those new year's resolutions. we got fun ways to get in shape. first the morning's top headlines. back over to diane macedo with all the latest. good morning, again, diane. >> thank you, cecilia and happy new year. we're going to start with the big cleanup in times square. the sanitation department is removing tons of trash left behind by the million or so spectators. other workers are dismantling scaffolding and security barriers but it went off without a hitch and some of the biggest stars hit the stage including post malone, bts and paula abdul and a new york city firefighter proposed right on live television. over in paris, thousands lined the arc de triomphe as fireworks marked the beginning of 2020. now to the mounting tensions in the middle east. protesters threw rocks at the u.s. embassy in baghdad today as marines fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. now the white house says it's sending more troops to the region. abc's erielle reshef has the details.

>> reporter: overnight armed forces responding to the unprecedented siege to the u.s. embassy in baghdad. reportedly carried out by a hoa horde of shiite militia. even more troops possibly on the way as soon as this morning. the first warnings issued. two american apache helicopters firing flares over the embassy. crowds storming the compound new year's eve setting fire to guardposts and embassy walls. prying an embassy plaque off the entrance and trying to break through windows. a pane of glass separating guards from protesters. american troops taking up position on the roof of the embassy. firing tear gas at time, the chaos began after funerals for the reportedly 25 militiamen killed in u.s. air strikes sunday. those air strikes in retaliation for an attack in northern iraq that killed a u.s. contractor. president trump weighing in from

mar-a-lago. >> we have some of our greatest warriors there. they got in there very quickly. >> reporter: in a tweet the president directly blaming iran for the assault writing, iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost or damage incurred at any of our facilities. they will pay a very big price. this is not a warning. it is a threat. happy new year. erielle reshef, abc news, new york. >> the death toll is rising from australia's wildfires. three more people have died in new soh wales bringing the known death toll to seven in that state. thousands are starting the new year in shelters or even camping on the beach. the australian navy is using its ships to send supplies to happy new year to you. starting out with cloud cover and patchy fog. temperatures today on the mild side. the new year bringing in dry conditions. next chance of rain looking marginal. and it's going to come in late

atlanta interior design firm. in music news selena gomez kicking off the new year with a rare treat. her first album in four years. it is called "rare." there's the cover. she's calling it the most honest music she's ever made. look for that january 10th. later this year, the dixie chicks will release their first studio album in 13 year. >> 13 years. >> just took a little break. they're back and better than ever. rihanna also coming back in 2020. poison for a supersize north american tour. harry styles hitting the road. taylor swift hitting the road. i'm definitely going to go see harry styles. that guy is so talented. he kicks off his tour in april. taylor is foregoing stadiums in favor of festivals. she's going to headline the glastonbury fest very cal and doing two of her own calling them lover fests right here in the u.s. so that is what's happening in music. i'm filled with information for you today. let's talk love. in the year of seeing clearly, 2020 will be the year that jennifer lopez and alex rodriguez are expected to look into each other's eyes and say "i do." they got engaged in the bahamas there in march 2019. we all remember it well and if jenny from the block's rock is any indication, this will be a big wedding. no word on when they'll do it.

we guess it will after to wait until after february 2nd. that's when she headlines the super bowl halftime show. katy perry and orlando bloom also expected to take the plunge this year. the actor popped the question on valentine's day 2019 during a helicopter ride. >> so bachelor. >> thankfully she accepted the rose. other couple, scarlett johansson andsome's colin jost also emma stone has an "snl" man. there's her guy writer dave makary and england's princess beatrice could give us another royal wedding to look forward to in 2020, everybody. but today they're branching out in roles that were traditionally reserved for men. now, national geographic is highlighting women in the military, their strength, determination and how far we've come. it's the picture that's worth a thousand words. a marine sergeant in training carrying her fellow comrade. >> we didn't care how we looked but can our bodies do this? >> reporter: her photo featured in the november issue of national geographic celebrating today's woman this an ongoing project that includes the issue and the book "women, the national geographic image collection." she's photos demonstrating how far women have come marking their place in history. >> this is a historical document. all about women and it would be such a great opportunity if you look back in 50 years and say, you know, where were we at with women in the military? >> reporter: national geographic veteran photographer lynsey

really good. >> i know, right. so then we're going to add in our collard greens. you can also use spinach if you like. >> show me the money. >> show me all the money in 2020, right? okay, so you got to get that nice and tender, yes, then you start on your eggs and whisk these up. actually you can help me with this. >> whole milk. >> get some nice whole milk. add some of the bacon in there. i think so. we can tag team this and add in some of our cheese because everything is better with cheese too. >> yeah. >> right? >> this looks really good. >> add in all of the vegties we sauteed earlier. >> you'll get that till it's nice, smooth and just totally ready to go into our bake here. yes. so we buttered this up. >> this is something -- i've been doing it lately. a lot more people come to holidays. you can do it the night before or a total day before.

>> i like to just do all of these steps right before you bake. pop this in the refrigerator and then in the morning you can put it right into the oven. saves so much time. >> you have some shortcuts. >> i have shortcuts. we add in some hashed browns. they are frozen. don't worry about them unthawing. throw it in. toally fine and bake it for 25 minutes then we add a little bacon to the top. >> yes, we do. >> the perfect garnish. and then we pop this back -- oh, and cheese too, yes. always. >> don't forget the cheese. >> add that back in the oven and comes out like this. >> how is it? >> it is so good. >> thumb's up. easy too, right? welcome back to "gma" on this first day of 2020. we are about to get happy new year. we have lots of clouds, mild temperatures, patchy fog in the 40s and 50s this morning. towards the afternoon, low 50s. by 3:00, with the holidays behind us so many people looking to get back in shape. make fitness goals they can actually keep so this morning we have equinox instructors here to kick things in place. every year we make the resolution and then by the end of january we're not doing it anymore so what is your tip this year to make that last? >> the tip this year just keep moving. like that's -- you should move

like nobody is watching. that means you can have fun doing it. you can dance with your friends at home in a bar, at "good morning america," there's so many things you can do. you have to have fun. >> dance moves. >> it's so easy like we all could do it. we'll do it together. so you take your three steps to the side then just start to throw this arm and throw that arm so go the other way. >> it's a grapevine. >> throw it the other way. >> i thought i would be better. >> i personally stick to my bathroom. this is my move i suggest for most. it's like pump it here, pump it here and step to the side twice. >> you have a dance move for abs. >> i don't know if anyone is like me i'll eat as much as i can and they call those love handles so i want to work on the love handles. this step and hit so driving it through. >> and a pop through, opposite
