you know who the big cheese is -- ken jennings is the big cheese. he is the newly crowned greatest of all time. he is standing by for his first live interview after last night's big win. >> what a big win last night. we have a lot to cover today. we'll begin with the showdown for democrats last night. the final debate before the first votes are cast in the iowa caucuses less than three weeks away and tension between bernie sanders and elizabeth warren took center stage during the debate and in a revealing moment right after. linsey davis starts us off with all the latest in des moines. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, george. six candidates, smallest debate stage yet, also the least diverse. as for senators elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, they were united on at least one front. they did not come here to fight with each other. in fact, their most confrontational moment happened after the debate was over when they deliberately did not shake hands. in the last debate before the first votes are cast in iowa, a reluctant face-off between the two progressive senators on stage. >> bernie is my friend and i am not here to try to fight with bernie. >> reporter: bernie sanders

continuing to outright deny claims he told elizabeth warren during a private conversation in 2018 that a woman could not win the election. >> well, as a matter of a fact i didn't say it, and i don't want to waste a lot of time on this because this is what donald trump, maybe some of the media, want. anybody knows me knows that it's incomprehensible that i would think that a woman could not be president of the united states. >> reporter: but warren insists it happened and that the women on the stage are in better position to take on president trump. >> so can a woman beat donald trump? look at the men on this stage. collectively they have lost ten elections. [ laughter ] the only people on this stage who have won every single election that they've been in are the women -- amy and me. >> so true. [ applause ] >> so true. >> reporter: and in what could be a sign of simmering tensions, warren pulled back from a handshake following the debate, abruptly ending the exchange. last night's debate was also the first since president trump ordered a strike against the top

iranian general pushing foreign policy front and center. sanders and former vice president biden battling it out over the origin of the iraq war. >> i not only voted against the war, i helped lead the effort against that war. >> i said 13 years ago it was a mistake to give the president the authority to go to war. >> reporter: but others like veteran pete beaut but highlighting the generation gap. >> i bring a different perspective. there are enlisted people that i served with barely old enough to remember those votes on the authorization after 9/11 on the war in iraq. the next president is going to be confronted with national security challenges different in scope and in kind from anything we've seen before. >> donald trump is taking us

pall mall toward another war. we have a situation where he got us out of the iranian nuclear agreement, something i worked on for a significant period of time. as president i will get us back into that agreement. >> reporter: as impeachment grips washington, former vice president joe biden insists it won't be a distraction if he becomes the nominee. >> it doesn't really matter whether or not he's gone after me. i've got to be in a position that i think i can't hold a grudge. i have to not only fight but heal and as president of the united states that's what i will attempt to do. >> reporter: the stakes are especially high for the three senators who were on the stage here at drake university last night as they're going to have to basically come off the campaign trail in order to attend the impeachment trial in d.c. for potentially the next few weeks, for six days a week. george? >> yeah, that's definitely going to go through iowa, maybe even new hampshire. thanks very much. robin? >> now to capitol hill where lawmakers are about to take that historic step. the house preparing to vote to formally send the two articles of impeachment against president trump over to the senate. a group of lawmakers will then walk the articles across the capital and present them to the senate setting the stage for the third impeachment trial of a president in american history. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has all

those details for us. good morning, mary. >> reporter: robin, good morning. we will see history here today in the house as they vote to send over the articles of impeachment and to approve the team of lawmakers who will be prosecuting the case against the president. later they will be voting to send the articles of impeachment to the senate. then the ceremonial send off, the articles of impeachment marched over to the senate. it marks the end of a month-long impasse but also the beginning of another deeply partisan showdown as we head towards the election. now, the trial in earnest is set to begin on tuesday. just the opening statements could take days and all 100 senators are expected to sit there, silently, and weigh the charges that the president abused his power and obstructed congress by pressuring ukraine to investigate his rivals. now, democrats and a handful of key republicans are still hoping to hear from additional witnesses but it's unclear if they can muster enough support to force the hand of republican

leader. also unclear this morning, george, when this trial is going to end. on the eve of the senate trial democrats bolstered their case against president trump and their demands for more evidence by releasing new documents of the ukraine pressure campaign from an associate of rudy giuliani now facing charges in federal court. our senior national correspondent terry moran has the details. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. on the eve of the impeachment trial, this new evidence p potenti potentially important, shows the president's personal associates feverishly involved in that pressure campaign in ukraine to get ukraine tdig up dirt on the president's political rivals. overnight as president trump rallied his supporters, there's new evidence that sheds new light on the president's efforts to pressure ukraine into investigating his political rivals. the new evidence collected by congressional investigators comes from lev parnas, an associate of trump's personal attorney, rudy giuliani, 59 pages of records including text message, emails and handwritten notes, including one scrawled on hotel stationary that reads,

quote, get zelensky to announce that the biden case will be investigated. and there's a letter from giuliani requesting a meeting with president-elect zelensky emphasizing giuliani was working in his capacity as persona counsel to president trump and with his knowledge and consent. democrats say the new evidence turned over by parnas goes to the core of their case against president trump. >> here's someone who is complying with the subpoena with explosive documentation that shows that this has been an effort under way dating back to early this -- early last year to be able to build a case to tear down biden. >> reporter: parnas was indicted with another giuliani associate last fall on campaign finance charges. trump has tried to distance himself from both men. >> i don't know them. i don't know about them. i don't know what they do. >> reporter: but parnas' lawyer seemingly attempting to undercut the president released this video montage on twitter showing

his client with the president and members of his family. also in those newly released documents another potential bombshell. text messages suggesting that former u.s. ambassador marie yovanovitch may have been under physical surveillance. robert hyde, a trump supporter and congressional candidate, claimed to have contact with a private security team monitoring the ambassador's moves and communications. hyde texting parnas, if you want her out, they need to make contact with security and, wow, can't believe trump hasn't fired this expletive. during her congressional testimony last november yovanovitch said she received a call from the state department giving her a warning. >> she said that there were concerns about my security. that's all. but it was not further explained. >> reporter: ambassador yovanovitch was, of course, eventually fired by president trump and hustled back to washington for security reasons. george? >> yeah, more of those documents may be coming. we'll see what impact it has in the debate over witnesses. thanks very much.

now to the demand for answers after that delta jet dumped fuel over multiple los angeles schools injuring dozens of students and adults. zachary kiesch has new details. >> at l.a.x. a triple seven was dumping fuel. >> reporter: this is the dramatic moment a delta jet preparing for an emergency landing sprays thousands of gallons of fuel over a string of los angeles elementary schools. there were kids outside on the playground when that toxic fuel rained down in a mist. >> we did have a fuel drop here. we smell it. we have an unknown number of people exposed. >> my friend said it was -- it was raining and it was very strong, the odor. >> reporter: medics then rushing to those effected areas. 60 people including children, teachers and parents at six different schools suffering from

minor eye and skin injuries. >> just coming home from your house and you see all this, suddenly just thinking the worst. >> reporter: according to delta shortly after taking off from l.a.x. and fueled up for a flight to shanghai, the jetliner experienced engine issues requiring it to return to the airport and dump the full load of fuel to reduce weight before landing. >> going to be heavy. inbound emergency on the runway. >> reporter: that jet was still dumping fuel below 2,300 feet according to the faa, the recommended level to rid the fuel is above 5,000 feet where the fuel evaporates before reaching the ground. >> usually you're going to want to dump fuel out over the water or over a sparsely populated area. if you're going to dump it on the way to the airport over a city, you really need to have an urgent reason to do so. >> reporter: overnight delta telling abc news, it was required as part of a normal procedure to reach a safe landing weight, adding they share concerns regarding reported minor injuries to adults and children at a school in the area.

according to the air traffic control record, the pilot rejected the idea of dropping the fuel over the ocean. when we got here to the school, you could smell those fumes. this could be much worse because it's still a residential area. robin? >> still so many questions as you said, zachary. thank you. now to the fallout growing from the world series cheating scandal. the red sox firing manager alex cora who helped both the houston astros and red sox win championships. whit johnson has the latest for us. >> reporter: this morning, the latest bombshell in that major league baseball cheating scandal dropping on the boston red sox. >> red sox win the world series! >> reporter: manager alex cora who helped them win a world series in 2018 now out of a job. the sox issuing a joint statement with cora announcing they have mutually agreed to part ways. the team adding, we collectively decided that it would not be possible for alex to effectively lead the club going forward. before heading to boston cora

served as bench coach for the houston astros during their 2017 world series victory. >> the houston astros are world champions! >> reporter: the league concluding that during the championship season, the astros placed a camera in the outfield stands that could see the catcher's signal and would then relay that information to the batter by banging on this garbage can. listen. >> this ball is crushed to left field. springer has just hit his 31st home run. >> reporter: the astros' manager and gm were both fired this week. but the commissioner's report identified cora as the potential mastermind saying cora was involved in developing both the banging scheme and utilizing the replay review room to decode and transmit signs. >> i think once you read what rob manfred wrote about his involvement with the houston astros and you compound that with what's alleged the boston red sox have done, i think the boston red sox and cora both understood what was coming.

>> reporter: alex cora released a statement saying that he did not want to be a distraction. he called boston a special place and that he will miss it dearly. the investigation, though, continues into the boston red sox and the team itself now is bracing for punishment. michael? >> i know their opponents are pretty upset about this, whit, as well. thank you so much. now we turn to the stunning "jeopardy" finale last night. ken jennings coming out on top and not only taking home the title but also a cool million dollars. t.j. holmes, the only man i think who could take him down, here to explain it all. >> this was edge of your seat stuff. this came down to the final contestant giving the final response in final "jeopardy." get it right and you live to fight another night. get it wrong and jennings is your champ. what's going to happen? let's watch. >> reporter: it was a dramatic, even shocking finish to determine -- >> the greatest of all time. >> for me? >> reporter: in the end it was ken jennings, emotional as he accepted his greatest of all time trophy after beating his

all-star competition in four games in the best of seven challenge. dominating the first round once again before going all in in the first final jeopardy. >> what did he wager? $32,800. >> reporter: that put him miles ahead of james holzhauer and brad rutter who left the first round with 0 points on the board. >> we'll get rid of those scores and, of course, add them to -- >> brad's score is still on there. >> reporter: jeopardy james managed to claw his way back in the second round. even going all in on a massive daily double. >> answer. >> what is chad? >> you're right. >> reporter: but it all came down to final "jeopardy." >> shakespeare's tragedies. fellas, here's your clue. he has 272 speeches, the most of any non-title character in a shakespeare tragedy.

[ applause ] >> reporter: jennings answered correctly but schocked everybody by wagering 0 points. >> nothing. interesting. >> reporter: then all eyes were on jeopardy james, the record-breaking former champ. respond correctly and go all in and he's the winner. >> did he come up with iago? he did not. >> reporter: but he risked it all and lost it all. >> it doesn't matter, your wager, 44,000. ken jennings, you are the champion! >> reporter: rutter and holzhauer hoisted ken jennings in the air, the undisputed champ walking away now with that trophy and a $1 million cash prize. okay, a word about brad rutter. he had a struggle during this tournament but he is the all-time winningest game show contestant in history. about $5 million. still even after ken jennings

ken jennings, will join us live. ken, it is great to have you up with us this morning. congratulations. it was so thrilling, an epic final like that going down to the final "jeopardy" question. what was it like when you knew you had it clinched? >> i just remember feeling shock. i have never -- i've been in a lot of these "jeopardy" super tournaments and have an amazing talent for finishing second. so i had no idea what to do when you actually win. it turns out you walk over and stand next to alex. >> ken, take us inside the mind of a champion. i got to admit i was surprised when i saw the big goose egg and you bet nothing in the final "jeopardy." explain your thought process there. >> there's a little bit of math that goes into wagering on "jeopardy," and generally what happens is the person in second should often make a very small wager. you're counting on the person in first to make a big wager, so it doesn't matter at that point. if they get it wrong, they're out, so it doesn't matter what you wager. you want to risk as little as possible for that eventuality.

i apologize for the math. it's a little early in the morning. >> you mentioned you got the chance to go stand next to alex and also got a chance to collect a million dollar check. and you took control from the first game. and do you feel like the g.o.a.t., or do you feel like this could have gone either way, the other guys could have been champions as well? did they have a chance is basically what i'm saying? >> honestly, james was building a lot of momentum in last night's game. you know, he was coming for me. it looked like i had put the game away, and he came racing back. and if he gets that final answer right, suddenly it's 2-2, and he's got momentum on his side. so, you know, it was not a dominating win at all. i think all three of us are very experienced "jeopardy" players, and if you run this back ten times, you'll get a different winner. you're never going to get the same winner twice in a row. we're not going to run it back, by the way. >> but we would love to see it. that was great television to watch like that. but, ken, you did have to change your strategy because of james

and you even adopted his motion of all in, all in. so what was that like having to change your strategy a little bit? >> i mean it's really just a credit to james, how much he's changed the game of "jeopardy" that brad and i both came in realizing we were going to have to play like him if we were going to have any hope of containing him. that's just how smart and demoralizing his strategy is. you know, you got to make those big bets even if it scares you because he puts the fear of god into the other two contestants. >> you also seemed to work on your buzzer game. >> it's -- you know, the timing of the buzzer is very tricky on "jeopardy." you can't buzz when you know it. you have to wait for alex to finish reading the question. if you buzz early, you get knocked out for a second. so what you need to do is find this exact second and it's -- for me it's just following the rhythm of alex's voice. we've heard him read tens of thousands of clues and just know how he's going to say it then there will be one beat then you buzz. but if i think about it i can't do it. it's kind of a zen thing.

>> you mentioned alex. you're a veteran of the show and have known alex for years. how was it to see him again and how is he doing? >> it's always a delight to see alex. you know, he's a guy who loves his job, thrives on "jeopardy." even facing this tough cancer diagnosis, you know, i think work is something that helped get him through it. he would never give that up if he could avoid it and -- but with these tournaments where he knows the three contestants there's something special there, a connection and some affection. i think he knows how much he means to us and, you know, he appreciates seeing "jeopardy" played well. so, you know, it's very special, very poignant to have another -- one more chance to play with alex. >> it came through how special it was for everyone involved. ken, thank you. we'll have much more with you in our next hour. so grab a cup of java and we'll get back to you. thank you. >> thanks, robin. congratulations to you too. >> bless your heart, thanks so much. >> that was great. all right, you guys, we turn to that amazing escape, a microburst tearing through a

school in north carolina right as children were playing. thankfully everyone made it out okay and sam has the story. good morning, sam. this is a little scary. >> yeah, it is. when you see this, take a look at it. you'll think it's a tornado. even i did when i first saw it. it doesn't have to be a tornado in a thunderstorm to make incredible damage, wow, like that one. >> reporter: take a good look at this video. those kids are playing in the gym when suddenly the roof behind those curtains blows in. it's an intense gust of wind and shoots debris straight into the gym. watch again. these people running away the moment they hear that collapse. the curtain offering a little protection giving them time to escape. p.e. teacher tanya robinson-freeman was with the 21 children in the gym. >> it took me a second to process what was going on, and i looked and i was like, oh, my goodness, this is not good. and i started yelling to my students, run, run, run. >> reporter: this is what it looked like after. debris everywhere.

the actress says this all about staying focused on meeting the needs of her son and she says using communication as the key tool when he's upset. >> oh, my god. i'm totally bugging. >> reporter: this morning actress alicia silverstone is saying no thank you to bad behavior especially when it comes to reprimanding her son. the "clueless" star saying her 8 and a half-year-old son bear was able to avoid the terrible 2s due to the healthy life-style they lead. silverstein telling "people" magazine there have been moments where there were things we had to redirect and correct, of course. but it just wasn't the fight that you hear about. adding that the most i have to say is, no thank you, bear. she continues and he goes, okay, that's my reprimanding. silverstone saying this works for her family because of a mutual respect they have for each other. >> it's very unusual for a young child to completely stop what they're doing just because you say no thank you. most kids need a little bit of urging, a little bit of explanation and, yeah, sometimes

[ applause ] >> i need to say something here. we've had a lot of fun along the way and you bring up our parents and i'm very flattered that i'm referred to as the heart. this woman right here after hurricane katrina my sister dorothy had to live with momma for awhile because her house was damaged and dorothy said do you know that diane calls the house all the time checking in on momma to see if we need anything? i had no idea she was doing that. and that is what is about these

relationships that i've been so grateful to have. >> a blessing to me. in fact, i brought the picture of us from last august out in l.a. >> oh. the family. >> and to be with the robins family, a great joy. your brother and i were all taking pictures. >> my brother has the hots for diane, let's just say that. he always has. >> bob, i know you worked with robin on "sportscenter" but have great memories about the work you did afterwards. >> this actually was i think nine years ago yesterday as my phone reminded me. we did an "soughtside the lines" story on the black athlete. but it was the venue that was so remarkable. he was the ebenezer bab 'tis church in atlanta, dr. king's church and you and i talked about it at the time and to be surrounded by that history, actually dealing with martin luther king iii while we were there, that topic and knowing you had spent so much time in atlanta and surrounded by the history, it was a very special

memory. it was a show that meant a great deal to you. had some substance but to be there surrounded by that was remarkable. >> and actually january 15th, 1990 mlk day is the day i started with the disney company and so for you to bring up that memo memory. [ applause ] >> the message. >> an i know, charlie, you brought memorabilia from your time together. what do you have. >> let me just say i feel like a caboose on this train. i'm so happy to be here. this goes back about 25 years when bob and robin and i began a three-person show on "sportscenter" which was -- >> unheard of at the time. >> which was revolutionary. >> we were just three jamokes trying to get along and bob right in front had what we call the general store because bob's nickname was the general. and we were preparing for the very first show with this

three-person ensemble and i said -- i wrote that welcome to our new set. robin and i are together and over yonder is bob in the general store. we had a coordinating producer who said, you can't write that. i said, why. nobody knows who the general is. i said, everybody in the building knows who the general is and he said, we can't do it. i said, okay, i'll ad lib it and it became the general store and the three of us. >> the mod squad. >> the mod squad. >> the mod squad, yes. >> little did i know, you know, you've been here so long we were the mod squad, we were really the mouseketeers. >> charlie, you're back. >> i'll disappoint you. hit a home run but what john talked about in hiring robin, when you see her on the air, we all felt it, i would -- when she was on espn i didn't know her from adam, but you'd stop and watch her. there's something about robin

that comes through the screen and it's a very special quality. and people can relate to it which is why and i don't want to get into a downer here which is why when you were sick i think everybody just not a person in the country who wasn't rooting for you and you -- you were -- it was a role that i don't think you wanted to be the poster child for people with the kinds of cancer that you were facing but you did it and everybody just was in love with the fact that you were so brave and such a tiger about that. [ applause ] >> what momma said, make your mess your message. one of the great days other than the first day i started was when david westin walked into my office and said, hey, we're going to make you the co-anchor with charlie and diane and to know that it could not have happened without your blessing. >> he came to us before that, are you game for this? absolutely.
