lauren martinez. >> where people are anxiously waiting for the big fireworks show to start just an hour from now. >> you know, there's so many options on where to celebrate new year's eve. you can't go wrong with a free fireworks show. we talked to people from all over the world that have chosen to enter the new decade here in san francisco. people along san francisco's embarcadero are ready to celebrate 2020. >> coming from the big city of lights, all the energy. >> reporter: there's high energy to ring in the new year. some came for the annual fireworks show above the bay. others were on their way to party. >> there's a boat. they're doing a speakeasy themed new year's eve party. so it said dressing up was optional but we don't do anything without doing it so -- >> reporter: 200,000 people are

expected to celebrate along san francisco's waterfront. a motorcade of first responders and a muny bus full of medical equipment made their way down embarcadero before street closures in case of emergencies. overall people are enjoying the sight wheres, the smells and everything else the embarcadero offers. >> looking forward to 2020 now. >> reporter: we asked this couple from australia what they're hoping the new year will bring. >> engagement. >> reporter: whatever is ahead in 2020 the city's final moments in 2019 is full of smiles. >> happy new year! >> reporter: now fireworks kick off at the stroke of midnight. they say for the best viewing you can go south of the ferry building around pier 14, but of course there's so many areas in the city where you can get a good glimpse. the show should be around 15

minutes. luren martinez, abc 7 news. >> lauren, thanks very much. so it is clear out there we think and it's certainly dry. will they be able to see the firework s firewo fireworks. skies look pretty clear tonight, that's a good sign but let's get a definitive answer. >> i remember somebody saying it 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 p.m. it being clear tonight. here's a look at live doppler 7, mainly clear skies around the bay area right now. and as we approach midnight or midnight approaches us let's take a look at our time line here. midnight tonight we expect still mainly clear skies, just a few thin high clouds. no problem at all viewing the fireworks around the bay area. but notice how quickly in the wee hours of the morning clouds will gather over the bay area but some of us will be asleep out there and others will be trying to find the way home.

>> yes, we will. spencer, thank you very much. >> in the south bay crowds are braving the cold for festive and of course fireworks. >> amanda live at great america with a look at the celebration there. >> the cold isn't stopping anyone. we caught the fireworks spectacular at 9:00 p.m. and still thousands are out here waiting on that midnight count down. counting down a california's great america. the theme park was decked out for new year's eve. 11 minutes of pyrotechnics at 9:00 to match the east coast count down. bright, booming firework, a display bigger than last year's with varying favorites. >> the one that goes like a water fall. >> the ones that kind of go down. >> the last is always the best. >> reporter: great america

delivered sending fireworks into the night sky. for the midnight crowd a confetti count down. the celebration even brought snow to the south bay leaving the smallest visitors with lasting memories. people of all ages, california's great america giving many a sense of nostalgia. >> my father helped build this place, and now my daughter is working here. >> reporter: and on new year's eve a sense of hope. >> making new friends and experiencing life. >> my birthday. >> reporter: when's your birthday? >> january 4th. >> i'm graduating my elementary school this year so i'm excited for that. >> reporter: everyone ready to end 2019 with a bang. so the party wraps up around

is not known. police say officers found the victims just before 9:45, abouten hour and 15 minutes ago. so far no arrests have been made, and there was no word on any suspects identified or arrested. new developments on the man accused of stabbing to death 18-year-old -- the lawyer has filed a motion to move the trial out of alameda county. she says she doesn't think he can get a fair trail because of the coverage it's drawn. his mental competency has also been questioned. a man lost his life in oakland while trying to stop a laptop thief. >> that story and more in tonight's headlines. >> a man chasing down the thief who stole his laptop in a starbucks this morning sadly has died from his injuries. >> a man worked on his laptop at this starbucks near a window when one or two suspects snatched his computer and ran

outside to a get away car. but witnesses say the man approached a get away car and may have grabbed a door handle in an effort to get his laptop back. the car accelerated they say slamming his head into a parked car. san jose firefighters had to rescue one of their own during a house fire on 16th street this afternoon. while fighting the fire a firefighter fell through an exterior door into the basement. he quickly got out with nonlife threatening injuries. footage showing a car going off a cliff in san mateo county. it happened so fast so we can show you the vehicle appeared to miss a turn and went over the edge. authorities spent all day yesterday looking for the car. some car parts were found in the water but it's not clear if they actually came from this vehicle. the headlines tonight in the north bay twice now thieves have hit a nationally recognized home holiday display in nevato.

the home is still beaming with holiday spirit as you can see inside and out with good reason. it's so famous this year it won first place on abc's great christmas light fight. the family says they welcome about 3,000 people inside their home to take a look. but last night they found a small nativity scene gone. it was a treasured family heirloom. >> really sad. i don't understand. we're still going to open our doors because we're not going to make one person, you know, ruin it for thousands of people. >> great attitude about this. someone swiped a couple of cellphones two weeks ago. that was the first time in 28 years anything was taken during the holiday display open house. monster waves are slamming the bay area. see why officials are saying stay out of the water. it's going to get a lot easier in the new year to file your taxes for free online. we'll explain how. a final curtain call.

though in the wee hours of the morning when many of us will just be starting our day. and tomorrow's highs will generally be right around 60 degrees on the coast and bit milder around the bay and inland. forecast thursday morning shows a few clouds sweeping through but dry conditions through most of the day thursday and friday. but friday evening some light rain developing in the north bay. a few drops aural saturday morning and a dry weekend coming our way. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. as you can see we've got seven mainly dry days ahead with the exception of that slight chance of some light rainfall in the north bay on saturday. so 2020 is looking pretty good so far. bring it on. >> absolutely. nice way to start. bringing smiles to some very special kids.
