one of their officers heard a woman screaming as she was being punched in the head by a man in a car here on 6th street. when officers pulled up, the man made a u-turn but turned wide hitting and killing a woman on a sidewalk. police are searching for a hit-and-run that left one woman dead and another trapped in his car. >> the suspect vehicle at some point ended up driving onto the sidewalk of university where it struck a person on the sidewalk. >> reporter: officer byron white with the berkeley police department says the driver tried to turn left onto university avenue, but went wide. he ended up on the sidewalk, hitting a woman and then fled towards the freeway as he was chased by police. >> at some point the officer following from university ended up following that way, saw that he got onto the freeway and then returned to the scene here where they found a person. >> reporter: uc berkeley police

sergeant jacob wesley says it all started when his officer saw the driver punching a woman in the parked car. when the officer pulled up behind him, the driver took off with the woman in the car. >> i mean devastating, absolutely. >> reporter: like many walking through the area, diana says she was alarmed to learn of an innocent woman losing her life. she admits this is a busy part of town but says the streets are usually safe. but tina drove here from oakland for yoga class only to find out that the studio was closed due to the police investigation. >> it's pretty scary and it's right outside the yoga studio, so i'm concerned what if someone just trying to go to yoga like me gets hit by a car. that's really scary. >> reporter: police say they're looking for a man driving a gray four-door nissan sedan. anyone with any information is asked to contact berkeley police. reporting live, unser hassan, abc news.

a man who worked for heavenly mountain resort died there over the weekend. it happened on saturday on an expert trail. the employee, a 36-year-old man, was taken to the hospital but sadly later died. the company calls it a, quote, ski incident. also new at 6:00, take a look at a car that crashed into a mall. this is at the park & shop mall in concord. the ford explorer ended up inside the furniture today store. one person was taken to the hospital. it's not clear if that was the driver or maybe someone inside the store. firefighters helped clean up the damage left behind. someone was able to drive that car out of the store, as you see. also tonight, police are calling last night's shooting at a shopping center a case of domestic violence. the suspect, 21-year-old isaiah glaze, shot a man and a woman who was his ex-girlfriend and a student at st. mary's college. >> the victims were getting into their vehicle. the suspect drove his vehicle in

behind the victims' vehicle, got out and then approached the driver's side and that's when he shot into the car. >> police say he ran off. officers found him a short time later suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. all three were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. after weeks of acrimony, a deal has been struck between the oakland mom who say illegally occupied a home and the owner of that house for the sale of the property. it comes with an assist from community groups and the city of oakland. laura anthony explains how it works. >> we're just happy. we're ready to buy mom's house and we're ready to continue this movement. >> reporter: six days after alameda county sheriffs crashed through the door of a modest house on magnolia street and arrested those who were living in illegally, the same moms for housing are now in negotiations to buy the house from which they were evicted. >> this movement does not end today with us, with that house on magnolia street. we will not stop organizing and

fighting until all unhoused folks who want shelter have shelter. >> what this provides is the opportunity for the city of oakland, for the land trust to be able to get their hands on these homes in a way that they haven't been able to in the past. >> reporter: the agreement does not stop with the one house on magnolia. wedgwood has agreed to give the city the land trust and other groups first right of refusal on all its oakland properties, which currently total about 50. >> wedgwood has made a historic agreement to change the way they do business in oakland. and to offer community land trusts or other affordable housing organizations or the city the right of first refusal on all of their properties. >> reporter: the moms say once the sale for magnolia is complete and upgrades are finished, they and their kids will move back in. >> the plan is to make that the foundation of moms for housing. that is where this all started and that's where we all plan to keep it moving.

>> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's department has taken tremendous flak for the way they executed the eviction order last week. in a statement a spokesman told abc 7 news, it's unfortunate the deal announced today wasn't made sooner. the sheriff's department plans to ask wedgwood to reimburse them for the cost of the action, about $50,000. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. homes are going up right now in an emergency housing project in oakland. volunteers with the village in oakland are building emergency shelters at vintage point park where people have been living in tents for at least ten years. the group's founder says the project is the perfect way to mark the martin luther king jr. holiday. >> one of his main pushes was the need of adequate housing, so it's really appropriate that we're doing this on his birthday to remember him as part of his, you know, legacy he left us. so we're picking up the torch. >> the project will continue through the week. the goal is to build five tiny

homes. the group says its goal is to get people into safe shelter until permanent, affordable housing is available. on to the weather, rain will returning tomorrow but it's not a washout. the storm only ranks 1 on the exclusive abc 7 news storm impact scale. spencer christian explains what we can expect, spencer. >> all right, dan, we'll start with live doppler 7 because at the moment conditions are dry and calm but rain is on the way. before i get to that, let me just show you we have a beach hazard statement in effect. there's rough surf along the bay area beaches, a risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. overnight in the wee hours of the morning we'll see the rain beginning up in the north bay first. during the day and into the evening hours we'll see light rain and showers moving into other parts of the bay area. less than half an inch in most locations and breezy at times. here's our forecast animation showing the arrival of light showers in parts of the north bay. then that cold front sweeps

through bringing organized, steadier, heavier rain. that's also in the morning hours until early afternoon. finally the front will work its way into the golden gate, parts of the east bay and san francisco, and after that it will break up and weaken. there will be showers going into the evening hours so it will probably be a wet afternoon and evening commute for many commuters. more on the weather in a few minutes. right now a warning is in effect for dangerous surf along our coast from sonoma county south to monterey. sky 7 flew above san francisco when powerful waves pounded the beach at ocean beach this afternoon. the national weather service is urging people to be careful because there's an increased chance for sneaker waves and rip currents. those conditions can be very dangerous, sometimes deadly for boaters, swimmers and even people walking near the water. setting fires deliberately may save lives by clearing brush in california and elsewhere. that's the opinion of stanford researchers. those fires arepribed burns.

tonight tesla is responding to allegations that its cars can accelerate unintentionally. days ago we told you that the national highway transportation safety administration was reviewing a petition that demands an investigation claiming the car's electronics can malfunction causing unintended acceleration. the document cites 127 consumer complaints from owners and claims of 110 crashes and 52 injuries. now, the tesla team statement reads in part, quote, this petition is completely false. we investigate every single incident where the driver alleges to us that their vehicle accelerated contrary to their

>> now, we dug deep into the abc 7 news archives today and found this really incredible gem. it's martin luther king jr.'s last visit to the bay area. we've been told this may be the only film that still exists of dr. king's trip that day. the civil rights leader came in january, 1968, to see singer and activist joan baez. baez and her mother were in the alameda county jail after being arrested during a war protest in oakland. dr. king was asked about the vietnam war impacting the civil rights movement. >> we feel that this war is wrong. now suddenly it's damaging civil rights and i think the war needs to end if for no other reason that we aren't going to make the progress that we could make in civil rights if this war didn't exist. >> baez and her mother were released from jail four days after dr. king's visit. in hayward local activists honored dr. king's legacy with a rally outside city hall. speakers compared the civil

jr. ceremony. in washington, d.c., the mlk foundation held its annual wreath laying, day of reflection and reconciliation honoring dr. martin luther king jr. both president trump and vice president pence visited the memorial this afternoon, standing side by side as they paid their respects. staying in washington now, it is an historic week in the impeachment of president trump, the trial set to begin tomorrow. serena marshall has a look ahead from washington. >> reporter: on the eve of the president's impeachment trial, the house managers in charge of prosecuting the case crossing the capitol to check out the turf they're arguing the case on. tight-lipped as the legal back and forth already under way. the president's team of nine lawyers outlining the arguments they'll make stating that the president did nothing wrong, did not commit a crime and even the democrats' argument of abuse of power does not rise to an impeachable offense. and, therefore, there's no valid reason for impeachment. something one of his lawyers argued over the weekend.
