london welcomed 2020 two hours ago with a spectacular fireworks display. you might be able to hear big ben's chimes in the background. the pyrotechnics were billed as the best ever. and it sure looks like they were. >> auckland, new zealand was among the first to ring in the new year. celebrations happened in sydney and north korea while most of us were just waking up. let's take a live look over the embarcadero. crowds are going to gather there to watch fireworks over the bay. that's not the only place you can get a good view. >> liz pena is live with the top seven place to watch the fireworks tonight. >> reporter: we're only hours away from ringing the new year here in san francisco and throughout the day i've been giving you bits and piece of those seven top places and here is my top list. a lit up san francisco sky,

nothing like it. we're on a mission today to find the best places to view the fireworks here in san francisco tonight. let's see what the locals recommend. tiburon. >> sausalito and probably down by the marina. >> reporter: let's get going. we did a lot of driving today. our first stop, koi tower. don't drive. public transit is your friend. and this is another way to enjoy it on a boat. that's one of our biggest days here at hornblower. a ticket to enjoy the four-hour night cruise and a meal starts around at around $200, depending on the boat. this is a little distance from the fireworks but you get a view of the bay. wow, this is the 15th floor of

the end of a san francisco tradition. "beach blanket babylon." the musical has had a 45-year run with more than 17,000 shows, but it's coming to an end. lauren martinez is live from the theater in san francisco with the story. lauren? >> reporter: dan, there's a long line of people already anxiously waiting to get inside to see one of the last of the shows. this over the top musical and comedy show that's been running in san francisco for decades. the show debuted in 1974, making it the longest-running musical revue in the world. it is known for gigantic wigs, spoofs on pop culture and politics. producer joe silver made the announcement to end back in april. it takes a lot to put on a production like this and the time has come to call it quits. fans say it is an end to an era and are sad to see it go. >> i'll miss everything about

recent wildfires and rising cost. hayward ranch has been open since 1948, but the owner is ill and has decided not to run the restaurant anymore. the building is also up for sale. hayward ranch is open until 10:00 this evening. today is the last day of service for one of the major airport transportation companies, super shuttle. they started in l.a.x. in 1983. super shuttle has been plagued by competition from uber and lyft. rideshare companies are about to face a new law. it treats freelancers as employees entitled to benefits. uber and the california trucking association are suing to stop it, calling the new law unconstitutional. lyanne melendez joins us live to explain the impact this is having across the board. >> reporter: we spent the day talking to people who either support or outright hate ab 5. this is one of those laws that

will be challenged in the courts for a long time. this is an independent truck driver who makes a good living. enough he says to pay for lihis own benefits. he often works for several companies in a week. >> i got a good check. i pay for my house. >> reporter: but he and others would be loyal to only one company. >> my flexibility is gone. i can't choose where i want to go, when i want to go and the money i want to make. >> reporter: that's why the california trucking association filed a motion for a temporary restraining order to stop ab 5 from going into effect while other lawsuits are settled. the owner of the oakland hills tennis club told us in the past, as independent workers, tennis instructors have been able to pocket 090% of what they charge. the other 10% goes to the club.

new at 6:00, dash cam video has been released showing a car, look at this, going off of cliff in san mateo county. it happened so fast of course we have slowed down the video. it appeared to miss a turn and went over the ridge at gray whale cove. authorities spent all day yesterday looking for the car and whoever may have been inside. some car parts were found in the water, but it's not clear if they actually came from this vehicle. 7 on your side has been closely following a law suit involving fast track. >> it claims toll authorities wrongly charged penalties to thousands of california drivers. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here today with your update. >> this class action lawsuit will move forward. that's the big news. the san francisco judge refused today to disqualify the legal team representing the drivers behind the lawsuit, which would have thrown out the case. the fast track claims, pardon

me, the class action claims they unfairly charged toll evasion penalties to motorists crossing the golden gate bridge. many never received toll invoices and penalties piled up. sometimes into the thousands of dollars. the agency that runs fast track tried to get the class action legal team thrown out, saying the lawyers improperly interviewed a former fast track employee. the class action lawyers say three did nothing wrong and accuse fast track of simply using delay tactics to try to get the case thrown out. the judge's ruling finds the class action attorneys were within their rights to interview the witness. the trial is scheduled to begin thursday. that is the day before the statute of limitations runs out. >> really? >> wow. >> barely under the wire. >> no kidding. >> we'll keep following it. a man chasing down the thief who stole his laptop from a starbucks this morning sadly has died from his injuries. it's a tragic end to a crime

that's become all too common in the bay area. leslie brinkley is live from oakland's mont claire village with the story. leslie? >> reporter: this amounts to, dan, a 75th murder in oakland this year so far. what happened from what witnesses describe is the death of a 20 to 30 year old man who basically died while he tried to chase down the suspect or suspects who stole his laptop computer from a starbucks right here behind me. the quiet morning in the upscale mont claire neighborhood of oakland. a man worked on his laptop near a window when one or two suspects snatched his computer and ran outside to a get away car. >> when a suspect approached they snatched the laptop. >> reporter: police will not confirm what happened next. but witnesses say the man approached the get away car and may have grabbed the door handle in an effort to get the laptop

back. the car accelerated, slamming his body into a parked car. >> i see the body lying on the street. >> reporter: maria chen runs the florist across the street as was deeply disturbed. >> he was bleeding from the head, and his face was completely purple, blue. and fortunately, somebody tried to do the first aid, you know, the crb to help him. >> reporter: police say fire department personnel witnessed some of the crime and immediately rendered first aid. the suspect or suspects got away. police are analyzing video from many of the surveillance cameras mounted throughout this business district. and have not yet released a vehicle description. >> there's a lot of, the sports store was burglarized. i'm becoming scared to come here. >> are these individuals

connected with any other crimes? whether it's robberies or thefts or any type of electronic devices. >> reporter: the man's family is being notified as police told us just a short while ago. he did succumb to injuries, severe trauma to his head, as he tried to chase down the suspects who stole his laptop. police are asking for the public's help. anyone who might have taken a cell phone video, a photo of some kind, they want to get those photos and add that to the surveillance video they're now analyzing, to try to find the suspects who did this. reporting live in mont claire, lslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> let's hope they do that soon. san jose firefighter also to rescue one of their own on 16th street. while fighting the fire, a firefighter fell through aln exterior door to the basement. >> the firefighter was rapidly

extricated from the basement and is now at a local hospital. >> several people were displaced by the fire as well as a pit bull who was in the back yard. the fire is under investigation. one day after we reported an alaska airlines passenger had an allergic reaction to a dog on a flight, another viewer reached out with a similar story. we have a story you will see only on abc 7 news. >> reporter: a union city woman flying from san jose to new york city had to give up her premium aisle seat last night after a passenger with a cat sat down >> she felt that tingling, and her eyes started swelling up a little bit. >> reporter: the woman's father contacted abc 7 news after seeing our report about another woman who had had an as asthma attack on a flight from oakland to seattle.

abc 7 news was told if a passenger is allergic to pets the policy is to move the pet and passenger to the back of the airplane, but in this case t , was the person with the allergy who was moved. >> it was faulty for alaska airlines to say here's $160, which doesn't cover the ticket. >> reporter: alaska airlines says after speaking with our customer advocacy expert i confirmed that i did misstate our policy yesterday. our policy is to separate the two parties. though at times it may seem unfair, our crew's number one priority is to care for our customer having a medical reaction as quickly as possible. >> they need to be cog any sapts of people's allergies. >> reporter: louie flew and its owner agreed passengers should be alerted ahead of time.

low 50s at concord and livermore. and finally, the view from the east bay hills camera, nice, clear view. so it's looking promising for the fireworks. we'll have a few high clouds for new year's eve, a dry, mild start tomorrow to 2020, and a slight chance of rain coming our way over the weekend. we still have rough surf by the way. beach hazard statement is in effect until 9:00 tomorrow morning. the wave heights are rising. there's a danger of rip currents and sneaker waves. these are expected to continue rising. this statement will be likely replaced tomorrow morning by a high surf advisory. now let's take a look at the forecast animation, starting at 7:00 this evening. we'll see the passage of a few high clouds. and later around 11:00 or so as we're getting ready for the fireworks we'll see more high clouds. but according to computer models, they're likely to push on out by midnight.
