4:35 pm
just good football there. brown beats him a couple of plays ago. conley comes back, covers him on that one. >> joe: watson's not even looking at the field. watt trying to get to him and that ball should have been intercepted. bradley roby was breaking on it and nearly came up with it to close out this wild card game. >> booger: josh allen, as hard as he looked in the first half, here in the late quarter, that's a late throw, deep route across the field, you can't be late with it. >> joe: right through the arms. right against the gut. and josh allen has hit on only one of his last seven. 34 seconds left. a third down and ten.
4:36 pm
no time-outs. there's the slant, and there's beasley. no time-outs but now they're in field goal range for hauschka to send us to overtime. >> joe: they need to figure out is it a first down or fourth down. >> referee: play will go under review. >> booger: that's the point. because if this is a first down they can get up and spike it and they don't have to rush the field goal team on the feel, so they need to establish the spot of the ball and whether this is a first down or not. >> take a look at the left knee there. is he touched while that left knee is down. if so it will be short. >> joe: well, let's determine that. >> booger: if he's toich touched and he's short, it's fourth down and you have to run the team on the field. if not it's a first down and you still have other plays.
4:37 pm
>> joe: was he touched did hargreaves touch him here? >> booger: he touched him, but at what point though? at what point did he touch him? >> joe: right there. >> right arm. if we piece a few things together, it seems as though. >> booger: looks a little short. >> looks a little short. i agree with you. >> joe: difference between a first down and a fourth down. >> booger: so if that's going to be short, that means clock is running. you have to get the field goal team on the field toying they're on the field now. stephen hauschka is on the field now. >> if we come back with a reversal -- if it was originally awarded a first down and now we come back with a reversal with a running clock, they'll take a look at that point on the clock,
4:38 pm
ten-second runoff back in play. >> joe: he's in midair when he's touched, and that's the point. you can see he's short at that point when he's touched as he's lunging ahead. >> booger: that will set up roughly -- when all this is sorted out, roughly a 47-yard field goal try. >> joe: and the texans have blocked two field goal attempts this year. >> referee: after review the ruling on the field stands, buffalo ball, first down. >> joe: wow. second time the bills convert a third and ten on this drive alone. >> booger: yeah, so buffalo had the field goal team on so he's telling them. >> joe: the punter under center. >> booger: he's telling them to spike it. because it's a first down, you spike it.
4:39 pm
now it's second down. now they have time to regroup and figure out how they want to attack the last 20 seconds. >> joe: as a nfl head coach i'm not feeling great about my punter under center but he got t it done. now they clock it. and now it's second down and the offense can come back out to the field and manage things. but you got to manage things carefully with these tender moments. >> booger: tell your quarterback, you cannot take a sack. so these are going to be quick outbreaking routes if you want to throw the football, which it looks like they will do. >> joe: josh allen nearly lost his head earlier lateraling the ball in a pressure moment. you have to play smart here. and a time-out is going to be used. well, if this is any indication as to how the next few weeks are going to go, this is going to be
4:40 pm
a thrilling nfl playoff. here is the nfc playoff picture. we will see how this drama unfolds, and then jim and tony will have all the action for the titans and patriots. vrabel and belichick, the sixth different coaches combination featuring a former player against his old head coach matchup in the postseason. for now, back to action. >> booger: if i'm houston on defense, i'm dropping back planned zone, keeping everything in front of me. the one thing you can't do is give up the touchdown here. here's allen. deep. he wanted every bit of it with duke williams. that leaves 15 seconds remaining. >> booger: a tell you what, if i'm sean mcdermott at this point
4:41 pm
you almost run a quick draw play, get a few yards, spike it. >> joe: third and ten. got watch that clock. took a shot last time. does he do it again? to the end zone he goes. and here we go now to see if we will get 19-19. the latest bills field goal attempt since scott norwood in super bowl 25. in a playoff game. hauschka. 47-yard attempt to tie us up here in this wild card game.
4:42 pm
and a time-out. as they exhaust all. ten seconds remaining. hauschka made from 40, 30, and 38 today. hauschka has been excellent with postseason kicks. told you, 23 of 24 in his playoff career. the lone miss was a 55 yarder when he was with seattle in 2016. there has never been a playoff game, 19-19, at the end of regulation. could we have that right here right now out of the foot of hauschka? how about it, buffalo?
4:43 pm
as about as outrageous as a fourth quarter in a wild card game as you'll see. has this to happcap it. 47-yard field goal from stephen hauschka, his fourth of the day. 34-year-old veteran and josh allen, the 23-year-old young franchise quarterback. sean mcdermott. some tense moments in those final minutes but somehow, some way. bill o'brien, who saw his team roar back from 16-0 down, as deshaun watson had that great nine-play drive that he capped with a 20-yard rushing touchdown to start the comeback. and now we're five seconds away
4:44 pm
from overtime. as the squib kick should get us there. a knee down with four ticks remaining. gillaspia smartly does that. deshaun watson. an encore performance awaits, perhaps. >> booger: how about these two quarterbacks, though? back and forth. deshaun watson, josh allen. both of them not giving in in big moments. the comeback. 19 unanswered by the texans. >> joe: the last wild card game to go to overtime, that was tim tebow's magical moment.
4:45 pm
2011. when the broncos beat the steelers 29-23. nfl 100 has overdelivered all season long, so why not have the playoffs start that way? 19-19 o.t. >> booger: sounds pretty good to me. >> joe: i'll take it, brother. captains will walk out. big number 99 will walk out there for houston. j.j. watt, who had a moment that really sparked the team, a big sack, and they responded offensively. >> referee: gentleman, we'll go to overtime. there must be a winner to the game. we will play the game as if it's a regular game starting in the third quarter with first quarter
4:46 pm
timing rules. each team will be allowed three time-outs per half. if nobody scores in the first quarter, we'll go on to the second quarter and switch sides as we normally would. any questions? all replay reviews will come from upstairs. your coaches will not be allowed to challenge the play. as visitors you get to call the toss. >> heads. >> referee: number 17 calls heads. >> referee: it is tails. houston won the toss, and they will receive. >> joe: overtime when we return to houston.
4:48 pm
our fiofficiating analyst john parry with you. it's just like overtime except we have to have a winner. >> easy version, we are starting a new football game. each team will have to opportunity to possess the football. all the other rules are in play, but it's basically a first quarter. >> joe: but the guy who has the football and has the chance for a win is deshaun watson. since falling behind 16-0, how's 8 for 8, 111 yards and a touchdown? >> booger: that's pretty good. he's made a lot of those plays by extening out of the pocket, running the football and finding deandre hopkins down the field. let's see if that formula is a formula they go with here in overtime. >> joe: remember, a touchdown on this drive wins it for houston.
4:49 pm
there was some movement up front. you see the finger pointing with jerry hughes right away. this is going to go against the texans. >> referee: false start, offense number 78. five-yard penalty. remains first down. >> booger: and that's false start number 14 on the season for l arc remy tunsil. two today. 14 total. just a little twitchy out because he sees hughes, a slippery day come in the. >> joe: you asked him about that yesterday. it was a big shake of the head from the big guy. watson has been die nam you cyne stretch. can he stay that way. drives the ball to hopkins over the middle, out to the 30 yard line. that's ten yards there. see if he got his hands under
4:50 pm
this, secures it. had 104 catches this year. >> booger: absolutely. not even close to a drop there. >> joe: first-team all-pro. >> booger: see if they spy watson, drop coverage. the bills that is. >> joe: there's hyde. great effort by the front for buffalo, including neal and others coming in to fill it. and we will have a third down and three for the texans. >> joe: duke johnson splits out.
4:51 pm
watson waving him back in. third and three. pressure on watson. gets to the outside then throws the ball and fells has it go right off his hands. menacing pressure from the buffalo front, and still watson should have had a completion. >> booger: yeah, the bills get aggressive. they bring milano. watson escapes but out of the corner of his eye he sees fells and the big fella can't hang on. outstanding job by watson of eluding the blitz. fails the make the play. >> joe: brian anger comes on to punt. andre roberts sitting back at the 20. maybe in position for a return here. angers had a good year punting. second in net average. needs to drive one here. and it is secured for the fair
4:52 pm
catch to roberts. so now buffalo gets the ball with a chance to win with a field goal. >> next score wins. >> joe: next score wins. so josh allen drove his team 11 plays, 41 yards to set up to game-tying field goal with hauschka, who's 4 for 4 on the day, and now here he is back out on the field. buffalo trying to win their first playoff game since 1995. he's going to run. and he's wrapped up by justin reid. that is a loss of two. >> booger: reid made the tackle but the play was made by number 59 whitney mercilus. allen wanted to come inside. mer plus came in there, made him
4:53 pm
bounce out. nice play by mercilus. if you notice how buffalo moved the ball it's bun unorthodox plays. what play is brian daboll going to scheme up to get this drive started in. >> joe: second and 12. allen, look at the time he has. allen. he's going to launch it deep. and that is incomplete. that was patrick dimarco, the 234-pound fullback all the way down field, but justin roeid wa waiting there. >> booger: yeah, i'm not liking some of the decisions allen is making here. the lateral. now this is just a normal throw. here's the problem though -- this is the playoffs and it's overtime. you can't make that yolo throw here. josh allen has to make better
4:54 pm
decisions. the you only live once throw, he can't make it. >> joe: now you got live with a third and 12 because of it. can they convert? allen, third and 12. he goes underneath to his tight end, and the first down by dawson knox. the rookie out of ole miss. good looking young athlete. and the fleet feet will move the chains 14 yards on third and 12. >> booger: first of all, great pass protection and when it did break down allen got out of the pocket. again, these two quarterbacks have done a nice job today of extending plays, keeping their eyes down the field and making throws and allen just did it again. >> joe: jump to the inside against vernon hargreaves gets the first down for dawson knox. trying to set up stephen hauschka for yet another field goal attempt and a game win they are winner this time. allen to the near side, but closing on it well that time was
4:55 pm
roby. he came straight in against john brown. >> booger: roby played a really good game today. he's dropped two interceptions but overall his coverage has been tight. could have been an even bigger game had he caught those picks. signed a one-year deal, $10 million, an improvement deal. he's come to houston and proved it. >> joe: this is a proving moment here for the defense against josh allen. time-out is going to be used by buffalo. you made the comment moments ago about some moments here about the end of regulation and overtime. i asked you at the start of today's broadcast, do you trust the a young guy? >> overall he's played well. he's tried to make plays. sometimes the play hadn't been there and lateral and then the
4:56 pm
throw down the field. he hasn't played like this since his first start. played like a rookie sometimes, but overall he's been poised and i want to ball in his hands, but he's got to be smart and not turn it over. >> joe: he's got guts, confidence, he has great running ability. can he put them in position now? next score wins this game. after texans first had it and then had to punt away. >> booger: looks like they got one-on-one for j.j. watt. >> joe: second and nine. here comes watt, right in his face, and he has to throw it and it's incomplete. the stunning return of the three-time nfl defensive player of the year and he has made an impact. >> booger: i take that back. it wasn't one-on-one. it was one on none. because cody ford went down. took businessman been on the inside and it left j.j. watt unblocked. >> legal contact there. gets to the side of the quarterback. not roughing the passer by rule.
4:57 pm
>> joe: pbig opportunity for th texans defense here. third down and nine. watt, hand in the ground, up against the rookie right tackle, cody ford. third and nine. allen. extending the play. now setting up. trying to find an option. and he does so! and it is devin singletary! what a moment from josh allen! 14 yards on third and nine. >> booger: it's a great moment, because number 52, mingo is chasing josh allen. he sees it but still makes the play. singletary uncovered. >> joe: there's a raw athleticism about this guy where he can just be a rule breaker. he can do things you shouldn't
4:58 pm
do, and he just pulled it off right there, and now they are knocking on the door of field goal range here. he's going to run quarterback sweep again. this time he's taken down hard by zach cunningham. >> booger: zach cunningham right here, you got love it. it's a quarterback sweep. linemen out front. he misses the black, and there we go. boom. >> joe: nobody got a piece of cunningham. >> booger: and he had two blockers in front and nobody touched him. that's just a missed block assignment there by buffalo. >> joe: second and nine. they got pressure. they pick it up. allen goes short that time to cole beasley. incomplete. it will be third and nine.
4:59 pm
third and ten, he was able to go to knock for 14 yards. then the third and nine he extended the play and somehow found singletary. hauschka lost his chance. right now they're at the 42. regular season career long is 58. he could use a little real estate here. >> booger: they motion them back out, so josh allen knows he's got man-to-man across the board. >> joe: third down and nine. allen. he's going to tuck and go up and try to get over cunningham. and a flag is down at the 46. >> i think it might be an illegal blindside block. a lineman is coming back towards the goal line. force with the shoulder.
5:00 pm
koeg i think they're going get codyford. >> joe: personal foul, blindside block. number 70. third down. >> booger: that's huge because they were in field goal penalty to set up a game winning kick. the rookie, cody ford, you can't just do that. the quarterback is by you. past the defend every. there's no reason for to you make a play other than selfishness trying to get a hit on 54. >> joe: so now the ball is all the way back at the 43. third down and 24. three-man defense by the texans here. they're just going try to go underneath, and even that is
5:01 pm
incomplete. >> booger: and that's important because, yeah, you're not going to get the first down, but you can get field position for our punter here. so sean mcdermott was just trying to get a catch, steal some yards because the texans were in three-man deep and they dropped the ball. >> joe: so now each team has had the ball and each team has had the send their punter out. the bills were threatening though. the costly penalty. now bojorquez is going to look to pin here. carter is back at the 10. this is a knuckleball of a punt. and it takes a bounce sideways rather than driving inside the 10, and then lingers there near the 17. >> booger: well, partner, how many times have we seen this guy in the moment when the game is
5:02 pm
on the line, not only in college buck also in the nfl, with the ball in his hands wanting to make the play? >> joe: it's the way he wants it and he's done it five times this year. last year, the wild card game was miserable for deshaun watson. he said having that experience helped. knowing how to go about the focus, deal with the intensity, set out that 6:00 a.m. group text simply saying to everybody, let's be great. let's see if he can be great right here and win the game. next score wins it. watson. as he goes to hopkins. and hop kkins is going to be wrestled down just short of the marker. let's see where they mark this here. forward progress gives them the first down. >> booger: watch the blitz pickup by carlos hyde. he pick it up. allows watson to have time. here has been the adjustment --
5:03 pm
no longer are we runs hopkins on deeper routes. we are running crossing routes in front of the vision of the quarterback so watson can see him, and that duo has hooked up a lot here in overtime. >> joe: i don't know about the spot of giving them the first down there. john parry what was your read on that? >> when you go become and look at it looks like it might be half a yard short, but based on the camera angle might be -- >> joe: when i was calling it in realtime i thought it was short. generous spot. second and nine now as duke johnson motions out. >> booger: and i know buffalo doesn't like to blitz, but you got to get watson out of his pocket, and here they come. here they come. safety blitz. and tacking him down that time
5:04 pm
was neal! siran neal able to get to deshaun watson. the seventh time they've sacked watson today. >> booger: here's what watson's going see. that he has two guys are coming. they're both going come in the. they bring two. only can block one. now watson has got to throw hot. but he can't do it. they don't like to blitz a lot. but when they do, they make it count. that's a nice call there by defensive coordinator leslie frazier. a timely blitz creating a third and long. and now buffalo's going to drop back and play zone coverage the way they know how to. >> joe: third and 18. watson. he's going to go underneath here. and johnson is going to make the most of it and get right to that yellow line. let's see where they mark it here. excellent job by duke johnson. 18 yards on third and 18.
5:05 pm
>> booger: we said they were going to drop back and play zone coverage, but they got entirely too deep. leaving all this space open underneath. it's one thing to play soft zone, but you got to have guys at least at the sticks. >> joe: majority of the d.b.s were at 25 and 35 yards down field. >> referee: the previous play will go under review. >> booger: i think leslie frazier wanted soft zone, but not quite that soft. >> this angle is going push the ball forward since we are behind where the runner is down. if we can get down the angle shot. >> joe: lunged his body forward and thus the knees didn't hit right away. >> booger: even bounced forward just a hair. >> joe: watch the knees. watch the forearm. see a bills defender underneath him at that moment. remembering the ruling on the
5:06 pm
feel is that it is a first down. >> right now i'm sure they're going stand unless we hit something else. but boy, it's tough to see that knee. >> joe: you like it as a first down? >> i like it as a stand based on what we have seen so far. there's nothing clear and obvious that would tell you it's short of the line to gain. >> booger: that's a good call by leslie frazier but bad execution by the bills defense. you want to play soft zone, but you don't want your guys 30 yards deep and give up the first down. >> joe: here comes tony occurring grafton. >> referee: after review, the ruling on the feel will stand. first down, houston. >> joe: first down for the texans. reminder, next score wins here. playoff overtime. keep going until we get a winner. the beauty of this stage of the
5:07 pm
game. postseason. >> referee: clock operator please reset the game clock to ten seconds. game clock operator please reset the clock to 6:07. >> joe: regular season long of 55 yards for fairbairn, hit from 41 today. and in overtime he's three for three in his career. >> booger: this is pressure football at its finest. >> joe: it really is. >> booger: looking in on the next play. that's how these guys are playing right now. the pressure and the excitement all mounting up. >> joe: so much was asked of each team. >> referee: question about the game clock in relation to play clock. they are correct. >> that play clock was inside ten seconds so they reset it by rule to ten.
5:08 pm
tell the quarterback he's got snap it within ten. we should be good to go. >> joe: they're set up the and ready to go. with that, wattsen is going keep and carry hyde with him for five yards. i was just making the point, so much was asked of each team. buffalo was driving and watt came up with a big sack. that kept it as a two possession game that many really sparked things on the sidelines. watson had to come up big with key plays to keep the drive alive, just get on the board. all of a sudden buffalo had a comeback and forced overtime. now both teams have had the ball in overtime. >> joe: second and five. watson. and a good pitch and catch to kenny stills. ten yards there. nice rhythm with watson and stills. >> booger: and stills just
5:09 pm
abuses number 29, kevin johnson. dropping back in the pocket and just an easy outroute there. he turned 29 around. look at the poise. of deshaun watson. big conversion there. >> joe: now they're marching here past midfield, trying to get fairbairn a shot. hyde taken ahead for three, four yard there is. >> joe: we know the struggles in the postseason for the texans and coach bill o'brien well aware, he's been talking about what it takes and the messaging to the team this week. four of the last five years they've won the afc south, but getting past and over these tough wild card games -- >> booger: you got give them a lot of credit for the second-half adjustments today. they were dead. he and watson made the adjustments. their team came back and fought
5:10 pm
really, really hard. >> joe: second and six here. watson, pressure off the edge. watson survives it and then checks down to jones. jones inside the 40, inside 30. in the 20, to the 10 yard line. taiwan jones! deshaun watson, magical. 34 yards. >> booger: and the buffalo bills had them doed right. milano and neal, they bring the blitz. but the guy that dabo swinney said was the closest thing he's seen to michael jordan, he put the "s" on his chest, got out and made an unbelievable throw. >> joe: two men, full speed, ran into him at the same time and he stood up to it and came up with
5:11 pm
what is the play of the game. first and goal. and a time-out is going to be used by houston. he has had come from behind drama before, like what he did with the college football national championship on the line. the 2017 national championship. hunter renfrow with a second remaining. as clemson became national champions for the first time since 1981. and then this play right here. >> booger: i mean, that's no excuse. if you're the buffalo bills you got two defenders running scot-free -- milano and neal. scot-free at watson. yeah, young man, you are strong. >> joe: ka'imi fairbairn is trotting out on to the field. bill o'brien has made the decision that let's take care of business right now.
5:12 pm
3 for 3 on field goal attempts in overtime for fairbairn. coming into this game he had never attempt a postseason field goal. now he has a chance to win a wild card game in overtime with a 28-yard attempt. will this cap an all-time thriller here? and a time-out will be used by buffalo. and to consider where houston was just lingering in that third quarter when they trailed 16-0, and the offense looked like it wasn't going anywhere -- >> booger: what did we talk about? somebody had to step up and make a play. first it was watt, then it was mercilus. then the adjustments they made an offense. bill o'brien getting deshaun watson on the edge.
5:13 pm
throwing the football to deandre hopkins underneath. you got to give bill o'brien and this team a lot of credit for the guts, the heart they showed here in the second half, and j.j. watt got it kicked off with a sack to end the drive. >> joe: the bills have blocked two field goal attempts this year. fairbairn for the win in overtime to advance the texans. got it! great game in houston. nfl 100. perfect start to the playoffs. 22-19 in an overtime wild card classic.
5:14 pm
>> booger: wow. >> joe: the texans had been 0-22 on their bill o'brien when trailing 16 points a game. they come all the way back. buffalo punches back to the final bell, and then fairbairn wins it after deshaun watson pulled off a magical play, staying alive to put them in position. let's go down to the field to lisa salters. >> lisa: thank you, tess. j.j., is this why you rushed back? >> this is why you come back. i don't know if i meant to come back this time, but this feeling these emotions these fans, these players, deshaun watson, all the guys on the team, that's why you come back. >> lisa: your guys were down 16-0. then your sack. what changed?
5:15 pm
>> spark. energy. all you need is a little bit of spark. er never out of the game when you have deshaun watson as your quarterback. >> lisa: what were you guys saying to each other when you scored the 19 unanswered. >> all we needed was a play to start it. we have a ton of talent, a ton of guys who know what they're doing and one hell of a quarterback. >> >> lisa: you sure do. i didn't know you were behind me. how did you escape that sack? >> just never quit. kevin johnson was here last year. he knew the signal. i managed. it's dor die right now. i just had to make a play. i told the guys before the game, i said, i put a card in their locker. i said, let's be great today. somebody had to be great. why not me? >> lisa: did you see taiwan jones make that catch? >> i did. i threw it to him. i heard the crowd going crazy.
5:16 pm
i could see him running. it's amazing. >> lisa: what did you learn an about your team today? >> we never quit regardless. whatever it takes to get the win -- we'll keep fighting and do our best. >> lisa: thank you. congratulations on the win. >> joe: they had to play a long time tonight, deep into overtime. 3:20 remaining. and this was the game winner from ka'imi fairbairn. 28 yards through and true. good operation, good hold. and then fairbairn, that moment that all kickers dream of -- game on the line, and this one postseason pressure. but the star tonight, the star of stars, deshaun watson. his second playoff start, and he
5:17 pm
pulls it off. and this guy for a playoff debut, he gave us a little bit of everything. moments early that were wow. moments late that you shook your head. in the end, a thrilling drive to closeout regulation. josh allen as bill o'brien celebrates and sean mcdermott knows he's heading back to buffalo with a very strong team for the future, but this one was for the taking today. but instead it's in the grass with j.j. watt and his stunning return from injury. 22-19, the texans advance past the bills in overtime. of course the titans and patriots, still business to do on cbs. for our viewers on espn, stay tuned for the ram trucks postgame report coming up on "sportscenter." on abc, brad paisley thinks he's special is coming up. for the entire crew, enjoy the rest of your night, everybody. so long from houston.
