avalanche this morning. authorities identified the victim as a man from a nearby town of only a couple dozen people. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. >> the avalanche happened at alpine meadows. christen all rig christen. >> reporter: the avalanche happened this morning near here in this area. we have that marked in red. it is an advanced ski area, but that's not the back country. the ski resort specifies it was between promise land and scott chair and within an open area of the resort. the skier was pronounced dead at the scene. they say the 34-year-old was from a small town in california with just a few dozen people

>> thank you. alpine meadows received over two of feet of snow. >> conditions are calm, but over the sierra, although the weather is calm, there's a lot of snow on the ground from just 24 hours. look at some of these totals. 26 inches of snow at tahoe. several locations we see more than two feet of snow in just a 24 hour period. north star, 22 inches. tahoe at 20 inches. it's a heavy blanket of snow on the grounds and on the slopes and that's the concern right now is the possibility of avalanche. i'll give you a closer look at our weather and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. we have developing news of an ongoing situation in santa cruz. for hours police have been at an apartment building negotiating with a man who kidnapped his

1-year-old daughter this morning. we are live at the scene with the latest. >> reporter:olshe madeontact wi suspect and at this point they believe the child is doing okay. if you look behind me, you can see the heavy police presence here at this intersection. law enforcement from multiple agencies are on scene supporting santa cruz police in their efforts to bring this to a peaceful end. police tell us the suspect kidnapped his daughter from his estranged girlfriend at a nearby hotel around 5:00 this morning. family members say they believe there was an altercation between the two adults. the suspect fled the room and went to a friend's apartment nearby. this has been the scene on second street throughout the day. police tell us they have negotiators and a team in place and have been using drones suec aba.them to

own hands today during a break in at his house. he opened fire at the burglar. >> the incident happened around 10:00 this morning. police received a call reporting someone broke into a house. >> that's when the man grabbed a gun and fired shots toward that area. police say the owner wasn't shush if sure if he hit the suspect. a well known figure has passed away. he died today in his sleep at his home. he was renowned for his progressive values and controversial practices. he served two terms before being elect the district attorney in 1996. he pushed for rehab and treatment programs instead of incarceration. he called himself america's most progressive district attorney. perhaps one of his most infamous moves was in 2002 when he indicted the police department's

entire command staff accusing them of a coverup. that ended in political embarrassment. the mayor praised him as a dedicated public servient saying he was fierce in his pursuit of justice and his love for the city. he was simply put a true san francisco legend. a gas leak shut section of downtown san jose this afternoon, about a block away from city hall. some buildings were evacuated. people had to shelter it took three areas to contain the leak. letters were sent warning of an attack this sunday. we are live with the interview you'll see only on 7.

david. >> reporter: this is clearly a disturbing story for everyone involved. this is the church whose members were the subject of threatening hand written notes that were delivered here over a 12-day period. the suspect is a former minister here and he admitted to me that he sent those threatening notes, but you'll also see that he has lapses in memory when i asked him about why he did it and what he did. sheriff's deputies were armed as they arrived to arrest the minister. the minister is accused of sending letters threatening violence to the church two blocks away from his home. did you do that? >> yeah. >> reporter: you did do that. >> r did you do that? >> it was personal. >> reporter: we interviewed the reverend. the retired pastor is accused of

threatening gun violence against the church and members. he was an interim pastor there many years ago. >> he was seen on surveillance footage from the church hand delivering them and since he was a former member he was identified by members of the church as being the suspect. >> reporter: the reverend said he was upset at the pastor. >> he wasn't supportive of us when my wife had cancer. we were going through that period of time. >> reporter: he said his wife of 47 years died about two years ago. they lived here for decades. while the reverend said he sent the letters, he seemed to have lapses in memory during follow up questions. >> did i make threats? yeah. >> reporter: what were those threats you were claiming you would do? >> well,

i want to give you an update on the breaking news that you just saw minutes ago here live. a 1-year-old girl has been rescued after police say her father kidnapped her this morning. the standoff with the suspect had lasted for hours, but as you can see there the little girl was just released. investigators tell us the suspect kidnapped his daughter from his estranged girlfriend at a nearby hotel around 5:00 this morning. we're not sure about his status, but the girl appears to be okay and is in the arms of her family. a woman was killed this morning after driving the wrong way on the freeway for at least five miles. the chp says someone called to report the woman driving woman had crashed head on into

another car. the wrong way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver of the other car was taken to the hospital with injuries including broken bones. officers say it is a warning to everyone. >> we have to pay attention where we're getting on the freeway. a lot of times people are going to work late so we have to make sure to pay attention to the signs. >> the chp is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved. it's an all too familiar sight in the bay area, broken glass on the ground from a smash and grab. a victim says good intent on the part of a city agency reunited her with her backpack. abc 7 news tell us the rest of te story. >> i literally came here and stood just like this and the window was not there and there was just such a mess. they call it diamonds. >> reporter: vanessa was working the night of december 18th when her backpack was stolen in a smash and grab. a backpack that contained a

wallet filed with gift cards, an iphone and a folder of papers for refinancing her mortgage. that same night ambassadors with uptown, downtown benefit districts found her backpack. >> i seen a backpack. it was tucked behind a bush. so i pulled it out and i seen that it had a lot of contents in there. >> reporter: the next day after detective work the victim was reunited with her backpack and paperwork. >> he says here you go. i tried to hand him money. i wanted -- he said no, no, no. he goes i can't accept that. so i jumped out of the car. i was filled with emotion and gratitude and i just went up to him and i held his hand and i said thank you, thank you so much. >> reporter: the stolen property using social media. they do cleanups. they plant landscaping along an

it's going to be mild and dry. it's pretty mild and dry at the moment. here is a look at live doppler 7. we have calm weather. this is a view from the tower showing a few clouds over the bay. it is 53 degrees here in the city. mid 50s in partly cloudy skies looking westward. napa 51. fairfield and concord upper 40s. one more live view looking down at ocean beach and these are our forecast features. we'll see chilly inland valley conditions overnight with a chance of patchy fog as well. it will be remaining dry, the weather will, through the weekend, but rain returns early next week. let's look at the snow pack over the sierra. we had that snow yesterday. you might be wondering where we stand in terms of percentage of

normal snow pack. statewide we're at 80% of average. that's not so bad. there's likely to be more snow before the season is over. back to the bay area here. our forecast animation taking us through the overnight hours. we'll see the passage of high clouds, but no rain expected and early tomorrow morning we'll have high clouds, but it looks like a bright start to the day tomorrow and the weekend. on we go to look at overnight conditions. it will be really chilly in the inland valleys. lows will drop into the low to mid 30s. in the north bay valleys, up to mid 30s. around the bay shoreline lows will drop down to about 40s. tomorrow look for another relatively cool day like today. hazy sunshine with high temperatures around 55 degrees in most locations, but about to 58 at santa rosa and san jose about 58 degrees as well. let's look ahead to sunday, the day that larry is most concerned about and many of us are as a
