attempted to get his stolen laptop back. byron reed and javon lee are in custody. according to charging documents reed is the suspected getaway driver and lee involved in taking the laptop. lee agreed to speak to abc 7 news but did not want to appear on camera. he says reed is his friend. when i asked if he was with reed december 31st, quote, i'm not trying to talk about that. do you belong in jail? should you be there? lee responded, quote, no, i shouldn't be here. according to charging documents, two individuals are shown snatching a laptop from zeng, they then fled into a waiting vehicle which later struck him. according to charging documents, lee was identified in surveillance video and by witnesses. do you think you're on that surveillance video police say they have of what happened. lee said, quote, i don't know. i don't think so 'cause i didn't do anything. zeng's funeral was this past weekend. his family accepted a scrapbook filled with supportive messages

on post-it notes which previously covered starbucks' window after his death. i asked lee about his prior robbery conviction. he did not want to talk about that. i did not have an opportunity to speak with byron reed. both men are scheduled to be back in court later this week. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. it is now 4:31. a quick check on your weather and traffic. mike? thank you, reggie, kumasi. the steady rain is over. you can seep the better part of this storm moving into the sierra. we have an unsettled flow from the northwest. it does have some moisture in it. maybe a chance of showers in the forecast scattered and the best chance near the coast and over the north bay. if you're stepping out, it's pretty mild. mid-40s to about 50 degrees and we'll end up not much warmer in the mid-50s for the most part, about 54 to 56 degrees. again, the best chance of a scattered shower across the north bay and near the coast. we still have that 2, a moderate

seemed to coincide with a rumor a locksmith showed up and that deputies were on their way. several homeless mothers and their children have been living in the magnolia street home since november. they moved in without permission when it was vacant. on friday a judge ordered them to leave the home. >> the message is out that there has to be a new paradigm, a new way of thinking about housing and homes and people who are homeless. that people have to assert their right to housing. >> the investment firm that owns the home offered to shelter the women for two months and pay for their moving expenses. the mothers have rejected that offer. happening today in san francisco, a first of its kind housing policy for teachers is set to be adopted. the board of education is expected to announce its vision for prop e at its meeting tonight. voters approved it last november, and it allows housing for teachers to be built on land owned by the city college. they say the policy comes at a critical time when teachers are

losing homes because evictions and rent increases. breaking news, officials in iran made arrests over the ukrainian airliner that was shot down killing all 176 people onboard. a spokesman said several were arrested, but it's unclear how many people or what their roles may have been. over the weekend iran admitted its military accidentally shot down the jet saying it was caused by human error. the president of iran says a special court should be set up to investigate and punish, that's a quote directly, punish those responsible for shooting down the plane. kumasi? thanks, jobina. an effort is about to begin to crack down on car burglaries in the east bay. oakland, berkeley, piedmont and san leandro are forming a task force to crack down on them. they've seen car burglaries explode in the last year. oakland saw a 25% increase in 2018. each city will provide two

officers to work in the jurisdictions. happening today six democratic presidential candidates will hold their final debate before the iowa caucuses. on stage joe biden, bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, pete buttigieg, tom steyer and amy klobuchar. a tight three-way race in california. sanders leads with 27% support among likely democratic voters. that is a 10% jump since november. biden follows with 24% and then warren at 23% and then you can see buttigieg, klobuchar are a distant fourth and fifth. 49ers coach kyle shanahan says they are not taking green bay lightly. he says they will limit quarterback aaron rodgers this sunday in the nfc championship game. fans are zeroing in on the 49ers store at levi's stadium stocking up on the merchandise. the niners' postseason is having a ripple etchinffect, though, be it's bringing tourists to town. >> it's very exciting.

4:42 on a tuesday. take a look around the state today. a little bit of snow up around chasta. not a lot, just a couple of inches. a mixture of sun and clouds and showers across the rest of northern california. head to southern california, low to mid-60s for l.a. and san diego. now we've got from 6:00 wednesday evening until 4:00 thursday evening, about 2,500 feet. 12 inchls es of snow. 1 to 2 feet possible above 2,000 feet. during the same time for the sierra. we're going to have some heavy snow, fresh powder for your skiing this weekend. getting up to tahoe ought to be pretty easy. thank you, mike. we move to breaking news. an officer involved shooting that hours later still has a big police presence in san jose.

>> police are set up along blossom hill road this morning. reporter anser hassan is there. >> reporter: chp and police just cleared the scene here in san jose. video from a short while ago this is officers taping off the area. now there's very little information. what we're being told is late last night chp officers were involved in a chase along highway 101. what led to that pursuit and why it ended up here on city streets is still under investigation. at some point officers did open fire. we're being told no suspects were hit and that no officers were injured either. san jose police were also involved, possibly looking at suspects in pursuiter in velasco road. we'll continue to monitor the situation all morning and bring you updates as they become available. reporting live in san jose,

anser hassan, abc 7 news. sonoma county is trying to bounce back after the kincade fire and the forced power outages that came along with it. today supervisors will vote whether to sign a contract with the law firm that could represent the county for any possible lawsuit against pg&e. a report by moody's analytics research company found pg&e and power shutoffs during last year's wildfire had a noticeable impact on the economy. it's estimating sonoma county suffered $725 million in economic losses. county officials say the blackouts and evacuations impacted about 75% of the population. people in the philippines are being urged not to return home as the volcano spews ash and red-hot lava. it has increased to a level four, indicating a hazardous eruption is imminent. tens of thousands have evacuated. the bay area home to one of the largest filipino populations in the country. the staff at the filipino community center in san francisco has been following that news closely.

named steele, homeless, looking for work. >> he wanted to work. he just needed a means to do so. i saw the opportunity and say why not. >> reporter: vargas said steele had his i.d. and social security card but didn't own much more than sneakers, sweatshirt and jeans, an issue in his search for employment. steele needed work boots. so they came here to the big 5 just a few miles away. >> we drove him up there and had him try them off and drove him back to the salvation army shelter. >> reporter: a small purchase for vargas, a big deal for steele. upd shared the story and this picture saying setting somebody up to be able to provide for themselves is a gift like no other. >> it's real easy to do the right thing. >> reporter: vargas has seen changes and challenges for those living within the community. vargas says part of building a better bay area is recognizing we are all trying, and we all go through some tough times. >> there's no crime with being homeless. i'm a human. they're human. just talk to them. >> reporter: a strategy the
