watch dog has come forward to say the trump administration broke the law by withholding military aid to ukraine. the issue at the center of the impeachment debate. >> abc's karina mitchell is here with what happens next. karina, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the senate has adjourneed for the long holiday weekend but behind closed doors, they're working to prepare legal briefs due saturday and monday and the president's defense has until tomorrow to respond to a summons. pretrial proceedings are under way after an historic day. chief justice john roberts taking the oath to oversee the trial against president trump swearing in the senators. >> so help you god. >> reporter: lead manager adam schiff formally presenting the two articles of impeachment. >> impeaching president donald john trump for high crimes and misdemeanors. >> reporter: democrats trying to make the case that the president pressured ukraine into investigating political rival joe biden. >> that was the most important thing, for him to stay on for another four years and keep the fight going. >> reporter: overnight lev parnas, the indicted associate

of trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani telling cnn's anderson cooper -- >> it was all about 2020. there was no other reason for doing it. >> reporter: a claim the president denies. >> don't know where he comes from. know nothing about him. i can only tell you this thing is a big hoax. >> reporter: parnas denies those claims saying he'd be willing to testify. meantime, the government accountability office, a nonpartisan watch dog group says the trump administration broke the law in withholding aid to ukraine. the white house denies the claim. now, at least one republican senator, susan collins from maine, says she's likely to want to hear further witness testimony but adds she'll hold off on making a final decision until opening arguments are presented. kenneth. >> and, again, those opening arguments kick off on tuesday after the mlk holiday. karina, thank you. we're learning more about the president's legal team for the impeachment trial. the defense team will be led by white house counsel pat cipollone and by the president's outside lawyer jay sekulow. abc news has also learned alan dershowitz will likely play a role.

meanwhile, a new criminal investigation has been launched by authorities in ukraine who want to know if president trump's allies legally spied on former u.s. ambassador marie yovanovitch. back in this country fbi agents yesterday visited the connecticut home and office of trump supporter robert hyde. text messages show hyde was volved in efforts to conduct surveillance on ambassador yovanovitch. hyde has denied trying to harm her. we turn now to a big development in the baseball cheating scandal. another manager has now lost his job. >> now the use of technology is fueling new speculation with players accused of using buzzers under their jerseys to gain a major advantage. this morning, explosive new allegations in the cheating scandal rocking major league baseball. two houston astro players now are accused of wearing buzzer devices under their jerseys so they could be alerted about the upcoming pitch.

>> altuve has just sent the astros to the world series. >> reporter: some are pointing to this video of jose altuve after he hit the game-winning home run in 2017 sending the astros to the world series, altuve is seen telling his teammates not to rip off his jersey during the celebration. he was asked about that moment after the game. >> you asked your teammates not to tear your shirt. why? >> what was that? >> you asked your teammates not to tear your shirt. why was that? >> i don't know. i'm too shy. last time they did that i got in trouble with my wife. >> altuve's agent issued a statement overnight saying altuve wants it known that he has never ever worn an electronic device in a major league game ever. >> tenth inning, altuve into left center field back at the wall, it is gone. >> reporter: abc news has learned major league baseball investigated whether players wore wearable devices to steal signs but found no evidence but the league found that they

used a camera to record signals and tipped off the batters by banging on garbage cans. that led the astros to fire their manager and general manager and the ripple effect has spread to another team. mets rookie manager carlos beltran has now lost his job accused of helping orchestrate the scheme when he played for the astros. beltran saying in a statement i've always taken pride in being a leader and doing things the right way, and in this situation i failed. i'm very sorry. earlier this week the boston red sox fired manager alex cora who was also with the astros in 2017. the scandal prompting outrage from players and fans, especially fans of the dodgers who lost both the 2017 and 2018 world series to the astros and red sox. >> as a lifelong angelino, it's heartbreaking to see that our boys in blue had it basically stolen from us, the title. >> the investigation into the red sox continues. as for the astros league officials say they are not considering stripping the team of their world series title. this morning we have new

information about u.s. troops who were injured when iran attacked a military base in iraq last week. the pentagon officially said there were no casualties in the missile attack on the al asad air base but u.s. officials now say 11 service members were injured and have been evacuated to air bases in kuwait and germany. officials say the troops suffered concussion symptoms and will now be evaluated for brain injuries. in chicago police say five people were hurt. at least one critically when a truck came crashing through a starbucks. look at that scene. the truck landed exactly where the coffee counter was pinning a barista. she was pulled out by first responders. witnesses say before the driver lost control and crashed, something may have cracked his windshield. the vehicle was not removed from the building overnight because authorities are worried the entire building could collapse. and we turn now to the weather and that major storm slamming the middle of the country and heading to the northeast for the weekend. more than ten inches of snow could fall in parts of the upper

serve as the head of the grammys. she had been on the job for just six months. the fbi has arrested three suspected neo-nazis allegedly planning to attend a pro-gun rally in virginia monday. a former canadian army reservist is among the men facing weapons and other charges. it comes after virginia's governor imposed a temporary ban on weapons near the state capitol, which is the site of monday's rally. a gun rights group challenged the governor's order, but yesterday a judge upheld the ban. there's growing outrage over the case of a mississippi man sentenced to 12 years in prison for bringing a cell phone into jail. the state supreme court has now upheld willie nash's sentence. nash was originally arrested for a misdemeanor. he challenged the sentence calling it excessive, but the state's highest court led it is within sentencing guidelines. a freshman congresswoman is opening up for the first time about her battle with baldness. in a new interview with the root, congresswoman ayanna pressley says her nightmare

we are back now with this avalanche caught on camera in wyoming. look at that. a search and rescue team was called to fly over the mountain and make sure no one was caught in all that snow. officials tell a local newspaper the avalanche was apparently triggered by a skier or snowboarder. we turn now to the dramatic rescue caught on camera after a girl was kidnapped on her way home from school. >> a couple in massachusetts jumped into action after seeing a car that matched the description given by police and their quick action likely saved that 11-year-old girl's life. this morning, an everyday couple being called heroes. >> this is a blue honda civic and they're doing 100 miles an hour right now. >> reporter: police say inside that blue honda civic is 11-year-old charlotte moccio. police say she had been kidnapped six hours earlier after getting off her school bus in springfield, massachusetts. >> he described her and throw her in the backseat and she was screaming. she was saying, stop, put me down, stop.

put me down. >> reporter: amanda disley and her husband benny correa were driving wednesday night with their five children aware of police reports that a girl had been forced into a blue honda and then benny saw the car. >> i said, yo, babe, that's that car. that's that car. you showed me that car. that's the car. >> reporter: amanda and benny got close enough to give police the license plate number only stopping their pursuit when they ran out of gas. >> we blew our suspense. >> our tire. >> i hit some dirt. i wasn't thinking about that. i played it safe. >> reporter: but police soon followed and eventually rescued the girl. the couple posted this video when they heard that charlotte was safe and sound. >> i cried. someone just messaged me that they think they got the car. >> reporter: the suspect, 24-year-old miguel rodriguez, was charged with kidnapping and assault as charlotte was reunited with her family. incredible action by benny and amanda there and they will tell more of their story later during

an interview on "good morning america." a south carolina woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally poisoning her husband with visine eye drops. lana clayton has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. prosecutors say she was motivated by greed when she poisoned her wealthy husband steven by putting eye drops in his water for days and taking his phone so he couldn't call for help. steven's sister tells "good morning america" her brother ingested enough visine to kill an elephant. >> i'm not a medical expert but i've heard a lot of people talk about -- a lot of medical experts talk about what happens to the body when a large amount of vasoconstrictor is introduced into the system, and i think my brother died a horrific death. >> lana clayton apologized and said she didn't mean to kill him but wanted to punish him. coming up later on "gma," what she allegedly did after her husband's death. in sports now nfl superstar odell beckham jr. is in trouble again.

and 44. we end up 52 to 57 degrees under a partly cloudy sky. i'll let you know how long we'll be out of the rain train coming up. here's frances with a look at the morning commute. >> starting off with a traffic aert in san jose in the campbell area. there was a wrong-way driver early this morning at 3:15 who was traveling on northbound 17. that right now is shut down as you approach 280. we'll bring you more details as soon as we have them. amy hollyfield is also heading live to the scene. she'll bring us a report. i want to show you where that is on the maps and give you some alternate routes. northbound 17, the hamilton on-ramp in campbell is shut down to northbound 17. approaching 280, that stretch is closed. you will want to consider winchester boulevard or bascom avenue as an alternate.

here is what it looks like past the accident, headlights are northbound 285. so traffic is light in the area. bcause this is a fatal accident it will be out there for a while. another live shot in san jose shows highway 87 on the right-hand side. we'll keep you posted on this crash. >> for the second day in a row, frances and amy hollyfield are covering a fatal wrong-way crash. amy is near the scene now. what are you seeing? >> hi, reggie. hard to believe we're doing this two days in a row. another wrong-way driver. i'm at the on-ramp of northbound highway 17. you can see a campbell police officer is parked here not allowing anyone on to the freeway. so just keep this in mind if this is part of your commute. the chp is headed our way right now. they'll escort us on to the highway. we should have a better vantage point in the next few minutes. l
