who shot two men in san francisco and one of the victims is in life threatening condition right now. the shooting happened near franklin and bay streets after 9:30 last night. it's not clear what led up to the shooting. the second victim is expected to recover. petaluma police have one man in custody after a new year's eve shooting. officers got called to the scene around 5:00 yesterday evening. they say they found the suspect and the victim at the scene. medics took the victim to the hospital. it's not clear how he's doing. both men live in this apartment complex. it's not clear how they know each other. a san francisco restaurant had to close early because of a kitchen fire. flames broke out on spear street around 7:00 last night. the restaurant and the high rise was forced to evacuate briefly. the fire was contained a short time later. no one was hurt. the cast of beach blanket babylon took their final bow.

the show wrapped up 45 years of costumes, wigs last night and one of the final shows ended with a salute to san francisco. last night's audience enjoyed the performers in belting out san francisco. the beach blanket babylon started in 1974 and it gained a lot of fame for pop culture,cul, celebrities, and politicians. governor newsom jointed last night. >> did they spoof you at all? >> no, thank god. those days are over. that's even better. >> producer joe silver decided to end the review back in april, 6.5 million people saw beach blanket babylon in person. >> all right. well, this is a new year.

news in baghdad. the u.s. embassy is under siege again this morning. angry protesters threw rocks at the embassy and set fire to the american flag. the protests started in retaliation for deadly u.s. air strikes that targeted an iranian backed militia group. here's ines de la cuetara with the latest. >> reporter: this morning fresh protests outside the american embassy in iraq. more than 100 marines have arrived to enforce security. mark esper announced an infantry battalion of 750 soldiers has been authorized to report to the middle east immediately after hundreds of protests attempted to storm the embassy on tuesday. shiite militia groups chanting death to america and setting a security checkpoint on fire prompting tear gas and gunshots. the chaos began after weekend

air strikes by the u.s. reportedly killed 25 members of an iranian-backed militia group. those air strikes in retaliation for an attack in northern iraq that killed a u.s. contractor. president trump accusing iran of orchestrating the attack and calling on iraq to protect the embassy. but iran has a tight grip over baghdad's government. iraqi security services allowing militia members to flood this diplomatic area normally off-limits. iraqi forces eventually arriving pushing protesters back. >> i think it's been handled very well. the marines came in. as soon as we saw there was a potential for problem, they got in, and there was no problem whatsoever. >> reporter: and according to a state department spokesperson, there are currently no plans to evacuate the embassy. ines de la cuetara, abc news, washington. > . this is new dash cam video showing a car just going over a

cliff in san mateo county. it happened to fast we had to slow this vehicle down so you could see it. the vehicle appears to mission a turn and go over the edge. authorities spent all day monday looking for the car and whoever may have been inside. they found some car parts in the water, it's not clear if they came from this vehicle. we have new proof of just how powerful the ocean is. check this out. this video shows a monster wave sweeping a man off of a cliff. this was at bonnie dune beach in santa cruz county. the man is circled in white there in this video. cal fire and california state park rangers were able to save him. we are expecting some dangerous surf here in the bay area today. wow. that's insane. >> that's crazy. and to think he was fine? >> mm-hmm. >> powerful out there. that high surf advisory lasting throughout the morning hours. certainly take care. even though the surf will continue to subside throughout

mid 50s by 11:00. cupertino 60 degrees later this afternoon. headed to the north bay for santa rosa, sebastopol, san rafael, look at upper 40s. by 11:00, mid 50s. we're in the low 60s by 6:00. now, we still need some rain out there. in fact, anywhere from about 40 to 90% of average. as we continue this dry trend into 2020, we'll keep the peninsula dry. looks like the next chance of rain coming our way not until late in the weekend it could be confined to the north bay. a north bay family is rethinking their public holiday display after a thief stole a priceless possession. the family gets thousands of visitors every night after they were featured on "the great christmas light fight." wayne freedman shows us what happened. >> reporter: it began with one lone santa. who could have known that so many years later he would have such progeny. >> can you believe it? >> reporter: it's rhetorical question that friends, neighbors and tourists now ask when they see the spectacle every

going through the afternoon, still looking at cloud cover. looking at your thursday, sunnier conditions. coming into the city, count on the cloud cover, mid 50s 10:00. upper 50s later on this afternoon but dry. >> thanks. the new year means the minimum wage is going up for a lot of workers. this is a live look at mcdonald's in sunnyvale where one of the biggest increases is happening. the minimum wage goes up to $12 an hour but many are getting a bigger boost. oakland's minimum wage is $14 an hour. it's $15.40 in santa clara and 16.05 in sunnyvale. rideshare companies are facing a new law today. 85 treats freelancers as employees entitled to benefits. uber and the california trucking association are suing trying to stop this calling this new law unconstitutional. leann melendez explains the impact. >> reporter: this man is an independent truck driver who

makes a good living, enough, he says to pay for his own benefits. he often works for several companies in a week. >> i got a good check. i pay for my house. >> reporter: but he and others would be loyal to only one company. >> my flexibility is gone. i can't choose where i want to go, when i want to go and the money i want to make. >> reporter: that's why the california trucking association filed a motion for a temporary restraining order to stop ab 5 from going into effect while other lawsuits are settled. the owner of the oakland hills tennis club told us in the past, as independent workers, tennis instructors have been able to pocket 90% of what they charge. the extra 10% goes to the club. now by becoming permanent employees, they will be earning less because now the tennis club has to pay for all their benefits. >> that's dropping to either 50% or 60% as an employee.

continued at the lucille packard children's hospital in palo alto. they had a visit from one of the greatest baseball players in history. giants legend willie mays stopped by yesterday to sign autographs. many of the children are dealing with cancer and neurological disorders. bay area physicians have important new years resolutions for families who have not brought their children in for flu shots yet. this doctor said this year's flu season started earlier than in past years, and children can still benefit from getting vaccinated. >> getting the flu shot protects you, protects your children, protects other peoples children. even if you get the flu, with a flu shot you will get a shorter course of it and it may not be as severe. getting the flu shot is important. >> he says there are four formulations that are available this year including a mist.

welcomed 2020 along san francisco's embarcadero. i was one of them. it was so beautiful. this was the big fireworks show at san francisco at midnight it lasted about 15 minutes in total. now we're talking about cleaning up, especially at times square. this is a live look at new york city. fireworks burst and confetti fell as 1 million people celebrated the start of 2020. kenneth moton has a look. >> three, two, one -- >> happy new year! >> overflignight millions of pe gathering in times square to ring in the new year and watch the famous ball drop. thousands of officers were patrolling new york city keeping the crowd safe with heavy weapons teams.

area going up here for the new year. reporting live in fremont, julian glover, abc7 news. >> we have a breakdown of what you'll be paying when you go back to work. you can find that at abc7news.com. in the south bay, a 37-year-old man is under arrest accused of setting up cameras inside of a bathroom at starbucks. this man, sean evans, was taken into custody on suspicion of invasion of privacy and drug related offenses. these cameras were found at the starbucks on hillsdale avenue yesterday. one was attached to a drain pipe in front of a toilet. officers discovered a second camera under a sink. police found evans in a parked vehicle with evidence linking him to the cameras inside. police are searching for one laptophief in oakland's montclair neighborhood after a man died trying to retrieve it. the victim was working onnnn

laptop at this starbucks when one or two suspects snatched his computer and ranne o o get getaway car. >> the victim chased the suspects. >> police are not confirming what happened next but witnesses say the man approached the getaway car and grabbed the door handle. the car accelerated and they slammed his head into a parked car. the suspect or the suspects got away. now police are analyzing video from many of those surveillance cameras mounted around the business district. they have not released a vehicle description. there was a brazen theft at montclair sporting goods. a man rushed in, grabbed some ski jackets that were worth $5,000.

the crime, what's going on in this city and this community is at a breaking spot that has to stop. there's not a day that goes by that we don't hear of car break-ins, purse snatching. thefts in the store. when is it our turn to say let's get some protection over here? >> the security cameras on the street got a good description of the suspect's car and the license plate. the robber's description in this case does not match the one in that laptop theft case. concord police released this video showing a thief stealing a phone at an ice cream shop. it happened a few weeks ago at cream on salveo street. two young men approached a woman in a shop. one asked for 50 cents. the other grabbed the phone and took off. a san jose firefighter is expected to recover after a

held in oakland to mark the 11th anniversary of the death of oscar grant. a b.a.r.t. officer shot and killed the 22-year-old hayward man on new year's day back in 2009. form the former b.a.r.t. officer said he meant to use his taser to subdue grant and not his service revolver. he was sentenced to two years in prison and was released in 2011. new developments with the man accused of stabbing to death 18-year-old nia wilson at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. the lawyer for john lee cowan has filed a motion to move the trial out of alameda county. cowl's mental competency has also been questioned. the next hearing will be january 15th. new this morning, it's legal to buy recreational cannabis in

thanks. in the south bay, crowds braved the cold for festive lights, family fun and of course fireworks. amanda has a look at the new year celebration. >> reporter: counting down at california's great america. the theme park was decked out for new year's eve. 11 minutes of pyrotechnics at 9:00 to match the east coast count down. bright, booming firework, a display bigger than last year's with varying favorites. >> the one that goes like a waterfall. >> the ones that kind of go down. >> the last is always the best. >> reporter: great america delivered sending fireworks into the night sky. for the midnight crowd a confetti count down. the celebration even brought snow to the south bay leaving the smallest visitors with lasting memories. >> it brings a lot of joy to
