>> emergency meeting in santa rosa to deal with a growing homeless crisis. >> in san francisco, one of the last all girls catholic high schools announce it will be closing. we spoke to several parents and students who are wondering what to do next. excitement from the south bay just a few hours from the biggest 9ers came in years. plus, i'll have the playoff forecast and a look at your weekend weather. abc 7 news at 11 starts right now. >> now, from abc 7 live breaking news. >> and that breaking news, iran admits that its military quote unintentionally shot down that ukrainian jet liner. all 176 people on board died. >> in a statement released tonight, they blamed human error for the shootdown.

iran denied for several days. >> went down on the outskirts of tehran just hours after iran launched missiles at u.s. forces. >> people who live there describe the homeless crisis as exploding. >> yeah. an machine a mile long homeless encampent, solutions were discussed tonight. but as abc 7 news reporter explains, neighbors are clearly frustrated. >> frustrated santa rosa neighbors sounding off at this emergency town hall meeting. most of these folks live now the infamous joe radoda trail, that's become a homeless tent city stretching more than a mile long. >> i'm scared to walk in my neighborhood. >> how about all you supervisors come live in our shoes for a month? >> supervisor linda hopkins made no excuses. >> i would like to start off by talking about something that isn't easy. and that is failure. >> hopkins says the county,

city, and state have failed in this homeless crisis. supervisors recently voted to spend $12 million to help relocate more than 200 homeless individuals. >> we are moving forward with clearing the trail by the end of the month. we are going to be standing up an emergency shelter that the board of supervisors will vote on the location this tuesday. >> sonoma county also looking at buying this house on davis street and two others and turning them into homeless shelters. some are concerned about establishing shelters in existing neighborhoods. but others say it's the best solution out there so far. louise richardson says shelter first. >> to me, shelter first means get people off the ground. get them into something that has a door that closes. >> the county may establish one shelter here near the administration building. the second location will be decided next week. in santa rosa, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> we want to hear your understands about building a

better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. >> new developments tonight. san francisco new district attorney is putting his mark on the office by firing several prosecutors. sworn in on wednesday, he has pledged to transform the way the city prosecutes cases focusing on a method he calls restorative justice. at least six attorneys were fired today, including several managers in the felony office. he released a statement to abc 7 news saying, quote, i had to make difficult staffing decisions today in order to put in place a management team that will help me accomplish the work i am committed to do for san francisco. >> one of the last all-girl catholic high schools in san francisco is closing its doors at the end of this school year. marci high school made the surprising announcement in an e-mail tonight. abc 7 news is live from mercy high school with those details. >> this was not the e-mail any parents and teachers at this high school expected today. this school has been running for

the last 68 years. this year will be its last. >> tonight these freshman, sophomores, and juniors have one thing in common. uncertainty. >> where are we going to go? >> questions that arose after mercy high school announced via e-mail this independent catholic high school sponsored by the sisters of mercy for the last 68 years will close this june. >> today, even i was discussing like what classes i would take in my senior year and things like that. >> several parents said they felt blindsided. >> we have to look for alternative options. mercy has offered to help in -- with transitions to other schools. >> the school's basketball coach learned about the news at the same time everyone else did. >> has the school reached out to you as a coach directly at all? >> no, they have not. i think the decision was made and they spoke with their folks internally. >> mercy high school explained in an e-mail saying, in part, rising operating expenses have made it impossible for the school to maintain financial

stability. the basic demographics and economics in san francisco have changed and many families can no longer afford to live in the city and pay tuition on top of the cost of living. but this grad believes this is part of a bigger bay area crisis. >> in this whole tornado that is causing things like mercy high school to close and people are just being pushed out. they just can't afford it. >> do you think it was ever going to happen to your school? >> never. never. >> now, according to several parents that we spoke to today, mercy high school will hold a meeting tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. to speak about the closure, as well as options for those students. in san francisco, louise pena. >> in tonight's headlines, a judge rules that a brook of home ms mothers who have been living in a vacant west oakland home must leave the property. >> dominique walker formed the group moms for housing when she and her two children moved into the empty house on magnolia street last november. and other families joined her.

but today, a judge gave them five days to leave before the sheriff kicks them out. the moms for housing say the fight has just begun. >> we are here. and we're not leaving. we are not going to stop fighting until all unhoused folks that want housing have shelter. it is a basic human need and it's a basic human right. >> introduced new police chief ed alvarez today. comes a day after the board improved an ambassador plan. unarmed officers trained in deescalation will patrol trains. >> that's going to give he 22 more bodies, 22 more eyes and ears that are going to increase presence and safety in our system. >> you can see today's top headlines anytime on our abc 7 news app. >> all right. moving on. 49ers fan excitement is reaching a fevered pitch tonight. >> yeah. the nfc divisional round playoff game kicks off tomorrow afternoon against the minnesota

this is an incredible story. a man and a woman are accused of luring thieves on to their property and then beating them with baseball bats. police say the pair used an unsecure bike as bait to entice these would be thieves. vanessa from our sister station has the story. >> individual taking the bike that was set out there to be stolen. >> they look like your typical caught on camera moments. >> it shows him walking off with the bike. >> thieves taking advantage of a crime of opportunity. >> both subjects are running out bats. >> but as police lieutenant shows us, it's what the homeowners did next that landed them in jail. >> they would run out. chase down that subject and assault that subject and recover their bike. but they would never call us. >> investigators say former theft victims corey kurnut and savannah lured thieves to their home with an unattended bike to make matters into their own

hands. >> they're running down the street yelling and getting into a fight in the middle of the night, which would obviously wake the neighbors up. you see the bike sitting there. >> the lieutenant says the department was first alerted to the bike bait videos. investigators say there are at least four victims who were beaten with aluminum bats. but there could approximate more. >> there are also reluctant victims. so they're not wanting to come talk to us all the time either or come out and say, yeah, i was stealing a bike and i got assaulted. >> he says when it comes to enforcing the law, leave it to the professionals. >> abc 7 news. >> viral surveillance video out of redding led to the arrest of an animal abuse suspect. we want to warn our viewers this video may be disturbing to you. the video shows the woman approaching the house with her dog. the homeowner tells her to leave. then the woman begins hitting the dog and biting it several times. the footage went viral and a tipster led investigators to the suspect in shasta lake city

where they made the arrest. the dog is now safe with the haven humane society. >> yosemite national park has been hit with an outbreak of stomach illness. at least a dozen people have reported getting sick. federal health officials are now conducting inspections of the park's food service facilities, including the iconic hotel. they say it's too early to identify what the illness is or how it spread. no dining facilities have been closed. >> in the east bay alameda county department rescued a horse that fell into a ravine. crews were called out before 10:00 a.m. today. it took about an hour to free the horse that was wedged into the ravine 15 feet below. the horse was turned over to its owner and a veterinarian. >> a regular visitor to the area's coastline made a return appearance this morning. >> a number of citizen scientists grabbed cameras to document the tides. say the highest level reached nearly 7 feet today.

just a really cool time lapse of the moon coming up. it is a full moon tonight and in case you're wondering where the rain is, it's coming. ukia has already reported a few drops. right now on live doppler 7, nothing here locally. but while you're sleeping, the roads will get damp in a little bit. temperatures now in the 40s, 50s. look at this view from sutra tower looking at city hall all decked out in the 9ers colors. it is getting breezy out there as well. showers spread overnight tonight. minor flooding is possible. and we are tracking a series of storms for next week. it's a level 1 for overnight hours going into tomorrow morning. northwesterly winds pick up tomorrow. watch out for those large breaking waves. hour by hour forecast 11:30 tonight. this front is going to fizzle so we're not expecting a whole lot around 4:00 a.m., you will see some spot why showers in the east bay, south bay. as we head into 6:00 a.m., very spotty in nature once again. 8:00 a.m., mainly along the

coastline. and then 9:00 as well becoming isolated as we head towards the late morning hours. then it's done before 11:00 a.m. now, in terms of rainfall, totals a few hundred inch. the storm certainly kicking up the swells. high surf advisory 9:00 a.m. tomorrow to 3:00 p.m. sunday. those breakers could be between 20 to 24 feet so watch out, especially if you are a surfer or a swimmer. first thing in the morning, temperatures 30s to the 50s, the not freezing cold like it was this morning. you will need umbrellas for early part of the day. but it is going to be a breezy, cool one. upper 40s to the upper 50s. ak you weather seven-day forecast. sunday night, a chance of showers in the north bay. everyone has a chance monday night with a level 1 system as we head into wednesday night, it's a stronger system. thursday's going to be the wet, windy level 2 storm. colder. snow levels in the hills down to
