area. >> this is a one in a million type of cases. this netted over 2,000 laptops, $150,000 in cash. over $2.5 million in property collectively. >> look at all this. this was a major bust. not just stolen items but cars, even a house that was seized. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> the name of the operation, shattered glass, because much of the items stolen were smash and grabs in san francisco and san mateo. cash, cars, cameras and computers. the amount of goods was staggering. this is jaufts fraction of the items stolen and seized in this operation. the story behind the bust. >> reporter: if your car hasn't been broken into, chances are you know somebody whose car has. now san mateo county decided not to go after the people responsible for the robberies themselves but the people who stood to gain from the

merchandise stolen. in a sheriff's office property room, deputies processed box after box after box of stolen lap tops. dozen of stolen cell phones and high end tv cameras and lenses worth tens of thousands of dollars each. this is just part of the haul from a six-month long investigation spanning two counties. we named it the shattered glass case because of most of these come from window smashes. >> reporter: as we are all too aware, the bay area suffers from an epidemic of vehicle break-ins and thefts. the detectives developed information on where much of the merchandise was going. it was being fence in the san francisco. then brought back to the county for storage before being resold. possibly overseas. the ring wasn't responsible for the thefts, but they were responsibility for what happened next. >> they were getting the computers that were stolen and they were selling it themselves so we wanted to go up a level. >> yesterday cops launched raids

on five san mateo operations and three in san francisco. eight were arrest forward stolen property, conspiracy and money laundering. detectives say proceeds from the crimes have been used to buy this tesla, a a maserati, a dmv suv and even a $1.2 million daly city home, paid off in just two years. >> if we could have gotten 200 or 300, it would have been success. but this case netted over 2,000 laptops. $150,000 in cash. over $2.5 million the stolen property collectively. >> reporter: now, as the captain said, most of that came from smash and grab type robberies. but not all of it. some of it came from residential burglaries and even thefts from retail stores. the cell phones especially just walk in. take them and walk out. so the next big job is finding out who actually belongs to the stolen property trying to

reunite them and that's a big job ahead. one among many. >> just seeing all the cameras and the computers. it is just staggering. but the investigation isn't over. what happens next? aside from trying to reunite owners with their property. >> well, first job is tallying up all that stuff. we were in the property room watching them boxing up and trying count how many laptops, how many cell phones, how many other pieces of merchandise had been stolen, and they also want to know, who was on the next level above the fences? where was that merchandise going? so that's going to be the focus now of the next part of investigation. >> thank you. new developments on the deadly coronavirus. it is spreading globally beyond china and right here to the u.s. a second case has been confirmed in chicago. there are now more than 1,000 reported cases of the potentially fatal illness. most of them are in the

epicenter of the outbreak in and around wuhan china. the death toll has surgeried to 41 now. all of them in chicago. the patient in chicago a woman in her 60s. she returned from wuhan on january 13th. also today, health officials in france confirmtd three cases of the coronavirus. it is the first time illness has reached continental europe. it has been reported in taiwan, japan, singapore, vietnam, and taiwan. >> the outbreak has led to the cloerk you are of shanghai, disneyland. thousands were prepared to celebrate the lunar new year. they're closing it as a preventive measure against the spread of the virus. several other attractions are closed as well. parts of the great wall in beijing. even mcdonald's is closing several restaurants. >> and luis pena is in san francisco where they spoke about

this virus. >> reporter: that's right. the department of republican health did confirm that there is zero cases of the coronavirus in this city as of yet. the symptoms are very close to the ones of the flu. >> this pharmacist says many are highly concerned. >> people are selling out for masks. we can't even order anymore and just the regular mask, we've sold over 500. >> reporter: the national center for control and prevention began screening on january 18th. according to many with plans to travel home the celebrate tomorrow's chinese new year have now decided to cancel. a question he's been hearing over and over is, how to prevent getting infected. >> how many people have been coming asking questions? >> about 30 to 40 a day are

asking. >> reporter: today san francisco department of public health announced they're prepared and ready to respond to this new type of virus. >> what we don't know full he said deepidemiology. we don't know the full sfwenlt the spread. there does seem to be some person to person transmission. >> reporter: according to dr. phil, bay area residents are at risk of becoming sick. stay home if you're sick. >> so if they have traveled in the past 14 days and developed fever or respiratory symptoms including cough or shortness of breath, what we're advising is call the provider ahead of time. >> and they're working to be able to respond to any cases. abc7 news. >> thank you. in alameda county, several patients are being tested for

the coronavirus. the results are he said thatting. officials are looking at anyone who traveled to wuhan, china, that is showing symptoms. the number of people being evaluated is less than ten. we checked with several other bay area counties. so far no reports of the virus. the trump administration is threatening to cut off health care funding to california because the state requires that insurance plans cover abortions. the u.s. health and human services department issued the state a notice of violation. it gives california 30 days to come bligh an amendment that restricts states that practice discrimination against a health care organization. the president addressed marchers at the anti-abortion march pro pro-life today. the state attorney general says he will fight this by any means necessary. we're going to turn our attention to the weather with the weekend. rain ahead for the weekend. >> a little bit. a live look from our east bay hills. you can see it looks a little

overcast. spencer christian with a first look at the forecast. >> it's getting cloudier and cloudier. there is even some moisture showing up. live doppler 7 over the north bay, this is a weak and weakening storm. we have no reports of rain hitting the ground but clearly there is some moisture hitting the atmosphere. it rank as 1 on the storm impact scale. coming in late tomorrow, into sunday. producing light to moderate rainfall. we will see the remnants winding down just before midnight. then tomorrow day starts with cloyd cloudy skies. the dry conditions until late in the afternoon. it will start spreading southward and eastward with a stronger wave tomorrow night into sunday.

it appears the wine spill has not affected the wildlife. there was a leak at the rodney strong vineyard on wednesday. the winemaker says frogs, trout and birds appear to all be doing just fine. the tank holds about 97,000 gallons and rodney strong says it estimates about half of what spilled was kept out of a nearby creek and the russian river. a ban on cars. no more personal vehicles on one of san francisco's major streets. we'll tell you what it means for you even if you don't live in the city. 49ers with a little more than a week to go. and happy new year,

there it is. the niners' red and gold in miami painted with the logos of the 49ers and the kansas city chiefs. the nfl's 100th seasonal logo was installed on the 50 yard line. a pair of super bowl logos were painted on other yard lines. >> 49ers fans are lining up by the hundreds for their chance to meet and send off members of the team including the hero of the nfc championship game. >> chris nguyen there. an autograph session has a lot of the faithful out there behind you. >> that's right. we're here where hundreds of fans are lined up waiting to meet their favorite players. take a look at this behind us.

livermore. the clouds are getting lower and thicker. we'll see areas of fog returning. the late storm arrives early sunday and it will be mainly dry and mild next week. before we get to the weather wave heights tcontinue to grow s there's the risk of sneaker waves. tomorrow night, the clouds thick general the fog develops. low temperatures will range from upper 40s to the low 50s. it will be prettied my overnight. look for highs in the low to mid 60s. especially in the south bay, in the east bay around the peninsula. low to mid 60s in all locations. a little cooler where the clouds will thicken early and the rain will push in. so the approaching storm ranks one on the storm impact scale. a storm of light intensity. it will produce light to moderate rainfall.

maybe about .3 of an inch in most locations but there will be greater amounts in the hills. it starts late tomorrow afternoon and continues into sunday. let's talk about the weak wave. it won't produce much rain at all. mainly cloudy skies just that everywhere and most of the activity will be offshore. we'll see the light rain pushing into the north bay. it will remain only in the north bay until 6:00, 7:00 in the evening. and then a stronger wave associated with the cold front that sweeps through in the overnight hours into sunday. and then we'll see the skies go clearing a little bit. the rainfall totals will be under .3 of an inch but wetter in the north bay. the storm that's coming in ranks only a 1 on the impact scale. we'll see at least partial

time coming. still a lot of people may be very surprised next week when all of this closes to private cars. likely forever. >> wednesday morning there is going to be signs everywhere. all along here. >> reporter: the signs will indicate that no private cars, ubers and lyfts included, will be allowed on this two-mile stretch of market street. >> this transformation is going to make it easier for people who walk up and down market street or people who ride bicycles or people who use public transportation. >> what about people who ride and drive cars? >> that has been the problem. >> reporter: the project is called battered market street. many don't think it is deserved. >> do you feel like you need the car in the city? >> of course i do. how can i leave my stuff here without my car? >> reporter: she lives in san francisco and has been selling her hand made jewelry and hats for 12 years on market street.

she doesn't understand the need for more pedestrian space. >> i was thinking the other day, why we need this much space for people to walk since we have two big sidewalks, and i'm really worried about how i can come down and park my car and unload and load. >> reporter: what is the real impetus for the closure? >> i think right now, market street's design is out of whack with how it is being used and how we want it to be used. >> reporter: he is a supervisor. most of this is in his district. market street is home to half the top ten intersections forrer pedestrians and bicycle collisions. >> safety is a huge factor but also the potential of having a thorough fare like so many cities around the world where you can walk, take transit, bike, we hope this reinvigorates the street. >> reporter: drivers, don't

public transportation for some just doesn't work. >> i do. we know that up to 400 people drive on market street during peak commute hours. and so removing all those cars -- >> you said 400. it feels like 4,000. >> market street is crowded. one of the things we talk about, whether they're biking, walking on the bus or driving. no one is really happy with how things are right now. i think we only have room for improvement. >> are you worried at all about unintended consequences? this will certainly shift the vehicles to other streets, and then they're going to be all jammed up. >> not necessarily. it was the same thing on 14th street and manhattan. and all the issues with the surrounding streets didn't come to pass. so i think people will either choose another mode or shift to streets where it makes sense to drive on. >> so what are you relevanting

if i want to get to and from the embarcadero to city hall, are we talking about broadway? >> the first thing is i would say that's a great bike trip to take. but if you are driving, you know, there are parallel streets, fulsom howard will be open to automobile traffic and bushpine. their so you think this will work. a little hiccup here and there and some people don't get word. >> part of what we need to do is spread the word. we're happy to get the word out. the city has a role to play in enforcement to make sure they have the resources on the street to guide people in the correct direction. and we'll be watching. our members will be biking every day and we'll be hearing feedback. >> as her report mentioned. the idea, and the long term goal

the judges are licensed for each breed. and then they judge the breed, each dog, to the standards. some dogs talk about the way the teeth meet. they talk about shoulder placement, they talk about ear set. so these judges have to go through the process of examining the dogs, and then picking the best dog. there is one dog that represents each breed in the day. and each of those dogs compete in the group. and there are seven different groups so sporting, hounds, working, terriers, toys, nonsporting and herding breeds. all of them have a function. what they're used for or bred for. and there is one winner from all of those seven different groups that goes on and competes for best in show. >> that's awesome. >> are they in the show. >> in yes. >> so they'll be competing against each other by the end if they make it that far. >> yes, they will. both of these are hounds.

rice. the northern part of vietnam, they make it into a square shape. in the southern part they make it like a log. the traditional sticky rice you have to cook in banana leaf for a couple hours. my take on it is quick and easiful cook it in the rice cooker, sticky rice and sought eight with some mushrooms, chinese sausage and a little soy sauce. put an egg on top. everything tastes good with eggs. melon is available so we make it into a salad with carrots, unyunls, we eat the pickles to clean our palate between the plates. and then this is gold coin or money. everything symbolizes something. to us and the chinese culture,

you eat noodles because they're really long. you don't break they will. it symbolizes a long life. we eat whole fish. we don't take the head or the tail off. it sblimizes wholesomeness. this is the pork cooked in soy sauce and poached egg. we cook for new year. a big pot to last three or four days. we don't cook on the second and third day. we just eat leftovers. >> londonar new year to me and my family, it is a very important holiday. just as important as christmas and thanksgiving. we celebrate it every year and we have lion dancers come. they dance through restaurant. guests will feed them with red ne envelopes for good luck.
