lee, agreed saying they'll join democrats and vote to limit the president's war powers. >> what i found so distressing about that briefing what that one of the messages we received from the briefers was do not debate, do not discuss the issue of the appropriateness of further military intervention against iran. and if you do you'll be emboldening iran. i find it insulting and demeaning, not personally but to the office that each of the 100 senators in this building happens to hold. >> reporter: that senate vote isn't expected until next week but later today the house will be taking their vote on a resolution making clear to the president if he wants to go to war, he'll need congress to sign off. kenneth, janai. >> all right. serena marshall in washington this morning, thanks for joining us. a major security concern has been the threat of cyberattacks by iran. one news report claims cyberattacks have nearly tripled since the u.s. drone strike that killed an iranian general. federal, state and local government sites have been the most common targets. authorities in texas are the latest to reveal that they were targeted. new clues this morning in that mystery over what happened

to a boeing 737 that crashed in iran killing everyone on board. iran has disputed claims that the plane was shot down and now says the crew was trying to turn back to the airport when the plane crashed. this morning, new questions about what caused this boeing 737 to crash in iran less than four hours after the country launched a barrage of missiles at american targets. the ukrainian passenger jet carrying 176 people disappeared from radar minutes after taking off from tehran. >> the data to stop something like that you have to say something catastrophic. >> the debris field massive with body bags lining the street. experts say only three things could cause such a catastrophic crash, mechanical failure, a bomb or shootdown. a theory getting attention because of the military activities in the region. some point to what appear to be shrapnel holes in the wreckage

similar to what was found on malaysia airline 17 shot down over ukraine in 2014. the iranians deny they shot it down and say they have recovered the black boxes but will not provide those to u.s. thosht -- authorities or to boeing. in a statement ukrainian airlines says the pilots were trained specifically to fly in and out of tehran and given the crew's experience, error probability is minimal. we do not even consider such a chance. >> right now we don't have enough data to go one way or the other. it's a shootdown possible? yes. can i come up with mechanical failures that are possible? yes. right now we just don't have the data. >> iranian investigators say the crew never made a radio call for help. while u.s. officials may not get the black boxes, it's possible the ukrainians will share the data. now back to washington and a major development in the impeachment showdown. senator lindsey graham says the senate trial will begin next week even though house speaker nancy pelosi has not turned over the articles of impeachment yet. pelosi is demanding senate majority leader mitch mcconnell say what the trial would look

like but lindsey graham appeared on fox news last night and said it will happen soon because even some democrats want to move forward. >> you said it was urgent. if you believe it to be urgent, send it to the senate for disposition. she's losing democrats in the senate. the impeachment dam of nancy pelosi is about to crack. hat's off to mitch mcconnell for playing this very well. we'll take the trial up next week. >> mcconnell met with president trump yesterday. sources say they discussed plans for a quick impeachment trial with no witnesses. now to the wildfire disaster in australia. the u.s. state department has issued a new travel warning. >> it's calling this year's fire season one of the worst in australia's history. conditions are expected to get worse tomorrow. officials now say the fires could burn until april. new videos show animals struggling to escape from a wildlife sanctuary including these wallabies running for their lives. volunteers are stepping up to care for the ones that survived. an estimated 1 billion wild animals have perished so far. our coverage from australia continues later on "good morning america."

now back here in the u.s. san diego has become the latest school district to sue the e-cigarettemaker juul. the lawsuit claims student vaping has disrupted learning in the classroom. the district cites e-cigarette-related absences and the cost of programs to teach them about the risks of vaping. juul says it's focused on preventing underage use of its devices. time now for a look at your thursday morning weather. time-lapsed video showed a snow squall moved from philadelphia and went from sunny to snowy and reduced visibility on the roads. frigid cold has moved in. look at the windchills. it feels like single digits or the teens across much of the northeast this morning before it warms up later. looking at the national happen, today's high 62 in memphis and atlanta. minneapolis will be warmer than new york, denver, 43 and more rain and 40s for the northwest.

investigators believe fotis dulos killed jennifer in her garage last may, cleaned up then disposed of her body. the arrest warrant reveals the nanny said she had stocked the pantry with 12 rolls of toilet paper or paper towels the night before but only the next day. "the hartford courant" reports police found an ax in the garage now tested for dna. two other skiers killed in tuesday's avalanche on silver mountain. five rescued including one who spent nearly one hour under the snow and had passed out. he says he's eternally grateful to the rescuers who didn't give up. >> when they unburied me after 50 minutes, i shouldn't have been alive. i got lucky because i had the air pocket. my lips were blue and i was passed out. i just remember opening my eyes and i couldn't believe i was still here because i had already kind of made my peace. >> he says the survival training he took including lessons on how

to create an air pocket in the snow helped him stay alive. a high school student is being credited with discovering a new planet during his internship at nasa. the senior from scarsdale, new york, was analyzing variations in the brightness of stars when he discovered the planet orbiting two stars about 1,300 light-years away. nasa says the planet is seven times bigger than earth. were you that good at your internship? >> no, i was not. >> the u.s. mint is going batty with its latest design. a new quarter coming out will feature samoan fruit bats. it will promote awareness about the threatened species living in american samoa. well, coming up, some very encouraging news in the fight against cancer. first the bombshell rocking the british royal family. the announcement from harry and meghan and where they could soon be moving.

the royal family. harry and meghan will still be known as the duke and duchess of sussex. they'll keep their frogmore cottage and continue to get security detail. so what's changing? harry who is currently sixth in line to the throne could get bumped down in the line of succession, but that takes an act of parliament. the couple says they want to become financially independent, no longer accepting british taxpair money for their official duties, and they plan to move their family part time to north america touching off speculation they could move to canada or los angeles. it's not been the fairy tale once imagined. relentless and crushing coverage from the british press has taken a toll on the couple. they sued several british tabloids after the birth of their son archie. >> i will always -- i will always protect my family, and now i have a family to protect. >> reporter: and back in october, meghan admitted to itv that royal life has been overwhelming. >> not many people have asked if i'm okay, but it's a very real

thing to be going through behind the scenes. >> reporter: abc news has learned the announcement blindsided the royal family with some members reportedly, quote, deeply hurt by the decision. buckingham palace has released a statement saying, we understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through. critics say the couple wants all of the trappings of royal life without all the responsibilities but harry and meghan say in a statement, the geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter. and the couple has not said where in north america that they would live part time, but meghan has family near toronto, and her mother lives in l.a. we're now hearing from the fiance of a texas mother who was strangled after vanishing with their 2-week-old baby. police say heidi broussard's body was found last month in the trunk of a car belonging to her close friend. and the baby was found in her home. that friend was charged with
