right now at live desk i'm staying on top of breaking news in houston. a gas explosion at an industrial business has rocked several homes. this is a live picture now coming in from our sister station there. you can see the aftermath, leveled properties there. smoke coming from the area. i want to swipe to this video. this is video from someone's porch. you can see that explosion out in the distance. our sister station there is staying on top of this story. i want to go to courtney fisher's tweets. this video, she's inside someone's home. you can see this camera move around. look at this. this is one of the people living in the home. all of the items on the floor. things coming down from the ceiling. looks like everything has just been leveled from the top there. that's unfortunate to see this morning. we do know there have been some injuries reported. moving down to some other tweets. she had pictures from inside a home. this one here, you can see the dishes are broken.

very good sign. >> reporter: and overnight word that a student at tennessee tech university has reported mild symptoms and is being tested for the virus. the first confirmed case in the u.s., a man in his 30s, is being treated near seattle in isolation in a biocontainment room. >> the immediate risk to the american public is low, however, this situation is evolving quickly, and i do expect more cases in the united states. >> reporter: in just the last week the virus, which triggers cold-like symptoms, has spread to 10 countries sickening at least 830 people leaving at least 25 dead, mostly in wuhan, one of the largest transportation hubs in central china. clinics in the city are now overwhelmed as patients are screened, and supermarket shelves are bare. a 24-hour live stream shows workers in wuhan frantically building a brand-new hospital with 1,000 new beds just for coronavirus patients. a travel ban remains in place in wuhan along with two other nearby cities to try to contain the virus' spread putting more than 33 million people under quarantine. >> that's never been done

before. >> reporter: and now china is taking a new step closing one of its most revered cultural sites in one of the busiest tourist attractions in the world. beijing's forbidden city will close saturday until further notice. in the north bay dozens of volunteers are keeping a close eye on the russian river after a massive wine spill. a 97,000 gallon tank of cabernet sprang a leak at rodney strong vineyards. the vineyard is located in healdsburg. spilled wine poured into the drains and ponds and that made it into a creek that flows into the russian river >> we have not had reports of fish kills. certainly the biochemical and the acidity of the wine will call some smaller insect things that are fish food. you know, this could have been a lot worse. >> some of the wine was pumped out of the creek. the loss cab sells for $27 a bottle. it's likely millions of dollars

of inventory lost. people in south san jose say thieves are targeting parked cars. neighbors believe the suspects are using bb guns to break windows. police confirm at least three cases of vehicle vandalism in the area since the weekend along vista park drive. there were at least seven reports of damage posted on nextdoor. oftentimes the vandals don't even take anything and it's this senseless vandalism that has residents frustrated. >> it's too much. just stealing packages, things like that. leave us alone. >> neighbors are now parking inside their garages and then also considering adding more surveillance cameras to catch the crooks. the latest in presuident trump's preechimpeachment trial. >> the president's lawyers say abuse of power is not a crime

and not an impeachable offense. the white house counsel will begin giving their arguments tomorrow. in the east bay two congressmen hosted a town hall about the impeachment proceedings. representatives mark desongne and mark thompson were joined by constitutional scholars in martinez. they say the town halls have been wildly popular right now because people have a lot of questions about the proceedings. >> it can be dry. it can be tradition. tradition-bound and it can be confusing to people. these town halls on this subject are very helpful is the feedback i get so people better understand the process. >> he has posted the complete video of the town hall on his facebook account. abc7 will bring you live coverage throughout the trial. you can get all of the updates on air, online and on our abc7 news app. san francisco police expect rowdy crowds on super bowl sunday and they've been taking

extra precautions that are getting some backlash. the examiner reports after the 49ers won the nfc championship police showed up in riot gear and blocked off streets near 24th and mission. the people who live in the mission say this is racial profiling. they say they were unfairly targeted for living in a predominantly latino neighborhood. police say they sent extra officers to areas that have had problems during previous championship games. he 49ers are back on the practice field today. this weekend they're headed off to miami. super bowl excitement is building. julian glover is going to the game, but in the meantime he's at live vevi stadium. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> yes, i will be at the big game and of course the 49ers will be, too. this is the stuff you dream of, one day playing in the super bowl. that's what the 49ers will be doing when they get one more practice in today before boarding a plane and heading

the hospital. sn neighbors say the explosion shook homes. here's what was seen on the ground a short time ago. >> homes with ceilings caved in, blinds and shattered glass on the floor. we were inside some of these houses. firefighters came by with axes telling us to get out, it's not safe to be here. we'll bring you around so you can see, inside these houses, some of this damage. look at that. boards everywhere. and then over here, those firefighters are there, this car just drove out of the garage. but inside that garage, you can see there is just sheetrock down. pieces of insulation everywhere. right now no reports of any injuries, but we have seen ambulances and firefighters, vehicles kind of streaming out of this neighborhood. we're still trying to figure out how that plant exploded. still a chaotic scene out here.

>> one more look at that damage. despite the severity from the explosion, schools in the area are open today. i'll bring you updates on the story as it develops. >> incredible how much was affected. even show there are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the bay area, officials are not letting down their guard. >> alameda county is doing what it calls of aggressive testing of anyone with symptoms who may have traveled to wuhan, china. amy hollyfield is live at sfo where officials are also testing people. >> yes,irports are on high alert and now so is alameda county with health officials there putting out an abetter will the virus. county officials were reminding residents to practice good hygiene and call ahead to a doctor's office if they are not feeling well and recently traveled to wu,han, china. there were conflicting reports

on how many people were sick and being tested in alameda county so we went for clarification. >> when we say we're investigating less than ten people, that's moving all the time. sometimes we get a report, we investigate and decide that's not even somebody we're concerned that might have been exposed to the virus. >> preliminary results show some are suffering from the flu, others need more testing. there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in alameda county but health officials are preparing incase the virus arrives there. travelers from wuhan china are being screened including at l.a.x. and sfo. amy hollyfield, abc7 >> at the live desk i'm also tracking the coronavirus outbreak in china.

26 people there have died. more than 800 are stick right now. china expanded lockdowns to two more cities in an effort to contain the disease. the city of wuhan is trying to build a 1,000 bed hospital in six days. that hospital will be dedicated to treating coronavirus patients. here in the u.s., a student in texas and another student in tennessee had developed mild systems. they're being tested for the virus. a traveler who landed at l.a.x. wednesday night was hospitalized as a precaution. as we told you earlier, a man from washington state became the first confirmed case in the u.s. >> thank you. a major new development in a crime that rocked chinatown. there's been another arrest. >> vic lee tweeted the development last night. he said a second suspect is in police custody. three men beat and robbed a man last july in the middle of the afternoon of stockton and pacific streets. a friend of victim walter wong was also attacked. the brazen crime stunned chinatown residents. in october, a 19-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the beating.

one other suspect is still at large. the chp arrested a man suspected in a year-long series of highway attacks in prunedale north of sal charles lafferty was taken into custody. there's been 69 incidents of vehicles being hit by projectiles in the salinas valley. highway patrol investigators say lafferty fired glass marbles at cars using a slingshot. >> a very difficult case. when there's a break, from here to my commissioner's office in sacramento, our elected officials, we're able to tell them, it was a sigh of relief. >> highway patrol thinks lafferty acted by himself. investigators found him after spotting his gmc truck at the scene of the most recent attack earlier this month. democrats will wrap up their opens statements today in the senate impeachment trial. they spent 9 1/2 hours yesterday
