a united front. bay area health care workers in full preparation mode for the coronavirus. weekend storm is coming our way. i'll show you how wet it's going to be in my forecast. why the city of san rafael is saying not to give your loose change to the homeless. abc7 news starts right now. now, news to build a better bay area, from abc7. >> the deadly coronavirus outbreak is growing tonight. 41 people have died in china and more than 1,200 others have been infected. 35 million people are on lockdown in more than a dozen cities across china. the world health organization says they are preparing for an outbreak that could last months. officials in australia announced the first case on that

continent. cases have also been identified in other asian countries and in france and the united states. >> it is spreading. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. new developments in the fight against the spread of the new coronavirus as bay area health workers are preparing in unison. >> abc7 news reporter chris reyes has started in santa clara county where they believe they are doing the very best they can. >> reporter: absolutely. good evening, dan. good evening, ama. santa clara county has dealt about h1n1 and sars so they feel confident they can handle this. >> some of the things that we do are identify cases early and get ourselves prepared to identify cases early. >> reporter: santa clara county is working with health departments all over the bay area and california and with the cdc to learn everything they can about the virus, then passing that information quickly to

local healthcare providers. san francisco's department of health holding their own press conference to send a message of vigilance to the public. >> if they have traveled in the past 14 days and develop fever or respiratory symptoms including cough or shortness of breath, what we are advising they do is call their provider ahead of time. >> reporter: fairgrounds preparations are still in full force for lunar new year celebrations. about 10,000 people are expected to attend at the tech festival. one vendor has canceled because of concerns over the virus, and organizers say they are preparing their guests. >> if you come here, make sure you wash your hand every minute and cover your mouth when you cough. >> reporter: this doctor says there is no reason to cancel public gatherings because there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in california. the risk of infection in the bay area is low. still, this warning. >> anyone who is feeling ill or has any symptoms of illness, i

would really discourage them from going to any public gatherings of any kind. >> reporter: so we've also been told that public health officials all over the bay area have agreed not to report on the number of patients that they're investigating for the coronavirus. they don't want to cause any unwarranted panic or confusion. but they don't plan to report anything until a confirmed case is in the bay area. >> we have a lot more information about coronavirus on our website including what it is, the symptoms, and how it spreads. just go to abc7news.com. new at 11:00, peach stark who represented several east bay districts for four decades in congress has died. house speaker nancy pelosi issued a statement tonight saying, in part, today america has lost a champion of the people and a leader of great integrity, moral courage, and compassion. congressman pete stark was a master legislator who used his gavel to give a voice to the voiceless, and he will be deeply

missed, end of nancy pelosi's statement. stark spent much of his time in congress focused on health care. he was a key architect of the affordable care act. he was 88 years of age. he is survived by his wife, seven children, and several grandchildren. we're on storm watch tonight with rain on the way for this weekend. people living in the north bay across the golden gate bridge that you're seeing there are already seeing scattered showers. spencer christian is tracking the storm. >> those light sprinkles in the north bay earlier are winding down now. but there is more on the way. the approaching storm ranks one, a storm of light intensity. it will start tomorrow afternoon, continue overnight into sunday morning producing a light rain and showers. notice it'll be mainly dry at that time but quite cloudy and then later in the day we will see some light rain push into the north bay and sweep on through.

but then later on tomorrow night, heavier, steadier rain moves into the north bay and swoops southward to eastward into all regions of the bay. i will show you what will follow that storm in a few minutes. >> you can track this weekend's rain on the go with your phone. just download our free abc7 news app. helping those in need is a key part of building a better bay area. that's why new signs going up in san rafael have raised eyebrows. they appear to discourage panhandling. city officials say there is a better way to help those living out on the street. >> reporter: dan, you know the city feels that getting involved or donating to a local charity is more productive. so they posted these signs up for drivers to see. >> so the sign itself is just explicitly saying please give inside, don't give money to

pele on the street. and there is a hotline number we have created so if they are looking for help, they can get help. but also for the public they can find out how to get involved. >> reporter: the city installed purple meters downtown where change from there goes to an organization that gives noncash stipends to those that are homeless. these signs are another way to direct money towards charity. some think it goes too far. >> it's a constitutional right to travel. >> reporter: mike and his two dogs travel around marin county. they say these signs are just trying to push people that need help the most out. >> people got to stop judging on people. people go through hard times. >> reporter: drivers will mainly see these signs off second and third streets off the intersections of irwin and grant. one woman says the number that directs you to charities and nonprofits is nice, but she will decide if she gives money or not. >> that's a good reminder, and i

do give money to nonprofits, but other times i just feel like i'm going to make that decision for myself. >> reporter: now the city says over the last two years they have seen a 30% reduction in unsheltered homelessness. reporting live in san rafael, lauren martinez, abc7 news. part of building a better bay area includes finding solutions to the housing crisis. in berkeley, people got the first look at six new condos going on sale at affordable prices. a one-bedroom is priced at $162,000. applicants are eligible for that one bedroom if they have never owned a home and earn less than $79,000. applications are due by february 6th. we want to know what your thoughts are on these plans to build a better bay area. show them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. the san francisco skyline is lit up in red and gold before next weekend's big 49ers/chiefs

statements in the case against president trump. tomorrow the president's attorneys will begin their defense in the impeachment trial. it comes as a new abc news "washington post" poll finds two-thirds of americans say witnesses should be called. and the republicans remain divided. >> reporter: as house democrats wrap up their three-day opening remarks, the president's repeated denials that he doesn't know rudy giuliani's former associate lev parnas. receiving new scrutiny. abc news has reviewed a recording from april 2018 of what appears to be a conversation between parnas, the president, and others where he says they need to oust then u.s. ambassador to ukraine marie yovanovitch. he says she is basically walking around telling everybody, wait, he's going to get impeached. the president appears to say get rid of her, get her out tomorrow, i don't care, get her

>> reporter: president trump's team will begin their opening remarks tomorrow, but they're only going to be in session for about three hours. that shortened schedule comes after president trump tweeted out that saturdays are death valley in tv. that coming from the media-savvy president who wants as many eyes on his defense as possible. >> abc news will have special coverage of the impeachment trial tomorrow morning starting at 7:00 a.m. you can watch it right here on abc7. police raids on the peninsula have broken up a major stolen property fencing operation and landed eight people behind bars. yesterday police launched raids on five san mateo county locations and three in san francisco. police say the items recovered came from residential burglaries, retail theft, and smash-and-grab brechlrobberies. >> this case made it over 200 laptops, over $2.5 million of stolen property collectively. >> these are the eight suspects

arrested. detectives say proceeds from the crimes had been used to buy luxury cars and even a $1.2 million home. greece cathedral was turned into a stage tonight for the sixth annual san francisco movement arts festival. dancers took over the main floor, chapels, hallways, and stairways with over a dozen simultaneous performances of ballet, ballroom, and modern dance. just beautiful. >> yeah, definitely. okay. so the weather. some people are getting a little rain right now. >> and it's going to continue into the weekend. spencer christian is tracking it here for us. >> we had a few sprinkles up in the north bay. here's a live doppler 7. we have mostly dry conditions at the moment, but another storm and more rain will be coming our way. it's 55 degrees. mid-50s in fact in oakland. redwood city, san jose and half moon bay.

looking back at san francisco at the moment, it's 53 degrees in santa rosa and mid-50s also in petaluma. so we have pretty much a uniform temperature reading right now across the bay area. the fog is going to spread to other areas. overnigh these are our forecast features. late storm continues overnight into sunday morning. we'll have a mainly dry and mild week next week. we still have rough this beach hazard statement is in effect until 9:00 tomorrow morning. overnight lows will be on the mild side mileage upper 40s to low 50s. we'll see high temperatures there only in the low 60s and low to mid-60s just about everywhere else. now let's talk about the approaching storm. it's a storm of light intensity ranking only one on the abc7 storm impact scale. it'll start late tomorrow in the north bay sweeping southward and

eastward. it'll produce less than 0.2 of an inch of rain. during the overnight hours we won't see much in the way of precipitation. but late tomorrow first wave of light rain moves into the north bay in the early afternoon hours. it quickly moves out. but then it'll be followed by another wave of heavier, steadier rain in the latenight hours. and continue into about midday sunday. we will start to get some partial clearing by mid-afternoon on sunday. we project the rainfall totals will mostly be under 0.10 of an inch. and here is the accuweather seven-day forecast after a bit of wet weather . slight possibility of some light sprinkles in the north bay monday night and early tuesday
