a tragic end to a police chase in the east bay. a driver a person killed as a driver tried to evade officers. >> it happened on university avenue at sixth street, not far from 80. the woman was walking down the street when she was hit by the suspect's car. >> abc7 news reporter anser hassan joins us now from the scene with the very latest on this tragedy. >> good evening. police expanded the crime scene a short while ago and now goes from seventh down to the on-ramps. police say the suspect tried to turn left from sixth street on to university, lost control, and that's when he hit and killed the woman. police are searching for two suspects involved in a fatal hit-and-run that began as a chase by uc berkeley police through city streets. >> the suspect vehicle at some point ended up driving on to the sidewalk of university where it struck a person on the sidewalk.

>> officer byron white with the berkeley police department said uc berkeley police attempted a traffic stop near the cal campus, but the driver took off, chased by uc police. officer white says the driver turned on to university avenue, but went wide. the driver ended up on the sidewalk, hitting the woman, and then fled towards the freeway. >> at some point, the officer following from the university ended up following that way, saw that he got on to the freeway, and then returned to the scene here where they found the person. >> bettina drove here from oakland for a yoga class, only to find out the studio was closed due to the police investigation. >> it's pretty scary, and it's right outside the yoga studio. i'm concerned what if someone is trying go to yoga like me gets hit by a car. that's really scary. >> now at this time, we don't know why uc berkeley was trying to stop the driver. uc berkeley police did not

respond our request for comment. anyone with information are asked to contact berkeley police. anser hassan, abc7 news. >> thank you. moraga police say a double shooting at a shopping center last night was domestic violence. the suspect has been identified as 21-year-old isaiah glaze, a former st. mary's college student. police say he was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting two people at rheem shopping center around 7:30 last night. one of the people shot was his ex-girlfriend who is currently a st. mary's student. all three were taken to the hospital. police have not released their conditions. an agreement reached today will give a group of women a chance to move back into the house they illegally occupied for two months. wedgwood properties has agreed to negotiate i good faith to sell the magnolia street house it owns in oakland to a nonprofit that will in turn fix it up and allow the women to move back in. >> i hope that this is a clear signal that when you come

forward and try and work out a solution, that we are here to help community groups achieve tremendous successes like we are celebrating today. >> the women began squatting in the house in november and stayed there until last week until sheriff's deputies enforced a judge's order to evict them. a warning is now in effect along local beaches because of an increased chance of rip currents and sneaker waves. sky 7 captured video of strong waves at ocean beach earlier this afternoon. powerful surf can be dangerous to boater, swimmers, even for people walking along beachs. spencer christian joins us with a look at the forecast. >> we'll start with a look at lye doppler 7 showing the relatively calm weather conditions right now, although we do have rain coming our way. as alma mentioned, we have a beach hazard statement in effect until 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. wave heights are elevated. there is the possibility of dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves. and this statement extends from sonoma county to monterey county. meanwhile, there is an

south and southeast. generally the bay area is dry. the clouds are increasing. this is the view from sutro tower. looking at san francisco where it's currently 54 degrees. we also have mid-50s at oakland, redwood city, san jose, gilroy and half moon bay. here is another view of the advancing clouds, looking westward from emeryville. you can see a deep cloud bank. it's currently 54. mid-50s at petaluma and napa. 50 at fairfield. that's our cool spot right now. and we have low 50s in concord and livermore. looking northward from the golden gate, this is the direction from which our storm is coming. there will be lots of clouds there soon enough as the storm approaches. these are our forecast features. north bay sprinkles overnight and into the early morning hours. and then rain will get better organized and move southward and eastward during the afternoon and evening hours. and wednesday, we start a dry pattern that continues for the remainder of the week. bchazardt in effect until 3:00 tomorrow. we've got rough surf in all the bay area beaches.

wave heights are elevated. there is a possibility of dangerous sneaker waves and rip currents. bear in mind. this hazard statement from monterey to sonoma counties. only 1 on the impact, a light intensity. it will bring light rain and showers to most places tomorrow with rainfall totals under half an inch in most locations. be the coastal ranges and the north bay mountains may get a bit more. and it will be breezy at times. here is the forecast animation. starting at 11:00 tonight, notice in the wee hours of the morning, we will see rain developing up in the north bay, coming down from ukiah to cloverdale to santa rosa. by 9:00 a.m. or so, we'll see the front becoming more prominent. still mainly in the north bay. won't be until midday that we see the front reaching down into the central part of the bay area where it starts to fall apart into widely scattered showers, which will continue by the way into the late night hours tomorrow. overnight this night look for low temperatures mainly in the low to mid-40s, and tomorrow's highs generally in the mid-50s.

machine. kelly contacted lowe's and they said the generator is no longer under warranty, and it was not responsible for repairs. kelly emailed 7 on your side. we got in touch with lowe's, and it sent her a brand-new generator. we appreciate them doing that. now the second resolve comes from emily in san francisco who said her husband's debit card was stolen. now they filed a fraud claim with bank of america and the company gave temporary credit. but the claim was later denied with no explanation and the provisional credit, those were reversed too. the couple emailed 7 on your side. we contacted bank of america and kelly and her husband got back the credit worth $1,928. this final resolve comes from nicole in south san francisco. after staying at the quality inn & suites hotel for two days, she noticed an extra $50 charge on her credit card statement. so she called the hotel, said what's up? and she was told it was for

now news to build a better bay area, from abc7. >> it's a historic week with president trump's impeachment trial to begin tomorrow in the senate. >> this is only the third time a president has faced such a proceeding, and abc7 reporter serena marshall explains what to expect once it gets under way. >> on the eve of the president's impeachment trial, the house managers in charge of prosecuting the case crossing the capitol to check out the turf they'll be arguing their case on, tight-lipped as the legal back and forth already under way. the president's team of nine lawyers outlining the arguments they'll make at the trial in a 170-page legal brief saying the president did nothing wrong, did not commit a crime and even the democrats' argument of abuse of power does not rise to an impeachable offense. and therefore there is no valid reason for impeachment, something one of his lawyers argued over the weekend. >> your position that president trump should not be impeached

even if all the evidence and arguments laid out by the house are accepted as fact? >> that's right. >> democrats responding that a criminal offense is not required for impeaching, and calling the president's defense a chilling assertion and dead wrong. the framers deliberately drafted a resolution that allows the senate to remove a president who abuses their power to cheat in elections, betray our national security and ignore checks and balances. less than 24 hours to go, the format not quite clear. democrats expected to be given 24 hours over two days to present their arguments and are still demanding witnesses. >> we will force votes on witnesses and documents, and it will be up to four republicans to side with the constitution. >> senate republicans hope to postpone a decision about witnesses until after house managers present their case and the president responds. president trump won't even be stateside as the trial ramps up. he leaves tonight for davos,

switzerland, attending the world economic forum. serena marshall, abc news, washington. >> mark desaulnier is here now. impeachment, of course, is what everyone is talking about as this proceeding gets under way, mark. now it as it moves from your chamber in the house to the senate, they're still arguing over what the format is going to be. first of all, let's discuss the format. what do you think people should expect to happen in the senate? >> well, my hope is it will be as open and transparent as possible, that there will be witnesses called, and that will be in everybody's best interests in particular for the president if he's got nothing to hide. >> what do you make about the president says hey, i did nothing wrong. i did nothing criminal here. but that's not necessarily the standard for moving a president? >> actually, the general accounting office. that's the nonpartisan very well respected organization that gives congress opinions. they just came out last week and said he did violate the law in withholding the funds. in addition, it's clear to me that he violated federal campaign laws. >> okay.

what do you pate? you hope for a fair proceeding, of course, and we all do. what do you anticipate the outcome, everyone suspected that in your chamber of the house you would ratify the articles of impeachment, send them on to the senate. most people expect the senate not to vote to impeach because the republicans dominate that chamber. what do you think really is going to happen? >> i would say it's very high threshold to try to get enough votes to remove him from office, given the current makeup. it is somewhat a reflection of how polarize wed are and partisan we are as a country. one would hope, though, that our better angels would stick with the truth and have witnesses and have a really open, transparent hearing and do what's best for the country. >> and why tell people from your perspective, regardless of this outcome. assuming conventional wisdom he is not removed from office, why is this process still very important? >> well, you have got to do what's right. it's not a cliche from my

perspective that you follow your oath of office. the founders wanted to have a diffused government where as madison said, ambition matched ambition. these are supposed to be quo equal. some would argue this is the first article. so you have to have this tension. when one part of government, particularly the administrative goes beyond the rules, that's what the founders are worried about is checking that so that ultimately, the american voter is what's important within these institutions. >> let's shift focus for a moment and talk about something you're working on hard in the house. big weekend for football. the 49ers win. they're on the way to the super bowl against kansas city. you're introducing a bill to protect against head injuries. tell what you're doing and why. >> for high school athletes, we know how dangerous it for young people to get concussions. so our bill would have the national institutes for health to research best practices and

make sure that it gets to high school athletic departments, and that they would convene their coaches to make sure they're implementing base practices to make sure they have the right equipment, the right techniques and when there are concussions they know what to do to protect the student athlete. >> do you feel like at the high school college and pro football level that football has become a little bit safer the last few years because of more awareness, more effort to protect athletes? >> i think so. but i think we is still have a ways to go. we learned about this generationally, along with the exponential research on neuroscience. so those two things, we still don't know these things until we've actually seen a generation or so to see if we protected people. >> and i have heard some people who are concerned about the future of football. i've heard from a lot of parents who say hey, i don't want my kids to play football now. it's sort of the national obsession is football. do you worry about the future of the game? >> i do. but they have to protect the students. i played football in high school and college. >> that explains it!

we all like fame. we all strive for it. more time for weather. >> speaking of weather. >> members of the canadian military are still working to help residents of st. john's newfoundland left snow bound by a record-setting blizzard. this time lapse shows the so-called bomb cyclone which dumped more than 30 inches of snow starting on friday. the total broke the previous record of 4 inches and prompted the mayor to declare a state of emergency. 200 members of the canadian air force arrived yesterday to help residents dig out. st. john's resident lola parsons felt the brunt of the storm firsthand. she left her car window open, which allowed several inches of snow to accumulate inside her car. turn on the seat heater. >> just put it on. it will melt away. >> that will make it worse. >> that's true. >> can you imagine? >> bummer. >> but we have all these crazy

but i toil for you. so here we go. we've got calm weather conditions over the bay area right now. but a light storm is coming in during the wee hours of the morning. so tomorrow this level 1 storm, a storm of light intensity will bring light rain and showers to most of the bay area. it will start late tonight up in the north bay, producing light showers. most locations will receive less than half an inch of rain from this storm. it will be breezy at times. on we go to overnight conditions as the storm develops first in the north bay it will get a little rainy up there. overnight lows mainly in the mid-40s and tomorrow's highs generally in the mid-50s. not a wide range there. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. after tomorrow's level 1 storm, start to get at least partial clearing on wednesday. a dry pattern will then prevail through friday. notice how much milder it's going to get. temperatures in the mid-60s inland and around the bay shoreline on friday and saturday. uhowever, saturday will also bring us the beginning of our next round of rain which will continue into sunday.
