>> okay, diane, thanks so much. we have your guide to 2020. everything you need to know as we start the new year from politics to your wallet and even some sports but first, we are going to begin with this crucial moment for our country. president trump heads into this new year as only the third president ever to be impeached and he is anxious to get his trial in the senate under way. let's bring in our powerhouse political team, mary bruce and jon karl. happy new year to you both. >> happy new year. >> happy new year, cecilia. >> i'll ask you to get your crystal balls out and bring us to the trial in the senate. a lot want to know is the outcome predetermined? what's going to happen? >> well, it certainly does seem highly unlikely the president will be removed from office but the big x factor, how do we get to that point? what does this process look like? we know speaker pelosi took a bit of a risk before we closed out for the holiday saying she's not going to be sending over those articles of impeachment to

the senate for consideration. we're in a bit of impeachment purgatory right now. she wants to see what the trial will look like when they come back and gavel back into session and they're essentially at an impasse. democrats want to hear from these key witnesses. the president said he wants top aides to testify. democrats are calling the president's bluff. but republicans, they want a quick trial. they don't want any witnesses and, you know, mitch mcconnell said, hey, if speaker pelosi doesn't want a trial in the senate that's fine by me. >> and the one thing donald trump wants out of this, he wants to have a trial because he wants to be able to point to the senate and say that he was exonerated. this is vindication because he looks at this as most people do and say there's no way that he gets removed from office and, you know, it's probably less than a majority. it takes two-thirds to remove him from office. you won't get anywhere near that.

you might not even get all the democrats. he actually wants to see this trial. >> and so basically the one thing we know is certain we're going to see a fair amount of jockeying, a fair amount of in-fighting and it will get pretty nasty. >> so hanging over this impeachment is this other thing where we will deal with in 2020. it's the 2020 presidential election is out there on the horizon. when is this democratic field going to start to shrink? >> well, i mean it's already shrunk a little bit, cecilia. we started out with 476 candidates and now at somewhere over a dozen roughly, roughly. you know, look, we're going to be voting soon. we have the iowa caucuses on february 3rd. eight days later, the new hampshire primary. an abc debate somewhere in the middle there in new hampshire. and the field was doing a good job of winnowing and then -- >> we're adding now. going to take one away. >> yeah. we got to add a billionaire, add

a former governor of massachusetts. but, look, it's now, you know, after a primary campaign that seems like it's already been going on for several years, we get down to the voters actually having a say. >> and it does seem like there's still a ton of wiggle room out there, though, from the polling we have seen so even though we'll start seeing a lot of voting lapping soon that doesn't mean this seemingly ever growing field is really going to start narrowing. you could have several more months before we get clarity. >> what you're saying 2020 is going to be as relaxing and zen as 2019 for us on the political beat. >> pretty much. >> happy new year. i wish you amazing 2020. thank you very much. lara, over to you talking money. we're going to kick off a focus on how you can have a debt-free decade and get back those finances, get them in shape. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is here now to help us with that and i love how

you've broken this down simply. what type of goals should we be setting right now for 2020? >> the whole idea here, lara, and happy new year. >> happy new year. >> is to have a truly happy new year of financial freedom. make 2020 your year and that begins with paying down debt so think about all your goals. if you have debt that is going to eat into every single one of your financial goals. so start there. build an emergency savings, start some short-term investments and think about that nest egg. most are 401(k)s. start think about that. if you're not doing that and not contributing that's leaving money on the table when there is a match from your company. >> i know it seems daunting but you have to start sometime so start throwing it -- you know, just putting a little bit away. it will add up. you ke this great bullet point list and hopefully everybody has jotted those down. number one, pay down debt. it seems so hard. >> yes, it can be so daunting.

>> please give us advice. >> lara, there are two ways that we know people can be effective paying down their debt. one is called the snowball method and with that snowball method you're going to start paying off the smallest debt and then work your way up to the largest debt. you're still making the minimum payments so you're not paying those extra fees. >> but you can cross them off your list. >> exactly. >> i feel psychologically -- >> you psychologically know you're chipping away. the other option and this is the option that will save you the most money if you stick to it, the avalanche method, where you look at your debts from the highest rate down to the lowest and usually the highest will be your credit card debt. you pay off the highest interest rate first and then work your way down. >> okay, i love that. snowball and avalanche. >> both timely. >> final words of wisdom from you because you always give us great advice. >> number one, look at the credit report because someone might have opened a credit in your name over the last year. it's always important, you can

alabama and michigan. how about that? two of the most storied college football programs ever and this is a great game, alabama is a team that's always playing for national championships, first year, though, they're not in the college football playoffs so, what's their motivation? have nfl prospects that will skip the game. one who won't is jerry jeudy and michigan's got a great defense and they're led by shea patterson at quarterback who's had a great season. it's going to be good. >> go blue, roll tide. i knew that. >> you know all about college football. >> outback bowl. >> minnesota and auburn. one of those classic s.e.c. versus big ten bowl games. i love watching minnesota on offense, they're led by tanner morgan at quarterback. he is accurate. throws to an outstanding receiving corps led by tyler johnson, but he's facing off against a good auburn defense led by derick brown who is a game wrecker. he is big, athletic.

physical. he's going to be a top ten pick in the nfl draft this year and will have his eyes set on tanner morgan, watch out. this is going to be a great classic match-up, i think. >> now who is going to be watching the sugar bowl? yeah? okay. [ applause ] >> of course, and the sugar bowl if you're a fan of defensive football and love physical smashmouth football i think you'll love baylor versus georgia. how about the baylor bears, right? two years ago baylor only won one game. now here they are playing in the sugar bowl. their head coach matt rhule has done an outstanding job. their defense, they fly around the football. georgia has a great defense too. a lot of speed and nfl talent. difficult for jake fromm to score points. i don't know if it will be a barn burner, but if you love great defensive football, the sugar bowl is for you. >> we should do rose bowl. >> listen, legendary broadcaster keith jackson called it the

moms on a mission to help those who miss their loved ones. >> they have come up with a special way to help families feel close even when they are thousands of miles apart and our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more on the story. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. every year during this holiday season, in fact, all year long, tens of thousands of service members are deployed around the world. family and friends send loads of gifts and cards to their loved ones but two new york moms have found a unique way to help military families at home and abroad stay connected. it was 2006, the conflicts in iraq and afghanistan were raging. >> never thought i'd be a military mother ever. it's what he always warranted -- wanted and i was if complete denial. >> he went in to the marines right out of high school and, gosh, we tried to talk him out of it. >> reporter: but there was no

stopping vicki and lisa's sons from serving. >> it was terrifying. you know, to be talking to him through skype and all of a sudden he would say got to go. something's happening. click. >> you don't want to have a pity party but on the other it's hard to put a smile on some days. >> reporter: it was christmas during vicki's son's first deployment but he wasn't thinking about his holiday but he was thinking about how lonely it would be for his girlfriend ashley back home so asked his mom to send her a box of presents from him. >> it was when i talked to my son that i realized that the gift went both ways, because i could hear the smile in his voice and he's like, mom, i was able to make ashley so happy. >> reporter: keeping that personal connection despite the miles inspired the marine corps mom to expand the idea and link up with lisa. her soon to be battle buddy. >> once we started getting responses back that's when we realized we were in it for good.

>> and not just christmas? >> mother's day and father's day we did also. >> reporter: their charity, full circle home has now helped more than 21,000 service members send gifts and personal love notes to those they call their heroes back home. >> all right, we got our first box done. >> reporter: the gifts are small, a scented candle, body lotion, a memory bracelet but always meaningful. a reminder their deployed service members are thinking of them and know how hard it can be. >> when you're dealing with a deployment you worry about your soldier and you worry your kids and you worry about everyone else. and then something comes in the mail for you and you go, wow. it was just wonderful. >> it's not just the loved ones of those troops who are deployed. vicki and lisa also deliver gifts to the families and care givers of our service members recovering from wounds at walter reed. great work they're doing.

used those tricks to stay hooked into our new year's resolutions. the tech world knows how to keep you coming back for more. if only our new year's resolutions were as addictive as apps and games. in fact, january 17th has now been dubbed ditch your new year's resolution day. that's how long most of us are able to keep our goals. so let's try to harness some cognitive science tricks to last longer than that. maybe even make a lasting change. first, quantifying the steps to achieving your goal. yes, you want to lose 10 pounds but the scale is not the measurement that will get you there. my fitness pal and weight watchers apps ask you to record every single thing you eat and tie into fitness trackers and give you a sense of how the calories in compare to the calories burned. there's a saying in business, you measure what matters. when you're trying to eat healthy not only does tracking keep you accountable, every time you want to snack, but it also leads to our next trick.

gamification. apps that track your progress along small steps and award you stimulate dopamine hits. as silly as the gold star or closed circles on your watch may be they give you a sense of accomplishment. a virtual high-five. other goals? there are apps that help you track your exercise, set a budget and quit smoking. but many of our resolutions are deeply personal. enter goal setting apps that let you set any objective you want. the app strides have hundreds of options. want to knit more? okay, you can set a goal for that. but the real power is personalization. i coach kids soccer. if i wait until the last minute to plan out practice, it stresses me out and it stresses my assistant coaches out. now i've got reminders, accountability and even a streak tracker built into my phone. one more trick, we are hardwired for the power of social obligations so make resolutions

with friends and then make plans around them. cecilia, you know, we sometimes make dates to go to spin classes and work out. it totally keeps me accountable because how ticked off would you be if i just bailed on you, right? >> i'd be pretty mad because you are my workout partner when we're here in new york together. we have a question for you. so many of us at "gma" want to improve our sleep. do you have any tips for that? >> yeah, the trick to better sleep is a consistent bedtime. now that's easier said than done, so we want to bring in the power of the nudge. a regular poke that refreshes your big picture goal. you can use your phone or your smartwatch to set a nightly alarm saying 9:45 p.m., time for bed. yeah, you might be a little annoyed but it's been proven to work. now, another way to nudge yourself toward goals, write

yourself a message on the lock screen wallpaper for your phone. i pick this thing up an average of 45 times a day so every lock screen view reminds me of my goal which is ironically to use my phone less so, you know, good luck with your resolutions. good morning. i'm kumasi aaron from abc7 mornings. happening today, a vigil will be held in oakland to mark the 11th anniversary in the death of oscar grant. the vigil will be held from noon to 4:00 at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. that's where a b.a.r.t. police officer shot and killed the hayward man back in 2009. the former b.a.r.t. officer said he meant to use his taser to subdue grant and not the service revolver that killed him. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison. he was released in 2011. here's meteorologist lisa argen with our look at the forecast for today. >> kumasi, check it out. pretty shot from mount tam, just a sliver of sunlight there.
