>> this is the reason we're going to keep this fight flaming. this is the reason this movement is going to keep moving and building. i want people on planes right now to shut this city housing could not legally live in the vacant home they took over two months ago in desperation over the homelessness crisis. they turned down an offer for the home's owner, wedgewood properties, for two months of housing, refusing to leave. after the early morning arrests, a fence was put around the house and security guards were stationed inside. >> we're going to send in a paramilitary force when the only thing the people had outside was dream catchers and drums. it's obscene. >> the doors were barricaded. they had fortified the doors. making entry into the residence was very difficult. >> my heart goes out to those mothers. these are mothers. they're not criminals. they are mothers that have

engaged in what i believe is a courageous act of civil peacefully. we respect what the women said. we don't respect what they did. no one's property should be invaded and stolen. >> reporter: the charges were all misdemeanors for resisting eviction and for obstructing officers. we did hear from law enforcement late this afternoon there might be a vigil or protest of some kind at the house in oakland on magnolia street. now, i asked mom misty cross about the fence that's now up around the house. what she told me as she walked out of jail this afternoon is, anything built up can be broken just like the system. in dublin, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> leslie, thanks. it's a hot topic, and on "midday live" tonight we asked viewers in a live poll how they felt about the moms for housing group. the overwhelming majority, 77%, voted for sets bad precedent.

the second most popular option was waste of resources. 7% called the group an effective protest. >> this story has thrust a company into the spotlight that has been quietly flipping houses in the bay area fordecades. >> reporter: wedgewood properties has been flipping properties in the bay area for decades. here is what they had to say. are you proud of flipping houses? >> flipping houses creates better neighborhoods. it takes a home that's been distressed or foreclosed upon and invests money into that house. >> reporter: on wedgewood's website it states the flip business is the backbone of the company. valerie hearter understands the

opportunity. she is a relat local homeless groups. her concern, companies like wedgewood swoop in without community outreach. >> you can make a substantial profit without having to make pricing so unaffordable that you're taking people away from their homes. there has to be a way for them to also give back. >> reporter: over the last ten years, the median home prices in the bay area have spiked to well over $1 million. many residents have seen their own neighborhoods flip. >> i think it's a business practice that people decide to do. i've never thought about the morality of it. >> people are flipping to make their own profit. they can afford not to do that. >> i watch hgtv all the time. i think it's awesome. i would do it. >> reporter: wedgewood was established in 1985. they buy and sell 200 properties in the bay area every year. before and after photos on the website show what a difference a

renovation can make. the real hot debate, who ends up reaping the rewards. >> definitely as a corporation with that kind of funding, they definitely have the upper hand. >> reporter: how would you answer those people who say that flipping houses actually drives people out of neighborhoods? >> i don't think it drives people out of neighborhoods. i think it drives people to neighborhoods. >> reporter: at the heart of this debate is the question, we would love for our viewers to weigh in, how to invest in neighborhoods in a way that feels fair. that's why it's a complicated issue. wedgewood told us they never leave their properties vacant and many customers are happy about their work. chris reyes for abc 7 news. >> chris, thanks very much. a fight over a ten-unite apartment complex in san mateo highlights the ongoing search for a fix for the housing crisis we're enduring. several housing groups have sued the city of san mateo after it rejected the project. advocates cite the decades-old housing accountability act as a

reason why it should be approved. but a judge in the case issued a narrow ruling that could challenge the law. that's when the state decided to step in. the attorney general's office says it will defend the law. sonoma county is tackling a mile-long homeless tra lless caa rosa. it's a hot issue, and just a short time ago the county decided to move the people to los guilicos park. abc 7 news' wayne freeman has more. >> reporter: good evening, kristen. it's a big surprise, until an hour ago people expected the board of supervisors to place the residents of that homeless camp here on the county administration campus. then we found out it was only a few feet, or would have been only a few feet from a nursery school, a preschool. those parents came in, they complained. now a new decision, they're going to move the residents of that homeless encampment roughly

ten hours out of town. it's a site of a juvenile detention center and other facilities and just across the highway of a retirement community. the county intends to create a full service facility for the homeless, including 60 portable housing units. a few moments ago we spoke with barbie robinson who will be running the program for the county. >> our plan is to have resources for coordination of logistics, to move individuals and their things out to whatever site it was going to be. if it was here at campus, we would have had to have transportation and logistics for their belongings. >> reporter: not everyone in the county agrees with the decision. >> it's going to be a waste of time and money because nobody can go out there. people are trying to get a job. people are trying to find a place to live.

suspects after the third robbery. investigators identified two others. just two weeks ago, search warrants served in hercules and richmond netted all four suspects, all under the age of nit for sed chase chp says last night officersrr. tried to pull over a car with no tail lights near gilroy. officers say the driver took them on a high speed chase into san jose and they opened fire after the car slammed into a patrol vehicle. the driver, a teenager, ran and was later arrested. despite all the chaos, no one was hurt. parents convicted of certain crimes in san francisco could skip jail time and instead take part in a diversion program. district attorney jason boudine said his office will implement a

new law that covers serious and nonviolent felonies. boudine's parents were incarcerated when he was a toddler. he said in a statement, i grew up visiting my parents behind bars. i know the kind of trauma the sudden loss of a parent can have on a child and the kind of resources that are needed to make that child whole again. no one was hurt this evening after a south san francisco fire at a waste transfer site. trash inside the building caught fire. sky7 was ove the scene as firefighters put out the flames at 5:00. employees were evacuated as a precaution but nobody was hurt. our strongest storm of the week is less than 36 hours away now. and it could bring more than an inch of rain where you live. abc 7 news weather anchor spencer christian is here. >> here is a look at live doppler 7. conditions are calm but the approaching storm is a moderate storm, ranking 2 on the storm impact scale.

traffic continues to increase by 3% per year. at the same time, the airport plans to add more baggage handling facilities along with more tsa security screening lanes. te eight existing lanes in terminal "b" are often backed up during peak periods. with expansion comes concern about jet engine emissions. the air quality district estimates an increase in emissions of 0.15%. the airport says it wants to balance demand for more flights with an environmental awareness. >> rather than having airplanes sitting out on the apron after they've landed waiting for a gate to open up, because we're gate constrained, idling their engines, generating more emissions, by having a more efficient facility we'll be able to move people and planes through here more efficiently both from an environmental and customer perspective. >> reporter: the mayor believes san jose is leading the way. >> we have launched the largest all-electric bus fleet of any

money back. but it's getting hard of her. >> a new report trashes california's recycling system, an issue abc 7 has been studying for many months. >> we're talking about bottle deposits. it's harder than ever to get back the california redemption value because recycling centers have closed. >> now tomorrow, state lawmakers will talk about changing the system. annabelle munoz from our sister station in los angeles looks at what would improve it. >> reporter: recycling is good for the environment. and it could mean some extra cash. but consumer watch dogs say the system in california is not wrking. >> it was built to rely on redemption centers that now are closing right and left. and do that up front. >> reporter: the golden state is lagging behind others.

>> california is one of the worst of the 50 systems we've looked at. we've seen states like my and i oregon with 89, 90% redemption rates. california is 68%. >> reporter: the report found high contamination rates at recycling facilities, saying one in four items in bins are not recyclable. a bill working its way through the state legislature proposes a major overhaul. part of the proposal would require retailers to pay consumers. right now that's a catch-22. >> our law is so convoluted, they're prevented from taking a bunch, huge loads of bottles and cans and contracting with a recycler to pick it up, give them money for it and take it away and market it on the scrap market. >> reporter: the law would also require bench makers to come up with a new system and extend provisions to wine and liquor makers. >> that would involve making sure there are fair and

the folks in napa and sonoma are not going to like this. wine consumption is down in the united states for the first time in a quarter century. a report by alcohol industry group iwsr found that americans are drinking more hard seltzers and liquor. analysts say it's a part of a broader trend of people looking for healthier choices. tariffs are also a problem. the trump administration imposed a tariff on wine in october. fhe prosed last month. we've seen a trend of robot restaurants emerging in san francisco. >> it's an interesting idea, but as some open, others are closing. abc 7 news's luz pena tells us

>> reporter: daughter charmaine had fun posting pictures from the ship. >> texting friends, snapchat and all that. >> reporter: the family figured they could use their phones freely. sprint aassured them their plan included unlimited calls and texts from mexico. >> my dad went out of his way to make sure it wouldn't cost extra, we could use the phones as we normally do. >> reporter: so they were stunned when they got back home. sprint called to say they owed thousands of dollars for using their phones on the trip. >> i was in shock for sure. i was like, this is not right. >> reporter: at first roland thought the call was a scam but sprint confirmed he owed $2,300, almost as much as the cruise. >> i said, well, how could i get charged for that, my plan includes roaming in mexico. >> reporter: charmaine alone sent 1,700 messages. >> my phone number was the one that racked up the most amount
