the top with former vice president joe biden, senator warren and former mayor pete buttigieg following closely behind. kenneth. >> our political director saying at least four of those candidates have a real shot at winning it less than three weeks. megan, thank you. all right to washington now and the articles of impeachment against president trump are heading to the senate today setting the stage for a trial to begin next tuesday. democrats are also sending over new evidence including a note from rudy giuliani's indicted associate lev parnas written on hotelstationary. it says get them to announce an investigation into the bidens. there's also a text message suggesting former u.s. ambassador marie yovanovitch was under surveillance in ukraine before she was fired by president trump. that message came from robert hyde of connecticut, a trump supporter who is running for congress. no word if these documents will be introduced at the trial. meanwhile, our mary bruce reports some strict rules have

>> reporter: and this trial will not look like your average proceedings on the senate floor. all 100 senators are expected to be in their seats silent throughout the entire trial, and they will not be allowed to have any electronics so no cell phones or tablets. it's likely to be a challenge for some senators. >> republican leaders plan to start the trial first and consider witnesses later. well, we turn to the growing outrage after a delta passenger jet dumped its fuel onto a neighborhood in los angeles. >> the toxic fuel sprayed several schools on the ground injuring children and overnight new air traffic control conversations came to light raising new questions. confusion and concern in southern california after a delta plane dumped its fuel showering people with a toxic mist in this los angeles neighborhood. >> my friend said that it was -- it was raining.

>> and it was very strong, the odor. >> reporter: delta says the plane heading to china experienced an engine issue requiring the pilots to return to l.a.x. the plane then dumped fuel as part of a normal procedure to reach a safe landing weight. 60 people were treated for injuries. most of them students at area schools suffering eye and skin irritation. they say they thought it was raining. >> it was pretty scary. i didn't know what was happening. i was kind of frightened. >> reporter: experts say fuel dumping during an emergency usually happens over water or at higher eleonab 5, that's where fuel can evaporate before hitting the ground. but this plane was getting rid of its fuel as just above 2,000 feet. >> usually you're going to want to dump fuel out over the water or over a sparsely populated area and in conjunction with air traffic control. if you're going to dump earth on the way to the airport over a city, you really need to have an urgent reason to do so.

>> reporter: audio released overnight raising questions about what happened in the air. >> we got it back under control. we're going to come back to l.a.x. we're not critical. >> okay, so you don't need to hold or dump -- >> negative. we'll be requesting runway 25 right. >> reporter: the l.a. fire department is using meters in the area to detect unsafe levels as parents remain concerned about unsafe health risk. >> insane. i mean, you would think they would know where they're flying. >> experts say based on the plane's location it would have taken the pilots at least 30 minutes to dump the fuel over the ocean. the faa is now investigating. investigators have a new piece of evidence as they look into the shootdown of a passenger plane over iran. new video shows an iranian missile launching and exploding near the plane taking out its communications and then a second missile launches and reaches the jet. its flaming wreckage was seen falling to the ground. meanwhile, there's confusion about the plane's black boxes. iran says they've been sent to france, but french authorities are saying that's not the case. 63 canadians were killed in that crash.

25-year-old sam has been a volunteer firefighter for years. we guess he was born to run into action. get it. we turn now to north carolina and dramatic video of a storm ripping apart a school gym. >> kids were sent running for cover trying to escape. abo benitez joins us with that story. >> reporter: take a good look at this video. those are kids playing in the gymnasium when suddenly the roof behind those curtains caves in. an intense gust of wind shoots debris into the gym. >> it took me a second to process what was going on, and i looked, and i was like, oh, my goodness. this is not good, and i started yelling to my students, run, run, run. >> reporter: this terrifying moment from union intermediate school in clinton, north carolina. 21 children playing in the gym as a storm raged outside and then overnight p.e. teacher tanya robinson-freeman sharing her harrowing story.

we have that video. the security guards say they see the bus come to the end of the line, then they hear the driver tell everyone they have to get out. the security guards say they then see several homeless people get off the bus and disappear into the darkness. this is a samtrans bus coming from the peninsula. phil matier is breaking this exclusive story this morning. he asked san francisco supervisor aaron pes kkin about this practice. he called it unconscionable saying it appears agencies are playing musical chairs with the homeless. this as san francisco is spending millions to deal with the homeless population it has. the city just opened a $4 million navigation center for the homeless on the embarcadero located just a few blocks away from here, where these homeless people are being dropped off. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >>
