santa rosa. with the cloud cover we are mild. 51 in san francisco and 50 in concord. 6 to 14 degrees warmer than we have been, but that's going to change. we are looking at much cooler. we are looking at a sun and cloud afternoon and frosty temperatures sunday morning. new developments of two men accused of stealing a man's laptop are facing charges for his death. the victim went after the suspects and was hit by their car and later died. lee is charged with involuntary manslaughter. reed's sister says he was at her home watching her 3-year-old. >> helping me out. i have four kids and no daddy in

their lives. my brother is there for me all the time and now they want to take him from me. that's not fair. >> according to the charging documents, reed was convicted in november of 2017 of second second degree robbery. a memorial is continues to unfold where this started. >> they can't really stop us from continuing to try to do positive things in the community. >> reporter: williams is one of thousands of families enjoying the first friday of 2020. she brought her grandsons a long to show them this is what the community has to offer, a blend of music, art and cultures. news of the death was tragic, but that won't detour them from coming out. >> we have it all over our community. sometimes we hear about it and sometimes we don't. >> reporter: andrew is from

counter and maybe not worry as much. >> reporter: abc 7 news. developing news, the nation is embracing for what the iran leader has vowed as forceful revenge against america after the country killed a top general. there is high praise and criticism from lawmakers worried america is on the brink of war. >> reporter: president trump says the number one terrorist anywhere in the world is dead. the general killed minutes after he landed at an airport. the president saying he ordered the strike to save american lives. >> he was plotting attacks. we caught him in the act and terminated him. >> reporter: the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff telling

reporters there was evidence indicating violence against the united states in the days, weeks and months. president trump saying the decision to kill the general was meant not to start a war, but to stop one. less than one day after the attack, 3,500 troops are on their way to the middle east and iran's leader is promising severe revenge. in iran thousands taking to to o streets chanting revenge. back home democrats say they weren't informed of the strike until after the fact and are worried about a war in the middle east. >> i think the threat was real. what i don't have confident in that the administration thought through the implications of this action. >> reporter: the president's supporters are supportive of the action. >> this was an attack letting anyone know if you come after americans on president trump's watch, you do so at your own

risk. >> reporter: as retaliation appears all but certain, president trump issuing a warning saying friday if you value your own life, you will not threaten the lives of our citizens. >> there are no credible threats to san francisco. that's according to the police departme department. patrols are increasing as a precaution. the golden gate bridge is asking the public to report anything suspicious. >> situational awareness is extremely important. people should be aware of what's going on and even golden gate bridge. >> we are more on the air strike on our website. there you can find reaction from bay area communities.

new details this morning, we know when we'll start to see cars taken off of market street. private cars will be blocked starting january 29th. commercial vehicles can continue through. muni only lanes will be extended and safety zones will be added. data shows market street is home to some of the most intersections. no body cam video shows two deputies rushing to try to save an elderly couple from a house going up in flames. abc news has the story.

>> reporter: body camera video of two deputies racing to a house fire. >> are out of the fire yet? >> reporter: they find an elderly woman clutching her dog. >> hold on. >> reporter: quickly get her to safety. is there anybody else in the house? >> is my husband out? >> reporter: with flames tearing through the roof, the deputies race into choking smoke looking for the woman's husband, finally finding him tearing down part of a fence and getting him out of the backyard. >> we have your wife. she's in the front. >> we knew we had to act because the fire was going very fast. >> reporter: deputies say they were doing their jobs, but with that couple unharmed, the people who live in that neighborhood say there's no doubt their actions were heroic. abc news. the housing crisis is a key focus in our efforts to building a better bay area.

in san francisco finding affordable living solutions can be tricky. plans for a new apartment complex in the mission. as abc 7 news found out the units could come with a big catch. >> reporter: in san francisco it seems like a new construction starts every other day, but but there's still a housing crisis. how do we fix this? >> one of the things is we need to put massive amounts of public investment into affordable housing. >> reporter: the developer says he has an idea. his project, 219 market rate housing units. 154 of those above ground micro units. 65 affordable housing pods underground. >> what's the more pressing concern? >> reporter: the owner of this

parking lot once used the basement to create sleeping pods. each will cost between $1,000 to $1,375 a month. >> that's affordable? that sounds terrible. >> reporter: the san francisco planning department sent back those plans to that developer who says that his revised version involves windows. the planning department said rooms within a dwelling unit or residence shall be provided with natural light. he says he fixed that by adding a courtyard where natural light will hit the pods. >> they're getting less, but they're paying less. >> reporter: we contacted the planning department for comment and are still waiting to hear back. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them on facebook. new developments, a a a

church struck by thieves before christmas has raised enough money to hand out toys to children tomorrow. that wasn't the case after two thieves walked away with a donation box. the money was meant to buy toys. thanks to a go fund me campaign the church has raised more than $13,000. >> it was amazing to see how many people actually contributed. it was shocking because we weren't expecting that big of an amount coming in. >> reporter: a youth group gathered to sort out the toys. no developments where the city is winning a messy fight with wild pigs. trappers have removed 19 pigs from parks and trails. you may remember the mess those pigs created. at least two dozen animals tore up front yards, parks and a

so the activity in the north bay and it's very spotty at that as we move to the south really the returns are weak and this is going to continue to weaken as it pushes through. we'll get some sunshine on the backside of it. it is 51 in santa clara. up to the north bay, 45. pretty mild to start out there with all the cloud cover and drizzle is probably what most of you will see throughout the early morning hours and by sun rise this is out of here. scattered showers mainly in the north bay turning partly cloudy this afternoon and near freezing temperatures tomorrow and monday morning. behind it not only chilly air, but pretty frosty. numbers right around 30 in the north bay. here in santa rosa cloud cover has kept you mild and a few

good morning and happy saturday. we are starting off this half hour with a look at the weather. >> good morning to you. a very weak weather system pushing through the bay area spreading a few sprinkles in the north bay. it's going to dissipate as it continues to sink to the south. it has kept us mild overnight. we're looking at more activity in northern california and then we'll see elsewhere fog as well. just over mild visibility here for santa rosa. elsewhere just over a mild as well. 47 up in the north bay. 51 for you in fremont. starting out with cloud cover and drizzle. mild temperatures. as much as 14 degrees milder by the delta. by 7:00 a little drizzle along the peninsula. as we go through the 10:00 hour, we're getting sunnier through the north bay and highs in the upper 50s to near 60.

the senate is back in session after the holiday recess. it appears they're no closer to agreeing on witnesses to testify at the impeachment trial. democrats are in court seeking access to a key witness. >> reporter: in the u.s. senate it's business as unusual. >> for now we're content to continue the ordinary business of the senate while house democrats continue to flounder. >> reporter: as the question of whether the articles of impeachment will be forwarded remains in a standoff. >> it's the senate's turn now to render judgment as the founders envisioned. >> reporter: house speaker is refusing to forward the articles of impeachment to the senate until she knows the rules for the trial. mcconnell holding firm only turning to the question of witnesses after opening statements and logistics have

been addressed. as democrats argued. >> never, never in the history of our country has there been an impeachment trial of the president in which the senate was denied the ability to hear from witnesses. >> reporter: the stalemate comes as a federal court hears argument as democrats wants a witness to testify. in new york a witness who allegedly played a key role to assist in efforts to dig up dirt on joe biden has been granted permission to share key materials with house investigators. this isn't the first time he has shared data with investigators. in november he provided photos and videos. in the past house lawyers have said if they received new evidence, they could bring new articles of impeachment against the president. abc news washington. this weekend is expected to

be one of the worst for australia. abc 7 news shows us the destruction firsthand. >> reporter: we've been driving along this highway and this is the scenes we keep seeing after miles of devastation. you can see how hot this fire burned through here. the trees are completely black charred top to bottom and the forest has been completely destroyed and many homes that have gone up in flames. we spoke to neighbors that lost homes. they said they barely were able to make it out, that's how fast the flames were coming to them. we met other people that live near the evacuation zone and said they will stay behind and they have lived through fires and despite the warnings they want to try to stick it out with the firefighters are warning saturday will be intense. some people referring to it as a

serves a big need. they help raise puppies to become guide dogs for the blind. we partner with north carolina state university to help use data to be able to more effectively raise a puppy to become a guide dog for the blind. >> most of what i do in terms of my phd research is focused on data analysis. i am completely blind so i use a guide dog every day and it gives me the freedom that i think many people take for granted. in a busy environment that i've never been to, i no longer dependant on someone to help me. i have the confidence to go anywhere by myself.

collar. it is a small device that collects measurements about the puppy and the environment they're in. if put this together you can paint a picture of this puppy such as when the puppy is in a loud environment their average movement reduces which could be an indicator of stress. all of those data are fed through an application that we developed for the volunteers using a bluetooth connection from a collar to a smartphone and then a smartphone up to ibm cloud. >> it is nice to see the dogs in action and know that you're making a difference in somebody else's life by raising these dogs and to know that one of my dogs that i raised is helping another individual is a feeling that i can't even describe. it's emotional. i am so happy for the dog and i'm so happy for the person because i know that guiding eyes are amazing. >> when this project came up, it was like dots connecting and

abc 7 has that and more in this morning's sports. good morning. quarterbacks and agents they laughed when richard sherman negotiated his own contract with the 49ers. sherman is the one laughing now after getting a $2 million bonus. coming off an injury it wasn't clear how much sherman had left in the tank, but he was named the all pro-second team along with a defensive lineman. that earned sherman a $2 million bonus. it's clear he's focused on getting set for a playoff game next week. >> it is an honor. it's something i'll celebrate after we win more games. >> it's more special knowing what i've been through and the ups and downs of that injury and how it derails a lot of careers. i really wanted it.

>> thank you. now getting a check with our bay area forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you. we are running a little bit behind in rainfall. we could use a good system, but not getting that. just a weak one this morning. here is a look. it looks a little damp out there and a little bit of drizzle and maybe a few puddles. we're looking at this system pushing through throughout the morning hours and leaving us with partly cloudy skies this afternoon. it's a morning event. it's a weak system. it works from north to south. then as it pushes through and brings colder air behind it. we are going to have patchy frost overnight. sunday, monday into tuesday and we're looking at current numbers in the 40s to 50. 51 in san francisco. 45 in gilroy. very mild out there. as we look at the golden gate bridge, you can see a few puddles and damp pavement, but overall the main event pushing

through into extreme northern california in the mountains right now and just a little bit of returns here from the east bay to the south bay. probably not picking much up at all. as we go in closer, a few areas of light showers into the mountains. temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s. winds are breezy. no advisories. through the next couple of hours you can see there's a snow line here and rain and we could be looking at some tough conditions if you're headed up to the mountains for this morning. anywhere from seven to ten degrees above where we were yesterday. san francisco, concord, fairfield is mild. it's a dry start out there for most of you. fog is in the north bay. three miles visibility. on the coast just over a mile. all of this with us through sun rise and then through the 8:00, 9:00 hour the clouds really begin to part. here is the front.

7:00, mist and drizzle over to the east bay and then it thins out. you can see the clear skies throughout the morning hours. in the north bay here it is 1:00 and still looking at clouds in the east and south bay. if we look at the the totals, not measurable precipitation headed our way. 59 today. partly cloudy this afternoon. in oakland look for 60. partly cloudy skies and then tonight we're a little frosty in parts of the north bay. low to mid 30s and 40s elsewhere. keeping it a weak level one on our storm impact scale for the next few hours and then it's partly cloudy. chilly to start tomorrow and monday. a weak system on tuesday and dry wednesday and thursday.
