4 minutes. fremont to san jose, 13 minutes. highway 101 to cupertino, 10-minute ride. i have some updates for you because of the game tomorrow, the niners, that will be coming up shortly. >> thank you. now back to our breaking news for the peninsula. heavy police presence at a palo alto safe way. >> in the last hour we learned this is likely a robbery. >> abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live outside the store on middlefield road. amy? >> good morning. police tell me a robbery here at this safeway, and it appears the robbers went for the pharmacy. an employee here tells us they did have a gun. they did get away. police are still here but they're wrapping up their case so they've taken down the crime scene tape in the last couple of minutes so this looks like this store will be able to be accessed by customers now. it was roped off by tape since about midnight or a little after midnight is when the invasion

happened. we're told everyone is okay. no one was hurt. an unusual brazen attack in the quiet town of palo alto on the peninsula. police say they're still investigating and they're being careful with the information they're releasing saying they want to look at surveillance video. they want the pharmacy to take inventory before they report what was stolen. so they're being very guarded as they just gather their evidence and assess what they have before they release too much information. but this do want to let customers know that it looks like this safeway will be reopened and the people who did this got away. they're out of here. middlefield road safeway is where this happened. looks like things will be returning back to normal. a scary situation for the employees here. reporting live in palo alto, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you for the update. now on to much happier news,

retired may of last year. the interim chief has been leading the department since then. abc7 news devoted a week to covering b.a.r.t. in our commitment to covering a better bay area. building a better b.a.r.t. is part of building a better bay area. at the live desk, bay area billionaire tom steyer qualified for the presidential debate in iowa, he will join joe biden, elizabeth warren, amy klobuchar and pete buttigieg. he hit pole requirements in south carolina and nevada. a fox news poll found steyer polled 12% in nevada and 15% in south carolina. next tuesday's debate comes weeks ahead of the february 3rd iowa caucus. a fresno teen is sharing his survival story after he got stranded in the snowy utah

plalo alto, police are confirmig they're investigating a robbery at the safe way store on middle field road it looks like robbers tried to get into the pharmacy with a gun. they got away. number two, the u.s. and boeing will be joining the investigation into what brought down the ukrainian jetliner that crashed killing all 176 people on board. iran continues to deny shooting down the jet. investigators recovered the black box which could help piece together what happened. number three, governor newsom will announce his proposed state budget this morning. he plans to ask lawmakers to set aside more than 1$1.4 billion. that money would address issues like helping the homeless, immigrants and preparing for natural disasters. number four, an oakland assembly member is researching the possibility of adding a bus-only lane on the bay bridge. he has directed staff to look at legislative solutions for a bus-only lane on the bridge. no need to grab the umbrella this morning. you probably need to grab the

ice skrcraper in the deepest valleys, another fast moving storm tonight with limited moisture moving north to south acro across our neighbors. a 1 on our storm impact scale. number six, i'm here with good news. traffic is smooth across the board. not getting anything in from the chp, metering lights are not on. it's 5:17. the 49ers are holding a special fan event today ahead of tomorrow's first ever playoff game at levis stadium. a pair of tickets for the game are being raffled off every 30 minutes between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in red lot one outside levis stadium. the niners battle the vikings tomorrow at 1:35. cleaning up our streets is an easy way to jump start our effort to building a better bay area. recology says every day in san francisco it collects 1,000 tons of trash that ends up in the landfill.

650 tons into the blue bins, 800 tons into the green bins. you have seen the videos, you probably have seen it in person, trash piling up on the streets and around the garbage can. >> you might remember this video taken by dan ashley, it showed what happens. trash strewn across the street right next to dumpsters. so now the city is making a plan to fix this problem. sf supervisors held a hearing yesterday to nail down a city-wide trash collection plan that everyone can hopefully follow. one main disagreement is if more trash cans would help or if they have, in fact, become the main sources for trash being thrown around. >> our perspective, the biggest issue is bad behavior. we see lots of illegal dumping in cans, lots of pilfering through cans. >> i don't think the cans themselves are causing the illegal dumping. i don't think it's -- it stops it when you take them away.

>> the city has been testing new smart trash bins with automatic locks. supervisor matt haney says so far they appear to it be a success as the city works for other solutions. ending homelessness is a major focus in our effort to build a better area. linda hopkins will host a commity meeting to discuss the city's response to the joe rodata trail. three large houses will be purchased to house some of the homeless people. the meeting will be held at the rosen library on sebastopol road at 6:00 p.m. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area, you can share them by joining our group on facebook. new details in boeing's 737 max investigation. internal emails between boeing employees involved with the plane's development appear to mock regulators. boeing released the emails to the faa and congressional investigators. so one employee said that the max 737 is "designed by clowns,

supervised by monkeys." after complaining about the flight management computer. the company calls the emails completely unacceptable. boeing has been under scrutiny since the max was grounded last march after two deadly crashes that killed 346 people. all right. the this is the story of the week. meghan markle is in canada this morning. >> this after she and prince harry announced they plan to step back as senior members of the royal family. the harry is still in the uk, that is where queen elizabeth is leading crisis talks with charles and william. prince harry defied a direct order from the queen to keep discussions private until the family had come to an agreemnt about the future. the family was not ready for the couple to make that announcement to the world. >> those discussions were in early phases, so the royal family was not prepared and not ready to have to announce the outcome of what their new roles might be, but clearly the sussexes wanted to press on and

richmond-san rafael bridge right now, live look here, you can see a smooth ride as people head towards the toll plaza. and here are our drive times before we get there, a commuter alert. the manzanita park and ride, the lower half of the lot will be closed due to nightly high tide flooding. we've been heari ing mike all morning talking about the king tides. 35-minute from tracy to dublin. breaking news this morning, police are on the scene at a palo alto safeway. >> an employee says someone with a gun tried to rob the pharmacy overnight. this is happening at the store on middle field road. amy hollyfield is there with the latest information. > we just interviewed a safeway employee who was here when the attackers stormed in. he says they were armed and they went towards the pharmacy. he is okay, he described to us what happened. >> just three guys came and got

to the pharmacy, that's that's a >> did they have a gun? > yeah, they had a gun. mm-hmm. >> did they say anything? are you okay? >> yeah, i'm -- mm-hmm. >> did they threaten anybody else with the gun? >> well, they just tell me to get down on the floor. yeah. >> did you? >> yeah. >> here's how they busted into the pharmacy which was closed at the time. they broke the window in that door. there were reports that a gun was fired. mauricio says he doesn't think they fired the gun. police say it could have been the loud sound of the breaking glass. they're investigating whether that gun was fired and what was stolen. they say they want to look at srveillance video and they want to wait until the employees take inventory of what is missing. the logical conclusion is they got away with prescription

pills. this happened after midnight. this is on middle field road in palo alto. they closed off the parking lot this morning while they were investigating. they didn't reopen it until 5:00. this store is open now. the employees are all okay. the men did get away. no arrests have been made. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> what a scary night for those employees. thanks for that information. this morning an east bay mother is recovering from a brutal attack on campus of her daughter's high school. >> it happened tuesday morning at james logan high school in union city. her family says she was jumped and beaten by two teenage girls on tuesday morning. the parents say one of the girls had been bullying their 16-year-old daughter. so the mother and daughter were at the school hoping to complain to the principal, but then were confronted by the teens before they got through the front door. >> translator: i just wanted to

go inside the office and talk to the principal, you would never imagine a kid to hit an adult. >> police arrested one of the teens, charged her with battery. the school sent an email to parents saying in part we're investigating and following up on this incident working directly with the union city police department and taking disciplinary actions. we believe this incident to be between two logan sdents and does not appear to involve any other logan students. >> the new year's eve death of a man trying to stop a laptop ap theft is driving a gofundme chain to beef up security in the montcla montclair village. supporters say something has to be done to reverse the crime trend and to secure the neighborhood. a 34-year-old died after being dragged by a car as he tried to stop two men from stealing his laptop. burglars got away with more than $83,000 of watches and

jewelry from the bloomingdale's. this happened tuesday morning. you can see the three suspects entering the store after breaking a glass door with a rock. at least two of them headed for the display cases which they also smashed with rocks. they grabbed the stuff and took off in a getaway car. now detectives are looking into whether this could be linked to similar crimes in the area. at the live desk, iran invited the u.s. and boeing to join the investigation into what brought down the ukrainian jetliner that crashed killing all 176 people on board. video shows or appears to show the moment the plane was hit by a missile. the impact caused debris to streak past the camera after the plane was hit. the video reinforces western intelligence that says iran's anti-aircraft systems hit the plane. >> the evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an iranian surface-to-air missile. >> somebody could have made a mistake.

some people say it was mechanical. i personally don't think that's even a question. >> iranian officials continue to deny shooting down the jet calling it "scientifically impossible." the iranian government cleared the scene of all wreckage and potential evidence just one day after the crash. investigators did recover the black box, which could help piece together exactly what happened here. happening today, help for immigrants, the homeless and preparing for natural disasters. those are some items that governor newsom is expected to announce in his proposed state budget. the governor is planning to ask lawmakers to set aside 1$1.4 billion for a variety of issues. and that money would help get homeless californians off the streets, cover full health benefits for immigrants and new technology to prepare for wildfires and earthquakes. governor newsom will discuss his budget at 10:30. the developers of the a.c.t. tests is warning that doing away
