of service, and we'll hear how dr. king is inspiring young kids today. but my goodness, george, what a week it's shaping you to be in d.c. >> we begin with the latest on >> it sure is. we begin with the latest on the senate trial of president trump. both sides staking out dramatically different positions ahead of tomorrow's kickoff, is likely to be an all-out fight. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega tracking the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. we are just one day away now from history, only the third impeachment trial in history ever. we still don't know what this trial is going to look like. one thing is very clear this morning. president trump is bracing for the political fight of his life. overnight in texas, president trump lamenting his current fate. >> we're achieving what no administration has ever achieved before. and what do i get out of it? tell me. i get impeached. >> reporter: now this morning, his team previewing for the first time their legal strategy ahead of his trial in the senate. a six-page letter blasting the

impeachment as dangerous, poisonous, brazen and lawless. their main argument, they say the articles of impeachment are constitutionally and legally invalid be dent trump of a specific crime, and they call the impeachment, quote, a dangerous attack on the right of the american people to freely choose their president. his new legal team, a cast of washington who's who and tv personalities, including former independent counsel ken starr and harvard law professor alan dershowitz who already seemed to distance himself from the defense of the president. >> they say it's very clear the president did nothing wrong, and you're not willing to endorse that statement? >> i did not read that brief or sign that brief. that's not part of my mandate. my mandate is to present the constitutional argument, and if the constitutional argument succeeds, we don't reach that issue because you can't charge a president with impeachable conduct if it doesn't fit within the criteria for the

constitution. >> reporter: democrats unveiling their strategy too, saying that during the now infamous phone call with ukraine, president trump asked a foreign government to interfere in the race for 2020 by investigating his political rival. they say he then obstructed congress in what is, quote, part of the ongoing pattern of misconduct for which the president is unrepentant, and that president trump's conduct is the framers' worst nightmare writing, he must be removed from office. >> the facts aren't seriously contested. >> reporter: well, here's the facts -- the odds are not in democrats' favor, and the republican-controlled senate. they need four republicans to break ranks. george, you know this, the white house and republicans have made it very clear they want this trial over very quickly. they want it wrapped up by the president's state of the union on february 4th. >> that's their hope and that's what we're hearing from republican senators who have talked to mitch mcconnell about the rules, and the democrats haven't seen the rules yet which means tomorrow will be a huge fight. >> reporter: yeah. we are heading into tomorrow not

knowing a lot. here are the things we don't know -- whether there will be new witnesses allowed. the democrats are pushing really hard for this given the new evidence that has come out in these recent days. how long these days are going to last. some are suggesting we could be talking about, george, 12-hour days that go until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, and tomorrow as you said, this could be very heavy on process, very light on substance, a lot of arguing about the rules to come. >> and on a related front, cecilia, yesterday, when i was talking to chairman adam schiff who is the house lead manager and the chairman of the house intelligence committee, he confirmed and said that the intelligence community is not coming forward to brief the public and the congress on global security threats because they're afraid of contradicting president trump. >> reporter: exactly. it was a stunning admission. he's blaming the cia and the national security agencies saying they're withholding information about ukraine, as you said, out of the fear of angering the president. he said this is information that the senators could use or need to hear during the trial, and the republicans are saying the

democrats don't have the proof and that they already have what they need for tomorrow. >> cecilia vega, thank you. the impeachment trial begins tomorrow. i'll be anchoring with our entire political and legal team starting at 1:00 eastern. robin? as the impeachment trial ramps up, so of course, is the race for the white house. we are just two weeks away from the critical iowa caucuses, the first votes in the country. rachel scott is on the ground in des moines, iowa with the state of the race. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we are in the final stretch, and this is traditionally when all the candidates would be camped out in key early voting states, but that senate impeachment trial has scrambled the plans for the democratic senators in this race who are now forced to split their time between washington and the campaign trail. the democratic senators running for president blitzing through key early voting states and making their final pitch before that impeachment trial begins. >> it's mostly about getting out there any moment you can. i don't need much sleep. i can get by with very little sleep. >> reporter: the schedules for the four senators upended two

weeks ahead of the iowa caucuses. >> we've had to, needless to say, jiggle our schedule very significantly because i'll be spending a whole lot of time in d.c. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders bracing for a busy wednesday. after the trial, traveling 1,700 miles to make a nighttime rally in iowa, and then straight back to d.c. while those senators are serving as you jurors, their rivals will be making thaer kieir case to v. >> how critical is a win in the first two contests for your campaign? >> oh, i think it will do well. >> reporter: in this critical stretch, the two leading progressives are still facing questions in the fallout over that interpretation. >> i think you called me a liar on national tv? >> a what? >> i think you called me a liar on national tv? >> let's not do it now. >> do you think gender is an obstacle for female politicians? >> the answer is yes, but i think everybody has their own

set of problems. i'm 70 years of age. that's a problem. >> reporter: senator warren ready to put this to rest. >> i have no further comment on this. >> is being a woman a problem? >> i have been friends with bernie for a long time. >> reporter: a four-way race has emerged between the front-runners here in iowa, but not one single candidate has been able to consistently top the polls. robin, at this point it's still anyone's contest to win. >> it certainly is and this other headline i want to talk to you about. a "new york times" editorial board endorsing both warren and klobuchar? >> reporter: that's right, robin. "the new york times" editorial board met with several candidates and decided to back the two female senators in this race. senator klobuchar calling it an honor and senator elizabeth warren tweeting that the two women are now undefeated in both elections and "new york times" endorsements. robin? >> she's using that line. >> never seen that before. >> rachel, thank you. >> one from column a and one from column b. >> that's a first. t.j.? we turn from politics and we

need to head over to virginia where there's high alert this morning. thousands of people are expected to attend a gun rights rally in richmond minus the guns. the governor is declaring a state of emergency there which temporarily bans firearms and is citing credible threats of violence. victor oquendo is on the scene for us. good morning to you, victor. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. things just starting to pick up now. this line is long. it stretches all the way down the block. a lot of people have been here for two hours leading up to the one entrance here at the state capitol which just opened up. everybody who goes inside will be screened. we are expecting thousands of gun rights advocates and some extremist groups protesting new proposed gun legislation. local, state and federal law enforcement are all involved. ahead of this rally seven alleged white supremacists with ties to a neo nazi group "the base" have been arrested. the governor declaring a state of emergency and banning all weapons from capitol grounds.

now you can see this list of prohibited items, here at the top, firearms. while none of these are permitted on capitol grounds, where we're standing just outside, technically they are allowed. t.j.? >> no doubt, officials have learned some security lessons from charlottesville in 2017. >> reporter: absolutely, t.j. there's a much larger police presence, a tighter perimeter. communication between all agencies should be much better this time around, and of course that weapons ban is in place. t.j.? >> victor oquendo this morning, thank you so much. robin? t.j., also this morning we are following breaking news. deadly gunfire erupting in kansas city overnight outside a bar that was celebrating the chiefs' win. at least two people were killed, more than a dozen more injured. police believe the shooter is among the dead and an investigation is under way. and in honolulu we're learning new details about a shocking rampage there. a gunman shooting, killing two police officers and setting a house on fire, destroying multiple homes. kayna whitworth has that for us.

good morning, kayna. >> reporter: robin, good morning. authorities believe this all started with an eviction notice being served at one of hawaii's most popular tourist destinations, diamond head. today, the governor says the entire state is in mourning. the rampage began sunday morning. officers responding to a report of a stabbing inside a home in this affluent neighborhood near iconic waikiki beach. the suspect killing two officers before igniting a massive blaze responsible for engulfing neighboring homes, his whole house and potentially ending his life. when officers arrived on the scene, the suspect opened fire with what they believe was an ar-15 style rifle, shooting at least three officers, killing t finest. >> reporter: the violence reportedly sparked when

the suspect, identified as 69-year-old jerry hanel was being served with an eviction notice. hanel allegedly stabbed his landlord when she tried to evict him, later opening fire on his responding officers. >> they sounded like pistol shots. >> reporter: the suspect then allegedly setting fire to the home he was in, soon igniting a sprawling blaze, at least seven more homes completely destroyed by the out of control flames. a trail of smoke stretching for miles. >> at this time, there are three persons who are unaccounted for, including the suspect. >> reporter: this still under investigation. the atf and fbi are onnn authorities are also saying that they believe the suspect died, unable to escape the home that he set fire to. george? >> okay, kayna. thanks very much. we turn now to growing fears about a potentially deadly virus that sickened more than 200 people, left at least three dead in china. three u.s. airports in new york, l.a. and san francisco are now screening passengers trying to stop the spread. gio benitez is at jfk airport

with the details. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning to you. yeah, over the weekend several flights from wuhan, china landed right here at jfk. this morning there's a whole lot we don't know about this virus, including how it spreads. this morning, an all-out effort to keep a mysterious new virus out of the united states after chinese health officials reveal they have identified more than 200 cases of the so-called coronavirus that has already killed three people in asia. at least eight are hospitalized in serious condition. over the weekend, the cdc screening hundreds of passengers arriving from wuhan, china. chinese officials trying to prevent the spread too, using thermal technology and laser devices to screen passengers. here in america, the cdc sending about a hundred employees to jfk, l.a.x. and sfo to take temperatures and symptoms of the virus which at first can look like the common cold, the flu or even pneumonia.

will face off against san francisco 49ers' jimmy garoppolo who once played second string for the patriots under tom brady. garoppolo with two rings already under his belt. in san fran, wide receiver legend and former 49er, jerry rice, firing up the crowd, running down the length of the field in full suit and tie before the game. garoppolo and the niners jumping out to a commanding start over green bay and never looked back. the 49ers' super bowl hopes becoming a reality, fending off a late push by the packers. the niners cruising to a 37-20 victory. >> congratulations, 49ers. >> now garoppolo has two super bowl rings already, but remember those were earned as tom brady's back-up and there were plenty of jokes flying because he threw the ball only eight times in this game. the running game was strong. that's one of the fewest in playoff history, but one of those passes went to george kittle who -- look at this. he went to the press conference wearing this.

over the past few weeks. so i want you to hear the truth from me, as much as i can share, not as a prince or a duke, but as harry. >> reporter: overnight, a candid prince harry speaking out for the first time about his decision to step back as a senior member of the royal family. >> the decision that i have made for my wife and i to step back is not one i made lightly. it was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. and i know i haven't always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there was really no other option. >> reporter: a subdued harry telling the crowd at a fundraiser for a charity that he co-founded that the decision to step away from his role has given him great sadness. >> what i want to make clear is we're not walking away and we're certainly not walking away from you. our hope was to continue serving the queen, the commonwealth and my military associations, but without public funding. unfortunately, that wasn't possible. i've accepted this knowing that

it doesn't change who i am or how committed i am, but i hope that helps you understand what it had come to that i would step my family back from all i've ever known, to take a step forward into what i hope can be a more peaceful life. we are taking a leap of faith. so thank you for giving me the courage to take this next step. >> reporter: all this since buckingham palace announced a deal allowing harry and his wife to officially step out of the royal spotlight and become private citizens. on saturday, the palace revealed some details of the new arrangement, among them that he and meghan will no longer perform any public duties on behalf of the queen and won't use the royal highness title. >> there are still discussions going on in buckingham palace about whether they can use the sussex royal brand moving ty'r cashing in on their royal status. if they do have to start over, that means completely rebranding their instagram account, their website and any other commercial projects they're working on right now.

>> reporter: as part of the agreement, harry and meghan who had wanted financial independence won't receive any public funds and will now have to earn a living, though it's thought prince charles will continue to finiancially suppor them. they have to pay rent on frogmore cottage, the home they'll continue to use while in the uk, and they have to pay back $3.1 million of british taxpayer money spent renovating it before archie's birth. harry who thrived for years in the military -- >> it's easy to forget who i am when i'm in the army. i'm one in the guys and i don't get treated any differently. >> reporter: he'll no longer hold onto his military titles or his commonwealth youth ambassador role. the queen seen on sunday attending search on sunday with her husband and prince andrew, putting out an official statement saying she's pleased that together they have found a constructive way forward for her grandson and his family. saying she recognizes the

that he didn't get? >> reporter: well, i'm not subject to exactly what was laid before the royal household and the queen's representatives, but i know when he says he wanted to support the queen, and the commonwealth and carry on with his role in the armed forces, those are three areas he felt, and presumably meghan did too that they could run co-concomitant with everything else that he's got planned. but, you know, it's very difficult. this is a role that's rather like working in the civil service. if you are in the royal family, you can't be seen to be benefitting from private income and still be a beneficiary of the royal status. so that's been the difficulty and i'm afraid it was necessary for the queen and her advisers to draw the line at that. >> and alastair, he said a lot and he seemed to be pouring his heart out, and it seemed to be heartfelt. but how are his comments now being received there?

>> reporter: well, i think everyone has followed the life of prince harry and harry as we all call him in due course, all of his life, since he was born. i mean, i remember when he was born. i saw him going through the army and i think that when his mother died, i think there was a great sense of anguish for him. and i think that continues because people feel throughout the united kingdom a great warmth towards this young man, and his desire to get his marriage sorted out and to wish him well. but, you know, the monarchy is not something you can just dip into and dip out of. and i know it must have seemed possible to him that he could, but it's been pointed out that because the monarchy must be kept clear of the danger of being seen to benefit for any of its members from any financial advantage that they might get from being a royal, he's had to make these rather difficult decisions and he's gone. >> they've decided they're going

[ applause ] and now a new review finds that screen time may not be as harmful to mental health as previous studies suggested. dr. jen is back with the study. break this down. >> the banner headline on this is that association as we say all the time does not equal cause and effect, and over the last, you know, decade or more as we've seen the rise in digital technology use across a adolescents and amongst the rise of mental illness, a lot people where it boils down to

this equals this.th this study is a meta-analysis -- >> study a study. >> exactly. a compilation, and a deep dive into what we know, actually finds that a lot of them were done on methodology that you can't say that that technology is causing mental illness, particularly depression, and anxiety. a lot of the studies were done in adults and extrapolated to teenagers. a lot of the studies looked at the hours of screen time and didn't look at how that screen time was used, didn't look at othe. is a powerful reminder. the verdict is not in. we can't say that one equals the other. >> what are the upsides of the technology? >> the psychologist who did this study and others by the way are quick to point out we hear a lot about the negatives. there are a lot of potential positives, particularly in this age group. it can be important in fostering social connections amongst teens and others. it can engage them on a social and intellectual level. we can't forget you can actually learn things from social media and digital technology, and particularly in this age group, it can be a powerful means of support, and again, they're not all created equally. a teenager listening to a ted talk is not necessarily the same as a teenager flipping through social media likes or dislikes.

>> parents are still going to be concerned about screen title. what should they know? >> you and i are both parents. so it's on our radar. according to other experts, they're emphasizing the facts that behavior oftentimes mirrors what they're experiencing offline. connect the dots. you should know what your teenager is doing online, just like we want to know what our kids are doing off line. and if you have any concerns about this because this is an evolving field, you want to discuss this. not only with your teenager, but school guidance counsellors, their pediatrician, other people that are involved in your teenager's world because again, it's not as simple as all bad or all good. >> all about communication. okay, jen. thanks very much. hey, guyeorge. you said you always look forward to this. it's an inspiring celebration of dr. martin luther king jr. this year, fourth and fifth graders in houston, dallas and chicago, participated in the annual mlk jr. oratory competition giving speeches inspired by the words of dr. king. >> you'll see why george loves this.

we don't provide literacy much to boys. it's more fulfillment emotionally than financially. >> basically what happened in the book one, we were sbused to congressman lewis, and martin luther king began the peaceful protest because they sought justice in their community. >> i have so much respect to those boys who joined this club and they are being part of a revolution showing children of color that not only is it okay to read and it's necessary to read, it's fun to read. >> in late march, 1961 -- >> and for these young people to do this, it's beautiful. >> we all have a fun time, and we get to go in a whole different world of reading. >> there's a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into books n bros. books n bros is so crucial. it just benefits so many people that it keeps me going. >> and sidney and his mom winnie are here now joining us in

[ cheers and applause ] hey, sidney. wonderful. you know, in so many ways you emulate dr. king. he overcame so many struggles in hopes of helping others. you had a struggle with stuttering and you were bullied and you turned that around into a successful program. tell us how you went about doing that. >> i had a bad stutter in elementary school and i would get teased for it and i used to love to read, and that was my escape to my stutter because in my head i was able to visualize things without stuttering and being able to play out the events clearly and reading was kind of like an escape for me. so i wanted to start something like books n bros so that i could talk to other people and especially boys, like, about books that i love to read because that was, like, a brotherhood that i loved. >> it's spread all across your community. okay. how proud are you? >> i'm extremely proud. i am so proud of sidney. he's grown into such a leader over the last few years.

>> how have you seen him grow? >> definitely as a speaker, as a leader. i remember the first time we had a meetup of seven boys and we grew from seven boys to 30 boys and he was so scared to talk in front of 30 people, and since then he has spoke the a group of over 3,000 people. he continuously amazes me. >> i bet. marvel's hero project, it was just an disney plus which takes young men like this, young kids around the country and turns them into superheroes. they did that for you. they did that for him. you were super sidney, with a wonderful series. what was it like? what did your friends say? >> i guess it was like -- i always wanted to read books that had characters that look like me, but i never thought that i would see a comic book with me in it. so it's just something that, like, really awesome. especially because, like, it's the reaction of all my friends and teachers.
