airport has been given tokens to the airport so they can ride back to the city. we have team coverage today. we begin with abc7 news reporter amy holly field. >> reporter: security guards shot this video when they noticed a sudden uptick of hopeless people. they found sam transbuses at the end of the line, emptying the bus and watched as a half dozen homeless people spilled out on to the streets. it originates on the peninsula. phil broke the story in the chronicle. he said it was a surprise to see the video. >> when you see the video, it is a shock. you realize, there is no place for these people to go. tey just melt into the night. >> we saw it happen around 5:00 this morning at the stop right next to the embarcadero center. the bus was at the end of the line. the people who got off the bus looked like they had nowhere to go. >> i didn't realize it was happening. clearly not a great thing.

>> it's horrible that they're homeless. there should be a solution. to bus them in from somewhere else, that's pretty low. >> reporter: but it is more complicated than that. he believes many of then started in san francisco and took b.a.r.t. to sfo. >> from what we understand, this is homeless people who end up at sfo and are particularly given a token to take them back to san francisco. >> reporter: police sfo hand out bus token when's the bafrt service ends because the homeless can't stay there. they're not ticketed passengers. the bus can take them to palo alto or san francisco. >> giving people rides is what we do here. if someone pays their fare and wants to get on the bus, we'll take them on the bus. >> reporter: the spokesperson at sfo calls the tokens an enter insolution. saying they are trying to get the home the loss services they need. amy hollyfield.

this? >> reporter: good afternoon. if you recall in 2018, san francisco won a lawsuit against the state of nevada after it was revealed that they were busing hoeless people into the city. mayor london breed said she can't confirm that's what's happening. if it is, she won't tolerate it. >> there will have to be a determination if there is evidence that this has occurred. so in the past, they worked to address this issue with nevada. >> in the case that lasted for years, the city was part of a class action lawsuit against the state of nevada for giving patients a one-way ticket from las vegas to cities around the country including san francisco. >> san francisco can't do it alone and it is unfair to believe we can. i would want the county to be a good partner in trying to work with us. >> both the mayor and aaron

flas it refers to the weakness. militis, inflammation. nervous cells. lush he in the spinal chord. >> caused by? >> that's the million-dollar question scientists are looking at. the cdc and other pediatricians have looked at hundreds of cases and we suspect it is related to a virus. it usually cops on after a child has an illness or cold symptoms. scientists linked it to a virus which millions of people get every year but only about one in less than a million are going to to get afm. usually children. >> any way to prevent this? if we're not sure how you get it, it is hard to prevent. prevention will come down to hand washing. there isn't a scientific way to prevent it. we can make the really important note treatment is really going to be dependent on how quick will we get to see these children in a hospital setting.

>> it seems like, if you go in with these symptoms, it is not necessarily going to be instantaneously clear to the physician that, oh, yeah, it's afm. you could have any kind of flu. a mill different things. >> and scientists are trying to work on a way to see if there's a diagnostic test. but general weakness in a child could be anything. even if your child has loss of strength in an arm or leg or having trouble swallowing or peeing, that could be numerous things. getting into the hospital getting the right tests done, it can help diagnose afm and then look at possible treatments like suppressing the immune system. a really important thing is the physical therapy and or the occupational therapy to get kids back to however we can get them back. >> okay. let's say you're a parent. you suspect your child has afm.

is this contagious? it is a virus. >> first, i would say i don't think parents should suspect their child has afm. it is so rare. parents know their children best. just like we heard, parents notice, my child is complaining of weakness. this is not normal for my child's behavior. get some medical advice and to look see if more tests or studies should be done. >> so it's unusual. if i have it, are you worried about sitting three feet away from me? >> no. er afm itself, the actual condition, it is fobl virus directly attacks those nerves in your spinal chord or your immune snem trying to takt so that process is not infection. the pre ceding cold, yes. yes.
