10:15 just west of lake tahoe. >> wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: at alpine meadows tonight, quiet broken only by the sound of grooming snowplows. a day began with the best of ties and finished with the worst. >> alpine meadows avalanche. >> reporter: when they alarm sounded, it may have been too late for skiers up above. witnesses saw both men racing to beat the avalanche. there was nothing they could do. >> looked over to the right and saw the slide start to go. we yelled for anybody who was in the area to clear, but i guess some people didn't make it out in time. >> reporter: one skier survived with extreme injuries. and cole comstock perished. >> the area they were in was not a prohibited area, but it is an advanced area for skiers. >> reporter: later in the day,

his wife spoke with reporters by telephone about how much he loved skiing and life and people. >> very savvy skiing, a strong skiing, and he loved skiing. t it was a complete fluke. >> reporter: today's avalanche was not the first here. thosepe history. in march of 1982, an avalanche killed seven people and left one woman buried alive for five days. alpine records the largest number of avalanches of any ski resort in thes an aggressive pr maintain the safety of these slopes. >> i know that she was doing the thing that he loved, and i know that he didn't suffer. >> reporter: cole comstock was 34 years old. wayne freedman, "abc7 news." >> so here's another look at alpine meadows ski resort. the avalanche happened in this area you see right here.

the experts say they now have a feature, reflectors that rescuers can detect under the snow. >> definitely a peace of mind thing as far as i can tell. it makes me feel safer. if anything happens, somebody can find me quick. >> bruce major says today's avalanche makes him sad but won't stop him from doing what he loves and it prompted his mother to check all him and che his safety precautions. police clearing a homeless camp this evening. this marks the latest confrontation at people's park owned by uc. in the north bay, neighbodg shot at a suspected burglar.

it happened this morning at 10:00 a.m. cornell bernard is on the story. >> it's interesting that the neighbor was armed and took defensive action. >> reporter: some neighbors are praising the actions of a homeowner who called 911 to report a suspected burglar was trying to break in. >> as we were responding to the call, we received additional information that the homeowner opened fire. >> reporter: police say the homeowner told them he fired at a man who had broken a window. the suspect described as a stocky man in his 50s, took off. possibly driving a silver station wagon. >> we did to the see anything that would tell us that the suspect was injured.igeng. >> reporter: marsha snyder was searching her garage for anything out of place, while others worried about the possibility of more break-ins. >> makes her nervous. >> reporter: this isn't the

first time. police are seeing an increase inburg rays. these men caught on security camera are wanted for a recent burglary. authorities believe the same group broke into another house in marinwood. police can't say if that crew is attempted ed connected to the break-in here. >> we watch out for each other. >> reporter: the home owner who fired at the suspect is not expected to face weapons charges. he declined to speak with us. cornell bernard, "abc7 news." in the south bay, a 1-year-old girl in santa cruz is safe after her father kidnapped her this air as that child was reunited with her maternal grandmother. investigators say brian sellen kidnapped his daughter. once police tracked him down, he refused to come out for ma co t scene to help with negotiations.

of your writing room. >> yeah. >> and you stunned the world, it seemed, when you said that's your writing room. and the only person in that writing room is mr. tyler perry. >> yeah. >> some people took issue with it -- "well, why don't you hire writers?" and you were just capturing how you got to where you are and how you create. >> well, what i thought i was doing was being encouraging because i laid out -- i laid out all the scripts that i had written, and it's like, you know, "work ethic, work hard, work hard." >> right. >> but then i get all this backlash from people going, "the reason your shows are so bad -- 'cause you write everything yourself," and, "you should have --" i mean, it's all this kind of stuff. but here's the thing. i had a writers' room very early on for some of my shows, and a lot of times the scripts -- it's a long story that i'll tell one day. >> yeah. >> but a lot of times, the scripts would be turned in, and i would be very unhappy with them, so i would end up having to rewrite them. and even if i let the writers put them on, my audience -- they know my voice.
