two men arrested after a laptop theft at this starbucks in oakland that left one man dead. the new years off to a dry start but that may not last long. >> traffic and toll ways, one area expected to be hit by huge waves. there's always been crime here but nothing this senseless and someone had to die. it's very sad. >> it is incredibly sad. new developments tonight in a new year's eve tragedy in oakland mont clar village. arrests have been made in a

laptop theft that ended in a man's death. >> kate? >> reporter: well, ama, dan, oakland pd arrested two people but a witness said tonight he saw three suspects, one man ran in, another to open the door and a third masked man to drove the get away car. >> and just turned behind me and the car was disappearing up there at a high rate of speed. >> reporter: his new year's eve morning then took a dark turn when a laptop theft turned deadly. he jumped on his motorcycle to chase after the suspect's black bmw but to no avail. he and others were horrified when they saw the laptop owner lying on antioch street. she wrapped up flowers in crime tape where the young man was

outside her salon. this woman was in starbucks and saw the suspect grab the young woman's laptop. >> the kid jumped in the car and made a super man type dive and there was a struggle and he tried to push him out and he got dragged up the road and that was awful. >> reporter: nearby firefighters tried to help but the man later died at the hospital. fortunately cameras captured the get away >> i think it shouldn't be taken for granted this is safe anymore. i can't imagine what this young person's family is feeling. >> reporter: some of the neighbors told me they're organizing a candlelight vigil this sunday and inviting oakland mayor. they have not released the name of the victim and said their investigation is ongoing.

two sonoma county sheriff deputies are recovering after they crashed their patrol vehicles after racing to a domestic violence call. it happened around 6:20 tonight one of the deputies was taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. do not turn your back on the water. waves can be beautiful, they can also be deadly. that's the warning from the national weather service tonight. >> strong rip currents and dangerous waves are breaking right now. amanda? >> reporter: yeah, larry, ama, it's dark now so a little difficult to see but you can definitely hear the roar of those waves. the national weather service warning we could see 11 to 12 foot swells through tomorrow morning. watch out. we're seeing dangerous waves and rip currents along the

california coast. up to 25 feet in some locations. >> i've surfed a couple of times. these are pretty big. i would not go in these waves. >> 7 minutes south surfers beach offers a few of its own. few decided to catch some wave and others decided pictures. similar sights across the coast, intense waves crashing. the wharf evacuated due to damage by these big waves. and at body dune beach in santa cruz video recorded friday highlights the need for caution. the weather service also warning waves could take over previously dry areas. >> there's not a beach to walk on right now because the waves are so big, so we're just going to have to stay on the path. >> right now they're hitting the rocks really hard. >> they're big like in the movies. >> reporter: back in half moon bay the excitement brought extra

traffic. >> i was like why there's so many people. >> we saw all the traffic coming over here and wondering what was going on and now we know. >> reporter: visitors settled for the sound of crashing waves. >> i'm just listening to the roar of them as they come in and stuff. that's what i'm noticing more. >> reporter: and that high surf advisory is in effect until thursday 9:00 a.m. so if you're headed out here be sure to bundle up and certainly do not turn your back on the >> and those big hitting the coastline for a while longer. let's check in with anchor spencer christian. >> as you no doubt know the waves are dashlgsly high and crashes onshore between heights of 10 and 16 feet right now. we have the danger or

a doctor trained to help humans had a chance to save a dog in florida. look at this, the animal's leash had become stuck in an elevator door. he jumped into action once he saw the dog being pulled up. >> in my head there's nothing else you can do and honestly i wasn't thinking about anything. i dropped all my food and jumped to try to grab the dog and break the leash, initially it didn't work out. i go back at it again and the dog is screaming. >> the pair struggled to free the choking animal for several tense moments before that leash final finally snapped. he checked out the dog and it appeared to be fine. thousands of workers in the bay area started the new year with a pay raise. minimum wage workers got an increase today in several cities including sunnyvale, $16.05. $1.
