as we join you this tuesday morning, breaking news. multiple earthquakes striking puerto rico. earthquake emergency. a magnitude 6.4 quake and multiple aftershocks rocking puerto rico forcing a hospital to evacuate knocking the island into darkness a day after a 5.8 quake destroyed homes. we're live with the latest. on the edge. a deadly stampede erupts in iran for the funeral of the top commander killed by a u.s. drone strike. tensions escalating. what one of the top iranian officials is telling martha raddatz about their planning on striking back. >> your supreme leader said it
7:01 am
must be a direct proportional response carried out in the open. >> what is the target list? martha reporting live from iran this morning. australia arrests. two dozen people now facing charges for deliberately setting fires as those massive flames scorch more than 14 million acres. this family sheltering in a movie theater for days and the new warning about the rain. why fire officials say it could actually hurt their efforts to stop the flames. ginger is back on the front lines this morning. harvey weinstein hit with new sexual assault charges as his trial begins in new york. ronan farrow, who helped break the weinstein story is here live, only on "gma." bachelor bombshell. fans stunned when hannah b. makes an appearance not once, but twice on last night's premiere. an abc news exclusive. pat sajak's daughter maggie stepping in on "wheel of fortune" overnight. how vanna white helped her as her father recovered from that emergency surgery. our interview only on "gma."
7:02 am
it was appropriate that we were hearing "we are family" because we are family. the family is all back, michael. good to see you. >> feels good to be back. happy new year to you and everybody out ere. we have a big show today. we have a lot of breaking news to get to this morning. >> we certainly do. >> we do. that iran crisis continues to spread with iran promising direct attacks against americans. the u.s. warning ships in the middle east against possible attacks and dozens killed by a crowd stampede at the funeral of iran's commander. we go live to martha raddatz in tehran in a moment. but we begin with the chaos in puerto rico. a 6.4 earthquake and multiple aftershocks rocking the island just a day after a 5.8 earthquake destroyed multiple homes and this famous landmark, the punta ventana rock formation and victor oquendo has the very latest. good morning victor.
7:03 am
>> reporter: good morning, michael. this was felt across the island, the most powerful earthquake yet followed by a swarm of at least 11 more. we just got word a 73-year-old man died in puerto rico after a wall collapsed on him. there are more injuries on the southern part of the island. we're getting a better scope of the damage with sunrise. >> power in my room here in old san juan is out. >> reporter: this morning, puerto rico engulfed in darkness. lights barely flickering at the airport in san juan. >> the power went out at the airport. >> reporter: at least one hospital forced to evacuate patients to the streets in their gurneys after a powerful 6.4 earthquake rocked the island this morning. >> oh, my god, it's shaking. >> reporter: 21-year-old nicole peralta lives in san juan and woke up to her apartment swaying back and forth. >> i could hear cracks in my house. everything started falling over. >> reporter: this comes on the heels of monday's 5.8 quake called a foreshock that shook houses off their foundations, snapped power poles and toppled
7:04 am
this home pancaking both cars parked below. it was one of the strongest quakes to hit the u.s. territory causing small landslides on this highway. drivers forced to avoid boulders during their morning commute and officials say tremors have been hitting the area since late december. the quake striking less than ten miles off the southwest coast near the major city of ponce. still so vulnerable, more than two years since hurricane maria. >> when the rain coming in, water -- >> a lot of water comes inside. >> a lot of water. >> reporter: more than 13 aftershocks followed the quake and this station on the air during one of them. the threat of a quake looms large here because puerto rico sits along the border of two tectonic plates and people need to remain on high alerts. one of the main power plants also sustained some damage.
7:05 am
the hope is that power will be restored later today but with so many powerful aftershocks there >> robin? >> there is no time table for that. victor, thank you. frightening situation. thank you. now to the escalating tensions with iran as we said. the supreme leader is prompting direct attacks against americans. this as mourners pack into the streets for the funeral of iran's top commander leading to a deadly stampede. martha raddatz is in tehran where she just spoke with iran's foreign minister. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this was the final day of the funeral procession and it turned tragic. the actual burial now postponed because of the crowds. this as the u.s. is warning ships in the gulf of possible retaliatory attacks. this morning, a deadly stampede erupting at the funeral procession of general soleimani in his hometown. reports of dozens killed. hundreds of thousands of mourners have been taking to the streets as soleimani is finally laid to rest. this image from space capturing
7:06 am
the massive crowds paying their respects to soleimani vowing revenge against the u.s. and this morning, in iran's capital, the foreign minister saying in a speech the u.s. will receive the definitive resolute response to its brazen criminal act in a place and at a time it hurts most. minister zarif who has been denied a visa to attend a u.n. meeting this week in new york, spoke to me shortly after those comments. >> iran is a very patient country. we will take our action after necessary deliberation, but i'm sure that it will be taken at a time of our choosing, not a time of the united states' choosing. >> there are reports that your supreme leader said it must be a direct proportional response carried out in the open. does that mean iran will acknowledge --
7:07 am
>> once we do it, yes, we will. we don't -- we don't carry cowardly acts of terror like the united states. >> reporter: i asked if civilians would be taken off the target list. >> iran has never put u.s. civilians on its target list to take them off its target list. we obey rules of international law. >> reporter: u.s. bases across the middle east are bracing for retaliatory attacks from the iranian regime. now the pentagon rushing to explain a leaked letter suggesting that u.s. troops are preparing to exit iraq and that the u.s. respects iraq's sovereign decision to order our departure. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff saying the letter was only an unsigned draft and should not have been released, calling it a mistake. secretary of defense mark esper saying there has been no decision for u.s. troops to
7:08 am
leave iraq despite that vote by the iraqi parliament to kick them out. the u.s. is sending those b-52s for backup in addition to 3,500 additional troops to the mideast. all in a region that president trump had vowed to get american troops out of. george? >> everyone is braced. martha, thanks very much. all these moves reverberating across washington. so let's bring in cecilia vega from the white house, mary bruce on capitol hill. and, cecilia, with all this confusing communication from the administration they are under more pressure to bring answers to congress. >> reporter: you said it. confusion, a lot of contradictions, this issue martha raised about the status of troops there in iraq and what happens with them. you've got the defense secretary now flat out contradicting the president of the united states over this issue of whether they can strike cultural sites. the president has now twice defended his ability to hit iranian cultural sites. the defense secretary esper is now saying that the united states will indeed follow the laws of armed conflict and
7:09 am
you've got this huge question of why now. the president had said that the strike on soleimani was because of an imminent threat. he did an interview with rush limbaugh yesterday where he was essentially asked why now and made no mention of this imminent threat. democrats are demanding to know more and the white house will do this briefing with top congressional leaders on capitol hill. the entire congress will get this classified briefing tomorrow. they've got to start to answer these questions the democrats are demanding. >> mary bruce, speaker pelosi wants more than answers and will try to block any new military action against iran unless the president comes to congress first. >> reporter: the speaker is trying to reassert oversight responsibility. democrats are planning to vote on a war powers resolution to limit the president's military actions regarding iran. it would prohibit military engagement with iran after 30 days unless congress explicitly approves. >> but, mary, all this is happening right in the middle of impeachment -- got a major curveball. the president's former national
7:10 am
security adviser john bolton now says he's willing to answer a subpoena from the senate. >> reporter: george, this was a huge surprise, an about-face by john bolton. if he does testify he would be the closest adviser to the president to do so. he would be a key firsthand witness. he has key knowledge and is well aware of the pressure campaign that the president and his top aides and closest allies were pushing with ukraine. he allegedly once compared it to a drug deal. now, democrats here on the hill feel this surprise offer boosts their demand that the senate trial include witnesses and it certainly is upping the pressure on republicans and leader mitch mcconnell who so far has been resisting those demands. but, george, even key republican senators who say they want to hear from players like bolton say they are backing mcconnell's strategy here to wait until midtrial to make a call on witnesses. >> meantime, cecilia, the white house being relatively quiet on this issue and the president had a fractious relationship with john bolton. >> reporter: so far no response
7:11 am
from the white house and it's worth noting that bolton gave mitch mcconnell a heads up about this, but he did not give the white house a heads up. it would be bolton's position to testify. >> cecilia vega and mary bruce, thanks so much. michael? >> all right, george. now to the historic fires devastating australia. some 130 fires are burning right now scorching more than 14 million acres of land. at least 25 people have been killed and more than 2,000 homes destroyed. ginger is there at this morning. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, michael. we've been driving around for seven hours south of sydney today. it was just endless landscape just charred and you can see there's also just hot spots everywhere like the ones i'm surrounded by and my mask. when i'm not talking to you i'm
7:12 am
wearing this because the air quality is horrible. and the smoke, look at this satellite image. the smoke from the australia bushfires has now reached all the way to south america. this morning as intense flames still scorch parts of australia, at least four people are missing and at least two dozen are dead. new south wales police charging 24 people for allegedly setting some of these bushfires. an airline passenger spotting pyrocumulus clouds over the weekend essentially fire-induced thunderstorms, lightning from those storms starting new fires. >> we believe what we saw is a column collapse that spread that fire in a number of different directions so it's an incredibly difficult and dangerous season. >> reporter: more than 14 million acres have burned. fueled in part by australia's driest and hottest year on record. so when it rained monday -- >> whoo. >> yeah! >> reporter: -- people in sydney cheered as the skies opened up. but fire officials say that the rain is actually hampering their
7:13 am
ability to back burn, that's when firefighters set fires intentionally to control the progress of the main fire. let's start with the back burning. it's so counterintuitive for people to say i see rain, that has to be good. >> not enough to extinguish it but being a real pain in the fact that we can't light the fire in front of it so it is a problem at the moment. >> reporter: one of the biggest factors in the epic fire season that still has at least two months to go, the drought. driven by something called the indian ocean dipole. or iod. it's a fluctuation of sea temperatures in the indian ocean. in its positive phase the westerly winds that would typically bring rain weaken and sometimes easterly winds form. that takes all the warm water and rain-inducing storms away from australia. >> many areas haven't seen good rains for almost two years. >> reporter: tens of thousands have been evacuated, but for some escaping the inferno has
7:14 am
not been easy. >> we have three different attempts but had to come back because there was too much smoke. >> reporter: they were forced to go to a movie theater to seek refuge. >> there was ash coming from a vent. >> reporter: a helicopter finally managing to get in and get the family out to safety. >> you know how they say you never know what you got until it's gone? the air is what i'm appreciating right now, fresh air. >> reporter: can i show you something? even when you see these hot spots, there's a threat after the fire goes through. that tree burning from the inside out, trees can easily fall. that's how people can get hurt. a lot were set intentionally, that back burning we talked about. they're trying, the firefighters, to get on top of it because by this weekend the conditions get way worse. guys? >> can you give us more of a sense of being there, this is your first time to be in australia, not the reason why you wanted to be there, but we're glad you are. give us a sense of what people are dealing with there, ginger. >> reporter: the loss.
7:15 am
i mean it's unimaginable. you think about losing everything that you have, your neighbors also lose everything they have. they have a lot of help. they have a lot of heart here in australia. i've learned that. really great people, but they're feeling like this is only the middle. they're not even close to the end and have two months left in the fire season. so there's fear and hope combined, i'd say. >> but they are hardy people, they really are. ginger, thank you. we'll get back to you a little later. now to that investigation into that horrible chain reaction crash in pennsylvania that left five people dead. the ntsb on the scene again this morning collecting evidence that could reveal exactly what sparked that massive accident. gio benitez has much more on all this. good morning, gio. >> reporter: robin, good morning. just an awful crash. ntsb investigators will be on the ground for at least a week trying to figure out what caused it. let's show you what it looked like from the air. an unbelievable picture. the ntsb saying it all started when a bus bound for cincinnati from new york lost control and slammed into three tractor trailers and a passenger car.
7:16 am
now, the bus driver and two passengers were killed. the drivers of two of the trucks also killed. more than 60 injured. now, it turns out the bus did not have seat belts because it didn't have to. it is not yet mandatory to have seat belts on all buses. michael? >> all right, sad situation, thank you so much, gio. new clues about mysterious drone sightings in the heartland. law enforcement is setting up a task force to investigate and clayton sandell has the latest. >> reporter: it's the strange mystery with many questions but few answers. >> people said it's the north koreans. i've heard it's some alien invasion, drug enforcement. >> reporter: that's another one. nightly reports of drones buzzing the night sky since mid-december over parts of colorado and nebraska. we believe we saw them too. >> also weird lights on it that do not look like an airplane. >> reporter: with no idea who might be flying them or why local and federal officials including the fbi are now launching a drone task force.
7:17 am
>> people are concerned and we're going to try to get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: overnight investigators turned this fire plane into a drone hunter armed with high-tech sensors and cameras flying a spaghetti-shaped search for hours. authorities also looking for a potential command vehicle they say might look like a box trailer with antennas or a large van. >> military personnel were here today. assured us they are not withholding information from us. >> do you believe it? >> i don't know. i really don't. >> reporter: one man thought he saw a drone go down in flames but that may have been a shooting star. >> he saw what he believed was an object land in one of the fields out there. >> reporter: that lack of hard evidence leading to the theory that all those drones might simply be airplanes or even stars. >> this is sort of a modern version of the ufo hysteria in that people think they see something and all of a sudden everybody thinks they see something but they're really seeing nothing or seeing something that's eventually going to be easily explained scientifically.
7:18 am
>> reporter: now, the sheriff tells me these drones don't appear to be doing anything illegal, but he's warning people not to do something very illegal, and that is to shoot the drones down. he is worried someone could get hurt. the truth is out there, guys. >> all right, clayton, thank you. we are following a lot of other stories this morning. harvey weinstein facing new sexual assault charges. ronan farrow is here live. and we have our exclusive of pat sajak and his daughter maggie as she fills in on "wheel of fortune." how vanna white helped her out. first, let's go over to rob. >> hey guys, we have a little winter weather coming into the east. roanoke, washington, now extending into philadelphia and winter weather advisories for a fast-moving system. slushy commute from d.c. to philly later on tonight. time for your tuesday trivia brought to you by capital one.

following right now. there is chaos in puerto rico this morning as multiple the earthquakes rocked the island. a 6.4 magnitude quake followed by multiple aftershocks forcing a church to collapse and a hospital to evacuate. this comes less than a day after that 5.8 earthquake destroyed multiple homes. also right now, iran's supreme leader is promising direct attacks against americans as massive crowds mourn the death of iran's top commander. a deadly stampede breaking out at the fine funeral in iran this morning. >> tensions escalating there. we turn to the latest for harvey weinstein. with new charges filed in los angeles, just as a trial on separate charges gets under way in new york and linsey davis is outside the manhattan courthouse where jury selection is set to begin later today. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. just yesterday harvey weinstein's defense team asked the judge if the jurors could be sequestered arguing that they could potentially be prejudiced if criminal charges were to be filed in another jurisdiction and just yesterday criminal charges were filed in another jurisdiction.
7:32 am
just hours after harvey weinstein hobbled into a new york courthouse on monday for his long-awaited criminal trial, new charges were leveled against the disgraced hollywood mogul from across the country in los angeles. the new charges involve alleged encounters with two women, one referred to as jane doe 1 accusing weinstein of raping her in her los angeles hotel room in 2013. >> she's gratified and she's relieved that these charges have been brought against weinstein for what he did to her. >> reporter: then the very next night the district attorney claims weinstein sexually assaulted another woman in a beverly hills suite. >> mr. weinstein -- >> reporter: the district attorney claims the alleged attacks occurred days before weinstein appeared here at the 2013 oscars' red carpet with his pregnant wife. >> the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then committed violent crimes against them.
7:33 am
>> reporter: it was two years ago that more than 80 women accused the former film producer of sexual harassment, assault or rape. the new york trial involves only two of the alleged victims. >> this trial is to show the jury, the state of new york and the world that there's more to this than they would like everyone to believe. >> reporter: weinstein has denied all the allegations saying any sexual relations were consensual. just outside in the shadow of the courthouse several of weinstein's accusers standing in solidarity. >> i join these other brave women who are also harmed by harvey weinstein to say, we aren't going anywhere. >> it will mean the most to the brave women testifying and to all of us silence-breakers. >> reporter: one of the women from the case in l.a. is expected to testify at this criminal trial in new york to try to help prosecutors establish that weinstein had a pattern of behavior.
7:34 am
george? >> linsey, thanks. we're here with ronan farrow, one of the first to break the story and author of "catch and kill" and host of the "catch and kill" podcast. this new york trial first. the two accusers are unnamed but you say that it's the witnesses including annabella sciorra who will be critical. >> what's striking about how the prosecutors have laid out the case is there's extra more serious charge that carries a longer potentially even life sentence of predatory sexual assault meaning, yes, the case is narrowly focused on those two but prosecutors have taken a big risk in also trying to establish this is a pattern as linsey mentioned. that means they have to sort of double prove in some of these case, prove not only the charge at issue but also this secondary witness they're bringing in someone like annabella sciorra. >> because you have these outside witnesses -- wae saw is the crowds outside the courthouse yesterday -- this is likely to get ugly both inside and outside the courtroom. >> one of the things i've reported on a lot over the years harvey weinstein has been effective at manipulating exactly this kind of a process. you've already seen in this case harvey weinstein's lawyers
7:35 am
succeed in getting one of the charges against him dropped. you've already seen them launch attacks on the witnesses in the press. there was a confrontation yesterday where prosecutors were requesting a gag order so that weinstein's lawyers would stop talking to -- >> they didn't get it. >> they didn't get it, but the judge did chastise weinstein's lawyers and say you've got to stop impugning the witnesses. that was clearly in response to a comment weinstein's lawyer said saying annabella is a good actress, implying she would be lying on the stand. >> this is not a slam dunk for prosecutors. >> it is not. this element of proving not only the charges at issue but also a course of conduct, a pattern sets a very high goal. it's atypical. more often you'd see something like a prior conviction being the predicate that establishes the pattern. here they have to prove brand-new additional fact patterns. >> meantime, while this is happening, the prosecutor in l.a. is coming out with new charges. we don't know much about those accusers. >> that's right but it appears they're taking something of a similar approach. whether or not there is an additional charge of predatory sexual assault they certainly at least will be bringing in other character-type witnesses and
7:36 am
they asked some of my sources, for instance, would they be willing to testify even though those sources didn't have incidents that took place in that jurisdiction. >> ronan farrow, thanks very much. >> good to be here. >> michael? thank you, george. >> thank you, george. now to the latest on the search for those missing idaho siblings and the mystery surrounding their mother who police say is on the run. now, her oldest son is begging her to come home. diane macedo is here with more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: michael, good morning. colby is pleading with his mother to help find her children. attorneys for lori's ex-husband says he feared for his life and the safety of his children. now he is dead, the children are gone and police say lori and her new husband are on the run. the brother of two missing idaho kids making an emotional plea. >> mom, i want to talk to you like i'm sitting across the room from you. >> reporter: that's colby ryan sending a message to his mother, lori, who they say has continued to be uncooperative after his
7:37 am
siblings went missing late last year. >> i just need this to end for tylee and j.j. and all of us. this is not okay. >> reporter: family members say lori and her current husband chad daybell say that j.j. who was adopted and has special needs was staying with a friend in arizona. police say they later learned that was a lie. authorities also say lori told some witnesses her daughter had died a year ago. and this morning, new details are calling into question lori vallow's state of mind. in a newly obtained 2019 court document lori vallow's fourth husband asked the court for custody of their child pointing to her newfound religious beliefs and the court documents say charles claims lori told him she could not trust vallow and that she would not only kill him but would destroy him financially. five months later he was killed shot by lori's brother in a dispute still being investigated and that brother who shot vallow's ex-husband also died last month.
7:38 am
this as police are also investigating the death of lori's new husband's previous wife. it's all a lot to follow but, of course, the big question right now is where are these kids and it doesn't seem anyone has an answer to that. >> cannot lose sight of that. cannot. diane, thank you. coming up our exclusive with pat sajak and his daughter maggie. she was at his side when he collapsed in pain and she filled in on "wheel of fortune" last night. going to hear from both of them next. next. l. that's why there's otezla. otezla is not a cream. it's a pill that treats plaque psoriasis differently. with otezla, 75% clearer skin is achievable. don't use if you're allergic to otezla. it may cause severe diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. otezla is associated with... ...an increased risk of depression. tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or if these feelings develop. some people taking otezla reported weight loss. your dtor should monitor your weight and may stop treatment. upper respiratory tract infection and headache may occur.
