tonight on abc 7 news at 6:00, a threat of a fire leads to gunfire. san jose police shot a man accused of trying to ignite a pump at a gas station near a popular shopping mall. and the bay area library system attacked by ransom ware and what was done to thwart it. this is not just any truck and trailer. the valuable items inside that were stolen and who they belong to. abc 7 news at 6:00 starts right now. >> now, news to build a better bay area, from abc 7. protesters filled the streets of san francisco, following the u.s. airstrike in iraq. has raised fears a war could

break out in the middle east. good evening and thanks for joining us, i'm dion lim. we saw protests around the country today following the u.s. air strike that killed one of iran's top military leaders. their fear, we could be on the brink of war. people filled the street from los angeles to philadelphia to times square in new york city. protesters gathered in cities in the bay area as well, to protest a possible war with iran. >> hands off iraq! >> hands off iraq! >> abc 7 news was in san francisco where groups marched outside city hall at noon. people could be heard chanting "hands off iran", along santa clara street between powell and market. protesters we talked to said the president's action won't deter future attacks but will only lead to more deaths on both sides. >> my reason for being here is we've gone to iraq, iran, it

didn't work. we've created terrorists. we've created isis. we need to stop. no more war. >> there was also an anti-war protest held in san jose. tensions between the u.s. and iran are soaring following the death of head general qassem suleimani in a u.s. airstrike. thousands gathered on the streets of baghdad at the funeral procession for the hero, chanting "death to america." today a station was hit by a rocket but no americans were injured. the president is defending his decision and the chaian of the joint chiefs of staff tells abc news that the risk of inaction exceeded risks of action. congress is angry they weren't informed before the strike. >> the question we have to be asking ourselves today is whether qassem suleimani is more dangerous to the united states alive or dead, as a martyr.

>> intelligence bulletin says iran will almost certainly retaliate. 3,000 american troops have been sent to the middle east to counter this threat. >> well, the airstrike in iraq has trickled down to the sports world. the u.s. men's soccer team has canceled its plan to train in qatar this month. instead, they will train someplace in the united states. the exact location, though, will be determined shortly. the team has an exhibition qatar is the home of the 2022 world cup. police shot a man trying to light paper in the nozzle of a gas pump. it happened near the east ridge mall. abc 7 news reporter joins us live from that very gas station with the latest. unser? >> reporter: good evening.

the road opened about a haf hour ago. it had been closed since 7:30 this morning. the suspect shot is in stable condition. i spoke with the manager at the gas station. she credits her employee for thinking fast and shutting off the gas. >> a male had driven away with a pump still attached to his vehicle. he has since returned but now he has a lighter in his hand. unknown what he's going to do with the lighter. >> reporter: the manager says her employee called her at home asking what to do after reporting a driver threatening to set one of the gas nozzles on fire. >> i don't know. that's crazy. >> could have been dangerous. >> yeah. going to blow up. i don't see why he would try to light the gas station on fire. >> reporter: the threat of the fire has many nearby residents thankful that the situation didn't escalate. the man was armed with a metal bar and charged with officers, according to police. in an e-mail, san jose police say officers used multiple, less-lethal options that had no

effect. the officers ultimately discharged their firearms in response. >> shots fired, shots fired! >> a couple gunshots to the torso. >> reporter: the area was littered with evidence markers, including non-lethal items police described. not only was traffic impacte but vta buses weren't stopping at the mall because of the investigation. >> very dangerous. >> reporter: runjooet singh is grateful the employee was able to shut off the gas. he says his neighborhood and the nearby east ridge mall could have been at risk. >> it could have hit the shopping center, and then everyone could die. >> reporter: again, the suspect is hospitalized in stable condition. san jose police say they will have an update on monday. reporting live, unser hassan, abc 7 news. in the east bay, abc 7 news has learned that contra costa

county lab county library system is the latest victim of a ransom ware attack. they found the hackers' message. abc 7 news reporter lus pena joins us with the latest. >> that message was found at 6:20 a.m. on friday. investigators have not revealed what exactly it stated. many are concern the and are hoped that changes are implemented so attacks hike tlis are avoided in the future. a total of 26 libraries were affected. the affected servers have been taken offline while some services were restored. it was first found in administrative offices in martinez. no wi-fi or printing is available at any of the

branches. >> the library does store some information about us. i'm open to believing them. i'm glad we don't store social security numbers or credit cards at the library. >> they locked them down with the ransom ware, and they requested a key in order to open it. there was no dollar amount attached to that key. >> reporter: in the past, driver's license information were collected. in 2019, the library ended this practice and said they removed all driver's license information from their records. now forensic analysis is being implemented at this time to figure out where the cyber attack originated. it's still unclear what the hackers' purpose was by hacking the system. the d.a.'s office and sheriff's department are investigating. luce pena. some military families were moving, but then the truck carrying their belongings was

. someone stole a tractor-trailer filled with the belongings of three active military families. they were stolen on christmas day in stockton. inside, $100,000 worth of items. three days after the theft, investigators recovered the stolen truck and trailer in manteca. they say they tracked down the suspect in the city of livingston and found about 90% of the stolen items. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. one of the central issues we're focussing on is transportation. this includes travel on the road or mass transit. in recent weeks we've looked at the smart train in the north bay, and while it may be expanding service, ridership has
