>> reporter: well, dion, aer we are on magnolia street. several moms moved into this house across the street in the middle of november they don't own and they don't have a a right to. clearly they have some sort of utilities working, but the signs say moms for housing. four vacant homes for each homeless person in oakland. they are part of a new advocacy group called moms for housing. and on friday, an alameda county judge ruled the families must leave the property within five days or they will get evicted. now, the firm that owns the house called wedge wood properties, they're down in l.a., offered to pay for movers and to pay catholic charities to provide shelter and assistance to the moms for two months. but the mothers called the offer an insult and they posted on twitter that the moms and the community behind us will not leave the property, which is exactly what the alameda county sheriff's office is worried about. i spoke to sergeant ray kelly

tonight who says that they will be enforcing the eviction order asman dated by the court. but they really want everything to remain peaceful so they've also reached out to the group to help and to try and come up with a nonconfrontational resolution. but so far the moms have declined their offer. now, i have seen people in the house. we've knocked on the door. i saw one woman walk up to the front door. they clearly do not want to speak to us tonight, but we have spoken to their neighbors and their neighbors are sympathetic to their situation. that they're moms trying to provide housing for their children, but they are also concerned about what's going to happen this week with the eviction, with all of the attention, and, of course, most importantly, the safety of the children in the house. after this we're going to speak to the representative for the property owner, hear what he has to say about all of that and we will have everything right here on abc7 at 11:00. for now that is the latest live here in oakland. i'm kate larson, abc7 news. back to you. >> and we are looking forward to it. kate, thanks. abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area, and

one place we have been looking at a lot lately is the trail in santa rosa. there is a homeless camp that stretches for about a mile there and there is ongoing a search for solutions. there may be a renewed urgency to come up with a shelter to put the people living along the trail somewhere. overnight there was a fire at the encampment and the santa rosa democrat reports this is the third fire there in two months. it was out within 20 minutes and o one was hurt, but just a s and couple of weeks ago a propane tank exploded along the trail. now, two other issues we're looking at in building a better bay area, housing and education. and they are coming together in napa. the napa valley unified school district is considering selling two schools to generate nearly $10 million. the schools are yountville elementary school and mount george elementary. both kam pugses are supposed to close this summer according to the napa valley register. the money would help the district's budget crunch. the properties could be developed into housing or even a

vineyard. we do want too hear your ideas about building a better bay area. you can share them on a better bay area group on facebook. >> a oakland man is recovering after he was shot and robbed of his notebook on friday. a man was killed after a theft of his notebook in clairmont neighborhood. abc7 news's cornell bernard. >> somebody was screaming i don't want to die like this. >> reporter: oakland resident heard those cries or help after hearing a single gunshot friday night. he found a man at this bus shelter at 69th and adoline streets. he is a former paramedic and helped the man until first responders arrived. >> what's his name? 2012 macbook pro silver. description is a male wearing ace mask.

>> he was saying he was on his laptop waiting for the bus. somebody came up in a mask, asked him for his laptop, and either before he could comply or i'm not sure if he refused, they shot him. >> the customer come run in here. somebody just got shot. >> reporter: he works at stanford market across the street. he says the victim is one of his customers. >> i think music, beats, i think and the laptop, so it's just tragedy. what happened to him, it's wrong. >> reporter: it's the second stole inlaptop theft in oakland that's turned violent in recent weeks. on new year's eve 34-year-old was killed at a montclair starbucks trying to get his stolen laptop back. two suspects were arrested for the crime. >> everybody should be concerned about their safety no matter what neighborhood they live in. >> reporter: oakland city council man dan says violent crime has increased in recent months. he's pushing for more police officers to be hired. >> if we don't have enough officers, we won't have enough officers doing the investigations of those serious crimes. >> reporter: police say the victim from friday's laptop

theft is recovering in the hospital. in oakland, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> also in the east bay, hayward police are investigating that city's first homicide of the year. it happened just before 5:30 this morning near osage avenue and hesse drive. officers say they found a man with gunshot wounds. the man was declared dead at the scene. his identity is not being released until family can be notified. >> california wildfire victims could be on the hook for billions of dollars owed to the federal government by pg&e. fema wants the utility to cover the cost of the government's response to the wildfires of 2015, '17 and '18. but if pg&e can't pay, the agency told the "san francisco chronicle" that it would bill the victims for the nearly $4 billion. that money would come out of the $11 billion settlement pg&e reached with the victims. fema says it doesn't want to go after the victims, but says it is compelled to do so. a judge is expected to consider the issue next month.

meanwhile, sonoma county is looking to modernize its way of dealing with wildfires through a ballot measure. in march voters will be asked to vote on measure g. it is a sales tax. if passed, it is expected to generate more than $50 million each year and would help with hiring of about 200 more firefighters. however, the press democrat reports only agencies that are working to consolidate with others would be able to get a slice of the money. that measure requires a two-thirds majority in order to pass. >> in san francisco, a muni light rail train hit and killed a man early this morning at a bus stop in visitacion valley. police say the train was stopped at a light and the man was sitting on the device that connects two train cars. he fell under the second car of the train when it began moving again. the mta says the operator did not know the train had struck the man. another operator reported the body on the tracks. mta says this is the first incident of its kind in the last two years. >> governor newsome's budget

proposal announced friday includes plans to buy a huge cattle ranch in the bay area and turn it into a park. the property is located in this area southeast of livermore. i's near the del valle regional park. it's 80 square miles which would make it one of the largest new parks in decades. two southern california sisters put it on the market in july of last year for $72 million. so far, though, no takers. if approved, the state would put up 20 million, another $30 million would come from conservation groups. >> well, the 49ers will be playing next sunday for a shot at the super bowl. they'll be at home and we know it was a pricey ticket for yesterday's playoff game. so how much can you expect to spend next weekend? >> and while we're talking about the 49ers, is one of their key assistants staying or going to become a head coach? the big update on his future. >> the sir francis drake hotel in san francisco is home to one of the city's legendary people. we're there as the beloved door man retires.

a legendary figure who is part of the fabric of san francisco is retiring today. the legendary tom sweeney has been door man at the sir francis drake hotel at union square the last 43 years. today is his last day on the job. it seemed like everybody stopped by to greet him and wish him well. firefighters, police officers, muni operators, tourists and locals. he spent most of the day looking back at his career and the memorable moments that happened

tonight under a mixture of stars and clouds, not quite as cold tonight as we were last night. that cloud cover kind of slows the cooling process, acts like a blanket this time of year. 40, 60 overnight low in san francisco. dropped to about 33 in san jose. chilly 39 in redwood city to get you out the door tomorrow morning. the morn sergio garcia dry, much of the day, in fact, is dry. it's tomorrow night that would bring back the storm impact scale. it is a level 1 light system on our monday night. we'll track scattered showers. rainfall is really light. less than a 10th of an inch. the winds anywhere from 10 to 25 miles per hour. so future weather tomorrow morning, it is quiet. the early afternoon you'll find fair amount of cloud cover. so partly sunny skies throughout monday afternoon. then monday night, that is when we track the wet weather alerter first in the north bay. this is 6:30 in the evening on our monday night. light showers around santa rosa and clover dale. as the evening goes on, we do expect showers to move south. so by 10:00, 11:00 p.m., they

are working through san francisco and oakland. light showers, might have a down pier here and there, a quick moving system. tuesday morning it is moving out of here. really it's not a huge issue. if you're out and about late tomorrow night you'll encounter some drops. partly sunny skies, cool but seasonable day for january numbers. 355 in san rafael. 57 in antioch. well, fast forward, though, into thursday morning because a potent storm looks to move through the bay area. this is a level 2 moderate storm here early thursday morning with steady rain, scattered downpours, rainfall. pretty good for this time of year. half of an inch to an inch. some spots could see more than an inch. wind gusts 20 to 40 miles pore hour. it will be breezy. wednesday night we'll see the rain arriving light in nature first in the north bay, but it's early thursday morning -- this is 5:00 a.m. thursday morning --. we're tracking the showers, those scattered downpours. the thursday morning commute is going to be very messy. rainfall potential as we round out the storm wednesday into

job with san francisco. sala's defense dominated the vikings yesterday. according to reports, cleveland plan to hire stafansky according to espn sources. he is set to become the fifth browns head coach since 2012. that could be good news for the niners. sala will probably be head coach one day. the game was crazy. patrick mahomes and the chiefs hosting them in houston. punt, lonnie johnson, jr. that's major, get into end zone. picks it up. houston was up 24 to nothing. patrick mahomes had a pep talk on the side lines. it worked. he throws for four touchdowns in the second quarter. using the second quarter in the postseason game to ever do that. three of them go to his tight end travis kelsey. you remember he threw two touchdown. they become the first team to trail by 24 and then lead at the half. kansas city
