this evening. beijing has gathered large gatherings on the eve of the new year. the most important holiday on the chinese calendar. >> 830 people are infected and 25 have died. five people are being test in the europe. roughly 25 million people are quarantined. that's about two-thirds of the population of california. the economic impact of the outbreak is starting to be felt in the bay area. >> especially people with travel plans that would take them from sfo to asia. one says people with paid trims will be losing thousands of dollars. the david? >> reporter: you know, no doubt that researchers are intending to scramble as fast as they can to learn whatever they can about the transmission of the new

coronavirus. that means those traveling to china or have plans to do so in a quaunldory. they don't want to be the next to get the virus. some have pre paid as much as $10,000, even more. china has extended it. the uncertainty of the how far it will spread and how long it will last creates anxiety for anyone planning a trip to china. she has been dealing with a deluge of cause from travelers. >> it has been a catastrophe. i won't sugar coat it. the fact that we are not going to china is real. >> reporter: with cases confirmed, people are worried about other asian nations. >> every single person wants to cancel and there's no recourse. there is no travel insurance for fear of epidemic. cancel for any reason doesn't work either. it still has to be an

unforeseen. this is not unforeseen. >> reporter: the economic impact could be stwangs the at of tourism at stake. 3 million chinese visited the u.s. last year spending about $6,700 per person. a similar number of tourists visit china annually spending from 2,200 to 4,500 per person. china has been moving quickly to keep the coronavirus within one province. the speed it has moved to close airports and stop ground travel has been so fast, the situation puts many on edge whether china is a viable place to visit. others think the world health organization should declare it an emergency. >> i don't know how many people have to die before they decide it's a crisis. so i think it is a worldwide crisis. >> reporter: airline flight attendants are getting very concerned as they fly in and out of china. cabin crew say they'll be wearing face mask when's they

travel in and out of china. and the union that represents american airlines flight attendants says they're asking all u.s. airlines to step up and try to give as much information as they can on airline passengers and u.s. airline employees so they can be safe as they travel around. >> thank you. we have news out of the north bay. several agencies are investigating after thousands of gallons of red wine spilled from a winery tank and some of it went into the russian river. rodney strong vineyards are reported it yesterday. they said they noticed the blend was probably the result of mechanical failure. state that's the say more than 97,000 gallons of wine spilled. the winery believes it was less than half that. >> the first thing to do was to stop the leak. saving as much of it as possible.

>> we evaluated the creek. it doesn't appear there is a lot of product remaining, which is good news. >> rodney strong vineyards and a third party contractor started pumping wine and water out from the creek and river. it is located on old redwood highway near east side road between the russian river and highway 101. it is now confirmed that three people were killed fighting the bush fires in australia were based here in california. the plane crashed in new south wales. they were part of the california crew that recently traveled to australia. their names have not been released. the c-130 hercules that crashed was the same one seen at mcclellan air force base during an event governor newsom hosted with former governor schwarzenegger last year.

the former ceo of wells fargo has been banned from the banking industry to pay $17.5 million fine. john stump. now this is the first public step the office of the controller of the currency has taken against these former executives. five other executives have refused to settle and will face a public hearing before an administrative law judge. one of those facing charges is the former head of the wells fargo community banking system. she could end up paying a $25 million fine. candidate tom steyer's status has changed a lot since he was last here in december. tom steyer is back in the bay area, meeting face to face to talk criminal justice reform in richmond. >> that's why i'm running for

wave heights will be elevated and there is risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. a lot of fog developing into the central valley and spilling into the bay area. overnight, had mid to upper 40s. a bit cloudier in the north bay. that will be the first area to receive rainfall. low to mid 60s everywhere else. let's talk about the approaching storm. it ranks a one. a storm of light intensity. it will move into the north bay late saturday. it will expansion to parts of bay area into sunday. three quarters of an inch or more in some north bay locations and here's the forecast animation, taking us into saturday morning. about 6:30 or so. we will see rain developing.
