qu killed as investigators from around the world travel to iran to search for evidence. >> reporter: this morning, iran now inviting the united states to join the investigation into what brought down that passenger jet outside tehran. this appears to be the moment the 737 was hit by a missile. the video recorded in the neighborhood of the last tracked position of the ukrainian jet liner. a missile can be seen heading upwards right before impact. the sound following seconds later. the crippled plane in this video posted by a resident outside tehran shows the aircraft apparently on fire, breaking apart and crashing three miles away. the impact also captured by cctv video which is airing on iranian media. you can see the debris streaking past the camera. the videos reinforcing western intelligence that says that iran's aircraft systems hit the plane. >> the evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an iranian air missile. >> somebody could have made a mistake. some people say it was

mechanical. i personally don't think that's even a question, personally. >> reporter: 176 people were killed. overnight, iranian officials inviting the canadian and united states national transportation safety board along with boeing to help in the investigation as the country continues to deny shooting down the jet calling it scientifically impossible, but look. this was the scene hours after the crash wednesday, and this is video from thursday morning. the crash scene cleared by the iranian government of wreckage and potential evidence, but investigators did recover the black box which could help piece together the truth. before americans can join the investigation, the state department and other government officials would need to give the green light for the ntsb to participate. now to the other story breaking overnight also affecting boeing, more company messages have been turned over to congress in connection with the investigation of the 737 max jet. that plane has been grounded after two deadly crashes. the messages revealed boeing

employees mocking the faa and discussing how to deceive regulators. one message reads, the airplane is designed by clowns, who in turn are supervised by monkeys. another reads, we have a senior leadership team that understands very little about the business, and yet are driving us to certain objectives. members of congress now want to question boeing leaders about those messages. and we turn now to president trump defending his decision to authorize the deadly drone strike that killed a top iranian general. >> he used his first campaign rally of the year last night to blast the iranian general as a bloodthirsty terrorist who was plotting to attack u.s. embassies in baghdad and beyond. >> he also took aim at house lawmakers who have voted to limit his war powers. abc's megan tevrizian is here with more. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai and kenneth. a week after president trump ordered the attack on qassem soleimani, he's now offering a new reason for killing him. at his first rally since ordering that fatal drone strike

against qassem soleimani, president trump saying, the iranian commander was planning attacks on multiple u.s. embassies. >> he was looking very seriously at our embassies and not just the embassy in baghdad, but we stopped him and we stopped him quickly and we stopped him cold. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: and secretary of state mike pompeo on fox news, echoing the president's remarks. >> no doubt there were a series of imminent attacks being plotted by qassem soleimani. we don't know precisely when, and we don't know precisely where, but it was real. >> reporter: but senators briefed on the intelligence say there was no mention of a plot to bomb an embassy. house speaker nancy pelosi saying the president's actions endangered u.s. service members and diplomats. >> the president to say, i inform you by reading my tweets. no, that's not the relationship that our founders had in mind. >> reporter: that's one of the reasons house democrats and some republicans approved a resolution requiring the president to get congressional

approval for any future military action against iran that lasts longer than 30 days. >> it is this body that needs to make that decision, and the united states senate. >> reporter: the white house calling the war powers resolution, quote, ridiculous and completely misguided. >> would you go to congress to take further military action against iran? would you seek congressional approval? >> it would all depend on the circumstance. i don't have to, and you shouldn't have to because you have to make split second decisions sometimes. you have to move very, very quickly, jon. >> reporter: and on thursday, an iranian general threatened more attacks by proxy force in iraq, lebanon, yemen and afghanistan. the trump administration says the united states remains ready, adding, the regime still poses a very real threat, janai. >> megan, thank you. as the president is on the campaign trail, back in washington, the showdown over the president's impeachment trial may be nearing an end. senate republicans expect the

trial to begin early next week. house speaker nancy pelosi has signaled that she may hand over the articles of impeachment to the senate soon even though senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is rejecting her demands to what the trial will look like. >> i'll send them over when i'm ready, and that will probably be soon. documentation, witnesses, facts, truth. that's what they're afraid of. >> mcconnell and the president are hoping to avoid calling witnesses such as former national security adviser john bolton. this morning, a brand-new milestone for the nation's vaping crisis. the epidemic has claimed its youngest victim. a 15-year-old from texas has died after reportedly vaping for only one month. the cdc now reports 57 deaths related to vaping and more than 2,600 serious lung injuries. now to the wildfire disaster in australia. new evacuations have been ordered as conditions there take a turn for the worse. temperatures are expected to soar above 104 in parts of the

he had a surge in the polls. according to fox news, he's now at 12% in nevada and 15% in south carolina. tuesday's debate will be the final one before the iowa caucuses. the connecticut man charged with killing his estranged wife is now under house arrest. fotis dulos walked out of court wearing a gps monitor. he was released on a $6 million bond which was described by husbahis lawyer as excessive for somebody with no prior record. he was forbidden from contacting the couple's five children or their nanny. the nanny is considered a key witness in the case now against dulos. another mysterious drone sighting has been reported in colorado. this time authorities say a drone flew dangerously close to a medical helicopter. in response, officials are now stepping up their investigation into who or what is behind the recent drone activity. taco bell has a new strategy

wow. we are back now with video of this volcano erupting in central mexico yesterday. that ash shooting two miles high. look at that again. authorities urge people to stay away from the base of the volcano. you can see why. no major damage was reported. we turn now to the drama unfolding at buckingham palace after prince harry and duchess meghan announced they are stepping back from royal duties. >> we're learning about a wider break within the royal family, and how prince harry openly defied the queen. >> reporter: that royal upheaval as prince harry and duchess meghan waste no time acting on their personal declaration of independence. just days after announcing they're taking a step back from royal life, the duchess is already heading back to north america, flying to canada today to reunite with the couple's son. it comes as we learn new details about the announcement that sources say left the queen

stunned. >> the queen wasn't aware that the statement was going to go out. in fact, she expressly said, do not go public with this until we manage to resolve it. >> reporter: abc news prince harry defied a direct order from the queen to keep the decision private until the family had come to an agreement about the future, and that neither william nor charles saw the statement until just ten minutes before it was sent to the media. talks about the decision began months ago with prince harry first going to his father to discuss a change of roles, but prince charles demanded a more detailed plan before moving forward. next, harry went to the queen who urged her grandson to work with his brother and father to find a solution. but that sudden break from the palace could tarnish that famous markle sparkle. >> i wish she was able to deal with that, rather than have to pull away. >> reporter: outrage already pouring in from the public over what some view as a betrayal.
