remain unaccounted for. >> reporter: overnight, new details about a shocking rampage near one of hawaii's most scenic locations. police say a man killed two police officers and sparked an inferno in this honolulu neighborhood not far from the famed diamond head state monument. >> it sounded like a shotgun-type gunshot, and we heard rapid gunfire shots after that, and after that, we started seeing the smoke. >> reporter: witnesses say it started when jerry hanel allegedly stabbed his landlord while trying to serve him an eviction notice. >> there was, like, five gunshots, sounded like pistol shots. >> reporter: investigators say he fired on authorities who responded to the stabbing killing those two officers. >> i'm deeply saddened to report the tragic loss of two of hpd's finest in a senseless and selfish act. >> reporter: police say hanel then set the house on fire with the flames spreading. a total of seven homes were

destroyed. >> the smoke just getting heavier and heavier and thicker and thicker and thicker. >> reporter: two other people were inside the homes that burned down. hawaii's governor tweeted about the deceased officers writing, as we express our condolences to their families, friends and colleagues, let us all come together to support those who have been forever changed by this tragedy. the police chief clearly shaken as she announced the officers' deaths. >> our deepest condolences go out to the families of officers tiffany enriquez and kaulike kalama. the hpd ohana grieves with you and shares your loss. >> a third police officer was hurt, but is expected to be okay. the landlord is being treated for injuries described as severe. and also breaking overnight, the hunt is on for the shooter behind the deadly attack along san antonio's popular river walk. someone opened fire during a concert at a club killing two people and wounding five others.

police say the shots were fired after an argument. investigators overnight said they're confident the suspect will be identified and arrested soon. we turn now to the impeachment showdown. president trump is calling democrats lunatics for impeaching him. his trial in the senate essentially begins tomorrow. members of his defense team are now outlining their strategy, including a high-profile attorney who argues the president should not be removed from office even if the democrats prove their claims against him. abc's elizabeth hur joins us from washington with the latest. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: kenneth, good morning, and yes, we are heading into the impeachment trial tomorrow and we still don't know if any new witnesses will be called with president trump's lawyer saying, there's no need. president trump in texas touting his achievements. >> we're achieving what no administration has ever achieved before. >> reporter: and blasting democrats. >> and what do i get out of it? tell me. i get impeached. that's what i get out of it.

identified overseas and there are fears it could be spread by people traveling in china to celebrate the upcoming lunar new year. the governor of puerto rico has now fired three top fir officials after a warehouse discovered filled with unused emergency supplies. baby formula and other essentials have been sitting untouched since hurricane maria two years ago, and they were just found as the island struggles to cope with a series of earthquakes this month. the governor says the supplies that are not expired will be sent to towns hit hardest by the earthquakes. and a different kind of emergency in canada. members of the canadian armed forces are arriving in newfoundland to help out from a record blizzard. it's being called the bomb cyclone blizzard. some areas got three feet of snow in one day, and more is on the way. >> that's a lot of snow. back here in this country, let's take a look now at your monday morning forecast. no big snowstorms today, but

it's bitterly cold in much of the country. it will feel like minus 15 in parts of iowa, minus 4 in minneapolis, even atlanta is feeling it with a windchill of 14 this morning. looking at today's high temperatures, atlanta will warm up to 40, and indianapolis will hit 17, kansas city, 14. great falls will be warmer than atlanta, and highs in the pacific northwest will be around 50. boston and new york won't get above freezing. let's go to miami where it's 70 and phoenix. coming up, the dentist who got in big trouble. what he was doing during surgery. but first, the developing news from virginia, the concern about violence erupting today at a gun rally at the capitol. the security now in place. caught on camera, what we're now learning about this collision between a fishing boat and a jet ski. and later, coco takes on venus in australia. and later, coco

back now with more violent clashes breaking out in beirut as protesters face off with riot police firing tear gas, water cannons and rubber puts. more than 100 people were injured. growing frustration over the financial crisis and delay in forming new government. security is extra tight today for a gun rights rally at the virginia state capitol where a state of emergency is in effect. a fence now surrounds the capitol with only one entrance point. guns are banned from the grounds today and everyone who will enter will be screened. virginia's governor is justifying the strict measures because of what he calls credible threats of violence. the rally's organizers calling on protesters to be peaceful. the nra has been distancing itself from the event. new safety questions are being raised at a california racetrack. a horse died sunday at santa anita park, the third horse death in three days.

protesters are calling for horse racing to be banned. 42 horses have now died in the last 13 months, but the track released a statement touting its overall safety rate. and we're hearing from the survivor of a jet ski collision that was caught on camera. mike higbee is the man on this jet ski. he was on vacation in the caribbean when he collided with a fishing boat at full speed. the crash left him bleeding, unconscious and facedown in the water. >> i knew there was going to be an impact. it was unavoidable, and my last memory when i lose consciousness is about five feet out right before impact. >> so a deck hand from a nearby yacht came to the rescue, jumping on a jet ski of his own, and pulling higbee to shore. higbee fractured six vertebrae and suffered a large cut on his forehead. he's expected to make a full recove recovery. a dentist from alaska is in trouble for what he did while treating a patient. seth lockhart was seen on video
