ite cheddar cheeseburger combo. ♪ only at jack in the box! ♪ we're beginning with breaking news out of san jose. officers have shot and injured a suspect this morning near capital expressway. this is just south of the east ridge mall. and right now you will be seeing a live picture here coming up from the scene. police say that the suspect was shot and taken to the hospital. we can see crime scene tape there. looks like a car is inside the scene at the gas station. we move out further and you can see other vehicles on the scene actually several there that we're looking at right now. and a larger san jose police vehicle in the background. it is unclear why officers were pursuing this person, we have calls into the san jose police department to get more information. answer

as soon as we do, we'll bring you the updates live and new overnight, a 20-year-old man is in jail after leading officers on a chase. it all started around 11:15 thursday night when a car was reported stolen out of alameda county. an officer tried to do a traffic stop on highway 24 but the suspect sped away and drove to the bay fair b.a.r.t. station where he left the car and ran along the tracks. chp helicopter spotted the suspect trying to hide from officers. he surrendered and was arrested. he has been identified as joseph willis and is being held without bail. and we'll get a check in now on our weekend forecast. here is lisa arregen for us. >> and a cold front kind of fizzled through the bay area. and here is a look at live doppler 7. it is snowing in blue canyon, rain at the tahoe valley

airport. so as the front moves in, it is leaving us with a mix of clouds and sun. here is san jose, in the low 50s, 54 half moon bay. and look at the clearing sky from the golden gate bridge. low 50s concord and fog in the north bay, a milder start for everyone. and throughout the day today, we'll call it partly cloudy, maybe some morning drizzle along the coast. and temperatures in the mid and upper 50s. a little breezy with northwesterly winds and then tonight setting up for a very cold night, but several dry days and a few chances of rain in the seven day. and come men accused of stealing a man's laptop are now facing charges in his death. he went after the specifics but was hit by their getaway car and later died. the suspects charged with involuntary manslaughter and

robbery and also a second degree robbery charge. reed's sister says that he was at her home watching her 3-year-old. >> helping me out. i have four kids and no daddy in their life. my brother is there for me all the time. and now they want to take him from me. that is not fair. >> according to charging documents, reed was convicted in november of 2017 of second degree robbery. so how do you protect yourself from becoming a laptop theft victim at coffee shops? situational awareness is one of the keys to remaining safe. and david louie has wretchf ha e advice. >> reporter: people get so absorbed working that they forget about safety, even when signs warn customers to beware of their belongings. security experts say that many of us lack situational awareness. ignoring who is around us and what could leave laptops

chiefs of staff telling abc news that risks of inaction exceeded risks of action. and that now the ball is in the iranian court. this comes as the united states is now sending 3500 more troops to the middle east. the order to deploy more troops coming after president trump addressed the public for the first time explaining the reason for executing the attack. >> soleimani was plotting imnecht ai imminent and sinister attacks on americans and we caught him in the act. and terminated him. >> reporter: the attack took place at baghdad airport thursday night after the u.s. began tracking soleimani with a drone, launching missiles that destroyed his vehicles and left soleimani and several others dead. an image from the wreckage identified a large ring sole any

and we are starting with a live look from our breaking news that we are following in san jose. so here is what we know at this hour. officers have shot and injured a suspect this morning. it happened around 7:15 on quinby road just south of the east ridge mall. we have calls into police to understand why they were pursuing the suspect. you can see this is definitely an active scene and we have crime scene tape you surrounding the gas station there with the car inside. several officers on the scene. and we also have something from the vta just wanting to let you know that the transit center will remain open, but you stops immediately outside of the mall

area may be affected while law enforcement is there on the scene. so make sure to check with the schedules to see if you will be impacted this morning. stay with us to get the latest on this. and we'll also continue the coverage on a abc7news.com and on the abc 7 news app. and new details this morning, we now know exactly when we'll start to see cars taken off of market street. private cars will be blocked starting january 29th. uber and lyft can continue through. muni only lanes will be extended. data shows that market street is home to some of the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians and bikers. the housing crisis is a major challenge where we live and it is a key focus in our efforts to building a better bay area. and in san francisco, finding affordable living solutions can be tricky. case in point, plans for a new

apartment complex on 15th street and van ness avenue in the mission. and as we found out, the budget units could come with a big catch. >> reporter: seems like new construction starts every other day, but there is still a housing crisis. how do we fix it? >> one of the things is that we need to put massive amounts of pin investment into affordable housing. >> reporter: he says that he has an idea, his project, 219 market rate housing units. 154 of those above ground micro units. and here is what some might see as a catch. 65 affordable housing pods underground. >> what withdrew rather have, wh -- what would you rather have, a place for people to sleep or a place to park your bike. >> reporter: and chris elsey owns this parking lot and he wants to use the basement to create sleeping pods, each will

cost between $1,000 to $1375 a month. >> that is affordable? doesn't sound affordable to me. sounds terrible. >> reporter: and the planning department sent back the plans to the developer who says that his revised version involves windows for the pods. and the planning department says that habitable rooms excluding kitchens home offices and media roo rooms shall be provided with natural light. elsey says that he added a courtyard where natural light will hit the pods. >> getting less, but paying less. >> reporter: and we contacted the planning department for contact and are still waiting to hear back. >> and twe want to hear your ideas. share them by building our group on facebook. new developments now, a san jose church struck by thieves

before christmas has now raised enough money to hand out toys to hundreds of children tomorrow. that was the case after thieves walked away with the did did he box that was meant to buy toys. and thanks to a gofundme campaign though, the church has now raised more than $13,000. >> and it was shocking because we weren't expecting that big of an amount coming in. >> and that is awesome. a youth group gathered to sort out the toys for the kids. and happening today, it is the first of three job fair opportunities within the city and county of san francisco. departments include rec and park, human resources, sheriff's department, sfpd, fire department and much more. today's event runs from 10:00 to 1:00. there will be two more job fairs each month.

but we have sun for much of the bay area. there could be some mist and drizzle out there. there is heavy cloud cover at sfo where delays are at about 38 minutes. with the fog and possible drizzle, temperatures are mild to start out, but they are not going to be getting very warm today. northwesterly winds will be the key to the cool forecast twith chilly start in the morning tomorrow. half moon bay is at 5 wi4 and 5n san francisco. 45 in santa rosa. temperatures are dropping behind the front, but with the sun, we'll warm up a bit just into the 50s for many of you. and right now it is a comfortable 52 in concord. and the 24 hour temperature change where we're still above where we were yesterday, 2 to 7 degrees warmer out there. so as we look at the golden gate

bridge, a few sprinkles mainly along the coast and partly cloudy this afternoon. northwesterly winds are keeping a chill in the air and freezing temperatures, some of the valleys tonight and also into tuesday -- sunday, monday on morning and then tuesday another system will visit us, we'll show you that in a moment. so here is the rest of the day today where the clouds continue to thin out, no precip. so just a partly cloudy afternoon. but as we go through the next several day, we'll talk about our rain chances which will being slim and maybe getting better by the end of the week. so a weak system to the north of us. so drive into sunday, monday. tuesday night looking at a possible shower right into wednesday. it is a weak system. thursday it is dry and then again into friday, here is the next chance of rain that looks like a more organized system into next weekend. highs today in the upper 50s, it will be cool at the coast with those the northwesterly winds. a few extra clouds around the

and you can see it from petaluma for santa rosa. we had all the clouds overnight, and by 10:00, we're sunny in the north bay, clouds thin out the rest of the bay area and then by noontime, we're partly cloudy, upper 50s, a few 60s out there by 4:00. and we're dry. but as we get set for a chilly evening tonight, we have a couple of them, we'll see some patchy frost and still some rain to talk about in the extended lookout. and now to the raging wildfire catastrophe in australia. it is the kind of emergency scientists say is made more damaging by climate change. tens of thousands have been driven from their homes and millions of animals are threatened. maggie rulli is on the ground with more information for us. >> reporter: conditions here

just keep getting worse. we are seeing high winds, soaring temperature, flames like this popping up. you can hear the feheat and the winds. these are the conditions concerning firefighters. and they are on either side of the major highway and they are saying if you haven't evacuated, now is the time to shelter in place. this morning flames are raging across australia. with temperatures well over 100 and high winds whipping dangerous flames. the fires are quickly getting out of control. we just got told to leave the area. more than 140,000 residents told to evacuate. some who decided to stay behind fleeing to the beach. >> it is getting scary.

>> reporter: firefighters are facing a relentless battle. and the flames are sweeping the southeastern coast engulfing an area larger than more than 50 new york citys. and the prime minister announcing that deployment of reservists to help with the crisis. >> the surge includes deployment of up to 3,000 forces. the priority is to assist ensuring the safety of life. >> and the united states sending happy from the forest service and department of the interior. destruction devastating the delicate ecosystem. and daughter of stever w eirwins my heart breaks for those who have lost so much. our hospital is busier than ever. and guy, conditions are only getting worse, even since we've been standing here, the flames have already ripped up the highway and firefighters are warning everyone to hang in there for a long night.

guide dog every day. and having that gives me the freedom that i think many people take for granted. so in a busy environment that i've never been to, i'm no longer gipd evedefend even through it. >> and we start to chat about the ideas. and in the research for animal, he had the idea of trying to do it for dogs. so i was also trying to do it on i believe secretary insects. but the movie "up" came to the wide screen. >> he is a good and smart master. >> it was an ah-ha moment. and we had a collaboration for nine years. >> and the team worked on smart emergency response so we were focusing on search and rescue dogs and how it could be integrated into a broader

platform. and guiin now here we are fe fee later and continuing to make significant progress and some of the early results in the space are incredibly impressive. the collar bears no resemblance to a shock collar. put simply, it is a small electronic device that is collecting objective measures about the puppy's behavior and about the environment that they are in. so if you put it all together and we can start to paint a picture of that puppy's behavior through things like when the puppy is in a loud public environment, their average movement reduces which could be an indicator of stress. and all of the data are fed through an application that we developed for the volunteer smartphones using a bluetooth connection. >> and it is so fun to just see the dogs in action and know that you are making a difference in somebody else's life by raising

these dogs and to know that one of my dogs that i raised is helping another individual is a feeling that i can't even describe. it is very emotional. i'm so happy for the dog and i'm so happy for the person. because i know that guiding eyes, the impact they have had is amazing. >> and this project came up, it was like dots connecting. and it was a beautiful picture of expanding out. and we are bringing our solutions to them. >> as a scientist, you can get clinical. but this is one project that has been a major exception to that. the more we interact with guide dog users, the more we interact with the community that is working so hard to havage in h - impa impact, so it instills a sense of pride. >> and it is essential that all tech companies do a lot to work and help nonprofit organizations

bigger storm could arrive late friday into next weekend. playoff time for the 9ers, football game here. and looking at temperatures in the 50s right now, so it feels mild. but if you are at the coast, the northwesterly winds really going to make it feel cool. so that is ushering in a colder air mass. it kind of fell apart and we are looking at not only the clouds lingering in parts of the bay right now, but we have rain and snow in the mountains. so it is mainly rain, but we had a changeover to snow around blue canyon and then advisories for wind in the mountains. 0 mile visibility in petaluma, it is thick there. but the rest othe north bay is improving. and so the clouds overnight and we started out really mild out there and now things are beginning to level off. and because the cooler air is going to move in, but we'll have
