at alpine meadows, the skiing community is mourning the death of one of their own tonight. in an avalanche. police on the lookout for a burglary suspect who was shot out by a homeowner. fai'll let you know if it's going to be a winning forecast. now, news to build a better bay area. from abc 7. >> it was chaos, chaos today out here. a lot of kids. so it's just sad, though. >> developing news out of oakland tonight. a mother was killed by a hit and run driver on the way to pick up her daughter at school. >> it happened this afternoon around 3:20. lauren martinez has the story. >> just really sad, though.

>> reporter: 3:15 friday afternoon, a mother walking across the cross walk in front of elmhurst middle school was killed by a hit and run driver. >> the car sped off and left her, you know, on the ground. i don't know how many kids were outside, could have been a hundred or more. a lot of them saw what happened. >> reporter: school staff says it's not uncommon for drivers to speed here on 98th avenue. >> with traffic being backed un, kids out, you have to slow down. >> reporter: police are looking for the driver responsible. >> the vehicle is a newer nissan maxima, white in color and damage to the peassenger side windshield. >> we need people to s down this would be someone that you love, and now their life is over. >> reporter: in oakland, lauren martinez, "abc7 news." >> and late tonight, the coroner wentdyed the woman killed.

and a skier is dead after an avalanche this morning in a ski resort near tahoe. >> we're learning new details from his wife about his passion for the snow. the avalanche happened about 10:15 just west of lake tahoe. >> wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: at alpine meadows tonight, quiet broken only by the sound of grooming snowplows. a day began with the best of ties and finished with the worst. >> alpine meadows avalanche. >> reporter: when they alarm sounded, it may have been too late for skiers up above. witnesses saw both men racing to beat the avalanche. there was nothing they could do. >> looked over to the right and saw the slide start to go. we yelled for anybody who was in the area to clear,ue meeople didn'tak it out in time. >> reporter: one skier survived with extreme injuries.

and cole comstock perished. >> the area they were in was not a prohibited area, but it is an advanced area for skiers. >> reporter: later in the day, his wife spoke with reporters by telephone about how much he loved skiing and life and people. >> very savvy skiing, a strong skiing, and he loved skiing. t it was a complete fluke. >> reporter: today's avalanche was not the first here. those slopes have a history. in march of 1982, an avalanche killed seven people and left one woman buried alive for five days. alpine records the largest number of avalanches of any ski resort in the united states and has an aggressive program to maintain the safety of these slopes. >> i know that she was doing the thing that he loved, and i know that he didn't suffer. >> reporter: cole comstock was

34 years old. wayne freedman, "abc7 news." >> so here's another look at alpine meadows ski resort. the avalanche happened in this area you see right here. that's between scott chute and scott chair. this is considered an advanced ski area but not the back country. so what were the weather conditions like. sandhya? >> there was considerable avalanche danger just 15 hours ago. we have a snow pack that's in place, and then last night, all the way through the wee hours of the morning, the snow was piling up. this is taking you back in time. this morning, the snow began to ease, but it was still snowing in the mountains. i want to show you how much fell. tahoe donner, 26 inches. 20 inches in sierra tahoe.

owned by uc. in the north bay, neighbors are on edge after a homeowner shot at a suspected burglar. it happened this morning at 10:00 a.m. cornell bernard is on the story. >> it's interesting that the neighbor was armed and took defensive action. >> reporter: some neighbors are praising the actions of a homeowner who called 911 to report a suspected burglar was trying to break in. >> as we were responding to the call, we received additional information that the homeowner opened fire. >> reporter: police say the homeowner told them he fired at a man who had broken a window. the suspect described as a stocky man in his 50s, took off. possibly driving a silver station wagon. >> we did to the see anything that would tell us that the suspect was injured. >> frightening.

now developments near los angeles. parents packed a meeting to express their acnger after thei children were doused with jet line fuel. a group of teachers sued delta today. more than 60 adults and children needed medical attention. first delta said the pilots followed normal procedures. now delta is not commenting. the former san francisco supervisor terrence halliman died in his slemo critics point to him having the lowest conviction rate of any d.a. in california.
