♪ it's the final night heret fire station 30, but neighbors here in union city are sounding the alarm about safety. they may have been evicted, but tonight the homeless moms from oakland are refusing to give up the fight. san francisco implements a new diversion program helping offenders with kids avoid jail time, but there are critics. abc7 news starts right now. >> now news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> in the east bay tonight, we are just hours away from a closing of fire station 30 in union city. >> the city is shutting down the station on easton court because they say it doesn't get enough calls for service. >> abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo joins us from union city where some are already sounding the alarm. amanda? >> yeah, dan, ama, the decision

to close fire station 30 came down in july. tonight there is still a fire crew inside, ready to respond until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. neighbors in the area are asking what's next. neighbors near fire station 30 in union city are sounding the alarm on safety. wednesday's 8:00 a.m. closure is leading to a list of concerns and questions. >> my question would be why in this economy when everybody and everything is doing well. and the other concern i have is about response time. >> so we asked the city's mayor. >> the purpose of the closure first and foremost is because it was underutilized. >> the mayor says on average the station received 1.7 calls in a 24-hour period. she says underuse was costing the city more than $3.2 million a year. union city is currently facing a budget deficit. >> it's a puzzle to us, the firefighters, especially with the public safety tax that they are already collecting from citizens who voted to pay the money to maintain the firehouses

in des moines, trevor ault, abc7 news. >> the fact checkers were again hard at work tonight to find out which claims oath hold out. go to abc7news.com. the house will hold a historic vote wednesday to send the articles of impeachment over to the senate. the articles accuse president trump of abuse of power and obstruction of congress for pressuring ukraine to launch investigations that would help him politically. the house will name impeachment managers. these are members of congress who will act as the prosecutors. once this is done, the managers will carry the articles across the u.s. capitol building in a procession. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says the trial will likely begin next tuesday. supreme court chief justice john roberts will preside. no sitting president has ever been convicted. this will be only the third trial of an american president, joining that of andrew johnson and bill clinton. richard nixon resigned before he could be impeached. all right. ght it dryoingife look oomhecara

abc7 news reporter kate larsen got a rare glimpse inside the program and the families it's helping. >> on any given night, about 30 san francisco unified students sleep inside this school gym. most of the kids come from single parent families who have nowhere else to go. juan is 16 years old and says he likes galileo high school. he fled el salvador with his mother and siblings last summer. they ended up homeless in san francisco and have been staying at the buena vista horace mann school for a week. >> i would be happy in a house my mom rents. >> they were threatening to kill me or my kids. i had to leave because it's not safe. they killed someone in front of my house. >> anna is juan's mother. she is seeki ining asylum for h family. thanks to the shelter, they're not on the streets and they have support. seven nights a week, employees from dolores street community services set up for the so-called stay-over program at the mission district school.

the families are given food, access to showers and lockers for their belongings. >> she is sleeping in the gym. she has hope for better future for the kids. >> reporter: jacqueline portillo is the manager of the shelter who originally was opened just for buena vista horace mann students in need. but it was underutilized so last year they expanded the program and occupancy jumped 60%. >> here we're making together to make this kid be successful in the school. >> city hall reports nearly two-thirds of the families who have exited the program are on the path to secure housing. kate larsen, abc7 news. >> and we do want to hear your ideas about building a better area. you can share them by joining our building a better bay area on facebook. new details on the delta plane that dumped jet fuel on five elementaries as it returned to los angeles international airport as some of the children were playing on a playground at the time. a total of 56 kids and adults had to be treated by the los angeles county fire department
