a cold night tonight. we're dry and sunny with cold mornings through monday. next chance e e e e e e e e e e thank you, robert.e e e e e it is new year's resolution time. so many of us come roaring into january with so much hope but by the end of the month sadly many of us will find ourselves off the wagon and beating ourselves up. this morning, therefore, we're going to tell you about a new approach based in science that promises to make habit change more sane and more successful. it's 10:30 on a thursday night. i'm watching tv with my wife, and suddenly i'm in a moment of peril. >> i'm not even hungry, but a little monkey mind is whispering, dude, let's get involved with that delicious bag of pretzels in the kitchen. >> reporter: many of us deal with that monkey mind. our relentless, instinctive mindless mode which often has us gobbling up food, screen time and consumer goods instead of doing the things we need to do to take care of ourselves.
8:18 am
but habit change is hard. many of us end up on a treadmill of trying and failing and trying and failing. it reminds me of this video my wife shot of our cat tobey chasing his tail. so i took my concerns about my mindless eating -- >> i'm going to take a bite of that. >> reporter: -- to health psychologist, kelly mcgonagle, author of "the joy of movement." >> how is this behavior creating suffering in your life right now? >> one is don't like the way i look in the mirror. two is my pants don't fit the way they used to and i've noticed that i'm uncomfortable. >> reporter: kelly's approach to habit change is different. she starts by asking a deep question, what matters most to you? >> my approach to habit change is to really get to know the part of yourself who wants the best for yourself. >> reporter: kelly got me to realize what matters to me not how my pants fit but the fact that when i overeat i feel badly
8:19 am
and don't have enough energy for my family and my colleagues who i really care about. another tip from kelly, instead of signing up for rigid rules when changing your habits, try having a mind-set of experimentation. >> we have to figure out how will this fit in my life. the only way to figure it out is things that get in the way and learn from it. >> reporter: as thomas edison is reputed to have said, i've never failed, i just tried 10,000 things that didn't work. a final recommendation from kelly, meditation, the practice can help you boost your self-awareness so that when an urge arises, you can see it clearly rather than acting it out blindly. this is also called surfing the urge. instead of trying to suppress the wave of desire, and this can apply to food or shopping or diving into a twitter hole, you actually tune in to all the painful sensations, and that curiosity helps you surf it. so, i tried it. i just let it pass, and it was kind of amazing to watch the wave crest and then pass, and then i didn't feel a desire anymore. >> great information, dan.
8:20 am
and it's really interesting. you talk about incorporating a new habit into your life but it's hard to actually follow through with that. >> it is. it is. >> but it requires some key ingredients like the three es we see here. >> this comes from kelly mcgonigal. the first "e," make it easy -- sorry, make it about your environment so have an environment that supports your new habits. maybe leave your sneakers out if you want to remind yourself to go running or maybe put a picture of your kids next to them as a reminder of why you want to go running. the next "e" is about easy. as i was mentioning before, she talks about something called the ten-minute rule. so maybe just exercise for ten minutes or meditate for ten minutes and you can shave that down to the five-minute rule or the one-minute rule. start small. build from there. >> baby steps. >> baby steps, exactly. here's the third "e." and it is make it enjoyable. you're almost certainly not going to do something if you don't like it. so pick a kind of exercise that you actually like doing. if you're going to eat healthy, make delicious food. >> speaking of easy and enjoyable, if you're wanting to
