down because of a crash involving one car. emergency crews are on the scene nearby. you see the slowdown starting. we have a stall on westbound 80 at 9th street. breaking news, police are investigating a shooting in palo alto. it happened just after 3:00. no details have been released about what happens and it's unclear if anyone was hurt. we do have calls in to police for more information. building a better bay area on b.a.r.t. means getting broken he escalators running consistently. >> b.a.r.t. will see if it's worth the many millions of dollars. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. b.a.r.t. says covering up its escalators with canopies would solve all kinds of issues. let me show you a picture of what it would look like. they're talking about adding canopies to cover up their

escalators, 22 of them on market street in san francisco. they're already planning to replace 41. 22 are outside and carry people up to the street level. those canopies would protect the escalators from weather. that's a big one. officials say they would also help with security, be able to close and lock the station at street level if they had these canopies and point out that would protect the station and would make employees who opened up the stations feel safer. b.a.r.t. officials say the canopy covering an escalator in oakland reduced escalator down time by about 30%. they will hold a press conference later today. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. police are investigating the deaths of three children who were found inside a home in phoenix, arizona. following this awful story at

the live desk. officers were called to the house last night by a relative of the children. police say they found a 7-month-old girl, 2-year-old girl, and 3-year-old boy unresponsive. they performed cpr on the kids, but they all died at the scene. police say it's too early to tell the cause of death but also said the children were ill earlier in the day. >> this is probably one of the most difficult calls our officers and fire personnel respond to. the most difficult part to see children who are the most innocent that have obviously lost their lives. >> police say there's no obvious signs of trauma, but the fact all three were found dead is suspicious. investigators are interviewing the victims' parents and another relative. >> it's terrible. jobina, thank you for the update. we have major new developments in the deadly hit-and-run of an observing mother this happened on friday. >> police say they found the vehicle involved but haven't caught the driver. reporter lauren martinez attended a candlelight vigil

outside the school where the woman was hit and killed. >> we need justice. we need it. we need it. we dit we nd >> reporter: family and friends are grieving the death of miesha singleton, a mother killed by a hit-and-run driver on 98th avenue last friday afternoon. >> she's a wonderful mother of seven. an active leader in our community who had been standing with us against violence. >> reporter: on monday night miesha's family held a candlelight vigil at the spot where she was hit by a car that killed her in front of elmhurst middle school. at times her husband yelled at cars he felt were going too fast on the busy corridor. through community tips, police recovered the vehicle involved in oakland. >> we're going to ask the driver to do the right thing and to turn yourself in. >> reporter: police say they have strong leads and are processing evidence. >> we have a lot of video surveillance investigators are going through.

time is 5:13. a person has died after a fire broke out inside a mobile home in sunnyvale. it happened just before 10:00 last night at the el dorado mobile home park. paramedics rushed another person to the hospital. number two, in just a few hours the historic impeachment trial of president trump in the senate is set to get under way. abc news will have live coverage when this trial gets under way around 9:30 this morning. number three, a level one system moving into the bay area this morning. showers confined to the north bay through the morning hours but will sink south and east a

quarter to a half inch of rain with breezy winds expected. and, number we are following right now a situation in san francisco, the southbound 101 connector to eastbound 80 is completely shut down because of a single car crash. number five, b.a.r.t. will vote on buying canopies for the market street station in san francisco. they've purchased 22 of them to cover and protect the escalators from elements. number six, some drugstores are running out of excedrin after a sudden stop in production. they say they have stopped production on the medication because of inconsistencies with ingredients. number seven, miami getting ready for super bowl liv. this is new video of the preparations in the city ahead of the big game between the niners and the chiefs. the countdown just 12 days away. officials in puerto rico are now passing out supplies that sat in warehouses since hurricane maria which was in 2017. >> they're being distributed to

those affected by recent earthquakes. residents gathered outside the governor's mansion in san juan to call for her resignation. the supplies were discovered in an abandoned government operated warehouse over the weekend. governor wanda vasquez fired the chief of emergency management and temporarily called for the national guard to oversee the agency. a north bay elementary school is holding an open house this weekend after a sign with racist undertones was discovered. it was found last month over the marquee in san rafael. this foe toll from san rafael city schools shows the sign. it reads, got english? a majority of students are hispanic. the superintendent says the message is an expression of ignorance, hate and racism. school officials will be at the open house on saturday. a mountain lion has been euthanized after officials say it attacked a 3-year-old boy in an orange county park. >> so the boy was hiking with his family yesterday afternoon

when the big cat just pounced. officials say the mountain lion grabbed the boy by the neck. oh, my gosh. so his dad threw ackpa the animal. it let the boy go. it grabbed the bag and jumped into a tree. fellow hikers were just stunned. >> it was a little unnefk but it had a backpac in its mouth and caught us off guard. we didn't know why it had a backpack. >> the 3-year-old is recovering in the hospital from the bite, some scrapes, too. he is expected to be okay. people who live in the area say there have been at least five mountain lion sightings in just the last four days. it's unclear if that cat euthanized was the same one they had seen. >> a real close call. we're going to check out what's happening in weather and it's rain. it is raining in the north bay, reggie, kumasi. check it out. you can see this is what is ahead of the system. in napa, some pretty good returns up to guerneville, healdsburg, our sweet on mt. st.

helena and into san rafael. closer here to where we have some rain from highway highway and as we go in closer to yountville, some pretty good showers back to geyserville, guerneville and the coast, highway 1, and these are just some very light returns, west marin. as we go further into the peninsula and san francisco just some sprinkles, overrunning light rain before the system will move in which is still off shore. we're still looking at this system here. it has to push on through the north bay in the morning hours. and then bring some breezy winds. it's going to be the afternoon for the peninsula and the south bay. it is 51 downtown and in free month. the southerly winds ahead it have mild, gusting up to 30 miles an hour in the upper elevations. you can see the camera shaking and the commute will be impacted from the peninsula to the east bay.

investigating a mobile home fire that left a person dead. >> it happened where julian glover is joining us live with details. good morning, julian. >> good morning to you, kumasi and reggie. we're working to learn more about the victim who died when the fire gutted the entire mobile home. we know the flames and the fire started around 10:00 last night and that is when the firefighters quickly responded. you'll see the mobile home here with that collapsed awning, the unit destroyed, gutted by flames. the sunnyvale department of public safety said while attacking the fire they found two victims in the home, one transported to the hospital. the other pronounced dead there at that mobile home. here is what neighbors saw. >> it shook me. it shook me because it gutted the place. i was only outside for maybe half an hour and the entire place was gone on the inside.

their way this could be over next week. democrats blasting republicans. >> senator mcconnell's resolution is a national disgrace. >> reporter: chuck schumer slamming mitch mcconnell's proposed resolution which gives the two sides two days each to make their openingen 16 hours o senators. after that the debate over the issue of witnesses. >> it's clear mcconnell is hellbent on making it much more difficult to get witnesses and documents and intent on rushing the trial through. >> reporter: this as president trump's lawyers argue in their brief the process violated every precedent and principle of fairness with one of the president's lawyers, alan dershowitz, claiming the articles of impeachment do not rise to the levels of high

welcome back, everyone. it's 5:43 and happening now a state of emergency is still in effect in parts of canada after what many are calling snowmaggedon. a woman in newfoundland went out to her car to find the inside was filled with snow and she said she had accidentally left the window down when she parked it. relief teams are helping dig out homes and clear driveway this is week. in san francisco city leaders are alerting drivers to a huge change coming to market street. cars will basically be banned on a large stretch of this road. so going eastbound toward the ferry building you cannot drive on market street 10th street to main. the opposite direction from stewart to van ness. they apply to your private cars

and this is bringing the most rain to the north bay. we have drizzle, we have mist throughout the rest of the bay. a quarter of an inch to three-quarters of an inch. you can see the shower activity even into the east bay highway 4 around napa. american canyon and yountville, back westward from santa rosa to penn grove and petaluma. it is showery as well as bodega bay, west marin. and over into the east bay, i should say martinez through concord and walnut creek, 680, give yourself extra time, back to school, back to work. rain showers through palo alto and sunnyvale and this is the precursor to a front that will push on through the bay area this morning in the north bay. 50 in hayward. the winds are breezy in the upper elevations. with the front we will get the breezy winds. you can see the camera shaking. scattered showers, rain moving southward throughout the afternoon and evening and then a dry pattern sets up after that.
