>> abc news will provide live coverage throughout the trial. you can get updates on-air, online and through the abc 7 app, as well. we're looking at a deadly shooting in vallejo, involving an off-duty police officer. the shooting was leading up to the death of aaron reason. virgil thomas shot him after an argument over a parking space. reason pulled a gun as thomas drew his weapon and fired. while reason was running, at some point, he raised the gun and he believed he still posed a threat. abc 7 news is working to build a better bay area, trying to find solutions to homelessness is a part of that mission. >> berkeley is discussing a plan to build a tent-based homeless shelter just off 80 at university avenue.

>> cornell barnard has details on this. >> reporter: the city council meeting going late tonight. they're discussing an emergency p proposal to built a tent shelter. four people have died on berkeley streets so far this year. >> this is a humanitarian and moral crisis. >> reporter: finding solutions to the homeless crisis, not easy. there's an estimated 1,000 people living on berkeley city streets. homeless advocates for practically begging the city council to take action. >> people have moved out of their tents because the rats have eaten holes in the tents. >> reporter: the city is considering a tent-base shelter. a possible location would be this storage yard at the university overpass. >> we want to get people into permanent housing. but within the next month, we want to prevent people of dying of exposure.

download the free news app. new developments, with a potentially deadly corona virus. the first human case has been reported in the united states at washington state. officials are ramping up checks at airports. the cdc confirmed the first case of corona virus in the u.s. a 30-year-old man, five days after returnig home from china. health officials say the patient did not visit the wuhan meat market. there were checkpoints at kennedy airport, los angeles international and san francisco international. chicago's o'hare and atlanta will check the tempertures of passengers arriving from wuhan, looking for symptoms that mimic the common cold, flu or pneumonia. the washington patient started feeling sick a few days later and reached out tohealth officials. >> the risk to american citizens is low. part of the reason this patient was so rapidly identified and

new accusations from the family of a young man from san francisco, who is being held in the death of an italian police officer. they say police roughed up the suspect in the hours after his arrest. it's been months since the killing and two bay area suspects have been in jail since. >> dan noyes has more. >> reporter: just hours after being arrested for the death, he was photographed in a police station, handcuffed and blindfolded. now, the father of the second suspect writes that his son received rougher treatment from. he admits stabbing him to death but said it was in self-defense and didn't know he was a police
