest. indiana state police tweeted the picture of this. look at that. the driver lost control and slammed into the barrier. that broke free the trucks cab. the driver was able to get out climbing out of the windshield. >> cars flipped and trucks jackknifed on icy minnesota roads. some of the many crashes on slick interstates. the state patrol says statewide 310 crashes reported yesterday. a video shows a trooper just
