something about her that you cheer for her. pull for her. we'll have more on that. but we have breaking news to begin with. >> we have some breaking news, that's right, robin. we are now learning u.s. troops were injured when iran launched those missiles on u.s. bases in iraq. martha raddatz is in washington with the very latest. good morning to you, martha. >> reporter: good morning, michael. from president trump on down, the u.s. had said there were no injuries from that iranian missile strike. word coming this morning that, in fact, there were. this as iran's supreme leader is calling the u.s. an arrogant power. [ crowd chanting ] before tens of thousands of chanting iranians, the country's supreme leader was defiant claiming iran's retaliatory missile strikes on the u.s.-backed military bases in iraq dealt a blow to america's image as a global superpower and this morning, we are learning that u.s. military were, in fact, injured in the attack. this after president trump and military leaders initially

claiming the attack caused no injuries and only minimal damage. >> i'm pleased to inform you the american people should be extremely grateful and happy. no americans were harmed in last night's attack by the iranian regime. we suffered no casualties. >> reporter: we now know 11 u.s. service members have been evacuated from iraq to medical facilities in germany and kuwait because of worsening symptoms due to signs of traumatic brain injury and concussions. the military saying in a statement that while no u.s. service members were killed in the january 8th iranian attack on al assad air base, several were treated for concussion symptoms from the blast, and are

still being assessed. as a standard procedure, all personnel in the vicinity of a blast are screened for traumatic brain injury and if deemed appropriate are transported to a higher level of care. most of the forces had been in a bunker during the attack after early warning systems alerted the u.s. to the incoming missiles, but one of the housing units was obliterated, although no one was believed to be there during the attack. the military says the decision to evacuate the service members was made out of an abundance of caution and they are expected to return to duty, but there are very specific protocols in the military for traumatic brain injury, where the brain is essentially shaken and can be very serious, robin. >> thinking of them and wishing them all a full recovery. martha, thank you. now to the historic impeachment trial of president trump officially under way in the senate. the trial will kick into high gear on tuesday as a critical confrontation takes shape over whether any witnesses will be called. mary bruce has the latest on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin.

well, in a somber ceremony, the senate has now been transformed into a court of impeachment, but this morning, new evidence is adding new fuel to this debate over what this trial is actually going to look like, and whether it will include any additional witnesses. this morning, the impeachment trial of president donald trump now under way. >> on the part of the house will be received and escorted to the well of the senate. >> reporter: in a solemn ceremony seen just twice before in american history, nearly all 100 senators sitting quietly. >> hear ye, hear ye, hear ye. all persons are commanded to keep silent on pain of imprisonment. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts administering the oath. >> do you solemnly swear that in all things appertaining to the trial of the impeachment of donald john trump, president of the united states, now pending you will do impartial justice according to the constitution and laws so help you god? >> all: i do. >> reporter: one by one every senator signing that pledge. starting next week, like jurors

they will review the evidence and consider the charges that president trump abused his office and obstructed congress. >> donald j. trump, president of the united states, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. >> reporter: still unknown if democrats can muster enough support to call additional witnesses. several republicans now say they are interested in hearing new testimony. republican senator susan collins saying, i tend to believe having additional information would be helpful. it is likely that i would support a motion to call witnesses. democrats also want to introduce new evidence like the explosive allegations from lev parnas, an associate of the president's personal attorney, rudy giuliani. parnas says the two worked together to pressure ukraine to investigate joe biden and that the president knew about all of it. >> it was all about 2020, to make sure he had another four years. that was the way everybody viewed it. >> reporter: yesterday in the oval office, the president insisted he doesn't know parnas.

>> i don't know him. perhaps he is a fine man. perhaps he not. i know nothing about him. >> reporter: but this video released by parnas' attorney shows the two together in mar-a-lago in 2016. the president insists he did nothing wrong, and republicans have argued trump committed no crime, but a new report from a nonpartisan government watchdog says that's not the case. they concluded that the white house did break the law by withholding military aid from ukraine, writing, faithful execution of the law does not permit the president to substitute his own policy priorities for those that congress has enacted into law. now, democrats say that watchdog report only boosts their case and their calls for new witnesses and additional evidence. the white house, though, not surprisingly says they disagree with the opinion that the president broke the law. now, the trial will reconvene on tuesday and, george, just the opening statements could take days. >> yeah, we're not even sure if opening statements will be on tuesday. mary, thanks very much.

let's bring in our senior national correspondent terry moran, for more on this from the white house. and, terry, we know the president signed on to the strategy of getting this done fast. they hope it will be done by the planned state of the union on february 4th but this new debate over witnesses and documents sure does complicate that. >> reporter: it does and it has made this white house facing the prospect of a trial in just a few days still up in the air on strategy. the president has said as you point out he wants a quick dismissal, the speediest impeachment trial in history. bill clinton's lasting over a month, andrew johnson, over two months. he's moving for a dismissal and he's looking at this politically. when he was in the oval office yesterday you could see in front of him the map of the 2016 election and county by county where things are so he's got a sense of where it is going and he's going to decide his strategy, does he want witnesses? does he want to call executive privilege over witnesses from the administration? it is still very much up in the air here. >> it sure is. of course, unlike bill clinton he is running for re-election this year. we still don't have many details

on even the president's legal team. >> reporter: that's amazing. here's a major trial for his presidency coming up, and we don't know who his lawyers are going to be. we know in general right now we expect the white pat cipollone to lead the team, jay sekulow, who is the president's outside lawyer frequently seen on television to be part of it. maybe alan dershowitz as well but all that remains up in the air. george. >> terry moran, thanks very much. michael. we go to the weather. that dangerous storm moving across the country bringing heavy snow to the west. it is now targeting the midwest and northeast. marcus moore has the latest. >> reporter: overnight devastating winter winds, more than 60 miles per hour whipping up whiteout conditions shutting down highways, sidelining cars. in california snowfall blanketing roadways. low visibility and icy conditions bringing morning commutes to a halt, even stalling rows of trucks. heavy, wet snow downing power lines, causing outages. some residents in washington

stuck in freezing temperatures without power as officials battle high winds in an effort to restore the grid. >> all night building -- putting wire up and fixing poles and we come to energize it and trees have come back down. >> reporter: trees also shutting down highways. these residents stocking up on supplies. >> this is the worst power outage i've ever seen. >> reporter: but it is not just the snow. other parts of the snow experiencing heavy rain, icy roads and dangerous floods. in san francisco heavy rain fueling the endless stream of water pouring onto a home's driveway, extending into the street. >> you can go whitewater rafting in the middle of a rainstorm. >> reporter: and in dallas, drivers splashing through flooded streets. some vehicles stalling, stranding drivers. here in salt lake city, wind is picking up this morning, and you can see that driving snow. all right they've had several inches of snow and this new storm is bringing more. they're most concerned about the the storm is expected to wreak

havoc across the country. >> no doubt with that, marcus. thank you so much. we will get to the timing and track of the storm from rob who is here with that. good morning, rob. >> good morning, michael. i mean look at the size of it. advisories from new england out to southern california including blizzard warnings for parts of the upper midwest. let's time it out. there's freezing rain and snow across parts of omaha to kansas city into chicago and minneapolis. through the evening rush minneapolis could see six to nine inches. detroit will see significant snow with this but it's waffling as it gets into the northeast. winter weather advisories up for manhattan, one to three, maybe four inches before it turns to rain. either way you slice it, it'll be dangerous conditions over the next 48 hours. the only saving grace, robin, it is a fast mover. >> that's good. all right, rob. thank you. now to breaking news overnight, new trouble for the grammys. less than two weeks before music's biggest night the head of the recording academy placed on leave facing a misconduct allegation. kaylee hartung is here with that story for us. good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, robin. when deb dugan was named head of the recording academy the move

was applauded but less than six months later the first woman to hold that job is now under investigation. ♪ with ten days to go until grammy night a major shake-up overnight inside the recording academy. the group's president and ceo deborah dugan, the first woman to hold the job, now placed on administrative leave over an allegation of misconduct by a senior female member of the team. the recording academy telling abc news, the board of trustees has also retained two independent third party investigators to conduct independent investigations of the allegations. dugan's role as head of the academy only went into effect five months ago and the nature of the allegation remains unclear. the news stunning many inside the industry including "variety's" jim aswod who recently interviewed her. >> i spoke to her for an hour ten days ago. there was no question she was going to make big changes. she wasn't making them yet. she hadn't said exactly what they were. ♪ fallin' in and out of love >> reporter: alicia keys is hosting music's biggest night on

january 26th, with the jonas brothers, lizzo, ariana grande and aerosmith slated to perform. ♪ i don't want to miss a thing >> reporter: her sidelining as the first female president and ceo coming after the organization's diversity and inclusion task force released a report in december that included the music industry lacked diversity. the report pointing to two committees that were 70% male. >> my surmise and that of others is this is a coup, that deborah dugan came in with a style very different from the one of her predecessor, neil portnow, who was much more political. >> dugan was brought into this role with an array of experience in the industry in hopes of driving her vision to the next level. now with all eyes on the recording academy in the lead-up to music's big night, swift answers will be needed. >> thank you, kaylee. overseas now to that crisis in the philippines from a massive volcano that buried towns in ash and forced residents to evacuate.

bob woodruff has all the details from manila. >> reporter: since the taal volcano erupted spewing ash nine miles into the sky residents have been cleaning nonstop and some villages while others still look like ghost towns. the philippines' president is now calling this area no man's land. from his house overlooking the volcano, he witnessed the powerful eruption, first feeling the shaking of the earth -- >> boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: then watching the rocks and ash and what is known as volcanic lightning caused by static electricity. this morning the mayor of one small town allowing its residents temporarily back in to check their homes. as they head back out, streets crowded with vehicles filled with their belongings and livestock as fear of another more powerful eruption looms. since sunday's eruption, the taal network volcano has recorded 944 volcanic

earthquakes. over 27,000 families forced to evacuate to any of the 300 plus evacuation centers. this is this volcano's 35th eruption in the past 450 years. thousands of people have died before but this week, no casualties. let's just hope that doesn't change. george. >> boy, we certainly do. okay, bob woodruff, thanks very much. michael. all right, george. we're going to go now to new trouble for one of the nfl's biggest stars. new orleans police issuing an arrest warrant for odell beckham jr. for what he did while celebrating lsu's national championship this week. paula faris is here with more on this story. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it goes without saying that odell beckham jr. has a great amount of louisiana pride. born and raised there, he played football at lsu, his parents were student athletes as well but this morning there's a warrant out for his arrest. >> it's my honor to present the national championship trophy to coach ed orgeron and the lsu tigers. >> reporter: emotions were at an all-time high after lsu's decisive win over clemson at

monday's national championship game, but back in the locker room, nfl superstar and lsu alum odell beckham jr. taking the celebration a step too far according to new orleans police who moved forward with charges when footage of the nfl star appeared online. the cleveland browns wide receiver was issued an arrest warrant on thursday on a complaint of simple battery after video surfaced showing beckham jr. slapping this security officer on his backside. >> uh-oh. uh-oh. >> reporter: then appearing to mock him all while celebrating in the locker room. the officer was apparently asking players to extinguish their cigars which are not permitted inside the stadium. the browns putting out a statement saying, we are aware of the incident and have been in touch with odell and his representatives. they are cooperating with the proper authorities. beckham jr. also coming under fire for a separate incident immediately following the game,

seen on camera handing cash to lsu players, a move drawing attention from the ncaa and s.e.c. lsu initially believed the bills were fake but later issued a statement saying, we are working with our student athletes, the ncaa and the s.e.c. in order to rectify the situation. when asked if the money was real, which would be an ncaa violation, heisman trophy winner and lsu quarterback joe burrow telling barstool sports podcast this. >> did odell give you money? >> yeah, i'm not a student athlete anymore so i can say, yeah. >> wow, well, simple battery charges carry a maximum $1,000 fine, six months in jail. as of this morning beckham has not surrendered nor been arrested by authorities but his reps are telling the browns they are cooperating. it's one thing to smack the officer, but it's another to hand out money to these athletes because it jeopardizes their amateur status.

your dream's coming. good morning, i'm reggie aqui from "abc 7 mornings." the chp is investigating the cause of a deadly wrong way crash in the south bay. officers say a woman in her late 20s was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of highway 17. she hit another car and was killed. the other driver was taken to the hospital and was conscious and walking around. chp says at this time it doesn't appear that drugs or alcohol were involved. all lanes have reopened. >> amazingly, no residual delays for that problem. we have traffic backed up towards 380. a crash on the dunbarton bridge

kidnapper's car and chased him down giving police crucial information to stop him. the couple will join us live in a moment. first, will reeve is here with the dramatic story. what a story it is, will. >> reporter: it really is, michael. the couple, they were out getting dinner when they saw a blue honda civic. they knew that charlotte moccio was missing because of an amber alert and they were certain they had found the car she had been abducted in. they went after it, risking their own safety to help save a young girl. >> they're trying to lose me. they're trying to ditch me. >> reporter: this morning, the couple who played a vital role in the rescue of an 11-year-old who was kidnapped in broad daylight speaking out. amanda disley and her husband benny correa were driving with their family wednesday night in springfield, massachusetts, aware of reports that 11-year-old charlotte moccio was forced into a blue honda reportedly kicking and screaming and then benny saw it. >> i said, babe, that's that car. that's that car. i seen that car. you showed me that car. that's the car. >> reporter: they pulled up a post on social media to confirm and started to follow him. disley started to record the

chase on her phone, calling 911. >> he's blowing through red lights. he's blowing through red lights. >> reporter: the couple not giving up even with their own five kids in their car. >> that's him. >> it's him. >> reporter: getting close enough to the suspect that they could give police the license plate number. only stopping their pursuit when they ran out of gas. local police praising the public for their help. >> this was an absolute life and death situation for this little girl. thank you to the public for helping us out, and it has come to a very good conclusion. >> reporter: the suspected kidnapper, 24-year-old miguel rodriguez, was arrested and is being held without bail. charlotte's family said in a statement, quote, we'd like to thank amanda disley and her husband for their vigilance and courage, for putting themselves in harm's way to make sure she wasn't out of their sight. they are eternally grateful for everyone who helped. >> we all haare for that, and

we're joining them exclusively from springfield, amanda disley and benny correa. thanks for joining us this morning. let's go back to the beginning. how did you know this was the suspect's car? >> earlier that day my wife had showed me the car on facebook stating that the girl had got abducted. so as i was getting dinner, i seen the car, but the only reason why i seen the car was because i was going to take a right instead of the left to go home because i live behind the store that i was in, but the store that i was in didn't have what i was looking for, so i was going across the street to get the soda, and instead of going across the street to get the soda, the car crossed in front of me. instead of going across the street to get the soda, the car crossed in front of me. instead of taking that hard left i took a hard right, i cut off people and i got up close to the car. i noticed that it was a blue civic. i know my cars very well. everyone in springfield can tell you i know my cars very well, and i just pursued him. i had to do what i had to do being a father. i just chased him down. >> i know -- i know you guys called the authorities, you called 911. amanda, you were on the phone with 911 with the dispatcher the entire time. what were they telling you? >> they were asking me if i can get a plate number and what was happening.

every street that i was on, my husband was really frantic and then it made me frantic, so she was just telling me, you know, it was okay. it was understandable to be frantic. just tell us where you are, what street you're going down, and while she's getting the questions from us, i can hear her relaying it to people, go here. go this way. she was awesome. >> she communicated well with your wife and your wife communicated well with you so you could do what you did but there has been some criticism from some who said they were running red lights, chasing him and they had their own kids in the car. so how do you respond to that? >> what's really bothering me is that it was just an instinct of fight or flight that kicked in because when we approached the vehicle, we approached it really quietly, and we checked the front of the car to see if it matched the pictures from what james posted from western mass and the state police and it said that it had no front plate. we noticed the front lip, the

fog lights, the dark tints, the wheels. the wheels were very distinctive, and we had a gut feeling it was the car, and when he noticed we noticed him, that's when he started driving crazy, and we just wanted to get the plates and get 911 to say, hey. he's over here, but when we got under a light, we saw something getting pushed down in the backseat. when you see somebody's life in danger, it's either we call 911 and say, they're on this road and here's the plates, or do you go? when my husband ran a red light in the video, it shows we slowed down and cars passed and we went after cars passed. no cars were next to hitting us. we would never put our kids' lives in danger. that would never happen. if that was the case, we wouldn't have lost him.

>> amanda and benny, i know the parents, they are very happy that you were able to reunite them with their daughter. what you did is what you said, fight or flight, and you did what you felt was right and ended up turning out great for that family so they could be reunited and we just want to thank you for your time and great lesson to pay attention to amber alerts. thank you, guys, so much. george? we turn to the strange story of a woman who killed her husband by poisoning him with eye drops. she pled guilty on thursday sentenced to 25 years in prison. now we're hearing from her husband's family. diane macedo spoke with them. >> reporter: this morning a south carolina woman is sentenced to over 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing her husband with eye drops. >> i am truly sorry. >> reporter: prosecutors say motivated by greed, nurse lana clayton secretly poisoned her wealthy husband by putting eye drops in his water for three days, taking his computer and phone so he couldn't call for help. >> he laid there helpless thursday and friday, waking up periodically from his misery thirsty, drinking more water.

including that breaking news overnight. the missile attacks on u.s. forces, we've now learned u.s. troops were injured. let's go back to abc's martha raddatz in washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. in fact, 11 u.s. service members have now been evacuated from iraq to medical facilities in germany and kuwait because of worsening symptoms due to signs of traumatic brain injury and concussion. the military saying in a statement that while no u.s. service members were killed in the january 8th iranian attack on al asad air base, several were treated for concussion symptoms from the blast and are still being assessed. on the night of the iranian missile attacks and the days immediately following, president trump and pentagon officials had said there were no injuries from the iranian missile strikes and that the damage was only minimal. the military does say the evacuation of those forces is being made out of an abundance of caution and that it is hoped those injured will be returned to duty. george. >> okay, martha, thanks very much. now to that headline about a dramatic increase in binge

drinking across the u.s. finding people who are binging are drinking even more potentially facing serious health risks. dr. jennifer ashton is going to talk to us about this. what does the cdc report say? >> this is continued focus from a public health perspective on alcohol consumption. they did a deep dive on it, the who, what, when and where, definition, the definition of binge drinking is for men consuming five or more drinks in a single occasion. for women, that's four or more. over the six, seven-year period, overall the trend across the country went up slightly. when you looked at the amount of alcohol, the number of drinks consumed by people who binge drink, take a look at these numbers. it went from 472 over the course of a year to 529. this is per binge drinker so the amount, the quantity, is going up dramatically. >> is it the amount or is it the time that you drink? >> that's the important question, robin.

[ applause ] looking good. looking good. we are back now with a project i'm really excited to share with all of you, my first film for lifetime "stolen by my mother" the kamiyah mobley story, airs tomorrow night. immediately following the movie is a documentary where you're going to meet the real-life people who inspired the film including kamiyah herself who was kidnapped at birth. she was just eight hours old. when i sat down with her she described the moment she first found out that gloria williams had abducted her and later going online to learn more about her biological mother. >> i left when she told me that. i didn't leave in a rage. i just kind of left like let me

process this a little bit. >> how were you able to keep it a secret once gloria told you the truth that she was not your biological mother? >> you know, you just like -- having another out of body experience like, hold up, maybe i just heard that from tv. maybe you didn't tell me that. i don't know what happened there. people make it seem like i was protecting her but you got to understand you're telling a 16-year-old this so what do i do? >> you did try and find out about yourself. didn't you go online? >> i sure did. >> you were able to find shanara's phone number. >> i was curious, yes. i can't remember the exact thing i said but she was like, hello? she answered like she does now and she asked, who is this? and i hung up. >> after dna tests proved conclusively she was kamiyah mobley stolen from a jacksonville hospital years earlier, police arrested gloria williams and charged her with the kidnapping. authorities gave kamiyah a

first a look at her story. she is an artist. and a junior black belt. but 13-year-old aniah echols feels most at home on the football field. >> what i like about playing on this team is being with other teammates that go through the same thrill, the same excitement as you and getting to talk about it later. >> aniah is the first female to play for the oxford middle school chargers. >> they sent a flier out at the end of her sixth grade year. she asked me could she do it. i asked if she's sure. she said, mama, i can do this. >> so far i'm excited because i have not seen any failures for the semester. >> reporter: at first she received some raised eyebrows. >> it was odd to see a female walking into the meeting for football, and the coach was surprised. my fellow classmates were surprised. i was surprised because i was like, i'm doing this, finally. >> she faced adversity due to

being the only girl on the team. it didn't take very long for them to see that she came to play. and she didn't mind knocking who she needed to down. >> reporter: she tried out for quarterback but then found her place as a right tackle on the offensive line. her favorite part is the hit. >> it felt really good because i've never felt this kind of hit before so it wasn't that bad. it was really fun. >> is that enough? >> watching aniah the very first game, i guess i was sitting on pins and needles but she wasn't getting hit. she was doing the hitting. i was like, wow. she looked like a football player. >> aniah wants all women to feel empowered to follow their dreams. >> my advice to other females is to keep going when people tell you to stop. know that you may be one woman but you are so much more in other ways. if you want to do something, do it. why not?
