sometimes it's a bit of a challenge. >> i live in vallejo so i take ferry. >> it's too unpredictable. >> commuters share their public transport frustrations and that's causing a problem. declining ridership in the bay area. good afternoon. >> a new study set to be released tomorrow show fewer people are taking public transit these days. >> live with more on the reason for the change and some of the solutions that could help build a better bay area. >> reporter: good afternoon. as you mentioned, the full presentation is expected tomorrow. this is a preview. what we do know is out of the three categoies of transit users they identified, two out of three saw a ridership decline before 10%.

to get some insight on why that's happening, we went right into embarcadero station and straight to the riders. she has the daily commute that is becoming all too common in the bay area. >> it's like an hour and a half in total and it is a little bit, it is a little bit tiring. >> she's a big supporter of public transit but if cost wasn't an issue, this is what she would do. >> probably a lyft or an uber. >> how much would it cost you? >> about $25 each way. >> greg has a pretty easy commute from oakland. when he's in the city, he's made a switch. >> for a lot of short trims that i used to take the bus for, i'll take lyft or uber instead. >> a new study by the metropolitan transit commission shows especially if off peak hours, transit in the bay area is losing to ride sharing services like lyft and uber. the study points to the high cost of living. when more people leave the city

or have longer commutes, the less competitive transit becomes. almost every rider we met lived outside of san francisco. >> i actually live in vallejo. i take the ferry often. the experience on b.a.r.t. is a little bit jarring, given the amount of people and the inconvenience, navigating it of the. >> that's one of the city's proposed solutions. address crowding issues with fleet improvements. improve service and better fares and routes. he always struggles to explain to it visitors. >> especially people from europe can't understand it. it is disjointed. why are there so many methods? muni? b.a.r.t. >> we did reach out to muni and b.a.r.t. they did not get back to me today but it is likely they will talk about this tomorrow when artyukhin makes a presentation to the transit commission.

>> this study doesn't just look at possible causes of ridership decline. it also determined what isn't causing the problem which is interesting. can you talk about that? >> yeah. that's right. >> they ruled out a few causes that i know get blamed. they don't believe that transit fares and fuel prices have anything to do with the decrease in ridership and as well, the transit buses that companies use, that shuttle employees to and from their work, they say that has not made a difference in the decline of ridership. back to you. >> all right. thank you. >> we do want to hear your ideas of building a better bay area. >> b.a.r.t. officials are hoping a new addition will make the system cleaner and safer for workers and riders alike. they were showing off a perot time escalator canopy with a metal dropdown curtain. the board of directors is expected to vote this week onnd aing canopies to nearly two

violent crime, the statistics don't matter when it happened to you. that's why building relationships is so important. that's why our strategies focus prevention rather than reaction. >> this month, sfpd will open a new office near seventh street to strategically put officers throughout the corridor. oakland statistics show an overall increase of 15%. there were 78 homicides up from 75 in 2018. the bay area's largest city saw a slight increase in crime. there were 34 homicides in san jose, up from 28 the year before. there was a drop in robbery, burglary and vehicle theft. are at san pedro elementary school, a sign that says, got

investigators to study it closely. in a conference call disclosing this first u.s. case, an ominous warning was made. >> we do expect additional cases in the united states and globally. >> reporter: dr. maldonado says a containment strategy is no doubt underway. >> they're probably already contacting the people who flew on that plane and had any quakt that person. >> reporter: the specific virus from china is so new, it is not known how soon symptoms develop after the initial exposure. the killer virus has symptoms similar to the flu so doctors and nurses will need to ask about travel to china. >> i think there should be a healthy degree of concern but i wouldn't panic. i think we have contained these epidemics in the past. there will be a meeting wednesday to learn how this exists. abc7 news was in hong kong in

>> they've screened 1,200 passengers. they have set up screening at three airports. no patients have been identified with that new virus. in washington state, the patient did seek professional help and he is being praised for having stepped forward quickly so hopefully they can contain this. live in san jose. dade louie. >> what can people do to protect themselves and others from getting this virus? >> well, the symptoms are very similar to the flu. people are suggesting, cover your coughs. make sure that you stay home if you're really feeling ill. be sure to check with a doctor and even mention the possibility of having corona virus in case you've traveled to china or have been around someone who has returned from that area. so those are all common sense things to protect all of us. >> that's good information.

corona viruss are a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses from a common cold to something much more severe, that can even kill a person as you've heard. the world health organization says there are four common symptoms. fever, a cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. most severe cases can result in pneumonia, kidney failure and severe respiratory syndrome. what is commonly referred to as sars. southern california considering whether to label acetaminophen a carcinogen. it is found in well known brands like tinl, excedrin, sudafed among others. the effort falls under prom significance 65, a law that requires the state to warn people of any chemical known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. there have been 135 studies on it. some have recorded an increased risk of some times of cancers while others did not. some drug stores across the

country aren't able to stock up on excedrin. the company that makes it has stopped production because of inconsistencies in how it transfers and weighs ingredients. excedrin extra strength and migraine are being discontinued for now. >> it hasn't been very wet or heavy but there will be wet spots on the roadways. we will start to get rain in most places south of the golden gate until afternoon. there are little patches of light but the focus is on the peninsula down into the santa cruz mountains and a little on the east bay. let's take some outside views. this is a view from our roof top. it is wet. 55 degrees right now in san francisco and oakland. 56, redwood city. san jose, 58.

gilroy, 55 and half moon bay, 54. we have current temperature readings in the mid 50s. and at the golden gate bridge, it is wet as well. and we'll see periods of light rain and showers overnight. sunnier and milder days will come our way and rain returns over the weekend. this current storm ranks a 1. expect to it produce light rain and showers into the late night and a little overnight hours. more may fall into the mountains down to the monterey bay area. the highest rainfall totals will be in the south bay. we'll see trickles of rain near

oakland and berkeley but most of activity will be down on the peninsula south bay and the santa cruz mountains. it will start to weaken. we'll have partly to mostly cloudy skies but almost nothing left in the way of precipitation. then it will get brighter and brighter. additional rainfall totals between now and midnight will be under .2 of an inch but perhaps up to a quarter of an inch at ben loaman. and low temperature will be in the mid to upper 40s. highs tomorrow, mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s. it will be a little milder. 61 at santa rosa. most others will see highs in the upper 60s. here's the forecast. three dry days, yay! wednesday, thursday and friday.

we are less than two weeks away from super bowl liv. and there's already debate about where a potential bay area parade might be held. >> 49ers fans are still riding the wave of sunday's win. the victory sending them to the super bowl. in this quest for a sixth title, a debate is brewing. we know the san francisco 49ers play their home games in santa clara. so now fans are asking, where will the possible super bowl

today's announcement come a month after boeing ordered a temporary halt in production for an undetermined period. the 737 max has been grounded since march of last year following two fatal crashes that killed 346 people. boeing had hoped the jets would be cleared to fly again before the end of 2019. the faa says the approval won't come until sometime next year. boeing said it won't if you are low or lay off worker but the move is certain to ripple through supply chain and potentially hurt the economy. a lawsuit is accusing mum agencies including the u.s. navy of ignoring on treasure island. lawyers say the radiation has caused people the get sick and even die and they are seeking class action status. >> we feel that certain entities engaged in ultra hazardous activities regarding leaving radiation on the island, that

ready for super bowl liv ready is underway. crews have already laid down new turf and soon they'll paint all the logos for both teams and of course the nfl shield on the field. according to the nfl, some 6,000 people will be working behind the scenes to get everything set at the stadium and in nearby miami for the onslaught of fans. >> so if you're not going to miami, where can you watch with other fans? here's a look at some of the watch parties. >> fans continue to flood team store. with the super bowl only 12 days away, the celebrating quickly turns to planning as the faithful start to figure out where they'll watch the big game. >> the way the plans are, we'll be home. >> we'll be across the street at my neighbor's house. he has a man cave set up in his
