>> it all involves this guy, right? we'll give you a sense of how classy it is. >> it is a secret and yet we let millions of americans in on it. >> they're in a room with no tv. first, though, the news we're keeping an eye on this morning. a major winter storm making its way across the country. abc's kaylee hartung is in detroit with the impact we're seeing right now. kaylee, good morning. >> reporter: and good morning again, whit. the snow is steady here in detroit. it's coming down about an inch an hour in detroit. we are expecting about eight inches to accumulate here, and the winds are starting to pack a punch. gusts up to 35 miles per hour as this massive and fast-moving storm wreaks havoc across the country. millions of americans are at risk from the northern plains to new england. road conditions are treacherous in these blizzard-like conditions causing multiple trucks to jackknife making the roads impassable for drivers.

in iowa, there was acary scene as a truck slid off the road and narrowly missed officials who were already on the scene for another incident there. and there are challenges in the air for travelers as well. this morning hundreds of flights have already been canceled. chicago's o'hare airport hit particularly hard. i know it took me longer to get to detroit last night than it was supposed to. this storm moving east now with its heavy snow and rain. you guys in new york, stay safe and warm. dan. >> kaylee, thank you. we appreciate you being out there in the elements and bringing us the news. now though to new screenings going into effect at three major airports here in the united states. they're screening passengers coming in from china in an effort to prevent the spread of a virus outbreak there from coming here. abc's stephanie ramos is at jfk airport in new york with much more. stephanie, good moing. >> reporter: hey, dan, good morning. here at jfk health officials started screening passengers last night who were coming off of a flight from wuhan, china. they were checking to see if they showed any signs of this new deadly respiratory virus

called the coronavirus. cdc health officials say it's making dozens of people sick and has already killed two. now, the cdc is sending 100 health officials to three airports here in the u.s. san francisco international airport, l.a.x. and right here, jfk. screenings will consist of taking people's temperatures and asking them if they have any symptoms. experts say this new type of virus typically causes symptoms of the common cold but can lead to pneumonia. the cdc says patients infected were exposed to live animals adding that it's still unclear if the new virus can be spread easily from person to person. now, you may remember years ago there was an outbreak of deadly coronaviruses. they were called sars and mers and then in 2014, health officials screened passengers at airports for ebola, but right now the cdc says the risk to americans is low, but they're taking every precaution they can right now. eva. >> all right, stephanie ramos for us, thank you.

and it's a big night tonight for our robin roberts. she's the executive producer of the lifetime film "stolen by my mother: the kamiyah mobley story" that airs tonight. it's based on the real-life story of a woman who kidnapped a newborn from a florida hospital and raises her as her own. following the film robin will introduce us to the real people including kamiyah who tells us how she's doing now three years after that story made national headlines. take a look. >> it's hard to believe in some ways that it's been three years since people heard the news that you had been kidnapped at birth and the woman that you thought was your mother, gloria williams, actually was not your biological mother. >> a baby allegedly snatched from the hospital 18 years ago has been found alive. the child, she's now a teenager and the woman who raised her now behind bars, but as you can imagine, there are some complicated emotions.

>> tell us about these three years. >> when it first happened, well, that was the hardest part because now i'm like, okay, now i got to figure out a way to provide for myself. emotionally it's been a little roller coaster. >> what has been the lowest point for you? >> i didn't know it was out on the news. i didn't watch the news. you know what i'm saying? it's me everywhere. >> alexis openly sobbing seeing her mom now behind bars. >> i'm not used to being that vulnerable in front of millions of people, so it's like -- but i've never felt that low since then. >> i mean, that's so much to have to take in at such a young age. i know it's not easy to be vulnerable. >> honestly i'll say that because i kind of hide it real well. >> you know, she's scared. she's upset because gloria was her mom, but at the same time she kidnapped her.

today where he'll receive some much needed medical care adding this is the beginning of his weight loss journey finishing with a #bodypawsitive but he does have a new home soon. they're hoping he drops 20 to 25 pounds. >> definitely, i mean, body positive for sure. i'm all for body positivity but you don't want to overfeed your animals. >> too much chick-fil-a for bazooka. >> definitely not the -- although bazooka is pretty cute. oceanic belly, i love it. well, now to our "gma" cover story. the department of agriculture proposed changes to what foods schools can serve. the senate proposals offer the department said in a statement more flexibility to serving appetizing and healthy meals that appeal to their students' preferences and subsequently reduce food waste. but opponents say that means fewer vegetables and more junk food. here to tell us what it all actually means, dr. ashton. welcome back. thank you for being with us. >> you're welcome. >> you have a degree in nutrition. >> yep. >> what does all of this mean? >> this is a complicated story,

eva, and i think potentially there is a lot at stake. the american heart association put out a statement saying that these changes are unnecessary and put children's health at risk. i think when you realize what the goal is when you talk about children and nutrition, it's to expose kids to a variety of foods, a lot of color in the form of the fresh fruits ideally and vegetables and we're talking about a program that serves 30 million school-aged children and 99,000 schools so the stakes are high because the number is so high. >> so you think about the stuff kids like to eat, burgers, pizza, fries. >> mac and cheese. >> those are unhealthy. >> even big kids. >> listen, the key, you heard me say it before, most things in moderation. those things can be healthy if you're making sweet potatoes fries, whole wheat bun. but that's not the reality when you're talking about school foods so, again, we're not saying never eat those foods but kids are in school almost 50% of the day, so they need to be eating healthy foods. >> what advice to parents.

>> i think we have to lead by example when you're talking about nutrition. if possible try to send some healthy snacks with your kids and also talk to your kid's school and see if the changes are coming to your child's school. >> is ketchup a vegetable? >> there you go. >> sometimes. >> yes, sometimes. >> depends how much sugar in it. right? >> yes. >> thank you so much, dr. ashton. now to screen time detox. trying to spend less time looking at your devices this year? rebecca jarvis is telling us how the whole family can break those screen habits in 2020. here's a look. ♪ once in a while >> reporter: screens are everywhere. in our homes, in our schools and for many of us in our own hands. >> 20 minutes here, 20 minutes there. i mean, that adds up to a big chunk of your day that you're scrolling on your phone. >> reporter: so many days, in fact, that the cdc says if you added up all the hours kids spent watching their screens for fun, it would total 114. >> even leisure activities that used to be about relaxing, now we have to document it and write a witty caption and check if people responded. that suddenly becomes like work

too. >> reporter: the acting of unplugging becoming a weekly tradition carried out by tiffany shlain and her family. >> my husband and i feel more productive afterwards. more creative. there's so many benefits. >> reporter: shlain's family including a 10-year-old and a 16-year-old daughter view the day as a time to recharge and reflect. even homework is off the agenda. >> board games, napping, reading, journaling, going to the library. there's so many great things you can do. >> reporter: but how do you convince your kids, especially those with teens, to get on board? tip one -- >> make the day a reward and so it's not what's being taken away but what you get back. >> reporter: tip two, have your kids create lists of things they want to do. >> everyone is going to have a different list and try to have the day be a combination of that whole list. >> reporter: and if your family isn't ready to take the 24-hour screenless plunge, shlain says you can start small

right at your kitchen table. >> no screens at the table, especially at dinner. you will feel just a lightness and an engagement that you haven't had in a while. >> reporter: for "good morning america," rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. >> i think it's a great idea and actually a year or so ago i had an expert come to my house and help me figure out how to do less screen time myself in the apartment, and one of the things she said is find a bed for your phone, she made my bed for my phone in my closet. >> put it away somewhere. >> so every time i'm home that's where the phone is so my son doesn't see me walking around it with the thing that much. >> it is a good idea. >> i do break the rules a lot. anyway, greg dutra from our chicago station is in for rob this morning. hey, greg. >> good morning. we are tracking blizzard conditions still in north dakota. it stopped snowing in north dakota. but this is video from yesterday where there's still blizzard conditions. they'll stay in effect all the way till 6:00 tonight even though it has stopped snowing because the winds are so strong. take a look at this storm. it will bring its first punch of wintry precipitation into the northeast by early this afternoon.

>> nice to see you. >> nice to see you. it's a new year. people are trying to start fresh. let's talk about intermittent fasting. this is one of the most searched diets on google. walk us through it here. >> so intermittent fasting has been around for a while in one shape or another. and it's fast emerging as one of those diets that's going to help your metabolic health. we even see lots of celebs like jennifer aniston and other a-listers engaging in this. always talking about how it's helped them and improved their relationship to food. >> what are the nuts and bolts about someone curious to start get going? >> at its simplest form time restricted feeding. what you're going to see is that the person fasting chooses an eating window. here we're showing eight hours then there's a fasting window of 12 hours or more. here we've listed 16 but this is just an example. can you actually help me take this to the other side? >> sure. >> perfect. >> here we go. >> definitely. then we move to alternate-day fasting. what you see on alternate days the faster reduces caloric intake significantly, wednesday and friday they'll have a low

caloric intake and thursday and saturday they're do a full feed. let's move on to the next one. then we see -- >> ripping the calendar apart. >> thank you so much. then we see the 5:2 diet. on two nonconsecutive days in the week they're going to fast. wednesday and friday you're fasting. thursday, saturday, sunday, monday you're not fasting so that's kind of a nuts and bolts. so one thing i do want to tell you is that for populations at risk you really shouldn't engage in intermittent fasting, people with eating disordering or medical conditions. my pro tip at its simplest form you'll fast when you sleep so don't overcomplicate it. >> important to note if people have medical conditions. >> exactly, absolutely. >> all right, on to our next thing. >> one of those mainstream diet trends is plant-based dieting. it's everywhere. >> yeah, it is everywhere. you know one of the reasons people love plant-based diets is that the health benefits that come along with it are unbelievable. we're seeing the market respond to this. you know, for example dunkin' doughnuts have the beyond meat burger.

i know. just this week the sweet earth foods came out with an awesome burger that's premiering at ruby tuesdays. even hard rock cafe has a plant-based option on their menu. >> so, how should people approach this if this is something they want to do? >> okay, so when we're thinking about the terms, we want to really clarify them. people who are vegan eat no animal proteins whatsoever. folks who are vegetarian may engage in eating eggs and dairy and now when we move on to the flexitarian, really, we're thinking about having plants at the center of the diet with animal proteins coming in little to none. so if we come over here, i'm going to show you some ways to kind of really incorporate these into your diet. >> this is dan's heaven right here. >> this is your heaven. enter the heaven. >> this looks awesome. >> doesn't it look incredible? >> he's been thinking about swiss chard all morning. >> let's have a bite, so we have kale. you're going to see some gorgeous legumes. this is my favorite. black rice. >> i do, too. >> i really think -- so good. really nutty. it's delicious so, you know, one of the things about following a plant-based diet it really can

welcome back to "gma." we have a lot more still ahead but first some of the news headlines we're following this morning. president trump assembling a high-profile defense team for his impeachment trial. former bill clinton prosecutor ken starr, harvard professor alan dershowitz and robert ray will help the president make his case from the senate floor. the senate impeachment trial is expected to begin on tuesday. also this morning, a masterpiece mystery. gustav klimt's "portrait of a lady" has been found. can you give me a good german pronunciation of that? >> klimt. >> yeah, gustav klimt. i am not sure it's even german. anyway, the piece was stolen from a museum in italy more than 20 years ago. turns out, it never left the gallery grounds. the art was found stashed inside a wall at the museum last month. >> still so much mystery and
