[ chanting ] protests in the streets of iran over the shootdown of that passenger jet. overnight, thousands of iranians flooding the streets for a second day. the associated press showing tear gas hurled at crowds with video and witness accounts of protesters beaten and live ammunition fired. iran denying the use of live ammunition. the denial coming after the iranian government finally admitted that its military forces accidently shot down a ukrainian commercial aircraft, killing all 176 passengers on board. this after three days of claiming mechanical errors brought down the plane. the iranian government now saying they mistook the passenger jet for an incoming missile just hours after iran targeted american-backed bases in iraq in retaliation for the

u.s. killing qassem soleimani, a top iranian general. iranian president hassan rouhani tweeting, armed forces internal investigation has concluded that regrettably missiles fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the plane. in a televised speech even hardliners apologizing. [speaking foreign language] the commander in charge saying he wished he had been on that plane himself so he wouldn't feel so ashamed in front of his nation adding, quote, we never thought we would harm our own people. in the aftermath of soleimani's death, iranians were united, angrily protesting against the united states drone strike on soleimani. now iran's unity shattered. iranian protesters ripping down posters of soleimani, the slain military leader, and some protesters refusing to trample the image of an american flag. overnight, president donald trump supporting the new

protests tweeting a warning in english and farsi to the leaders of iran, do not kill your protesters. and this morning, hardliners have started threatening people from holding large scale funerals where slogans against the iranian regime might be shouted. george? >> okay, martha. welcome back from iran. we go to the white house now where the president and his team are facing new questions about the intelligence behind his strike on iran's top commander. and our latest abc news/ipsos poll shows more than half the country disapproves of how the president is handling iran. we want to bring in our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega. cecel cecelia, we now have seen the president's own defense secretary saying he hasn't seen the evidence behind trump's claim that soleimani was targeting four u.s. embassies. >> reporter: exactly, george. this started on friday when president trump told fox news that he believed the iranians were going to target those four american embassies and then his own defense secretary mark

esper went on tv and basically said he never saw such a threat. it was a head scratcher because the secretary then attempted to not outright contradict the president saying that basically the president's interpretation of the intelligence that led to this attack was correct. it is just the latest example -- you know this -- of all the mixed messaging over the origins on this strike of soleimani, and george, certainly it's going to play into democrats' and even some republicans' criticism of the origins of this. they say they want to see evidence this strike was imminent as the administration has suggested. >> and cecelia, this is happening as the impeachment trial is set to begin this week. house speaker nancy pelosi saying she's going to send the articles of impeachment over. the president has been all over the map on what he wants on witnesses and a trial, and he seems to be calling for a dismissal which is not mitch mcconnell's plan. >> reporter: yeah, george. president trump very frustrated headed into this.

he sent a number of tweets on impeachment over the weekend. one on hand saying he would like to see more witnesses called when the senate trial starts including suting that one of the witnesses might be nancy pelosi herself. then he suggested that the republican-controlled senate should out right dismiss this case. it doesn't appear though, george, that the republicans have the support to do that. >> thanks very much. t.j.? we turn to the powerful storms that are reminiscent of something we're used to seeing in the springtime. they slammed the south with tornadoes, damaging winds and flooding. power has been knocked out to thousands of people, and at least 12 people have been killed. our kaylee hartung is in louisiana for us where there was an ef-2 tornado that cut a 40-mile path of destruction. hello, kaylee. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. that's right. this is what it looks like when an ef-2 tornado rips through your home. jerry and mary sue franks were killed here when their home was torn from its foundation more than 200 feet from where i'm standing.

take a look at this wide angle. 135-mile-per-hour winds shredding this home to pieces, you see it around me. a lifetime of memories scattered across this vast area. this morning, residents waking up to more destruction after two tornadoes touched down in the middle of the night. residents reeling from the devastating tornadoes across the u.s. at least 12 people were killed during the severe weekend storms spanning from texas to ohio. >> this is a fence on top of a home. >> reporter: in ohio, two tornadoes, forceful winds uprooting this tree and ripping out the sidewalk underneath it. the strong winds sending this building's rooftop to the ground, the crushed debris blocking the entrance way as firefighters work to clear the streets below. and in alabama, a tornado tormenting pickens county leaving three dead. in louisiana, tornado damage toppling trees, uprooting hundreds. the destruction stretching for miles.

the ef-2 tornado eradicating homes, tossing this mobile home from its foundation, killing an elderly couple inside. >> to wake up and see the news this morning it was really sad. >> reporter: in south carolina, tornado damage ripping this school's roof right off. brick and cement debris litter the lawn. the wind smashing these buses into each other. the top of these bleachers torn away. the franks family spent the weekend digging through mud and debris trying to salvage what they could. a few precious family photos were found. now as the sun comes up, that community continues to clean up the mess and heal. robin? >> think of everybody impacted. all right, kaylee, thank you. quite a contrast on the east coast and northeast experiencing record warm temperature. ginger is here with the latest on that. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you. it felt like march and it looked like march with those severe storms. record warmth. dozens of daily records that were broken, and an all-time january heat from boston to naples. we have never seen that type of heat in recorded history in a couple of these cities. so just noting that, you know

this is more reminiscent of late february, early march. we have never had 466 severe storm reports in january on a day like we did yesterday at least going back to 2000 or probably ever. we'll verify that. but look at that. that was over the weekend, more than 700 damaging wind, hail and tornado reports. guys? >> that is some map. ginger, thanks very much. we turn now to the race for the white house. just three weeks from the caucuses in iowa and a new poll puts bernie sanders in the lead for the first time. a tight four-way race and anyone can still win. linsey davis is here. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. four years ago, bernie sanders narrowly lost the iowa caucuses to hillary clinton. and now in 2020, the vermont senator is leading the iowa poll which suggests more than 20% of likely caucus-goers say sanders is their top pick for president. this morning, bernie sanders is on top in iowa leading the pack

"poll. in a new "des moines register "poll. >> i'm absolutely confident if there is a large voter turnout that we are going to win. >> reporter: with three weeks to go before the caucuses, this tight race is still up for grabs. ♪ pete buttigieg topped the same iowa poll just a few months ago, but is now jockeying for position in a crowded field choosing not to go after sanders overnight. >> iowa, i believe you are going to make me the nominee, and the next president of the united states. >> reporter: but elizabeth warren second in that poll, pulling no punches against the vermont senator, responding to a report saying his campaign volunteers are trying to persuade voters that she is a candidate of the elite. >> i was disappointed to hear that bernie is sending his volunteers out to trash me. >> reporter: sanders denies any knowledge of the move by his campaign. >> have i ever said one negative word about elizabeth warren? >> reporter: but instead of touting his standing as the front-runner in the new poll, sanders is making the pitch he's best suited to take down the candidate democrats want to beat in november.

>> we are the strongest campaign to defeat donald trump. >> reporter: sanders has caught the attention of president trump. over the weekend trump tweeted, wow, crazy bernie sanders is surging in the polls looking very good against his opponents in the do nothing party. what does that mean? stay tuned. sanders quickly fired back saying, this means you're going to lose. as you say it's a jump ball. pete buttigieg, elizabeth warren, joe biden neck and neck. >> they're all debating tomorrow night. linsey, thanks very much. t.j.? we need to turn to that volcano eruption near the capital of the philippines that has forced tens of thousands of people to flee. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell with the latest. good morning to you, ian. >> reporter: hey, t.j. this morning, the taal volcano just over 40 miles south of manila, spewing red hot lava and ash across a wide area. incredible images coming in of plumes of ash and steam as high as nine miles above the crater.

the intense eruptions even causing volcanic lightning. people have been forced from their homes and that could grow to 300,000 or more in the coming days with the local authorities declaring a state of calamity. so far, no reports of injuries or deaths, but people are being told to stay indoors, and the major worry this morning. the government has raised the alert status to level 4 which means a hazardous explosive eruption within hours or days with more than 140 earthquakes now recorded. robin? >> ian, thank you. now back here at home, the quest for the super bowl. the final four now set after the chiefs made that historic comeback, and the packers pulled off a big win last night joining the titans and the 49ers. paula faris is here with that. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. can we talk about the kansas city chiefs for a second? they were down 24-0 early in this game. it looked like it was going to be an absolute route. now if you stopped watching the game, like many fans did, some even left the game, well, you missed one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history.

i hope not because this has been fun to watch. 8:00 tomorrow, 7:00 central here on abc. >> game on. we have the top headlines we're following this morning. violent protests erupting in iran as people take to the streets there to take on the regime after they admitted they accidentally shot down that passenger plane, killing all 176 people on board. and as people of the heartland begin to recover from those devastating and deadly tornados, a major storm is moving into the west bringing heavy snow, cold and rain and barreling across the country. i want you to take a look at this as those wildfires rage across australia. the government is now air dropping vegetables to help the animals struggling to find food using helicopters and airplanes to provide more than 4,000 pounds of carrots, sweet potatoes and more. >> it is needed down there. we turn now to the royal crisis. an emergency summit has been called by the queen. prince charles, william and harry will attend at sandringham to meet with her this morning. meghan will join by phone. james longman is there with the latest. good morning, james.

>> reporter: good morning, george. this is it. the sandringham summit some are calling it. the first time harry will meet face to face with the queen since his and meghan's decision to step back at senior royals. charles and william will also be here. it's thought meghan is going to call in from canada. we could be seeing a redefinition of what it means to be royal. this morning, an unprecedented royal summit. the queen calling an emergency meeting with william, charles and harry here in sandringham to talk about next steps after harry's bombshell announcement that he and his wife, meghan, will be stepping back from their duties as senior royals. meghan flew back to canada to be back with archie, and is believed to be joining them by phone. >> this is the first time that all four have come together in the same room. people say harry is torn. for him, the most important thing is his family. for the couple, it's about preserving their mental health, remaining happy and being able to work in an environment that suits them best.

>> reporter: it's thought the royal meeting will cover everything from harry and meghan's titles to security and any financial deals the couple is likely to make in order to become financially independent. >> in terms of earning money, they will be looking at the obamas and how their life was for financial independence when they moved out of the white house through clever speaking engagements and maybe even a book. that's how harry and meghan plan to make their money moving forward. >> reporter: harry has reached out to a friend about his state of mind. prince william saying, i've put my arm around my brother all of our lives and i can't do that anymore. i'm sad about that. rumors of unrest between the brothers have swelled for months. harry opening up about reports of a rift in a documentary, "harry and meghan: an african journey" last october. >> how much of that is true? >> um, you know, stuff -- stuff happens, but look, we're brothers. we'll always be brothers. >> reporter: meghan also opening up about struggling when she joined the family. >> it's not enough to just

survive something, right? that's not the point of life. you've got to thrive. you've got to feel happy, and i think i really tried to adopt this british sensibility of a stiff upper lip. >> it has its -- >> i tried. i really tried, but i think that what that does internally is probably really damaging. >> bradbury now looking back at that interview. >> around the time of that documentary, some of the angst and the anger in the background, i was genuinely shocked it got that bad. my best guess, they wanted it as an indication of if they ever made the announcement which you have now seen, there would be some preparing the ground. >> do you think at that point that two months down the line, you know, at the turn of the year, harry and meghan will be announcing that pretty much they want out? >> yeah. i do think that. >> reporter: and tom bradby had

also had a sense of what the couple would say if they were in an interview about this situation. he said, quote, it wouldn't be pretty, but william and harry are at least finding some common ground this morning. in a joint statement, they have disputed allegations from a british newspaper which says that harry is leaving the royal family because he's being bullied by william. they said this language is inflammatory, and it is offensive and potentially harmful. george? >> james, thanks. let's talk to chris ship, and this word summit conjures up the notion of negotiations. is this a negotiation, and who has the leverage? >> well, where do you start with this story, george? what i know is there will be some sort of paper, a document, call it what you will, that is being prepared at pace over the weekend. the queen's courtiers have been working over the weekend so they can present the paper to them here today, but, you know, it's not going to be just one sheet of paper.

there will be quite a few different options in there. this has never been done before. it's without precedent. no one has been half in and half out of the royal family, and no one has done it as far away as canada. meghan will have her say in this whole thing. she's going to be skyping or whatsapping into the meeting, and we're just going to -- we get a sense at the end of the day about what they have talked about. i think we'll get some conclusions probably tomorrow, and that's quite quick. this is the royal family we're talking about. that's quite quick. >> that would be fast. how much of this comes down to money, and how much they can get from the government and the queen's estate and how much they can earn outside? >> i think there's a lot of it down to money because there's a difficulty if harry's not living in the uk all the time, then where does he pay his tax? does he pay here or in canada? there's a lot of things to discuss here. i think it's important to clarify that harry and meghan have said they want to be financially independent. how do they earn that money? they can earn it pretty easily.

the brand sussex is huge. they can make commercial deals and i'm sure there are companies all over america and canada thinking about how they could work with the sussexs going forward right now. a lot of their money, most of their money comes from harry's father, prince charles, through a private estate known as the dutch of cornwall. it's private money. we don't know how much he gives them every year, and i think that's going to be the center of a lot of the negotiations. how much money they're going to still going to be getting from dad. >> you do say this seems to be happening quickly for the royal family, maybe as early as tomorrow. they also need to show unity, don't they? >> yes, and that's difficult. i mean, you've just heard james talking about, you know, all these different allegations and the rumor and the gossip that's going on at the moment, and, you know, i spoke to tom bradby over the weekend. the only facts we have on the family relations is from the horse's mouth, if you like, from

harry when he spoke to tom on that africa tour. i was with him as we were going through that tour, noticing how things were getting more tense and how that documentary was sort of, you know, scratching below the surface. you didn't have to scratch very far to see things weren't going very well at all. there's a lot of gossip going around at the moment about how they're getting on. i'll say this about the royal family, when they need to pull together, when they have an emergency situation such as this -- and people are saying this isn't a crisis. look what's going on in iran or elsewhere, or in australia, but they have to get a grip on this. you can see the interest in this story, and they know they want to move forward. thank you very much. >> we will be watching. thanks very much. t.j.? we turn to a story of survival. a man rescued after surviving three weeks alone in the alaskan wilderness. he was stranded in the wilderness after his cabin burned to the ground. gio benitez with the story. >> reporter: this morning, an incredible story of survival. a man rescued 23 days after he was stranded alone in the alaskan wilderness.

you can see s.o.s. written in the snow as the rescue helicopter hovers above. 30-year-old tyson steele had been living in his remote cabin, but in mid december that cabin burned down. his closest neighbor was 20 miles away. >> a flaming piece of cardboard went up the chimney and landed on the roof. it started a slow fire. >> reporter: steele wearing just long johns, a wool sweater and boots with no socks. he said he survived the first two nights in subzero it temperatures by making a snow cave and then putting together a temporary shelter using pieces from his burned down home. on thursday, after a friend hadn't heard from steele in weeks, state troopers went for a wellness check, and they saw him waving his arms and that s.o.s. message etched in the deep snow. >> there were some dark thoughts that came along, but i was one-minded to just get through it, just to survive. >> and we're glad he's okay.

we are back now with the oscar nominations. by got some surprises, some snubs and surprises maybe even, but "the joker," got the most nods. chris connelly and "variety's" elizabeth wagmeister here to break it down. we were watching you two go at it every time an announcement was made. what are the biggest shockers? >> you go all "y" chromosome on best director. i know somebody will be left

out, but i don't understand why greta gerwig is not in that category. i would have put her in instead of todd phillips. >> absolutely. there's only been five women nominated in the best director's category. only one win, katherine bigelow. greta gerwig was nominated for "lady bird," but huge shock, and there will be head lines. >> i was disappointed. i was pulling for adam sandler. his role in "uncut gems," brilliant acting. >> sandler and j-lo can throw a party, and beyonce can come by too. they're well known people who might not have heard what they were hoping to hear this morning. best actor is also a ten-car pileup. all the nominees are outstanding. you can't deny that. >> how about scarlett johansson? two shots. >> double nominee, supporting and also best actress. now this has not happened since 2007. cate blanchett was a double

nomin nominee. this is huge news for scarlett johansson because her first nominations ever, and she got two out of the gate. >> she'll have two written speeches and joaquin won't have any. >> we'll take another quick break and be right back. this category. >> and cynthia erivo in the best actress category. >> this was a welcome surprise. people were gunning for her, but this was a stacked category. now the good news is that means we're seeing some diversity in the acting nominations. we just saw the bafta awards out of 20 nominations, they were all white actors, and cynthia erivo recently spoke to us at "variety," spoke out against that. this is a real welcome surprise for her. she said she won't perform at bafta because of the nominee, but there is a ton of diversity across the board. >> best song too. >> multitalented. >> very much so, and we might see her perform at the oscars too. >> can i ask you a quick question? "rocketman," do you think it was the "bohemian rhapsody" factor? >> everybody loved rami, and renee zellweger is your favorite for judy garland. it was just a jammed category, and just lost out as a result. >> he spoke out, taron egerton backstage, and he said the movie

came out so early that they have a tendency sometimes, and that's the death nail for some of the performances and movies, people forgot about it. they came out in may. >> it's hard when you are going up against a guy playing a pope. >> what about the little movie that could now? "parasite". >> yeah. [ applause ] >> it's done so well, but they are excited about their chances. >> everybody is so excited about "parasite," now a foreign film has never won for best picture. it's nominated. a lot of critics think that it could win. hbo also just optioned it for a series. we might see a "parasite," series, so that would be very cool, but i think when you look at best picture, you know, you're just talking about when these films are released very early, people forget about it. the opposite effect what we're going to see is with "1917." that just came out, and that's top of radar for the academy, and got a huge box office boost this weekend. >> number one. >> yeah, number one. [ applause ] >> it's going for both best

foreign film and best picture? >> it's the likely winner for international film, but the great thing about "parasite," is its tribute to world cinecinecie 20 years ago, they would have went with a sitcom, and we have a true version of "parasite." it's a phenomenal movie. >> both of you, what is the headline for you? >> i think the headline number one is female directors snubbed. i think another headline is j-lo and beyonce are snubbed, and then i think another headline which we spoke about, yay for cynthia erivo, but not a ton of diversity. we were just talking about oscars so white. >> you have the two poles, east coast and west coast. martin scorscorsese, and they'l well, and we'll see how they do on oscar day. >> any predictions? >> it's early. i just hope they all show up. >> please do.
