standoff. it took place live on abc 7 news at 4:00. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> police had been negotiating with the kidnapper all day long. that man is the girl's father. >> the father now arrested? >> reporter: that's right. the standoff came to an end about an hour ago. santa cruz police had been out here on second street since about 5:30 this morning. i want you to take a look at this video. we were on the air live during this incredible moment as the child was carried out by her maternal grandmother. you can see the two of them escorted by the police. the grandmother played a huge role in helping with the negotiations. police say this started when the suspect kidnapped his daughter from his estranged girlfriend at a nearby motel. family members say there had been some sort of altercation between the two adults.

the suspectlee d defrnd's which led to hours of negotiations. family members and police glad to see this end in a safe manner. >> i just yelled and screamed for joy that she's safe and we know she's going to be okay and she's back with us again. >> this is why you become a police officer, to do these kinds of things where you bring safety to a community and help rescue a child. it worked out perfectly. our officers did a wonderful job. >> reporter: police calling that grandmother a hero tonight. i want to show you this new video captured as the baby was reunited with the rest of her family. this has been an agonizing day for all of them. we were with them for most of it watching and waiting for any new information. again, we are glad to report

taken into custody on charges related to kidnapping, child endangerment and domestic violence. back here live, we have learned that the mother is currently at a trauma center where she is expected to undergo surgery for her injuries. we're live tonight in santa cruz. afr >> thank you. now to tragedy on the slopes. a skier is dead after an avalanche this morning at a resort near tahoe. it happened around 10:15 this morning west of lake tahoe. the avalanche happened in an advanced ski area, but not the back country. important to point out. wayne is on his way to the scene right now and joins us live from the road. >> reporter: good evening. we're on interstate 80. let's show you the view out the

front. this is interstate 80 at the moment. it is clear. it has been bumper-to-bumper coming up here. what happened here must weigh heavily on the minds. the skier was pronounced dead at the scene according to officials. they say the 34-year-old lived in california in a small town of a few dozen people north of tahoe. a second male skier suffered severe injuries to his lower body. he was taken to a hospital. public safety radio. >> alpine meadows avalanche.ava. >> ski patrol requesting two ground ambulances, two confirmed patients, avalanche. requesting a snowmobile. >> reporter: sea that area minu

that avalanche. >> all right. sorry, you're breaking up. alpine meadows described as north america's first a level avalanche areas and records the largest number of avalanches of any ski resorts in the united states. the skier was pronounced dead at the scene. officials say the 34-year-old was from a small town of a few dozen people in california north of tahoe. a second male skier suffered severe injuries to his lower body. he was taken to the hospital. a public safety radio dispatch audio gives you an idea of the rush to get to these men. wayne will have more for us as the evening progresses and a live report on news at 11:00. search crews scoured that area and they're continuing to try to figure out exactly why this

happened. they are investigating now as to what caused this avalanche. we want to let you know there's been a history of sorts with at least one other avalanche that was recorded in 1982 at alpine meadows. that one took the lives of seven people. it is the deadliest avalanche in history. the only survivor talked about the rescue. >> one of the guys had knocked some of the snow down off of one of the lockers and i went to grab for the snow because i was eating snow to keep from getting too dehydrated and he saw my hand and that's how he found me. the dog found me first. >> did you ever give up hope? >> no. >> a portion of her leg and her

toes on her left foot fwere los to frostbite. she married and raised two children and continues to ski. alpine meadows is considered an a level avalanche area. it records the largest numbers of avalanches. hours from now travelers will be screened for a new and potentially deadly virus. sfo sees the most travelers from china, a major transportation and business hub where the virus was first identified last month. we are live at the airport with the latest on the story. >> reporter: good evening. about 15,000 to 20,000 passengers arrive on international flights every day here, but only a small number come from the city in china. spe with passeer who arrived here. they said they did have their temperatures checked before they boarded flights to the u.s., but

sfo will start screening passengers tomorrow when the first direct flight arrives here from the area. starting saturday passengers arriving from china may face extra screening at sfo, especially those on direct flights from the city. >> we're applying necessary measures. >> reporter: a spokesperson says upon arrival passengers will be sent to a special screening area and interviewed and checked by officials. anyone with symptoms of the virus will be sent to local hospitals. >> we're talking about a maximum of about 175 people that would be involved in this. they're going to be diverted into a separate area from everyone else. we're expecting this to effect the overall arrival activity. >> reporter: it may not impact other travelers, but the outbreak is raising concerns for passengers. >> i'm do a lot of business in seoul. he's worried about the virus. >> it is not that transparent. they're not dealing with those kind of things. they try to hide it.

>> reporter: lee who arrived from beijing says she's not concerned. she remembers the outbreak in china a few years ago. she says her government of capable of containing the spread. >> i think our doctor is very great. the past several years ago we are fine. >> reporter: the cdc says they have been in touch with chinese officials about what precautions they're taking before they let passengers board flights to the u.s. the cdc also says if the situation gets worse, it will expand the number of u.s. airports that are doing screenings as well. reporting live, abc 7 news. >> thank you. politics and presidential aspirations. >> a as mike bloomberg visits with the mayor.
