take a live look at the capitol. an historic day in the impeachment showdown about to begin. >> president trump is about to become the third president in american history to stand trial on articles of impeachment. >> it all begins today. here's exactly what is going to happen. at 12:00 eastern the house prosecution team will present the charges against president trump in the senate and read them out loud. then at 2:00 p.m. chief justice john roberts will arrive in the senate chamber to assume his constitutional role as presiding officer. he will be sworn in by the president of the senate, then he will swear in the 100 senators. they will take a new oath to do impartial justice. then the senate will formally notify the white house of the trial and call upon the president to answer the articles of impeachment and to send his counsel to make the case. our team is covering every angle of this story from the white house to capitol hill where senior congressional correspondent mary bruce starts us off. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning. we will see the beginning of the next historic chapter of this impeachment. the full senate will be sworn in as donald trump becomes just the third american president to face

a trial in the senate. with a stroke of the speaker's pen and an historic march across the capitol -- >> the house has passed hres 798, a resolution appointing and authorizing managers for the impeachment trial of donald john trump, the president of the united states. >> reporter: this morning the articles of impeachment are now in the hands of the senate. >> president trump put his own personal interests above the national interests, above our national security and if not stopped he will do it again. for that reason he was impeached and for that reason the house managers will take the case to the senate and to the american people. >> reporter: chairman adam schiff is leading the team of lawmakers that will prosecute the case. later today on the senate floor he will outline the charges that the president abused his power and obstructed congress by pressuring ukraine to

investigate his rivals. then the chief justice, john roberts, will be sworn in to preside and he will administer the oath to the full senate. during the trial, all 100 members will have to sit silently like jurors and weigh the evidence. >> this is the only body that can consider all factors presented by the house, decide what has or has not been proven, and choose what outcome best serves the nation. >> the senate is on trial. we will see whether they conduct a fair trial and allow the witnesses or conduct a cover-up. >> reporter: now, the president's team says they think it is unlikely that this trial lasts more than two weeks, but it's not really up to the white house. even a handful of key republicans say they are interested in hearing from additional witnesses and if they can force the republican leader's hand by getting enough support to call for new testimony and additional evidence, well, then we could see a much longer trial. >> that's the biggest unknown. mary bruce, thanks very much.

george, as this unfolds on capitol hill a former associate of rudy giuliani facing federal charges is making explosive new allegations overnight directly tying president trump, vice president pence and attorney general barr to the pressure campaign against ukraine. the issue at the center of president trump's impeachment. terry moran has those details for us. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. lev parnas, remember that name, he is the new witness who is now taking center stage in the impeachment. a u.s. citizen born in ukraine and he was rudy giuliani's right-hand man in the campaign to pressure ukraine to investigate the bidens. parnas is under indictment in new york on criminal campaign finance charges, but boy, does he have a story to tell. overnight in a blockbuster interview lev parnas directly implicates president trump in the alleged ukraine pressure campaign. >> president trump knew exactly what was going on. he was aware of all of my movements. he -- i wouldn't do anything

without the consent of rudy giuliani or the president. >> reporter: and parnas who is an associate of trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani says rooting out corruption was never their mission. >> it was all about joe biden, hunter biden. it was never about corruption. >> reporter: parnas' claims are mostly uncorroborated but he has handed over documents to congress including a handwritten note. it reads, quote, get zelensky to announce that the biden case will be investigated. >> that's mr. giuliani tasking you? >> that was always the main objective, correct. >> reporter: also in those documents messages between parnas and robert hyde, a trump supporter. parnas says he didn't take hyde seriously, but this morning the ukrainian government has launched a criminal investigation into the matter. as to the effort to investigate

the bidens, parnas says the attorney general was away what was happening. >> attorney general barr was aware. >> reporter: a spokesperson says that 100% false. parnas accuses mike pence of being heavily involved saying the vice president canceled his trip to the inauguration of the ukrainian president because the investigation was not forthcoming. >> reporter: the white house is questioning parnas' credibility. parnas insists john bolton is a key witness. >> 100%. he knows what happened there. >> reporter: last night we contacted rudy giuliani to ask him if he had any comment about parnas. he said, quote, none, he's a

very sad situation. now the question is will the senate get to hear the testimony of parnas and others. will they call witnessed next week? george? >> let's bring in jon karl. this is a real curve ball for the white house. >> it is. we have a response minutes ago from the white house to this. the response is not to directly address the allegations made by parnas, but to attack his credibility. stephanie grisham the white house press secretary saying these allegations are being made by a man out on bail for federal crimes and is desperate to reduce his exposure to prison. he adds the president did nothing wrong. the president has said he may have photographs with parnas, but he doesn't really know the man. the most explosive allegation or

one of them in that interview, is that the president knew what he was up to in ukraine and authorized it. the white house will point out in that interview parnas acknowledged he didn't directly speak to the president about any of this. >> he also has that letter from rudy giuliani saying he's working on the president's behalf. the big question will be how will the senate use this new evidence. will they vote for more witnesses. we know they're hoping for a far more quick process, even done before the president's scheduled state of the union on february 4th. >> the white house would like to see a trial go no more than two weeks. they're prepared to fight and bring witnesses in. the president has sent mixed signals at times suggesting he's open to witnesses at times suggesting he wanted other

witnesses such as the bidens. this is not a certainty here. we know at the very least republicans are saying they want to see the beginning of trial. >> jon, what do we know about who is dog to be making the case in the senate? >> we know of pat cipollone, he's the white house counsel and jay sekulow who is the outside counsel for the president. >> jon karl, i know you'll join us for our live coverage of the senate impeachment trial that starts at 12:00 eastern right here on abc. michael? george, we'll turn now to the race for the white house and those rising tensions between elizabeth warren and bernie sanders captured in new tapes of their post-debate confrontation where they call each other liars. linsey davis is here with the latest. good morning. >> good morning to you. boy, people were trying to read lips, read body language, right, for nearly 24 hours. the contentious moment that happened after the debate was replayed and analyzed to determine what was said in that terse exchange when senator sanders' handshake was not reciprocated by senator warren.

now we know what was said and both senators are accusing each other of lying on national tv. overnight, cnn releasing post-debate audio between elizabeth warren and bernie sanders right after the tense moment she refused to shake his outstretched hand. >> i think you called me a liar on national tv. >> what? >> i think you called me a liar on national tv. >> let's not do it right now. you want to have that discussion we'll have that discussion. you called me a liar. you told me -- all right, let's not do it now. >> reporter: the tense exchange came after the pair traded blows about a 2018 conversation in which warren claims sanders said a woman could not win the election, a claim sanders denied during the debate. >> well, as a matter of fact i didn't say it. anybody knows me knows that it's incomprehensible that i would think that a woman could not be president of the united states. >> reporter: warren not backing down. >> i think the best way to talk about who can win is by looking at people's winning record. so, can a woman beat donald trump? look at the men on this stage.

to you. >> it looks tough. rob, thanks very much. we turn to the dramatic rescue of an 11-year-old girl kidnapped on her way home in school. hours later alert drivers spotted the vehicle and police were able to save her. will reeve with the story, good morning. >> hey, good morning, george. it's a nightmare scenario, a child abducted getting off her school bus. an amber alert going out hoping someone sees something and says something. luckily that's exactly what happened and the little girl was saved. [ cheers ] >> reporter: a family erupting in celebration after receiving the joyous news that 11-year-old charlotte moccia had been located hours after being kidnapped. this surveillance video shows her usual route home from the bus stop this past tuesday. just seconds later a blue honda civic drives into the frame. police say the very next day she had just gotten off the bus when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back of a blue honda civic. >> i came out and i heard the

kid hollering for help and by the time i got down here to get over, try to get the plate number, all i saw was an individual bent over throwing her in the back and shoved her in the door and took off. >> reporter: her disappearance triggering an amber alert and mobilizing police. six hours after she was taken a flurry of 911 calls from the mass pike. law enforcement able to close in on the car where moccia was sitting in the backseat. >> the traffic was down to a crawl and at that particular time, we conducted a motor vehicle stop of that vehicle. >> want to just grab him right here? we'll stop him. >> we quickly located charlotte in the backseat of the vehicle and removed her from the vehicle. >> confirming you have that female. >> affirmative. >> reporter: her kidnapper, miguel rodriguez, taken into custody. >> she is an amazing little girl. i couldn't believe how she kept it all together and just speaking with us, it's amazing. >> reporter: there's still no word yet on what connection, if any, the suspect has to charlotte or why she was targeted. those officers said they're

and paula faris has the details. good morning again, paula. >> good morning george. according to previously unsealed search warrants, jennifer was terrified of her husband. the documents reveal he chased her around the home allegedly even tried to run her over with a vehicle. jennifer vanished in may. in newly unsealed search warrants jennifer dulos confided in the family baby-sitter about how her husband, fotis dulos, had tried to run her over with a vehicle in august of 2017. adding, jennifer was very afraid of her husband and he threatened to take the children permanently to greece. allegations that dulos' attorney denies. dulos, his girlfriend michelle troconis and his former civil attorney kent mawhinney were all arrested last week in connection to jennifer's death. and now this morning, newly released voice mails raising questions about the relationship between dulos and mawhinney, his former attorney. >> hi this, is fotis dulos. i just wanted to reach out. >> reporter: wtic-tv obtained several voice mails.

the station reported he left for mawhinney's estranged wife. >> i [ bleep ]. it's fotis dulos. hope you're doing well. i'm just trying to touch base with you to see what the plan is so i can plan my afternoon/evening accordingly. call me back. thanks so much. bye. >> reporter: mawhinney in the middle of a bitter divorce of his own arrested on charges of domestic violence, police say his estranged wife feared for her life. he was charged with violating a protective order to not contact her after asking dulos to do so on his behalf. "the stamford advocate" reporting in an arrest warrant last june mawhinney's wife claimed dulos was working with her estranged husband to get rid of her. >> that is a ridiculous allegation. that is a made for television sort of "b" grade theme that has no place in the case. >> reporter: wtic releasing new video of a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt captured outside mawhinney's wife's home last

april carrying what she says is a gas can and crowbar. police interviewed a suspect who the station told them he was asked by mawhinney to repair the garage door. mawhinney's attorney says he can't comment on the ongoing investigation. now, fotis dulos, who was charged with murder and kidnapping, posted $6 million bail. he's out as is his girlfriend, michelle troconis also posting bail. but the judge, george, issued a protective order. he is not allowed to communicate in any capacity with his five children. dulos is due next to court on february 28th. >> okay, paula, thanks very much. let's bring in dan abrams for more on this. let's talk about the phone records. >> yeah, so the phone records in conjunction with the surveillance footage allowed them to thread together everything they think happened with regard to dulos and his wife, et cetera. they become critical because they place him, the lawyer and the girlfriend, troconis, at places that they don't want to be.

they also help discredit exactly what they said and some did interviews with police, particularly her, as to where she was, when she was there, et cetera. the phone records can help disprove some of that so it's both to show where she was and where he was and where they weren't. >> oh, my gosh. new details as well that are coming out from the dulos family baby-sitter who said that jennifer once said that once her estranged husband tried to run her over. is that something that could come up in trial? >> this is the bombshell sort of from these search warrant applications, et cetera, because we didn't know about this up to this point. that's going to be a big legal fight as to whether that comes in. typically you don't admit past bad acts, meaning allegations that someone did something awful in a case about -- let's say a murder case because you say it's too prejudicial but there are arguments that can be made as to why something like that could be admitted. if they can show it was a pattern and practice in the way that he behaved and somehow this

was the culmination of that then it's possible that something like that could come into evidence but it will be a hard fight for prosecutors to get that in. >> then you have the ex-wife of kent mawhinney who said she believes she is part of the conspiracy to be killed herself. >> right. i mean, it's crazy. now we're starting to hear her lawyer saying he thinks she may have been a potential victim of them as well. he is now charged with conspiracy to commit murder in this case. >> layers and layers. >> it's bizarre. >> all right, dan, thank you so much. now we're going to go to the latest on the royal exit this morning. prince harry is making the first public appearance as he and meghan announced plans to step back. james longman is at buckingham palace where harry just made that appearance. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, michael. harry back on public duty for the first time since that bombshell announcement. he is championing issues he cares about, sport and mental health. meanwhile, his wife meghan is over in canada.

>> full sleeve, frozen. >> all so good. >> frozen. >> thanks, lara. now to our "gma" cover story. a new study finds women's blood pressure -- have you all heard about this? women's blood pressure rises higher and faster than men's high blood pressure generates, you know, heart disease and things like that so we want to keep that in mind so dr. jen ashton, you'll help us. >> good morning, robin. >> so what are we finding here? >> it is about gender specific pled cal research out in jama cardiology done by researchers at harvard and the barbra streisand women's center at cedars sinai. they compared not women to men, women to women, men to men and as you said what they found over time and they have 43 years of follow-up, women's blood pressure started to go up at a younger age and it went up faster and higher than men's. really suggesting here that we are not dealing with the same disease entity when you talk about vascular disease which as you know increases the risk of heart attack. >> so what's the theory behind this? >> there are a lot of theories.

it's not conclusively known why it happens to women but some include there's hormonal influences at play. there can be genetic and chromosomal factors. the way women and men process or live life and environmental differences can be at play and size is important. the average woman's organs are smaller and blood vessels are smaller so really again lending more weight to the fact that when you say heart disease as the number one killer, it is actually in many ways a different disease in women than it is in men. >> all right. so what can we do? >> i think this is the most important thing when you talk about heart disease because 80% is preventable. number one -- >> 80%? >> yes, which is the good news here. know your ob/gyn factors. this means pregnancy complications or things like pcos which can increase the risk. when we say know your numbers, that means your blood pressure, cholesterol.

gender-specific research is critically important. we need to study heart disease and other diseases specifically in women. this isn't like just study them. they can behave differently. we have these foods here, people know about reducing sodium intake in our foods, but increasing potassium intake in our foods can make a big difference in blood pressure control as well. so some of these things are good options. >> what's this? >> red wine in moderation. >> okay. off. the film, it is beautiful. it is really, really beautiful. it's great. >> thank you. >> you know, some people think you must be a dad. but you're not. so what inspired -- i know, right. what inspired this? >> yes, so, you know, basically a couple years ago i was coming across a lot of viral videos of african-american fathers that were doing their daughter's hair and it was weird because they were going viral and obviously because they were cute but i -- it really seemed like it was anominee. people were sharing because they weren't used to seeing it and for me i know so many young fathers that are great dads and just wanted to normalize and shine a lot because often time black men get a bad rap not being involved in their kids' lives so wanted to showcase a strong black family unit and show dads are present and willing to do whatever they need to do to take care of the family. >> i am very present in my girls' lives, but, boy, i messed up some hair.
